Explicit Symplectic Integrators for Massive Point Vortex Dynamics in Binary Mixture of Bose--Einstein Condensates

We construct explicit integrators of arbitrary even orders of accuracy for massive point vortex dynamics in binary mixture of Bose--Einstein condensates proposed by Richaud et al. The integrators are symplectic and preserve the angular momentum of the system exactly. Our main focus is the small-mass regime in which the minor component of the binary mixture comprises a very small fraction of the total mass. The solution behaviors in this regime change significantly depending on the initial momenta: they are highly oscillatory unless the momenta satisfy certain conditions. The standard Runge--Kutta method performs very poorly in preserving the Hamiltonian showing a significant drift in the long run, especially for highly oscillatory solutions. On the other hand, our integrators nearly preserve the Hamiltonian without drifts. We also give an estimate of the error in the Hamiltonian by finding an asymptotic expansion of the modified Hamiltonian for our second-order integrator.

Small-Mass Asymptotics of Massive Point Vortex Dynamics in Bose--Einstein Condensates I: Averaging and Normal Forms

We perform an asymptotic analysis of massive point-vortex dynamics in Bose--Einstein condensates in the small-mass limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. We define two distinguished manifolds in the phase space of the dynamics. We call the first the kinematic subspace $\mathcal{K}$, whereas the second is an almost-invariant set $\mathcal{S}$ called a ``slow manifold.'' The orthogonal projection of the massive dynamics to $\mathcal{K}$ yields the standard massless vortex dynamics or the Kirchhoff equations -- also the 0th-order approximation to the massive equation as $\varepsilon \to 0$. Our first main result proves that the massive dynamics starting $O(\varepsilon)$-close to $\mathcal{K}$ remains $O(\varepsilon)$-close to the massless dynamics for short times. The second main result is the derivation of a normal form for the system's Hamiltonian for the two-vortex case; it describes the coupling between motion within $\mathcal{S}$ and that transverse to it. Specifically, we use the Lie transformation perturbation method to derive the first few terms in a formal expansion for $\mathcal{S}$ and demonstrate numerically that fast oscillations due to the vortices' mass are suppressed, given initial conditions sufficiently close to $\mathcal{S}$.

Relative Dynamics of Vortices in Confined Bose--Einstein Condensates

We consider the relative dynamics -- the dynamics modulo rotational symmetry in this particular context -- of $N$ vortices in confined Bose--Einstein Condensates (BEC) using a finite-dimensional vortex approximation to the two-dimensional Gross--Pitaevskii equation. We give a Hamiltonian formulation of the relative dynamics by showing that it is an instance of the Lie--Poisson equation on the dual of a certain Lie algebra. Just as in our accompanying work on vortex dynamics with the Euclidean symmetry, the relative dynamics possesses a Casimir invariant and evolves in an invariant set, yielding an Energy--Casimir-type stability condition. We consider three examples of relative equilibria -- those solutions that are undergoing rigid rotations about the origin -- with $N=2, 3, 4$, and investigate their stability using the stability condition.

Nonlinear Stability of Relative Equilibria in the Planar $N$-Vortex Problem with Non-Zero Total Circulation

We prove a sufficient condition for nonlinear stability of relative equilibria in the planar $N$-vortex problem with non-zero total circulation; the stability is in the sense of Lyapunov to perturbations that preserve the momentum map. Using the condition, we also prove nonlinear stability of some known relative equilibria beyond the ranges of parameters that were previously known to be stable. Our result builds on our previous work on the Hamiltonian formulation of its relative dynamics as a Lie--Poisson system. The relative dynamics recasts the relative equilibria of the $N$-vortex problem as fixed points in the Lie--Poisson relative dynamics. We analyze the stability of such fixed points by exploiting the Hamiltonian formulation as well as invariants and constraints that naturally arise in the relative dynamics. We apply the method to the rhombus equilibria with two vortices of circulation 1 and the other two of circulation $\gamma$, and prove that they are stable for $-2 + \sqrt{3} < \gamma < 0$, which were previously known to be only linearly stable due to Roberts.

Controlled Lagrangians and Stabilization of Euler--Poincar\'e Equations with Symmetry Breaking Nonholonomic Constraints

We extend the method of Controlled Lagrangians to nonholonomic Euler--Poincar\'e equations with advected parameters, specifically to those mechanical systems on Lie groups whose symmetry is broken not only by a potential force but also by nonholonomic constraints. We introduce advected-parameter-dependent quasivelocities in order to systematically eliminate the Lagrange multipliers in the nonholonomic Euler--Poincar\'e equations. The quasivelocities facilitate the method of Controlled Lagrangians for these systems, and lead to matching conditions that are similar to those by Bloch, Leonard, and Marsden for the standard holonomic Euler--Poincar\'e equation. Our motivating example is what we call the pendulum skate, a simple model of a figure skater developed by Gzenda and Putkaradze. We show that the upright spinning of the pendulum skate is stable under certain conditions, whereas the upright sliding equilibrium is always unstable. Using the matching condition, we derive a control law to stabilize the sliding equilibrium.

Preservation of Quadratic Invariants by Semiexplicit Symplectic Integrators for Non-separable Hamiltonian Systems

We prove that the recently developed semiexplicit symplectic integrators for non-separable Hamiltonian systems preserve any linear and quadratic invariants possessed by the Hamiltonian systems. This is in addition to being symmetric and symplectic as shown in our previous work; hence it shares the crucial structure-preserving properties with some of the well-known symplectic Runge--Kutta methods such as the Gauss--Legendre methods. The proof follows two steps: First we show how the extended Hamiltonian system proposed by Pihajoki inherits linear and quadratic invariants in the extended phase space from the original Hamiltonian system. Then we show that this inheritance in turn implies that our integrator preserves the original linear and quadratic invariants in the original phase space. We also analyze preservation/non-preservation of these invariants by Tao's extended Hamiltonian system and the extended phase space integrators of Pihajoki and Tao. The paper concludes with numerical demonstrations of our results using a simple test case and a system of point vortices.

Optimal Control with Broken Symmetry of Multi-Agent Systems on Lie Groups

In this paper we study reduction by symmetry for optimality conditions in optimal control problems of left-invariant affine multi-agent control systems, with partial symmetry breaking cost functions. Our approach emphasizes the role of variational principles. Specifically, we recast the optimal control problem as a constrained variational problem with a partial symmetry breaking Hamiltonian and obtain the reduced optimality conditions from a reduced variational principle via Pontryagin Maximum Principle. We apply the results to a collision avoidance problem for multiple unicycles in the presence of an obstacle.

Shape Dynamics of $N$ Point Vortices on the Sphere

We give a geometric account of the relative motion or the shape dynamics of $N$ point vortices on the sphere exploiting the $\mathsf{SO}(3)$-symmetry of the system. The main idea is to bypass the technical difficulty of the $\mathsf{SO}(3)$-reduction by first lifting the dynamics from $\mathbb{S}^{2}$ to $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. We then perform the $\mathsf{U}(2)$-reduction using a dual pair to obtain a Lie--Poisson dynamics for the shape dynamics. This Lie--Poisson structure helps us find a family of Casimirs for the shape dynamics. We further reduce the system by $\mathbb{T}^{N-1}$-symmetry to obtain a Poisson structure for the shape dynamics involving fewer shape variables than those of the previous work by Borisov and Pavlov. As an application of the shape dynamics, we prove that the tetrahedron relative equilibria are stable when all of their circulations have the same sign, generalizing some existing results on tetrahedron relative equilibria of identical vortices.

Semiexplicit Symplectic Integrators for Non-separable Hamiltonian Systems

We construct a symplectic integrator for non-separable Hamiltonian systems combining an extended phase space approach of Pihajoki and the symmetric projection method. The resulting method is semiexplicit in the sense that the main time evolution step is explicit whereas the symmetric projection step is implicit. The symmetric projection binds potentially diverging copies of solutions, thereby remedying the main drawback of the extended phase space approach. Moreover, our semiexplicit method is symplectic in the original phase space. This is in contrast to existing extended phase space integrators, which are symplectic only in the extended phase space. We demonstrate that our method exhibits an excellent long-time preservation of invariants, and also that it tends to be as fast as and can be faster than Tao's explicit modified extended phase space integrator particularly for small enough time steps and with higher-order implementations and for higher-dimensional problems.

Clebsch Canonization of Lie-Poisson Systems

We propose a systematic procedure called the Clebsch canonization for obtaining a canonical Hamiltonian system that is related to a given Lie-Poisson equation via a momentum map. We describe both coordinate and geometric versions of the procedure, the latter apparently for the first time. We also find another momentum map so that the pair of momentum maps constitute a dual pair under a certain condition. The dual pair gives a concrete realization of what is commonly referred to as collectivization of Lie-Poisson systems. It also implies that solving the canonized system by symplectic Runge-Kutta methods yields so-called collective Lie-Poisson integrators that preserve the coadjoint orbits and hence the Casimirs exactly. We give a couple of examples, including the Kida vortex and the heavy top on a movable base with controls, which are Lie-Poisson systems on $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)^{*}$ and $(\mathfrak{se}(3) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3})^{*}$, respectively.

Controlled Lagrangians and Stabilization of Euler--Poincar\'e Mechanical Systems with Broken Symmetry II: Potential Shaping

We apply the method of controlled Lagrangians by potential shaping to Euler--Poincar\'e mechanical systems with broken symmetry. We assume that the configuration space is a general semidirect product Lie group $\mathsf{G} \ltimes V$ with a particular interest in those systems whose configuration space is the special Euclidean group $\mathsf{SE}(3) = \mathsf{SO}(3) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3}$. The key idea behind the work is the use of representations of $\mathsf{G} \ltimes V$ and their associated advected parameters. Specifically, we derive matching conditions for the modified potential exploiting the representations and advected parameters. Our motivating examples are a heavy top spinning on a movable base and an underwater vehicle with non-coincident centers of gravity and buoyancy. We consider a few different control problems for these systems, and show that our results give a general framework that reproduces our previous work on the former example and also those of Leonard on the latter. Also, in one of the latter cases, we demonstrate the advantage of our representation-based approach by giving a simpler and more succinct formulation of the problem.

Approximation of Semiclassical Expectation Values by Symplectic Gaussian Wave Packet Dynamics

This paper concerns an approximation of the expectation values of the position and momentum of the solution to the semiclassical Schr\"odinger equation with a Gaussian as the initial condition. Of particular interest is the approximation obtained by our symplectic/Hamiltonian formulation of the Gaussian wave packet dynamics that introduces a correction term to the conventional formulation using the classical Hamiltonian system by Hagedorn and others. The main result is a proof that our formulation gives a higher-order approximation than the classical formulation does to the expectation value dynamics under certain conditions on the potential function. Specifically, as the semiclassical parameter $\varepsilon$ approaches $0$, our dynamics gives an $O(\varepsilon^{3/2})$ approximation of the expectation value dynamics whereas the classical one gives an $O(\varepsilon)$ approximation.

Controlled Lagrangians and Stabilization of Euler--Poincar\'e Mechanical Systems with Broken Symmetry I: Kinetic Shaping

We extend the method of controlled Lagrangians with kinetic shaping to those mechanical systems on semidirect product Lie groups with broken symmetry, more specifically to the Euler--Poincar\'e equations with advected parameters. We find a matching condition for the controlled Lagrangian for such systems whose configuration manifold is a general semidirect product Lie group $\mathsf{G} \ltimes V$. Our motivating examples are a bottom-heavy underwater vehicle and a top spinning on a movable base. Their configuration space is the special Euclidean group $\mathsf{SE}(3) = \mathsf{SO}(3) \ltimes \mathbb{R}^{3}$, where the $\mathsf{SE}(3)$-symmetry is broken by the gravity. The controls resulting from the matching condition stabilize unstable equilibria of these examples. Furthermore, the matching helps us find additional dissipative controls that asymptotically stabilize those unstable equilibria.

Variational Optimization on Lie Groups, with Examples of Leading (Generalized) Eigenvalue Problems

The article considers smooth optimization of functions on Lie groups. By generalizing NAG variational principle in vector space (Wibisono et al., 2016) to Lie groups, continuous Lie-NAG dynamics which are guaranteed to converge to local optimum are obtained. They correspond to momentum versions of gradient flow on Lie groups. A particular case of $\mathsf{SO}(n)$ is then studied in details, with objective functions corresponding to leading Generalized EigenValue problems: the Lie-NAG dynamics are first made explicit in coordinates, and then discretized in structure preserving fashions, resulting in optimization algorithms with faithful energy behavior (due to conformal symplecticity) and exactly remaining on the Lie group. Stochastic gradient versions are also investigated. Numerical experiments on both synthetic data and practical problem (LDA for MNIST) demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods as optimization algorithms ($not$ as a classification method).

Hamiltonian Dynamics of Semiclassical Gaussian Wave Packets in Electromagnetic Potentials

We extend our previous work on symplectic semiclassical Gaussian wave packet dynamics to incorporate electromagnetic interactions by including a vector potential. The main advantage of our formulation is that the equations of motion derived are naturally Hamiltonian. We obtain an asymptotic expansion of our equations in terms of $\hbar$ and show that our equations have $\mathcal{O}(\hbar)$ corrections to those presented by Zhou, whereas ours also recover the equations of Zhou in the case of a linear vector potential and quadratic scalar potential. One and two dimensional examples of a particle in a magnetic field are given and numerical solutions are presented and compared with the classical solutions and the expectation values of the corresponding observables as calculated by the Egorov or Initial Value Representation (IVR) method. We numerically demonstrate that the $\mathcal{O}(\hbar)$ correction terms improve the accuracy of the classical or Zhou's equations for short times in the sense that our solutions converge to the expectation values calculated using the Egorov/IVR method faster than the classical solutions or those of Zhou as $\hbar \to 0$.

Collective Heavy Top Dynamics

We construct a Poisson map $\mathbf{M}\colon T^{*}\mathbb{C}^{2} \to \mathfrak{se}(3)^{*}$ with respect to the canonical Poisson bracket on $T^{*}\mathbb{C}^{2} \cong T^{*}\mathbb{R}^{4}$ and the $(-)$-Lie--Poisson bracket on the dual $\mathfrak{se}(3)^{*}$ of the Lie algebra of the special Euclidean group $\mathsf{SE}(3)$. The essential part of this map is the momentum map associated with the cotangent lift of the natural right action of the semidirect product Lie group $\mathsf{SU}(2) \ltimes \mathbb{C}^{2}$ on $\mathbb{C}^{2}$. This Poisson map gives rise to a canonical Hamiltonian system on $T^{*}\mathbb{C}^{2}$ whose solutions are mapped by $\mathbf{M}$ to solutions of the heavy top equations. We show that the Casimirs of the heavy top dynamics and the additional conserved quantity of the Lagrange top correspond to the Noether conserved quantities associated with certain symmetries of the canonical Hamiltonian system. We also construct a Lie--Poisson integrator for the heavy top dynamics by combining the Poisson map $\mathbf{M}$ with a simple symplectic integrator, and demonstrate that the integrator exhibits either exact or near conservation of the conserved quantities of the Kovalevskaya top.

The Symmetric Representation of the Generalized Rigid Body Equations and Symplectic Reduction

We show that a symplectic reduction of the symmetric representation of the generalized $n$-dimensional rigid body equations yields the $n$-dimensional Euler equation. This result provides an alternative to the more elaborate relationship between these equations established by Bloch, Crouch, Marsden, and Ratiu. Specifically, we exploit the inherent $\mathsf{Sp}(2n,\mathbb{R})$-symmetry in the symmetric representation to present its relationship with the Euler equation via symplectic reduction facilitated by the dual pair recently developed by Skerritt and Vizman.

Dual Pairs and Regularization of Kummer Shapes in Resonances

We present an account of dual pairs and the Kummer shapes for $n:m$ resonances that provides an alternative to Holm and Vizman's work. The advantages of our point of view are that the associated Poisson structure on $\mathfrak{su}(2)^{*}$ is the standard $(+)$-Lie--Poisson bracket independent of the values of $(n,m)$ as well as that the Kummer shape is regularized to become a sphere without any pinches regardless of the values of $(n,m)$. A similar result holds for $n:-m$ resonance with a paraboloid and $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)^{*}$. The result also has a straightforward generalization to multidimensional resonances as well.
