Prescription for choosing an interpolating function

Interpolating functional method is a powerful tool for studying the behavior of a quantity in the intermediate region of the parameter space of interest by using its perturbative expansions at both ends. Recently several interpolating functional methods have been proposed, in addition to the well-known Pade approximant, namely the "Fractional Power of Polynomial" (FPP) and the "Fractional Power of Rational functions" (FPR) methods. Since combinations of these methods also give interpolating functions, we may end up with multitudes of the possible approaches. So a criterion for choosing an appropriate interpolating function is very much needed. In this paper, we propose reference quantities which can be used for choosing a good interpolating function. In order to validate the prescription based on these quantities, we study the degree of correlation between "the reference quantities" and the "actual degree of deviation between the interpolating function and the true function" in examples where the true functions are known.

Unitarity, Crossing Symmetry and Duality of the S-matrix in large N Chern-Simons theories with fundamental matter

We present explicit computations and conjectures for $2 \to 2$ scattering matrices in large $N$ {\it $U(N)$} Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental bosonic or fermionic matter to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling expansion. The bosonic and fermionic S-matrices map to each other under the recently conjectured Bose-Fermi duality after a level-rank transposition. The S-matrices presented in this paper may be regarded as relativistic generalization of Aharonov-Bohm scattering. They have unusual structural features: they include a non analytic piece localized on forward scattering, and obey modified crossing symmetry rules. We conjecture that these unusual features are properties of S-matrices in all Chern-Simons matter theories. The S-matrix in one of the exchange channels in our paper has an anyonic character; the parameter map of the conjectured Bose-Fermi duality may be derived by equating the anyonic phase in the bosonic and fermionic theories.

Duality and Higher Temperature Phases of Large $N$ Chern-Simons Matter Theories on $S^2 \times S^1$

It has been recently demonstrated that the thermal partition function of any large $N$ Chern-Simons gauge theories on $S^2$, coupled to fundamental matter, reduces to a capped unitary matrix model. The matrix models corresponding to several specific matter Chern-Simons theories at temperature $T$ were determined in arXiv:1301.6169. The large $N$ saddle point equations for these theories were determined in the same paper, and were solved in the low temperature phase. In this paper we find exact solutions for these saddle point equations in three other phases of these theories and thereby explicitly determine the free energy of the corresponding theories at all values of $T^2/N$. As anticipated on general grounds in arXiv:1301.6169, our results are in perfect agreement with conjectured level rank type bosonization dualities between pairs of such theories.

Phases of large $N$ vector Chern-Simons theories on $S^2 \times S^1$

We study the thermal partition function of level $k$ U(N) Chern-Simons theories on $S^2$ interacting with matter in the fundamental representation. We work in the 't Hooft limit, $N,k\to\infty$, with $\lambda = N/k$ and $\frac{T^2 V_{2}}{N}$ held fixed where $T$ is the temperature and $V_{2}$ the volume of the sphere. An effective action proposed in arXiv:1211.4843 relates the partition function to the expectation value of a `potential' function of the $S^1$ holonomy in pure Chern-Simons theory; in several examples we compute the holonomy potential as a function of $\lambda$. We use level rank duality of pure Chern-Simons theory to demonstrate the equality of thermal partition functions of previously conjectured dual pairs of theories as a function of the temperature. We reduce the partition function to a matrix integral over holonomies. The summation over flux sectors quantizes the eigenvalues of this matrix in units of ${2\pi \over k}$ and the eigenvalue density of the holonomy matrix is bounded from above by $\frac{1}{2 \pi \lambda}$. The corresponding matrix integrals generically undergo two phase transitions as a function of temperature. For several Chern-Simons matter theories we are able to exactly solve the relevant matrix models in the low temperature phase, and determine the phase transition temperature as a function of $\lambda$. At low temperatures our partition function smoothly matches onto the $N$ and $\lambda$ independent free energy of a gas of non renormalized multi trace operators. We also find an exact solution to a simple toy matrix model; the large $N$ Gross-Witten-Wadia matrix integral subject to an upper bound on eigenvalue density.

An anisotropic hybrid non-perturbative formulation for 4D N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories

We provide a simple non-perturbative formulation for non-commutative four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. The formulation is constructed by a combination of deconstruction (orbifold projection), momentum cut-off and matrix model techniques. We also propose a moduli fixing term that preserves lattice supersymmetry on the deconstruction formulation. Although the analogous formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is proposed also in Nucl.Phys.B857(2012), our action is simpler and better suited for computer simulations. Moreover, not only for the non-commutative theories, our formulation has a potential to be a non-perturbative tool also for the commutative four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories.

Branes from a non-Abelian (2,0) tensor multiplet with 3-algebra

In this paper, we study the equations of motion for non-Abelian N=(2,0) tensor multiplets in six dimensions, which were recently proposed by Lambert and Papageorgakis. Some equations are regarded as constraint equations. We employ a loop extension of the Lorentzian three-algebra (3-algebra) and examine the equations of motion around various solutions of the constraint equations. The resultant equations take forms that allow Lagrangian descriptions. We find various (5+d)-dimensional Lagrangians and investigate the relation between them from the viewpoint of M-theory duality.

More on the Nambu-Poisson M5-brane Theory: Scaling limit, background independence and an all order solution to the Seiberg-Witten map

We continue our investigation on the Nambu-Poisson description of M5-brane in a large constant C-field background (NP M5-brane theory) constructed in Refs.[1, 2]. In this paper, the low energy limit where the NP M5-brane theory is applicable is clarified. The background independence of the NP M5-brane theory is made manifest using the variables in the BLG model of multiple M2-branes. An all order solution to the Seiberg-Witten map is also constructed.

A No-Go Theorem for M5-brane Theory

The BLG model for multiple M2-branes motivates an M5-brane theory with a novel gauge symmetry defined by the Nambu-Poisson structure. This Nambu-Poisson gauge symmetry for an M5-brane in large C-field background can be matched, on double dimension reduction, with the Poisson limit of the noncommutative gauge symmetry for a D4-brane in B-field background. Naively, one expects that there should exist a certain deformation of the Nambu-Poisson structure to match with the full noncommutative gauge symmetry including higher order terms. However, We prove the no-go theorem that there is no way to deform the Nambu-Poisson gauge symmetry, even without assuming the existence of a deformation of Nambu-Poisson bracket, to match with the noncommutative gauge symmetry in 4+1 dimensions to all order, regardless of how the double dimension reduction is implemented.

String solitons in the M5-brane worldvolume with a Nambu-Poisson structure and Seiberg-Witten map

We analyze BPS equations for string-like configurations derived from the M5-brane worldvolume action with a Nambu-Poisson structure constructed in arXiv:0804.3629, arXiv:0805.2898. We solve the BPS equations up to the first order in the parameter $g$ which characterizes the strength of the Nambu-Poisson bracket. We compare our solutions to previously constructed BPS string solitons in the conventional description of M5-brane in a constant three-form background via Seiberg-Witten map, and find agreement.

M-Theory Superalgebra From Multiple Membranes

We investigate space-time supersymmetry of the model of multiple M2-branes proposed by Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson. When there is a central element in Lie 3-algebra, the model possesses an extra symmetry shifting the fermions in the central element. Together with the original worldvolume supersymmetry transformation, we construct major part of the eleven dimensional space-time super-Poincaré algebra with central extensions. Implications to transverse five-branes in the matrix model for M-theory are also discussed.

High-energy String Scatterings of Compactified Open String

We calculate high-energy massive string scattering amplitudes of compactified open string. We derive infinite linear relations, or stringy symmetries, among soft high-energy string scattering amplitudes of different string states in the Gross kinematic regime (GR). In addition, we systematically analyze all hard power-law and soft exponential fall-off regimes of high-energy compactified open string scatterings by comparing the scatterings with their 26D noncompactified counterparts. In particular, we discover the existence of a power-law regime at fixed angle and an exponential fall-off regime at small angle for high-energy compactified open string scatterings. The linear relations break down as expected in all power-law regimes. The analysis can be extended to the high-energy scatterings of the compactified closed string, which corrects and extends the previous results in [28] .

A Lattice Formulation of Two Dimensional Topological Field Theory

We propose a non-perturbative criterion to investigate whether supersymmetric lattice gauge theories preserving partial SUSY can have the desired continuum limit or not. Since the target continuum theories of the lattice models are extended supersymmetric gauge theories including the topological field theory (TFT) as a special subsector, the continuum limits of them should reproduce the properties of the TFT. Therefore, whether the property of the TFT can be recovered at the continuum limit becomes a non-perturbative criterion. Then we accept it as a criterion. In this paper, among the topological properties, we investigate the BRST cohomology on the two dimensional ${\mathcal N}=(4,4)$ CKKU lattice model without moduli fixing mass term. We show that the BRST cohomology in the target continuum theory cannot be realized from the BRST cohomology on the lattice. From this result, we obtain the possible implication that the ${\mathcal N} = (4,4)$ CKKU model cannot recover the target continuum theory if the non-perturbative effects are taken into account.

Numerical results of two-dimensional N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills theory

We report the results of a numerical simulation of a lattice formulation of the two-dimensional N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills theory proposed by Suzuki and Taniguchi. We measure the 1-point functions and 2-point functions. The scenario is that only tuning of the scalar mass to a specific value gives a supersymmetric continuum limit. Our results are consistent with this scenario although conclusive results on the restoration of supersymmetry have not been obtained.

Relationship between various supersymmetric lattice models

We comment on the relationships between several supersymmetric lattice models; the ``orbifold lattice theory'' by Cohen-Kaplan-Katz-Unsal (CKKU), lattice regularization of the topological field theory by Sugino and the ``geometrical approach'' by Catterall. We point out that these three models have close relationships; the N =(2,2) model by Catterall [Catterall] and the two-dimensional N = (2,2) lattice theory being similar to Sugino's construction [Sugino] can be derived by appropriate truncation of fields in the two-dimensional N = (4,4) orbifold lattice theory by CKKU [Cohen et al]. Catterall's N = (2,2) description possesses extra degrees of freedom compared to the target N = (2,2) theory. If we remove those extra degrees of freedom in a way keeping supersymmetry on the lattice, Catterall's description reduces to a model of the Sugino type.

Note on massless bosonic states in two-dimensional field theories

In a wide class of $G_L\times G_R$ invariant two-dimensional super-renormalizable field theories, the parity-odd part of the two-point function of global currents is completely determined by a fermion one-loop diagram. For any non-trivial fermion content, the two-point function possesses a massless pole which corresponds to massless bosonic physical states. As an application, we show that two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric gauge theory without a superpotential possesses $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ symmetry and contains one massless bosonic state per fixed spatial momentum. The $\mathcal{N}=(4,4)$ supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills theory possesses $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$ symmetry, and there exist at least three massless bosonic states.

Lattice Formulation of Two Dimensional Topological Field Theory

We investigate an integrable property and observables of 2 dimensional N=(4,4) topological field theory defined on a discrete lattice by using the "orbifolding" and "deconstruction" methods. We show that our lattice model possesses the integrability and the partition function reduces to matrix integrals of scalar fields on sites in consequence. We make clear meaningful differences between the discrete lattice and differentiable manifold, which would be important to a study of topological quantities on the lattice. We also propose a new construction of N=(2,2) supersymmetric lattice theory, which is realized by a suitable truncation of scalar fields from the N=(4,4) theory.

Perturbative Study of the Supersymmetric Lattice Model from Matrix Model

We study the lattice model for the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions proposed by Cohen, Kaplan, Katz, and Unsal. We re-examine the formal proof for the absence of susy breaking counter terms as well as the stability of the vacuum by an explicit perturbative calculation for the case of U(2) gauge group. Introducing fermion masses and treating the bosonic zero momentum mode nonperturbatively, we avoid the infra-red divergences in the perturbative calculation. As a result, we find that there appear mass counter terms for finite volume which vanish in the infinite volume limit so that the theory needs no fine-tuning.
