A parsimonious approach to $C^2$ cubic splines on arbitrary triangulations: Reduced macro-elements on the cubic Wang-Shi split

We present a general method to obtain interesting subspaces of the $C^2$ cubic spline space defined on the cubic Wang-Shi refinement of a given arbitrary triangulation $\mathcal{T}$. These subspaces are characterized by specific Hermite degrees of freedom associated with only the vertices and edges of $\mathcal{T}$, or even only the vertices of $\mathcal{T}$. Each subspace still contains cubic polynomials while saving a consistent number of degrees of freedom compared with the full space. The dimension of the considered subspaces can be as small as six times the number of vertices of $\mathcal{T}$. The method fits in the setting of macro-elements: any function of such a subspace can be constructed on each triangle of $\mathcal{T}$ separately by specifying the necessary Hermite degrees of freedom. The explicit local representation in terms of a local simplex spline basis is also provided. This simplex spline basis intrinsically takes care of the complex geometry of the Wang-Shi split, making it transparent to the user.

Construction of $C^2$ cubic splines on arbitrary triangulations

In this paper, we address the problem of constructing $C^2$ cubic spline functions on a given arbitrary triangulation $\mathcal{T}$. To this end, we endow every triangle of $\mathcal{T}$ with a Wang-Shi macro-structure. The $C^2$ cubic space on such a refined triangulation has a stable dimension and optimal approximation power. Moreover, any spline function in such space can be locally built on each of the macro-triangles independently via Hermite interpolation. We provide a simplex spline basis for the space of $C^2$ cubics defined on a single macro-triangle which behaves like a Bernstein/B-spline basis over the triangle. The basis functions inherit recurrence relations and differentiation formulas from the simplex spline construction, they form a nonnegative partition of unity, they admit simple conditions for $C^2$ joins across the edges of neighboring triangles, and they enjoy a Marsden-like identity. Also, there is a single control net to facilitate control and early visualization of a spline function over the macro-triangle. Thanks to these properties, the complex geometry of the Wang-Shi macro-structure is transparent to the user. Stable global bases for the full space of $C^2$ cubics on the Wang-Shi refined triangulation $\mathcal{T}$ are deduced from the local simplex spline basis by extending the concept of minimal determining sets.

B-spline-like bases for $C^2$ cubics on the Powell-Sabin 12-split

For spaces of constant, linear, and quadratic splines of maximal smoothness on the Powell-Sabin 12-split of a triangle, the so-called S-bases were recently introduced. These are simplex spline bases with B-spline-like properties on the 12-split of a single triangle, which are tied together across triangles in a B\'ezier-like manner. In this paper we give a formal definition of an S-basis in terms of certain basic properties. We proceed to investigate the existence of S-bases for the aforementioned spaces and additionally the cubic case, resulting in an exhaustive list. From their nature as simplex splines, we derive simple differentiation and recurrence formulas to other S-bases. We establish a Marsden identity that gives rise to various quasi-interpolants and domain points forming an intuitive control net, in terms of which conditions for $C^0$-, $C^1$-, and $C^2$-smoothness are derived.

Local approximation operators on box meshes

This paper analyzes the approximation properties of spaces of piece-wise tensor product polynomials over box meshes with a focus on application to IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA). The errors are measured in Lebesgue norms. Estimates of different types are considered: local and global, with full or reduced Sobolev seminorms. Attention is also paid to the dependence on the degree and exponential convergence is proved for the approximation of analytic functions.

Stable simplex spline bases for $C^3$ quintics on the Powell-Sabin 12-split

For the space of $C^3$ quintics on the Powell-Sabin 12-split of a triangle, we determine explicitly the six symmetric simplex spline bases that reduce to a B-spline basis on each edge, have a positive partition of unity, a Marsden identity that splits into real linear factors, and an intuitive domain mesh. The bases are stable in the $L_\infty$ norm with a condition number independent of the geometry, have a well-conditioned Lagrange interpolant at the domain points, and a quasi-interpolant with local approximation order 6. We show an $h^2$ bound for the distance between the control points and the values of a spline at the corresponding domain points. For one of these bases we derive $C^0$, $C^1$, $C^2$ and $C^3$ conditions on the control points of two splines on adjacent macrotriangles.

A Hermite interpolatory subdivision scheme for $C^2$-quintics on the Powell-Sabin 12-split

In order to construct a $C^1$-quadratic spline over an arbitrary triangulation, one can split each triangle into 12 subtriangles, resulting in a finer triangulation known as the Powell-Sabin 12-split. It has been shown previously that the corresponding spline surface can be plotted quickly by means of a Hermite subdivision scheme. In this paper we introduce a nodal macro-element on the 12-split for the space of quintic splines that are locally $C^3$ and globally $C^2$. For quickly evaluating any such spline, a Hermite subdivision scheme is derived, implemented, and tested in the computer algebra system Sage. Using the available first derivatives for Phong shading, visually appealing plots can be generated after just a couple of refinements.
