Reducing the domain of discrete multi-time determinantal point processes

We consider a class of discrete multi-time determinantal point processes whose correlation kernels admit a double-contour integral form, containing Schur processes as simple examples. We show that the form of the correlation kernel is preserved under conditioning of the point process to a restricted domain, however, with an integrand which becomes more complicated and which is characterized by a Riemann-Hilbert problem. We apply our general result to domino tilings of reduced Aztec diamonds and to lozenge tilings of hexagons with holes. Our results show a striking analogy with the Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov method for integrable kernels.

Biorthogonal ensembles of derivative type

In this paper, we prove that biorthogonal ensembles on the real line with a specific derivative structure admit an explicit correlation kernel of double contour integral form. We will demonstrate that this expression is a valuable starting point for asymptotic analysis and that our class of biorthogonal ensembles admits a large variety of limit kernels, by proving that two new classes of limit kernels can occur. The first type is a deformation of the hard edge Bessel kernel which arises in polynomial ensembles describing the eigenvalues of the sum of two random matrices, while the second type arises for Muttalib-Borodin type deformations of polynomial ensembles.

Asymptotics for the number of domino tilings of L-shaped Aztec domains

We obtain precise asymptotics for the weighted number of domino tilings of an L-shaped subset of the Aztec diamond, obtained by removing an approximate rectangle in a corner of the Aztec diamond. By tuning the size of the removed corner, we observe different types of asymptotics. For a small removed corner, the number of tilings is close to that of the full Aztec diamond. Enlarging the removed corner to a critical size, a phase transition described in terms of the Tracy-Widom distribution occurs. Further increasing the size of the removed region, we observe a sharp decrease of the number of tilings, until it is finally approximated by the number of tilings of two smaller disjoint Aztec diamonds. We obtain uniform asymptotics for the number of domino tilings which fully describe these transitions.

Counting domino and lozenge tilings of reduced domains with Pad\'{e}-type approximants

We introduce a new method for studying gap probabilities in a class of discrete determinantal point processes with double contour integral kernels. This class of point processes includes uniform measures of domino and lozenge tilings as well as their doubly periodic generalizations. We use a Fourier series approach to simplify the form of the kernels and to characterize gap probabilities in terms of Riemann-Hilbert problems. As a first illustration of our approach, we obtain an explicit expression for the number of domino tilings of reduced Aztec diamonds in terms of Pad\'e approximants, by solving the associated Riemann-Hilbert problem explicitly. As a second application, we obtain an explicit expression for the number of lozenge tilings of (simply connected) reduced hexagons in terms of Hermite-Pad\'e approximants. For more complicated domains, such as hexagons with holes, the number of tilings involves a generalization of Hermite-Pad\'e approximants.

Deformations of biorthogonal ensembles and universality

We consider a large class of deformations of continuous and discrete biorthogonal ensembles and investigate their behavior in the limit of a large number of particles. We provide sufficient conditions to ensure that if a biorthogonal ensemble converges to a (universal) limiting process, then the deformed biorthogonal ensemble converges to a deformed version of the same limiting process. To construct the deformed version of the limiting process, we rely on a procedure of marking and conditioning. Our approach is based on an analysis of the probability generating functionals of the ensembles and is conceptually different from the traditional approach via correlation kernels. Thanks to this method, our sufficient conditions are rather mild and do not rely on much regularity of the original ensemble and of the deformation. As a consequence of our results, we obtain probabilistic interpretations of several Painlev\'e-type kernels that have been constructed in the literature, as deformations of classical sine and Airy point processes.

Large deviations for the log-Gamma polymer

We conjecture an explicit expression for the lower tail large deviation rate function of the partition function of the log-Gamma polymer. We rigorously prove our result, except for one step for which we only provide heuristic evidence. We show that the large deviation rate function matches with that of last passage percolation with exponential weights in the zero-temperature limit, and with the lower tail of the Tracy-Widom distribution for moderate deviations.

Biorthogonal measures, polymer partition functions, and random matrices

We develop the study of a particular class of biorthogonal measures, encompassing at the same time several random matrix models and partition functions of polymers. This general framework allows us to characterize the partition functions of the Log Gamma polymer and the mixed polymer in terms of explicit biorthogonal measures, as it was previously done for the homogeneous O'Connell-Yor polymer by Imamura and Sasamoto. In addition, we show that the biorthogonal measures associated to these three polymer models (Log Gamma, O'Connell-Yor, and mixed polymer) converge to random matrix eigenvalue distributions in small temperature limits. We also clarify the connection between different Fredholm determinant representations and explain how our results might be useful for asymptotic analysis and large deviation estimates.

On the integrable structure of deformed sine kernel determinants

We study a family of Fredholm determinants associated to deformations of the sine kernel, parametrized by a weight function w. For a specific choice of w, this kernel describes bulk statistics of finite temperature free fermions. We establish a connection between these determinants and a system of integro-differential equations generalizing the fifth Painlev\'e equation, and we show that they allow us to solve an integrable PDE explicitly for a large class of initial data.

J\'anossy densities and Darboux transformations for the Stark and cylindrical KdV equations

We study J\'anossy densities of a randomly thinned Airy kernel determinantal point process. We prove that they can be expressed in terms of solutions to the Stark and cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equations; these solutions are Darboux tranformations of the simpler ones related to the gap probability of the same thinned Airy point process. Moreover, we prove that the associated wave functions satisfy a variation of Amir-Corwin-Quastel's integro-differential Painlev\'e II equation. Finally, we derive tail asymptotics for the relevant solutions to the cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equation and show that they decompose asymptotically into a superposition of simpler solutions.

Weak and strong confinement in the Freud random matrix ensemble and gap probabilities

The Freud ensemble of random matrices is the unitary invariant ensemble corresponding to the weight $\exp(-n |x|^{\beta})$, $\beta>0$, on the real line. We consider the local behaviour of eigenvalues near zero, which exhibits a transition in $\beta$. If $\beta\ge 1$, it is described by the standard sine process. Below the critical value $\beta=1$, it is described by a process depending on the value of $\beta$, and we determine the first two terms of the large gap probability in it. This so called weak confinement range $0<\beta<1$ corresponds to the Freud weight with the indeterminate moment problem. We also find the multiplicative constant in the asymptotic expansion of the Freud multiple integral for $\beta\ge 1$.

Moments of Moments of the Characteristic Polynomials of Random Orthogonal and Symplectic Matrices

Using asymptotics of Toeplitz+Hankel determinants, we establish formulae for the asymptotics of the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices, as the matrix-size tends to infinity. Our results are analogous to those that Fahs obtained for random unitary matrices in [14]. A key feature of the formulae we derive is that the phase transitions in the moments of moments are seen to depend on the symmetry group in question in a significant way.

Universality for random matrices with equi-spaced external source: a case study of a biorthogonal ensemble

We prove the edge and bulk universality of random Hermitian matrices with equi-spaced external source. One feature of our method is that we use neither a Christoffel-Darboux type formula, nor a double-contour formula, which are standard methods to prove universality results for exactly solvable models. This matrix model is an example of a biorthogonal ensemble, which is a special kind of determinantal point process whose kernel generally does not have a Christoffel-Darboux type formula or double-contour representation. Our methods may showcase how to handle universality problems for biorthogonal ensembles in general.

Determinantal point processes conditioned on randomly incomplete configurations

For a broad class of point processes, including determinantal point processes, we construct associated marked and conditional ensembles, which allow to study a random configuration in the point process, based on information about a randomly incomplete part of the configuration. We show that our construction yields a well behaving transformation of sufficiently regular point processes. In the case of determinantal point processes, we explain that special cases of the conditional ensembles already appear implicitly in the literature, namely in the study of unitary invariant random matrix ensembles, in the Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov method to analyze Fredholm determinants, and in the study of number rigidity. As applications of our construction, we show that a class of determinantal point processes induced by orthogonal projection operators, including the sine, Airy, and Bessel point processes, satisfy a strengthened notion of number rigidity, and we give a probabilistic interpretation of the Its-Izergin-Korepin-Slavnov method.

Uniform tail asymptotics for Airy kernel determinant solutions to KdV and for the narrow wedge solution to KPZ

We obtain uniform asymptotics for deformed Airy kernel determinants, which arise in models of finite temperature free fermions and which characterize the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. The asymptotics for the determinants yield uniform initial data for an associated family of solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation, and uniform lower tail asymptotics for the narrow wedge solution of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Airy kernel determinant solutions to the KdV equation and integro-differential Painlev\'e equations

We study a family of unbounded solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation which can be constructed as log-derivatives of deformed Airy kernel Fredholm determinants, and which are connected to an integro-differential version of the second Painlev\'e equation. The initial data of the Korteweg-de Vries solutions are well-defined for $x>0$, but not for $x<0$, where the solutions behave like $\frac{x}{2t}$ as $t\to 0$, and hence would be well-defined as solutions of the cylindrical Korteweg-de Vries equation. We provide uniform asymptotics in $x$ as $t\to 0$; for $x>0$ they involve an integro-differential analogue of the Painlev\'e V equation. A special case of our results yields improved estimates for the {tails} of the narrow wedge solution to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Asymptotics for averages over classical orthogonal ensembles

We study averages of multiplicative eigenvalue statistics in ensembles of orthogonal Haar distributed matrices, which can alternatively be written as Toeplitz+Hankel determinants. We obtain new asymptotics for symbols with Fisher-Hartwig singularities in cases where some of the singularities merge together, and for symbols with a gap or an emerging gap. We obtain these asymptotics by relying on known analogous results in the unitary group and on asymptotics for associated orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As consequences of our results, we derive asymptotics for gap probabilities in the Circular Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles, and an upper bound for the global eigenvalue rigidity in the orthogonal ensembles.

Global rigidity and exponential moments for soft and hard edge point processes

We establish sharp global rigidity upper bounds for universal determinantal point processes describing edge eigenvalues of random matrices. For this, we first obtain a general result which can be applied to general (not necessarily determinantal) point processes which have a smallest (or largest) point: it allows to deduce global rigidity upper bounds from the exponential moments of the counting function of the process. By combining this with known exponential moment asymptotics for the Airy and Bessel point processes, we improve on the best known upper bounds for the global rigidity of the Airy point process, and we obtain new global rigidity results for the Bessel point process. Secondly, we obtain exponential moment asymptotics for the Wright's generalized Bessel process and the Meijer-$\mathrm{G}$ process, up to and including the constant term. As a direct consequence, we obtain new results for the expectation and variance of the associated counting functions. Furthermore, by combining these asymptotics with our general rigidity theorem, we obtain new global rigidity upper bounds for these point processes.

Critical Behavior of Non-Intersecting Brownian Motions

We study $n$ non-intersecting Brownian motions corresponding to initial configurations which have a vanishing density in the large $n$ limit at an interior point of the support. It is understood that the point of vanishing can propagate up to a critical time, and we investigate the nature of the microscopic space-time correlations near the critical point and critical time. We show that they are described either by the Pearcey process or by the Airy line ensemble, depending on whether a simple integral related to the initial configuration vanishes or not. Since the Airy line ensemble typically arises near edge points of the macroscopic density, its appearance in the interior of the spectrum is surprising. We explain this phenomenon by showing that, even though there is no gap of macroscopic size near the critical point, there is with high probability a gap of mesoscopic size. Moreover, we identify a path which follows the Airy$_2$ process.
