Boundedness of Harmonic Conjugation on Weighted Bergman Spaces

We prove that if a weight is a Bekoll\'{e}-Bonami weight for some $q$ and it satisfies another simple condition that depends on $0 < p < \infty$, then the operator taking a function to its harmonic conjugate is bounded on the harmonic Bergman space $a^p$. One part of our results uses a certain special type of good lambda inequality.

Rational Approximations via Hankel Determinants

Define the monomials $e_n(x) := x^n$ and let $L$ be a linear functional. In this paper we describe a method which, under specified conditions, produces approximations for the value $L(e_0 )$ in terms of Hankel determinants constructed from the values $L(e_1 )$, $L(e_2 )$, . . . . Many constants of mathematical interest can be expressed as the values of integrals. Examples include the Euler-Mascheroni constant $\gamma$, the Euler-Gompertz constant $\delta$, and the Riemann-zeta constants $\zeta(k)$ for $k \ge 2$. In many cases we can use the integral representation for the constant to construct a linear functional for which $L(e_0)$ equals the given constant and $L(e_1)$, $L(e_2)$, . . . are rational numbers. In this case, under the specified conditions, we obtain rational approximations for our constant. In particular, we execute this procedure for the previously mentioned constants $\gamma$, $\delta$, and $\zeta(k)$. We note that our approximations are not strong enough to study the arithmetic properties of these constants.

Subcritical Bifurcations in the Kuramoto Model with Positive Coupling

The Kuramoto model is a standard model for the dynamics of coupled oscillator networks. In particular, it is used to study long time behavior such as phase-locking where all oscillators rotate at a common frequency with fixed angle differences. It has been observed that phase-locking occurs if the natural frequencies of the oscillators are sufficiently close to each other, and doesn't if they aren't. Intuitively, the closer the natural frequencies are to each other the more stable the system is. In this paper, we study the Kuramoto model on ring networks with positive coupling between the oscillators and derive a criterion for a bifurcation in which two branches of phase-locked solutions collide as we increase the coupling strengths. Furthermore, we state a criterion for when one of these branches consists of stable phase-locked solutions. In this case stability is lost as the positive coupling is increased. We then apply our criteria to show that for any size of the ring network there always exists choices of the natural frequencies and coupling strengths so that this bifurcation occurs. (We require at least five oscillators for one branch to consist of stable phase-locked solutions.) Finally, we conjecture that generically our bifurcation is locally a subcritical bifurcation and globally an $S$-curve. (In the case where one branch consists of phase-locked solutions, an $S$-curve results in bistability i.e. the existence of two distinct stable phase-locked solutions.) Finally, we note that our methods are constructive.

Bergman and Szego projections, Extremal Problems, and Square Functions

We study estimates for Hardy space norms of analytic projections. We first find a sufficient condition for the Bergman projection of a function in the unit disc to belong to the Hardy space $H^p$ for $1 < p < \infty$. We apply the result to prove a converse to an extension of Ryabykh's theorem about Hardy space regularity for Bergman space extremal functions. We also prove that the $H^q$ norm of the Szeg\"{o} projection of $F^{p/2} \overline{F}^{(p/2)-1}$ cannot be too small if $F$ is analytic, for certain values of $p$ and $q$. We apply this to show that the best analytic approximation in $L^p$ of a function in both $L^p$ and $L^q$ will also lie in $L^q$, for certain values of $p$ and $q$.

Equivalence among various variable exponent Hardy or Bergman spaces

We study the question of when two weighted variable exponent Bergman spaces or Hardy spaces are equivalent. As an application, we show that variable exponent Hardy spaces have a close relation to classical Hardy spaces when the exponent is log-H\"{o}lder continuous and has bounded harmonic conjugate (when extended from its boundary values to be harmonic in the disc). We use this to characterize Carleson measures for these variable exponent Hardy spaces. We also prove under certain conditions an analogue of Littlewood subordination and a result on the boundedness of composition operators.

Volume Bounds for the Phase-locking Region in the Kuramoto Model with Asymmetric Coupling

The Kuramoto model is a system of nonlinear differential equations that models networks of coupled oscillators and is often used to study synchronization among them. It has been observed that if the natural frequencies of the oscillators are similar they will phase-lock, meaning that they oscillate at a common frequency with fixed phase differences. Conversely, we do not observe this behavior when the natural frequencies are very dissimilar. Previously, Bronski and the author gave upper and lower bounds for the volume of the set of frequencies exhibiting phase-locking behavior. This was done under the assumption that any two oscillators affect each other with equal strength. In this paper the author generalizes these upper and lower bounds by removing this assumption. Similar to the previous work with Bronski, where the upper and lower bounds are sums over spanning trees of the network, our generalized upper and lower bounds are sums over certain directed subgraphs of the network. In particular, our lower bound is a sum over directed spanning trees. Finally, we numerically simulate the dependence of the number of directed spanning trees on the presence of certain two edge motifs in the network and compare this dependence with that of the synchronization of oscillator models found by Nykamp, Zhao, and collaborators.

Motifs, Coherent Configurations and Second Order Network Generation

In this paper we illuminate some algebraic-combinatorial structure underlying the second order networks (SONETS) random graph model of Nykamp, Zhao and collaborators. In particular we show that this algorithm is deeply connected with a certain homogeneous coherent configuration, a non-commuting generalization of the classical Johnson scheme. This algebraic structure underlies certain surprising identities (that do not appear to have been previously observed) satisfied by the covariance matrices in the Nykamp-Zhao scheme. We show that an understanding of this algebraic structure leads to simplified numerical methods for carrying out the linear algebra required to implement the SONETS algorithm. We also show that this structure extends naturally to the problem of generating random subgraphs of graphs other than the complete directed graph.

Sums of Weighted Differentiation Composition Operators

We solve an interpolation problem in $A^p_\alpha$ involving specifying a set of (possibly not distinct) $n$ points, where the $k^{\textrm{th}}$ derivative at the $k^{\textrm{th}}$ point is up to a constant as large as possible for functions of unit norm. The solution obtained has norm bounded by a constant independent of the points chosen. As a direct application, we obtain a characterization of the order-boundedness of a sum of products of weighted composition and differentiation operators acting between weighted Bergman spaces. We also characterize the compactness of such operators that map a weighted Bergman space into the space of bounded analytic functions.

Uniform Approximation of Extremal Functions in Weighted Bergman Spaces

We discuss approximation of extremal functions by polynomials in the weighted Bergman spaces $A^p_\alpha$ where $-1 < \alpha < 0$ and $-1 < \alpha < p-2$. We obtain bounds on how close the approximation is to the true extremal function in the $A^p_\alpha$ and uniform norms. We also discuss several results on the relation between the Bergman modulus of continuity of a function and how quickly its best polynomial approximants converge to it.

Topological States in the Kuramoto Model

The Kuramoto model is a system of nonlinear differential equations that models networks of coupled oscillators and is often used to study synchronization among the oscillators. In this paper we study steady state solutions of the Kuramoto model by assigning to each steady state a tuple of integers which records how the state twists around the cycles in the network. We then use this new classification of steady states to obtain a "Weyl" type of asymptotic estimate for the number of steady states as the number of oscillators becomes arbitrarily large while preserving the cycle structure. We further show how this asymptotic estimate can be maximized, and as a special case we obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the number of stable steady states of the model.

The range and valence of a real Smirnov function

We give a complete description of the possible ranges of real Smirnov functions (quotients of two bounded analytic functions on the open unit disk where the denominator is outer and such that the radial boundary values are real almost everywhere on the unit circle). Our techniques use the theory of unbounded symmetric Toeplitz operators, some general theory of unbounded symmetric operators, classical Hardy spaces, and an application of the uniformization theorem. In addition, we completely characterize the possible valences for these real Smirnov functions when the valence is finite. To do so we construct Riemann surfaces we call disk trees by welding together copies of the unit disk and its complement in the Riemann sphere. We also make use of certain trees we call valence trees that mirror the structure of disk trees.

Bergman-H\"older Functions, Area Integral Means and Extremal Problems

We study certain weighted area integral means of analytic functions in the unit disc. We relate the growth of these means to the property of being mean H\"older continuous with respect to the Bergman space norm. In contrast with earlier work, we use the second iterated difference quotient instead of the first. We then give applications to Bergman space extremal problems.

Graph Homology and Stability of Coupled Oscillator Networks

There are a number of models of coupled oscillator networks where the question of the stability of fixed points reduces to calculating the index of a graph Laplacian. Some examples of such models include the Kuramoto and Kuramoto--Sakaguchi equations as well as the swing equations, which govern the behavior of generators coupled in an electrical network. We show that the index calculation can be related to a dual calculation which is done on the first homology group of the graph, rather than the vertex space. We also show that this representation is computationally attractive for relatively sparse graphs, where the dimension of the first homology group is low, as is true in many applications. We also give explicit formulae for the dimension of the unstable manifold to a phase-locked solution for graphs containing one or two loops. As an application, we present some novel results for the Kuramoto model defined on a ring and compute the longest possible edge length for a stable solution.

Bounds on Integral Means of Bergman Projections and their Derivatives

We bound integral means of the Bergman projection of a function in terms of integral means of the original function. As an application of these results, we bound certain weighted Bergman space norms of derivatives of Bergman projections in terms of weighted $L^p$ norms of certain derivatives of the original function in the $\theta$ direction. These results easily imply the well known result that the Bergman projection is bounded from the Sobolev space $W^{k,p}$ into itself for $1 < p < \infty$. We also apply our results to derive certain regularity results involving extremal problems in Bergman spaces. Lastly, we construct a function that approaches $0$ uniformly at the boundary of the unit disc but whose Bergman projection is not in $H^2$.

Extremal Problems in Bergman Spaces and an Extension of Ryabykh's $H^p$ Regularity Theorem For $1<p<\infty$

We study linear extremal problems in the Bergman space $A^p$ of the unit disc, where $1 < p < \infty$. Given a functional on the dual space of $A^p$ with representing kernel $k \in A^q$, where $1/p + 1/q = 1$, we show that if $q \le q_1 < \infty$ and $k \in H^{q_1}$, then $F \in H^{(p-1)q_1}$. This result was previously known only in the case where $p$ is an even integer. We also discuss related results.

Regularity of Extremal Functions in Weighted Bergman and Fock Type Spaces

We discuss the regularity of extremal functions in certain weighted Bergman and Fock type spaces. Given an appropriate analytic function $k$, the corresponding extremal function is the function with unit norm maximizing $\text{Re} \int_\Omega f(z) \overline{k(z)}\, \nu(z) \, dA(z)$ over all functions $f$ of unit norm, where $\nu$ is the weight function and $\Omega$ is the domain of the functions in the space. We consider the case where $\nu(z)$ is a decreasing radial function satisfying some additional assumptions, and where $\Omega$ is either a disc centered at the origin or the entire complex plane. We show that if $k$ grows slowly in a certain sense, then $f$ must grow slowly in a related sense. We also discuss a relation between the integrability and growth of certain log-convex functions, and apply the result to obtain information about the growth of integral means of extremal functions in Fock type spaces.
