Testing F-theory GUTs with the Axiverse

We show that axions coupled to photons in F-theory Grand Unified Theories (GUTs) satisfy the coupling-to-mass relation $g_{a\gamma}/m_a \leq C\, \frac{\alpha_{\rm em}}{2\pi}\frac{1}{m_\pi f_\pi}$, with $C$ a calculable coefficient. This bound is saturated for the QCD axion with $C = \mathcal{O}(1)$ and holds in field theoretic and perturbative heterotic GUT constructions. In F-theory, topological GUT symmetry breaking by hypercharge flux introduces axion-like particles (ALPs) coupled to photons without coupling to QCD. These ALPs arise from the non-universal holomorphic threshold corrections to the gauge kinetic functions induced by the hypercharge flux. When gauge couplings approximately unify near the string scale, as required in phenomenologically viable models, the shift symmetries of these ALPs are broken by D-instantons whose action is controlled by the size of the threshold corrections to the gauge couplings. Small corrections imply unsuppressed instantons and heavy ALPs. We compute the resulting axion potentials and show that the coupling-to-mass ratio $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ for every non-universal ALP lies well below the QCD axion prediction. We consider possible loopholes to this result -- some of which could lead to $C\gg 1$ -- and argue that none of them allows for $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ to be arbitrarily above the QCD axion prediction within regions of control for the effective action. The bound persists in models with large threshold corrections, where new incomplete GUT multiplets at intermediate energy scales are required. As a result, in the geometric regime, where the $\alpha'$ expansion is under control, no ALP parametrically above the QCD axion band exists. Our results make F-theory GUTs falsifiable: finding an ALP far above the QCD band, for example discovering axion-induced cosmic birefringence, rules out F-theory GUTs in regimes of control of the effective theory.

On Quantum Obstructions in Type IIA Orientifolds

Quantum corrections can severely modify or even remove classical infinite distance limits in four-dimensional gravity theories with minimal N=1 supersymmetry. In this note we study this effect for infinite distance directions in the classical K\"ahler moduli sector of Type IIA orientifolds at fixed four-dimensional dilaton. We present several independent arguments why such infinite distance directions are absent at the quantum level. These involve the worldsheet theory of EFT strings and the putative asymptotically massless tower of particles. Key insights are provided by the uplift to M-theory on G2 manifolds, which allows for a unified treatment of quantum obstructions of seemingly different origin in the dual Type IIB/F-theory frame. Our results apply also to the Type IIA dual of infinite distance limits for which no quantum obstruction could be detected in the Type IIB frame in previous work. In conclusion, infinite distance limits in the part of the orientifold moduli space descending from a 4d N=2 vector multiplet sector are only possible at the quantum level if also some of the remaining moduli are taken to infinity.

Bounds on the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic fibrations

We prove that the Mordell-Weil group of a higher dimensional elliptic fibration naturally embeds into that of a suitable elliptic surface. We give sufficient conditions for the existence of such surfaces. We apply our result to obtain explicit and uniform bounds for the Mordell-Weil rank of elliptic threefolds of Kodaira dimension zero, including Calabi-Yau threefolds, confirming predictions from physics. We prove new explicit bounds for a broad class of elliptic fourfolds. These results suggest a general linear bound for the Mordell-Weil rank in terms of the dimension of the elliptic fibration, which we formulate as a conjecture.

Quantum obstructions for $N=1$ infinite distance limits -- Part II: K\"ahler obstructions

We continue our analysis of quantum corrections in the complex structure moduli space of four-dimensional Type IIB/F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. We find that limits in the complex structure moduli space of F-theory generically induce a strong backreaction on other sectors of the theory, reflecting the non-factorisation of the field space in genuine $N=1$ theories at the quantum level. Our focus is on quantum corrections to the K\"ahler moduli in F-theory on Calabi-Yau fourfolds and proceeds in two independent ways: A detailed analysis of the worldsheet theory of candidate EFT strings for pure complex structure infinite distance limits reveals a mismatch with expectations based on the classical effective action and points to a quantum obstruction of the limit. Complementary to this, we confirm, in large classes of theories, the existence of significant complex structure dependent quantum corrections to the action of BPS instantons which at tree-level are governed by the K\"ahler moduli. As the quantum corrections become uncontrolled at large complex structure, they require a co-scaling of the K\"ahler moduli to maintain perturbative control. As a result, the naive, classical effective action does not provide an accurate description of pure large complex structure regimes. We comment on possible implications for string phenomenology, specifically with regard to model building and moduli stabilisation.

Quantum obstructions for $N=1$ infinite distance limits -- Part I: $g_s$ obstructions

We analyse quantum obstructions to classical infinite distance limits in four-dimensional string compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry. Such quantum effects signal a severe departure from the perturbative effective action and can be of considerable importance for string model building. Our focus is on the complex structure moduli space of Type IIB orientifolds with O7/O3-planes and its F-theory description. In this first part of our analysis, we investigate the behaviour of $g_s$ corrections in infinite distance complex structure limits. Our main finding is that, depending on the location of the O7-plane, non-perturbative corrections in $g_s$ can become unsuppressed, thus obstructing a perturbative Type IIB description in the corresponding asymptotic region of the field space. In particular, this applies to large complex structure limits. To show this, we study the F-theory description of the Type IIB orientifold, in which all pure $g_s$ corrections are encoded in the (classical) geometry of an elliptic Calabi-Yau fourfold. This $g_s$-corrected moduli space is found to differ significantly from the classical moduli space. In extreme cases the classical infinite distance degeneration can be completely removed at the $g_s$-corrected quantum level. The behaviour of $\alpha'$ corrections, as well as implications for string model building, are discussed in a companion paper.

Multiplet Recombination and the CFT Distance Conjecture

Motivated by quantum gravity and the CFT Distance Conjecture, we study infinite-distance limits in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theories with higher-dimensional conformal manifolds and their AdS duals. We focus on partial decoupling limits where a gauge sector becomes weakly coupled while an interacting sector persists. We analyse the structure of towers of states emerging in these limits. The weakly coupled sector contributes, among others, the massless higher-spin tower predicted by the CFT Distance Conjecture exhibiting polynomial degeneracy. The key novelty is the appearance of a protected BPS tower in the interacting sector, characterised by exponential degeneracy and masses at the AdS scale. This structure follows from multiplet recombination in the ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal algebra: As unprotected long multiplets hit the unitarity bound at weak coupling, they recombine into protected short multiplets. We verify this picture through an explicit one-loop computation in the simplest two-node quiver gauge theory with a two-dimensional conformal manifold.

K-Points and Type IIB/Heterotic Duality with NS5-Branes

We revisit type II$_0$ limits in the vector multiplet moduli space of compactifications of Type IIB string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. These limits are special because they cannot be described using mirror symmetry. While we showed in previous work that the gravitational duality frame emerging in such limits corresponds to a weakly coupled heterotic string compactified on K3 times a string-sized torus, our focus here is on the additional field theory sectors that decouple from gravity in these asymptotic regimes. Concretely, we argue that, in the dual heterotic description, these field theory sectors correspond to spacetime-filling NS5-branes wrapping the heterotic torus. The existence of such non-perturbative field theory sectors manifests itself in an exponential dependence of the prepotential on the heterotic dilaton at leading order. Applied to K-point limits in one-parameter moduli spaces, our results imply that these limits are in perfect agreement with the Distance and Emergent String Conjectures. More precisely, the light tower of states predicted by the Distance Conjecture arises from excitations of a weakly coupled heterotic string compactified to four dimensions on a background containing spacetime-filling NS5-branes.

Testing the Heterotic String with the Axion-Photon Coupling

The discovery of an axion-like particle above the QCD line would rule out Grand Unified Theories, including the perturbative heterotic string with the Standard Model embedded in a single $E_8$ factor or $SO(32)$. In this work we study a possible loophole to this observation, given by compactifications of the $E_8\times E_8$ heterotic string with a non-standard embedding of the Standard Model into the 10-dimensional gauge group. If electromagnetism is embedded into both $E_8$ factors, axions can couple to photons via the anomaly without coupling to QCD. We obtain upper bounds to the coupling-to-mass ratio $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ for these axion-like particles as a function of the supersymmetry breaking scale and the unified gauge coupling. To be compatible with the measured gauge couplings and the weak mixing angle $\sin^2\theta_w$ at low-energies, phenomenologically viable models with non-standard $U(1)_Y$ embedding require sizeable one-loop threshold corrections from string states and/or charged matter at intermediate energy scales. We study how these effects modify the tree-level upper bounds to $g_{a\gamma}/m_a$ and show that, in the perturbative regime, they reduce the leading order estimates. Axion-like particles far above the QCD line are only possible in certain models where perturbation theory is lost. The main conclusion is that the discovery of an axion violating the bounds found in this work would be incompatible with large classes of otherwise phenomenologically viable string models, including the perturbative heterotic $SO(32)$ and $E_8\times E_8$ string, the type-I string, and certain heterotic M-theories. The role of small gauge instantons and worldsheet instantons in making some of the axion-like particles heavy and cosmologically relevant is briefly discussed.

Physics and Geometry of Complex Structure Limits in Type IIB Calabi-Yau Compactifications

We provide a detailed geometric and physical interpretation of infinite distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of Type IIB compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds, motivated by the Emergent String Conjecture. In the framework of semi-stable degenerations, such limits are characterised by a simple fibration structure of the fastest vanishing three-cycles. The previously studied Hodge theoretic classification of infinite distance limits of type II, III, and IV is reflected in the number of one-cycles of the shrinking fibres. Complementing our recent work on limits of type II, we focus here on type III and type IV degenerations. Based on effective field theory considerations, these are expected to be decompactification limits to 6d and 5d, respectively. However, establishing the existence of the associated Kaluza-Klein tower(s) of states with both the appropriate mass scaling and the correct degeneracy requires explicit geometric input. We show that the aforementioned vanishing three-cycles are special Lagrangian three-tori, thus giving rise to towers of asymptotically massless BPS particles from multi-wrapped D3-branes with the degeneracy of a Kaluza-Klein tower. We furthermore relate the BPS index of these three-cycles to the Euler characteristic of the threefold. Finally, we systematically analyse infinite distance trajectories in multi-parameter limits described by so-called enhancement chains. We find that the primary singularity type encodes the gravitational duality frame of the limit whereas the secondary singularity type is related to the rank of the gauge group coupled to gravity. The specifics of the asymptotic physics depend crucially on whether or not the trajectory is induced by the backreaction of an EFT string.

Emergent Strings in Type IIB Calabi--Yau Compactifications

We study infinite distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of Type IIB compactifications on Calabi--Yau threefolds, in light of the Emergent String Conjecture. We focus on the so-called type II limits, which, based on the asymptotic behaviour of the physical couplings in the low-energy effective theory, are candidates for emergent string limits. However, due to the absence of Type IIB branes of suitable dimensionality, the emergence of a unique critical string accompanied by a tower of Kaluza--Klein states has so far remained elusive. By considering a broad class of type II$_b$ limits, corresponding to so-called Tyurin degenerations, and studying the asymptotic behaviour of four-dimensional EFT strings in this geometry, we argue that the worldsheet theory of the latter describes a unique critical heterotic string on $T^2\times\mathrm{K3}$ with a gauge bundle whose rank depends on $b$. In addition, we establish the presence of an infinite tower of BPS particles arising from wrapped D3-branes by identifying a suitable set of special Lagrangian 3-cycles in the geometry. The associated BPS invariants are conjectured to be counted by generalisations of modular forms. As a consistency check, we further show that in special cases mirror symmetry identifies the EFT strings with the well-understood emergent string limits in the K\"ahler moduli space of Type IIA compactifications on K3-fibred Calabi--Yau threefolds. Finally, we discuss the implications of the Emergent String Conjecture for type II limits which do not correspond to Tyurin degenerations, and predict new constraints on the possible geometries of type II degenerations which resemble those arising in the Kulikov classification of degenerations of K3 surfaces.

Asymptotics of 5d Supergravity Theories and the Emergent String Conjecture

We invoke probe brane arguments to classify the asymptotic behavior of general five-dimensional supergravity theories with eight supercharges near infinite distance boundaries of the vector multiplet moduli space. Imposing consistency of supergravity strings we derive several constraints on the Chern-Simons couplings entering the prepotential, including their non-negativity. This establishes a classification of infinite distance limits analogous to those for theories obtained as Calabi-Yau compactifications, but without having to assume a geometric or string theoretic origin. All infinite distance limits are found to be either vector or tensor limits, depending on the nature of the gauge potential becoming weakly coupled at the fastest rate. In particular, we prove uniqueness results for the asymptotically leading gauge fields. The asymptotic physics along these limits is in perfect agreement with the predictions of the Emergent String Conjecture and hence serves as bottom-up evidence for the latter. Our findings imply that every consistent five-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with a non-compact vector multiplet moduli space either descends from six dimensions or contains a stringy subsector.

The Dark Dimension and the Grand Unification of Forces

The dark dimension scenario, predicting one extra mesoscopic dimension in the micron range, has emerged by applying various Swampland principles to the dark energy. In this note we find that realizing the grand unification of gauge forces is highly constraining in this context. Without actually constructing any GUT models, we argue that the mere assumption of grand unification of forces in this scenario, together with the experimental bounds on massive replicas of the Standard Model gauge bosons, predicts an upper bound for the GUT scale, $M_{GUT}\lesssim 10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$. Combined with the experimental bound on the proton lifetime, this predicts that the $X$ gauge boson mediating proton decay is a 5d solitonic string of Planckian tension stretched across a length scale $L\sim ({\rm 1-10\ TeV})^{-1}$ ending on gauge branes of the same diameter $\sim L$. This leads to a mass of $M_X\sim 10^{15}-10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$. In particular assuming grand unification in the dark dimension scenario results in a tower of Kaluza-Klein excitations of Standard Model gauge bosons on the gauge branes in the 1-10 TeV range. This suggests that the diameter/separation $L$ of the gauge branes correlates with both the weak scale $\sim 1/L$ near a TeV {\it and} the GUT scale $\sim M_5^2 L$ at $10^{16}\ {\rm GeV}$.

The Standard Model from String Theory: What Have We Learned?

Amidst all candidates of physics beyond the Standard Model, string theory provides a unique proposal for incorporating gauge and gravitational interactions. In string theory, a four-dimensional theory that unifies quantum mechanics and gravity is obtained automatically if one posits that the additional dimensions predicted by the theory are small and curled up, a concept known as compactification. The gauge sector of the theory is specified by the topology and geometry of the extra dimensions, and the challenge is to reproduce all the features of the Standard Model of Particle Physics from them. We review the state-of-the-art in reproducing the Standard Model from string compactifications, together with the lessons drawn from this fascinating quest. We describe novel scenarios and mechanisms that string theory provides to address some of the Standard Model puzzles, as well as the most frequent signatures of new physics that could be detected in future experiments. We finally comment on recent developments that connect, in a rather unexpected way, the Standard Model with Quantum Gravity, and that may change our field theory notion of naturalness.

Non-minimal Elliptic Threefolds at Infinite Distance II: Asymptotic Physics

We interpret infinite-distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of F-theory compactifications to six dimensions in the light of general ideas in quantum gravity. The limits we focus on arise from non-minimal singularities in the elliptic fiber over curves in a Hirzebruch surface base, which do not admit a crepant resolution. Such degenerations take place along infinite directions in the non-perturbative brane moduli space in F-theory. A blow-up procedure, detailed generally in Part I of this project, gives rise to an internal space consisting of a union of log Calabi-Yau threefolds glued together along their boundaries. We geometrically classify the resulting configurations for genus-zero single infinite-distance limits. Special emphasis is put on the structure of singular fibers in codimension zero and one. As our main result, we interpret the central fiber of these degenerations as endpoints of a decompactification limit with six-dimensional defects. The conclusions rely on an adiabatic limit to gain information on the asymptotically massless states from the structure of vanishing cycles. We also compare our analysis to the heterotic dual description where available. Our findings are in agreement with general expectations from quantum gravity and provide further evidence for the Emergent String Conjecture.

The Minimal Weak Gravity Conjecture

We examine the minimal constraints imposed by the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) on the particle spectrum of a quantum gravity theory. Towers of super-extremal states have previously been argued to be required for consistency of the WGC under circle reduction. At the same time, there exist classes of theories where no tower of super-extremal particle states below the black hole threshold has been established with current techniques. We resolve this tension by arguing for the existence of a minimal radius for circle reductions of generic quantum gravity theories. Below this threshold, the notion of a circle compactification breaks down, bypassing the need for a tower of super-extremal states to satisfy the WGC after circle reduction. Based on this we propose that if a theory satisfies the WGC at the particle level below the black hole threshold, these states are sufficient for consistency under dimensional reduction, even in absence of a tower of super-extremal particles. Apart from general arguments, we provide independent evidence for this main result in F-, M- and string theory compactifications. According to the Emergent String Conjecture the only exception to the appearance of a minimal radius arises in asymptotically weak-coupling limits for heterotic strings, which aligns with the appearance of a weakly coupled super-extremal tower of particle states. This observation motivates a Minimal Weak Gravity Conjecture which states that towers of super-extremal particles occur if and only if they are required by consistency of the WGC under dimensional reduction.

Non-minimal Elliptic Threefolds at Infinite Distance I: Log Calabi-Yau Resolutions

We study infinite-distance limits in the complex structure moduli space of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds. In F-theory compactifications to six dimensions, such limits include infinite-distance trajectories in the non-perturbative open string moduli space. The limits are described as degenerations of elliptic threefolds whose central elements exhibit non-minimal elliptic fibers, in the Kodaira sense, over curves on the base. We show how these non-crepant singularities can be removed by a systematic sequence of blow-ups of the base, leading to a union of log Calabi-Yau spaces glued together along their boundaries. We identify criteria for the blow-ups to give rise to open chains or more complicated trees of components and analyse the blow-up geometry. While our results are general and applicable to all non-minimal degenerations of Calabi-Yau threefolds in codimension one, we exemplify them in particular for elliptic threefolds over Hirzebruch surface base spaces. We also explain how to extract the gauge algebra for F-theory probing such reducible asymptotic geometries. This analysis is the basis for a detailed F-theory interpretation of the associated infinite-distance limits that will be provided in a companion paper.

The Asymptotic Weak Gravity Conjecture in M-theory

The tower Weak Gravity Conjecture predicts infinitely many super-extremal states along every ray in the charge lattice of a consistent quantum gravity theory. We show this far-reaching claim in five-dimensional compactifications of M-theory on Calabi--Yau 3-folds for gauge groups with a weak coupling limit. We first characterize the possible weak coupling limits, building on an earlier classification of infinite distance limits in the K\"ahler moduli space of M-theory compactifications. We find that weakly coupled gauge groups are associated to curves on the compactification space contained in generic fibers or in fibers degenerating at finite distance in their moduli space. These always admit an interpretation as a Kaluza--Klein or winding U$(1)$ in a dual frame or as part of a dual perturbative heterotic gauge group, in agreement with the Emergent String Conjecture. Using the connection between Donaldson--Thomas invariants and Noether--Lefschetz theory, we then show that every ray in the associated charge lattice either supports a tower of BPS states or of non-BPS states, and prove that these satisfy the super-extremality condition, at least in the weak coupling regime.

D-brane and F-theory Model Building

We review recent progress in the construction of four-dimensional vacua of Type II string theory and F-theory which yield the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) or extensions thereof. In Type II orientifold compactifications the SM gauge group and chiral spectrum arise from the open string sector of the theory, namely from stacks of D-branes. The universal features of the chiral spectrum between various sets of D-branes allow for a general approach to build realistic models, which can be implemented in different setups. We describe the realisation of this strategy in Type II Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications and Rational Conformal Field Theories, discussing the specific model building rules and features of each setting. The same philosophy can be extended to F-theory constructions. These provide new model building possibilities, as they combine the localisation properties of D-branes with exceptional gauge groups and their representations.
