Lieb-Thirring inequalities for the shifted Coulomb Hamiltonian

In this paper we prove sharp Lieb-Thirring (LT) inequalities for the family of shifted Coulomb Hamiltonians. More precisely, we prove the classical LT inequalities with the semi-classical constant for this family of operators in any dimension $d\geq 3$ and any $\gamma \geq 1$. We also prove that the semi-classical constant is never optimal for the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum (CLR) inequalities for this family of operators in any dimension. In this case, we characterize the optimal constant as the minimum of a finite set and provide an asymptotic expansion as the dimension grows. Using the same method to prove the CLR inequalities for Coulomb, we obtain more information about the conjectured optimal constant in the CLR inequality for arbitrary potentials.

Eigenvalues of the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field on disks in the strong field limit

We consider the magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian with constant magnetic field on domains of finite measure. First, in the case of a disk, we prove that the eigenvalue branches with respect to the field strength behave asymptotically linear with an exponentially small remainder term as the field strength goes to infinity. We compute the asymptotic expression for this remainder term. Second, we show that for sufficiently large magnetic field strengths, the spectral bound corresponding to the P\'olya conjecture for the non-magnetic Dirichlet Laplacian is violated up to a sharp excess factor which is independent of the domain.

An improved one-dimensional Hardy inequality

We prove a one-dimensional Hardy inequality on the halfline with sharp constant, which improves the classical form of this inequality. As a consequence of this new inequality we can rederive known doubly weighted Hardy inequalities. Our motivation comes from the theory of Schr\"odinger operators and we explain the use of Hardy inequalities in that context.

Spectral asymptotics for the Dirichlet Laplacian with a Neumann window via a Birman-Schwinger analysis of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator

In the present article we will give a new proof of the ground state asymptotics of the Dirichlet Laplacian with a Neumann window acting on functions which are defined on a two-dimensional infinite strip or a three-dimensional infinite layer. The proof is based on the analysis of the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator as a first order classical pseudo-differential operator. Using the explicit representation of its symbol we prove an asymptotic expansion as the window length decreases.

Sharp spectral estimates in domains of infinite volume

We consider the Dirichlet Laplace operator on open, quasi-bounded domains of infinite volume. For such domains semiclassical spectral estimates based on the phase-space volume - and therefore on the volume of the domain - must fail. Here we present a method how one can nevertheless prove uniform bounds on eigenvalues and eigenvalue means which are sharp in the semiclassical limit. We give examples in horn-shaped regions and so-called spiny urchins. Some results are extended to Schr\"odinger operators defined on quasi-bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Geometrical Versions of improved Berezin-Li-Yau Inequalities

We study the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplace operator on an arbitrary bounded, open set in $\R^d$, $d \geq 2$. In particular, we derive upper bounds on Riesz means of order $σ\geq 3/2$, that improve the sharp Berezin inequality by a negative second term. This remainder term depends on geometric properties of the boundary of the set and reflects the correct order of growth in the semi-classical limit. Under certain geometric conditions these results imply new lower bounds on individual eigenvalues, which improve the Li-Yau inequality.

Universal Bounds for Traces of the Dirichlet Laplace Operator

We derive upper bounds for the trace of the heat kernel $Z(t)$ of the Dirichlet Laplace operator in an open set $Ω\subset \R^d$, $d \geq 2$. In domains of finite volume the result improves an inequality of Kac. Using the same methods we give bounds on $Z(t)$ in domains of infinite volume. For domains of finite volume the bound on $Z(t)$ decays exponentially as $t$ tends to infinity and it contains the sharp first term and a correction term reflecting the properties of the short time asymptotics of $Z(t)$. To prove the result we employ refined Berezin-Li-Yau inequalities for eigenvalue means.

Improved Berezin-Li-Yau inequalities with a remainder term

We give an improvement of sharp Berezin type bounds on the Riesz means $\sum_k(Λ-λ_k)_+^σ$ of the eigenvalues $λ_k$ of the Dirichlet Laplacian in a domain if $σ\geq 3/2$. It contains a correction term of the order of the standard second term in the Weyl asymptotics. The result is based on an application of sharp Lieb-Thirring inequalities with operator valued potential to spectral estimates of the Dirichlet Laplacian in domains.

Polya's conjecture in the presence of a constant magnetic field

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian with a constant magnetic field in a two-dimensional domain of finite measure. We determine the sharp constants in semi-classical eigenvalue estimates and show, in particular, that Polya's conjecture is not true in the presence of a magnetic field.

Lieb-Thirring inequalities for geometrically induced bound states

We prove new inequalities of the Lieb-Thirring type on the eigenvalues of Schr\"odinger operators in wave guides with local perturbations. The estimates are optimal in the weak-coupling case. To illustrate their applications, we consider, in particular, a straight strip and a straight circular tube with either mixed boundary conditions or boundary deformations.
