Free group representations from vector-valued multiplicative functions, III

Let $\pi$ be an irreducible unitary representation of a finitely generated nonabelian free group $\Gamma$; suppose $\pi$ is weakly contained in the regular representation. In 2001 the first and third authors conjectured that such a representation must be either odd or monotonous or duplicitous. In 2004 they introduced the class of multiplicative representations: this is a large class of representations obtained by looking at the action of $\Gamma$ on its Cayley graph. In the second paper of this series we showed that some of the multiplicative representations were monotonous. Here we show that all the other multiplicative representations are either odd or duplicitous. The conjecture is therefore established for multiplicative representations.

Littlewood-Paley theory for triangle buildings

For the natural two parameter filtration $(\mathcal{F}_\lambda : \lambda \in P)$ on the boundary of a triangle building we define a maximal function and a square function and show their boundedness on $L^p(\Omega_0)$ for $p \in (1, \infty)$. At the end we consider $L^p(\Omega_0)$ boundedness of martingale transforms. If the building is of $\text{GL}(3, \mathbb{Q}_p)$ then $\Omega_0$ can be identified with $p$-adic Heisenberg group.

Finding generators and relations for groups acting on the hyperbolic ball

In order to enumerate the fake projective planes, as announced in~\cite{CS}, we found explicit generators and a presentation for each maximal arithmetic subgroup $\bar\Gamma$ of~$PU(2,1)$ for which the (appropriately normalized) covolume equals~$1/N$ for some integer~$N\ge1$. Prasad and Yeung \cite{PY1,PY2} had given a list of all such $\bar\Gamma$ (up to equivalence). The generators were found by a computer search which uses the natural action of $PU(2,1)$ on the unit ball $B(\C^2)$ in~$\C^2$. Our main results here give criteria which ensure that the computer search has found sufficiently many elements of~$\bar\Gamma$ to generate $\bar\Gamma$, and describes a family of relations amongst the generating set sufficient to give a presentation of~$\bar\Gamma$. We give an example illustrating details of how this was done in the case of a particular~$\bar\Gamma$ (for which $N=864$). While there are no fake projective planes in this case, we exhibit a torsion-free subgroup~$\Pi$ of index~$N$ in~$\bar\Gamma$, and give some properties of the surface~$\Pi\backslash B(\C^2)$.

Free Group Representations from Vector-Valued Multiplicative Functions, II

Let $\Gamma$ be a non-commutative free group on finitely many generators. In a previous work two of the authors have constructed the class of multiplicative representations of $\Gamma$ and proved them irreducible as representation of $\Gamma\ltimes_\lambda C(\Omega)$. In this paper we analyze multiplicative representations as representations of $\Gamma$ and we prove a criterium for irreducibility based on the growth of their matrix coefficients.

$C^*$--algebras arising from group actions on the boundary of a triangle building

A subgroup of an amenable group is amenable. The $C^*$-algebra version of this fact is false. This was first proved by M.-D. Choi who proved that the non-nuclear $C^*$-algebra $C^*_r(\ZZ_2*\ZZ_3)$ is a subalgebra of the nuclear Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_2$. A. Connes provided another example, based on a crossed product construction. More recently J. Spielberg [23] showed that these examples were essentially the same. In fact he proved that certain of the $C^*$-algebras studied by J. Cuntz and W. Krieger [10] can be constructed naturally as crossed product algebras. For example if the group $\Gamma$ acts simply transitively on a homogeneous tree of finite degree with boundary $\Omega$ then $\cross$ is a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. Such trees may be regarded as affine buildings of type $\widetilde A_1$. The present paper is devoted to the study of the analogous situation where a group $\G$ acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building of type $\widetilde A_2$ with boundary $\O$. The corresponding crossed product algebra $\cross$ is then generated by two Cuntz-Krieger algebras. Moreover we show that $\cross$ is simple and nuclear. This is a consequence of the facts that the action of $\G$ on $\O$ is minimal, topologically free, and amenable.

Maximal abelian subalgebras of the group factor of an $\widetilde A_2$ group

An $\widetilde A_2$ group $\Gamma$ acts simply transitively on the vertices of an affine building $\triangle$. We study certain subgroups $\Gamma_0 \cong {\Bbb Z}^2$ which act on certain apartments of $\triangle$. If one of these subgroups acts simply transitively on an apartment, then the corresponding subalgebra of the group von Neumann algebra is maximal abelian and singular. Moreover the Puk\'anszky invariant contains a type $I_{\infty}$ summand.

Irreducible subshifts associated with $\tilde A_2$ buildings

Let $\Gamma$ be a group of type rotating automorphisms of a building $\cB$ of type $\widetilde A_2$, and suppose that $\Gamma$ acts freely and transitively on the vertex set of $\cB$. The apartments of $\cB$ are tiled by triangles, labelled according to $\Gamma$-orbits. Associated with these tilings there is a natural subshift of finite type, which is shown to be irreducible. The key element in the proof is a combinatorial result about finite projective planes.

Affine buildings, tiling systems and higher rank Cuntz-Krieger algebras

To an $r$-dimensional subshift of finite type satisfying certain special properties we associate a $C^*$-algebra $\cA$. This algebra is a higher rank version of a Cuntz-Krieger algebra. In particular, it is simple, purely infinite and nuclear. We study an example: if $\G$ is a group acting freely on the vertices of an $\wt A_2$ building, with finitely many orbits, and if $\Omega$ is the boundary of that building, then $C(\Om)\rtimes \G$ is the algebra associated to a certain two dimensional subshift.

A Haagerup Inequality for $\tA_1\times\tA_1$ and $\tA_2$ Buildings

Haagerup's inequality for convolvers on free groups may be interpreted as a result on $\tA_1$ buildings, i.e. trees. Here are proved analogous inequalities for discrete groups acting freely on the vertices of $\tA_1\times\tA_1$ and $\tA_2$ buildings. The results apply in particular to groups of type-rotating automorphisms acting simply transitively on the vertices of such buildings. These results provide the first examples of higher rank groups with property (RD).

Stability properties of multiplicative representations of free groups

We extend the construction of multiplicative representations for a free group G introduced by Kuhn and Steger (Isr. J., (144) 2004) in such a way that the new class Mult(G) so defined is stable under taking the finite direct sum, under changes of generators (and hence is Aut(G)-invariant), under restriction to and induction from a subgroup of finite index. The main tool is the detailed study of the properties of the action of a free group on its Cayley graph with respect to a change of generators, as well as the relative properties of the action of a subgroup of finite index after the choice of a "nice" fundamental domain. These stability properties of Mult(G) are essential in the construction of a new class of representations for a virtually free group (Iozzi-Kuhn-Steger, arXiv:1112.4709v1)

A new family of representatiosnof virtually free groups

We construct a new family of irreducible unitary representations of a finitely generated virtually free group L. We prove furthermore a general result concerning representations of Gromov hyperbolic groups that are weakly contained in the regular representation, thus implying that all the representations in this family can be realized on the boundary of L. As a corollary, we obtain an analogue of Herz majorization principle.

Malnormal subgroups of lattices and the Pukanszky invariant in group factors

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group. Assume that $G(\bb R)$ has no compact factors and let $\Gamma$ be a torsion-free uniform lattice subgroup of $G(\bb R)$. Then $\Gamma$ contains a malnormal abelian subgroup $A$. This implies that the $\tto$ factor $\vn(\Gamma)$ contains a masa $\fk A$ with Puk\'anszky invariant $\{\infty\}$.

Asymptotic K-theory for groups acting on $\tildeA_2$ buildings

Let $\Gamma$ be a torsion free lattice in $G=\PGL(3,{{\mathbb F}})$ where ${{\mathbb F}}$ is a nonarchimedean local field. Then $\Gamma$ acts freely on the affine Bruhat-Tits building ${\mathcal B}$ of $G$ and there is an induced action on the boundary $\Omega$ of ${\mathcal B}$. The crossed product $C^*$-algebra ${\mathcal A}(\Gamma)=C(\Omega) \rtimes \Gamma$ depends only on $\Gamma$ and is classified by its K-theory. This article shows how to compute the K-theory of ${\mathcal A}(\Gamma)$ and of the larger class of rank two Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
