Codimension and Projective Dimension up to Symmetry

Symmetric ideals in increasingly larger polynomial rings that form an ascending chain are investigated. We focus on the asymptotic behavior of codimensions and projective dimensions of ideals in such a chain. If the ideals are graded it is known that the codimensions grow eventually linearly. Here this result is extended to chains of arbitrary symmetric ideals. Moreover, the slope of the linear function is explicitly determined. We conjecture that the projective dimensions also grow eventually linearly. As part of the evidence we establish two non-trivial lower linear bounds of the projective dimensions for chains of monomial ideals. As an application, this yields Cohen-Macaulayness obstructions.

Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity up to symmetry

We study the asymptotic behavior of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity along chains of graded ideals in increasingly larger polynomial rings that are invariant under the action of symmetric groups. A linear upper bound for the regularity of such ideals is established. We conjecture that their regularity grows eventually precisely linearly. We establish this conjecture in several cases, most notably when the ideals are Artinian or squarefree monomial.

Retracts and algebraic properties of cut algebras

We study cut algebras which are toric rings associated to graphs. The key idea is to consider suitable retracts to understand algebraic properties and invariants of such algebras like being a complete intersection, having a linear resolution, or the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Throughout the paper, we discuss several examples and pose some problems as well.

Equivariant Hilbert Series in non-Noetherian Polynomial Rings

We introduce and study equivariant Hilbert series of ideals in polynomial rings in countably many variables that are invariant under a suitable action of a symmetric group or the monoid $Inc(\mathbb{N})$ of strictly increasing functions. Our first main result states that these series are rational functions in two variables. A key is to introduce also suitable submonoids of $Inc(\mathbb{N})$ and to compare invariant filtrations induced by their actions. Extending a result by Hillar and Sullivant, we show that any ideal that is invariant under these submonoids admits a Gr\"obner basis consisting of finitely many orbits. As our second main result we prove that the Krull dimension and multiplicity of ideals in an invariant filtration grow eventually linearly and exponentially, respectively, and we determine the terms that dominate this growth.

A multivariate generalization of Prony's method

Prony's method is a prototypical eigenvalue analysis based method for the reconstruction of a finitely supported complex measure on the unit circle from its moments up to a certain degree. In this note, we give a generalization of this method to the multivariate case and prove simple conditions under which the problem admits a unique solution. Provided the order of the moments is bounded from below by the number of points on which the measure is supported as well as by a small constant divided by the separation distance of these points, stable reconstruction is guaranteed. In its simplest form, the reconstruction method consists of setting up a certain multilevel Toeplitz matrix of the moments, compute a basis of its kernel, and compute by some method of choice the set of common roots of the multivariate polynomials whose coefficients are given in the second step. All theoretical results are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Broken circuit complexes and hyperplane arrangements

We study Stanley-Reisner ideals of broken circuits complexes and characterize those ones admitting a linear resolution or being complete intersections. These results will then be used to characterize arrangements whose Orlik-Terao ideal has the same properties. As an application, we improve a result of Wilf on upper bounds for the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial of a maximal planar graph. We also show that for an ordered matroid with disjoint minimal broken circuits, the supersolvability of the matroid is equivalent to the Koszulness of its Orlik-Solomon algebra.

Criteria for componentwise linearity

We establish characteristic-free criteria for the componentwise linearity of graded ideals. As applications, we classify the componentwise linear ideals among the Gorenstein ideals, the standard determinantal ideals, and the ideals generated by the submaximal minors of a symmetric matrix.

Algebraic Properties of Generic Tropical Varieties

We show that the algebraic invariants multiplicity and depth of a graded ideal in the polynomial ring are closely connected to the fan structure of its generic tropical variety in the constant coefficient case. Generically the multiplicity of the ideal is shown to correspond directly to a natural definition of multiplicity of cones of tropical varieties. Moreover, we can recover information on the depth of the ideal from the fan structure of the generic tropical variety if the depth is known to be greater than 0. In particular, in this case we can see if the ideal is Cohen-Macaulay or almost-Cohen-Macaulay from its generic tropical variety.

Generic Tropical Varieties

We show that in the constant coefficient case the generic tropical variety of a graded ideal exists. This can be seen as the analogon to the existence of the generic initial ideal in Groebner basis theory. We determine the generic tropical variety as a set in general and as a fan for principal ideals and linear ideals.

Koszul homology and syzygies of Veronese subalgebras

A graded K-algebra R has property N_p if it is generated in degree 1, has relations in degree 2 and the syzygies of order less or equal to p on the relations are linear. The Green-Lazarsfeld index of R is the largest p such that it satisfies the property N_p. Our main results assert that (under a mild assumption on the base field K) the c-th Veronese subring of a polynomial ring has Green-Lazarsfeld index greater or equal to c+1. The same conclusion also holds for an arbitrary standard graded algebra, provided c is sufficiently large.

Linearity defects of modules over commutative rings

This article concerns linear parts of minimal resolutions of finitely generated modules over commutative local, or graded rings. The focus is on the linearity defect of a module, which marks the point after which the linear part of its minimal resolution is acyclic. The results established track the change in this invariant under some standard operations in commutative algebra. As one of the applications, it is proved that a local ring is Koszul if and only if it admits a Koszul module that is Cohen-Macaulay of minimal degree. An injective analogue of the linearity defect is introduced and studied. The main results express this new invariant in terms of linearity defects of free resolutions, and relate it to other ring theoretic and homological invariants of the module.

Homological properties of Orlik-Solomon algebras

The Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid can be considered as a quotient ring over the exterior algebra E. At first we study homological properties of E-modules as e.g. complexity, depth and regularity. In particular, we consider modules with linear injective resolutions. We apply our results to Orlik-Solomon algebras of matroids and give formulas for the complexity, depth and regularity of such rings in terms of invariants of the matroid. Moreover, we characterize those matroids whose Orlik-Solomon ideal has a linear projective resolution and compute in these cases the Betti numbers of the ideal.

Gr\"obner bases and Betti numbers of monoidal complexes

In this note we consider monoidal complexes and their associated algebras, called toric face rings. These rings generalize Stanley-Reisner rings and affine monoid algebras. We compute initial ideals of the presentation ideal of a toric face ring, and determine its graded Betti numbers. Our results generalize celebrated theorems of Hochster in combinatorial commutative algebra.

Generic initial ideals and fibre products

We study the behavior of generic initial ideals with respect to fibre products. In our main result we determine the generic initial ideal of the fibre product with respect to the reverse lexicographic order. As an application we compute the symmetric algebraic shifted complex of two disjoint simplicial complexes as was conjectured by Kalai. This result is the symmetric analogue of a theorem of Nevo who determined the exterior algebraic shifted complex of two disjoint simplicial complexes as predicted by Kalai.

Glicci simplicial complexes

One of the main open questions in liaison theory is whether every homogeneous Cohen-Macaulay ideal in a polynomial ring is glicci, i.e. if it is in the G-liaison class of a complete intersection. We give an affirmative answer to this question for Stanley-Reisner ideals defined by simplicial complexes that are weakly vertex-decomposable. This class of complexes includes matroid, shifted and Gorenstein complexes respectively. Moreover, we construct a simplicial complex which shows that the property of being glicci depends on the characteristic of the base field. As an application of our methods we establish new evidence for two conjectures of Stanley on partitionable complexes and on Stanley decompositions.

Algebraic shifting and exterior and symmetric algebra methods

We establish results about algebraic shifting of simplicial complexes and use them to compare different shifting operations. In particular, we show that each shifting operation does not decrease the number of facets, and that the exterior shift is the best among the exterior shifting operations in the sense that it increases the number of facets the least. Methods of proof include Gröbner basis theory over the exterior algebra, Cartan homology, degree functions, and Alexander duality.

Betti numbers and shifts in minimal graded free resolutions

Let S be a polynomial ring and R=S/I where I is a graded ideal of S. The Multiplicity Conjecture of Herzog, Huneke, and Srinivasan which was recently proved using the Boij-Soederberg theory states that the multiplicity of R is bounded above by a function of the maximal shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R over S as well as bounded below by a function of the minimal shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. In this paper we study the related problem to show that the total Betti-numbers of R are also bounded above by a function of the shifts in the minimal graded free resolution of R as well as bounded below by another function of the shifts if R is Cohen-Macaulay. We also discuss the cases when these bounds are sharp.

On canonical modules of toric face rings

Generalizing the concepts of Stanley-Reisner and affine monoid algebras, one can associate to a rational pointed fan the toric face ring. Assuming that this ring is Cohen-Macaulay, the main result of this paper is to characterize the situation when its canonical module is isomorphic to a fine graded ideal of the toric face ring. From this result several algebraic and combinatorial consequences are deduced in the situations where the fan may be related to a manifold with non-empty boundary, or the fan is a shellable fan.
