Optimal Design of Tubular Perfectly Conducting Objects in Electromagnetic Chirality

This work is about the shape optimization of long tubular objects in electromagnetic chirality (em-chirality). Em-chirality is a property of individual scattering objects or metamaterials describing their qualitatively different response to electromagnetic waves of opposite polarization handedness. The optimization is performed by a Newton-type iterative maximization of a regularized em-chirality measure with respect to the scatterer's shape. In this context, the differentiability of the object-to-far field operator map is analyzed rigorously, thereby extending previously known results on the domain derivative to the far field operator setting. Our optimal design algorithm is based on the electric field integral equation, which is employed both for the evaluation of scattered fields and for the computation of the domain derivative. Our implementation is done via the boundary element method. The numerical examples presented in this work yield strongly em-chiral scattering objects capable of exciting higher-order modes beyond the dipole regime with nonintuitive shapes that expand the known set of highly em-chiral scattering objects.

A nonuniform mesh method for wave scattered by periodic surfaces

In this paper, we propose a new nonuniform mesh method to simulate acoustic scattering problems in two dimensional periodic structures with non-periodic incident fields numerically. As existing methods are difficult to extend to higher dimensions, we have designed the new method with such extensions in mind. With the help of the Floquet-Bloch transform, the solution to the original scattering problem is written as an integral of a family of quasi-periodic problems. These are defined in bounded domains for each value of the Floquet parameter which varies in a bounded interval. The key step in our method is the numerical approximation of the integral by a quadrature rule adapted to the regularity of the family of quasi-periodic solutions. We design a nonuniform mesh with a Gaussian quadrature rule applied on each subinterval. We prove that the numerical method converges exponentially with respect to both the number of subintervals and the number of Gaussian quadrature points. Some numerical experiments are provided to illustrate the results.

Inverse electromagnetic obstacle scattering problems with multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data

This paper is dedicated to design a direct sampling method of inverse electromagnetic scattering problems, which uses multi-frequency sparse backscattering far field data for reconstructing the boundary of perfectly conducting obstacles. We show that a smallest strip containing the unknown object can be approximately determined by the multi-frequency backscattering far field data at two opposite observation directions. The proof is based on the Kirchhoff approximation and Fourier transform. Such a strip is then reconstructed by an indicator, which is the absolute value of an integral of the product of the data and some properly chosen function over the frequency interval. With the increase of the number of the backscattering data, the location and shape of the underlying object can be reconstructed. Numerical examples are conducted to show the validity and robustness of the proposed sampling method. The numerical examples also show that the concave part of the underlying object can be well reconstructed, and the different connected components of the underlying object can be well separated.
