The spaces of K\"ahler and holomorphically tamed symplectic forms on closed 4-manifolds

This paper investigates the uniqueness, connectedness and openness properties of spaces of K\"ahler forms on closed $4$-manifolds, extending discussions in \cite{Li08,Sal13}. Motivated by the Streets--Tian conjecture concerning the existence of K\"ahler metrics on Hermitian-symplectic complex manifolds, we also study holomorphically tamed symplectic forms, which are symplectic forms tamed by some integrable complex structure. We formulate a parallel question and relate it to the corresponding questions for K\"ahler-type symplectic forms.

Symplectic log Kodaira dimension $-\infty$, Hirzebruch--Jung strings and weighted projective planes

We study symplectic minimal resolutions of weighted projective planes $\mathbb{CP}(a,b,c)$ from the perspective of disconnected symplectic divisors with symplectic log Kodaira dimension $-\infty$. Building on the techniques developed in our previous work for connected divisors, we introduce the notion of exceptional gaps between distinct connected components of the divisor and use it to establish a Torelli-type theorem for certain configurations of three Hirzebruch--Jung strings. Motivated by Daigle--Russell's study of affine rulings on complete normal rational surfaces in algebraic context, we also establish a weighted version of Gromov--McDuff's characterization of symplectic $\mathbb{CP}^2$ by showing the existence of symplectic affine rulings implies certain divisor configuration to arise from the minimal resolution of $\mathbb{CP}(a,b,c)$.

Symplectic Classes on Elliptic Surfaces with positive Euler Number

A key question for $4$-manifolds $M$ admitting symplectic structures is to determine which cohomology classes $\alpha\in H^2(M,\mathbb R)$ admit a symplectic representative. The collection of all such classes, the symplectic cone $\mathcal C_M$, is a basic smooth invariant of $M$. This paper describes the symplectic cone for elliptic surfaces with positive Euler number.

Symplectic log Kodaira dimension $-\infty$, affine-ruledness and unicuspidal rational curves

Given a closed symplectic $4$-manifold $(X,\omega)$, a collection $D$ of embedded symplectic submanifolds satisfying certain normal crossing conditions is called a symplectic divisor. In this paper, we consider the pair $(X,\omega,D)$ with symplectic log Kodaira dimension $-\infty$ in the spirit of Li-Zhang. We introduce the notion of symplectic affine-ruledness, which characterizes the divisor complement $X\setminus D$ as being foliated by symplectic punctured spheres. We establish a symplectic analogue of a theorem by Fujita-Miyanishi-Sugie-Russell in the algebraic settings which describes smooth open algebraic surfaces with $\overline{\kappa}=-\infty$ as containing a Zariski open subset isomorphic to the product between a curve and the affine line. When $X$ is a rational manifold, the foliation is given by certain unicuspidal rational curves of index one with cusp singularities located at the intersection point in $D$. We utilize the correspondence between such singular curves and embedded curves in its normal crossing resolution recently highlighted by McDuff-Siegel, and also a criterion for the existence of embedded curves in the relative settings by McDuff-Opshtein. Another main technical input is Zhang's curve cone theorem for tamed almost complex $4$-manifolds, which is crucial in reducing the complexity of divisors. We also investigate the symplectic deformation properties of divisors and show that such pairs are deformation equivalent to K\"ahler pairs. As a corollary, the restriction of the symplectic structure $\omega$ on an open dense subset in the divisor complement $X\setminus D$ is deformation equivalent to the standard product symplectic structure.

Algebraic capacities as tropical polynomials over the reduced $c_1$-positive symplectic cone

In a series of work [Wor22], [Wor21] and [CW20], algebraic capacities were introduced in an algebraic manner for polarized algebraic surfaces and applied to the symplectic embedding problems. In this paper, we give a reformulation of algebraic capacities in terms of only a tamed pair of symplectic form and almost complex structure. We show that they actually only depend on the cohomology class of the symplectic form for a rational manifold. Since it is not known that any symplectic form on a rational manifold is K\"{a}hler, this novel formulation potentially is more general on a rational manifold. Additionally, for manifolds with $b^+=1$, we derive asymptotic results that are parallel to the context of ECH(Embedded Contact Homology) and algebraic settings. When assuming $c_1\cdot [\omega]>0$ on rational manifolds, we further introduce a sequence of tropical polynomials which will succinctly describe those capacities viewed as functions over the domain parametrizing such symplectic forms. As an application, we give a purely symplectic proof of the correspondence between algebraic capacities and ECH capacities for smooth toric surfaces.

Almost toric presentations of symplectic log Calabi-Yau pairs

It is known that the union of fibers over elliptic singularities of an almost toric fibered (ATF) closed symplectic four-manifold forms a symplectic log Calabi-Yau (LCY) divisor. In this paper, we show the converse: any symplectic LCY divisor can be realized as the boundary divisor of an ATF. For divisors in elliptic ruled surfaces, this realization occurs over the M\"obius strip; for divisors in rational surfaces, the realization occurs over the disk and becomes canonical once we choose an additional datum, called the framing, on the space of LCYs in rational surfaces. The construction for rational surfaces is achieved by considering the symplectic analogue of the toric model used in algebraic geometry, which motivates the introduction of a new combinatorial object that we call the bitten Delzant polygon.

Symplectic Torelli groups of rational surfaces

We call a symplectic rational surface $(X,\omega)$ \textit{positive} if $c_1(X)\cdot[\omega]>0$. The positivity condition of a rational surface is equivalent to the existence of a divisor $D\subset X$, such that $(X, D)$ is a log Calabi-Yau surface. The cohomology class of a symplectic form can be endowed with a \textit{type} using the root system associated to its Lagrangian spherical classes. In this paper, we prove that the symplectic Torelli group of a positive rational surface is trivial if it is of type $\mathbb{A}$, and is a sphere braid group if it is of type $\mathbb{D}$. As an application, we answer affirmatively a long-term open question that Lagrangian spherical Dehn twists generate the symplectic Torelli group $Symp_h(X)$ when $X$ is a positive rational surface. We also prove that all symplectic toric surfaces have trivial symplectic Torelli groups. Lastly, we verify that Chiang-Kessler's symplectic involution is Hamiltonian, answering a question of Kedra positively. Our key new input is the recent study of almost complex subvarieties due to Li-Zhang and Zhang. Inspired by these works, we define a new \textit{coarse stratification} for the almost complex structures for positive rational surfaces. We also combined symplectic field theory and the parametrized Gromov-Witten theories for our applications.

Enumerative aspect of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors and almost toric fibrations

In this paper we are interested in the isotopy classes of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a fixed symplectic rational surface. We give several equivalent definitions and prove the stability, finiteness and rigidity results. Motivated by the problem of counting toric actions, we obtain a general counting formula of symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors in a restrictive region of $c_1$-nef cone. A detailed count in the case of 2- and 3-point blow-ups of complex projective space for all symplectic forms is also given. In our framework the complexity of the combinatorics of analyzing Delzant polygons is reduced to the arrangement of homology classes. Then we study its relation with almost toric fibrations. We raise the problem of realizing all symplectic log Calabi-Yau divisors by some almost toric fibrations and verify it together with another conjecture of Symington in a special region.

Classical, semi-classical and quantum optical models for x-ray planar cavity with electronic resonance

Here two theoretical models of semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function are developed for the system of x-ray thin-film planar cavity with inner-shell electronic resonances. The semi-classical model is based on the matrix formalism to treat each layer as the propagating matrix. The crucial idea is to expand the propagating matrix of the resonant atomic layer under ultrathin-film approximation, then derive the analytical expression of the spectral observation, i.e, the cavity reflectance. The typical cavity effects of cavity enhanced decay rate, cavity induced energy shift and the Fano interference which were observed in the recent experiments could be phenomenologically interpreted. The second quantum model employs the analytical Green's function to solve the cavity system. The system Hamiltonian and the effective energy-level are derived. The effective energy-level scheme indicates that the cavity effect acts on the regulation of the intermediated core-hole state. To test the validity of the semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function models, the classical Parratt's formalism and the dispersion correction of the atomic refractive index are also recalled. Very good agreements in reflectivity spectra between semi-classical and quantum models with the Parratt's results are observed. The present semi-classical matrix and quantum Green's function models will be useful to predict the new phenomena and optimize the cavity structures for future experiments and promote the emerging of quantum optical effects with modern x-ray spectroscopy techniques.

Probing dissipation process via Fano resonance and collective effect in the X-ray cavity

In the absence of time-reversal symmetry, the asymmetric parameter q of the Fano resonance is extended into the complex space, where its trajectory can be utilized to investigate the decoherence process. By embedding the ensemble of M$\ddot{\rm{o}}$ssbauer nuclei in the thin-film planar cavity in this work, the trajectories of asymmetric parameter q are studied via the collective effect of the nuclear ensemble, which is regulated by the nuclear abundance and angle offset. Due to the diverse controllable methods of the collective resonant strength, there are different straight lines and arc-shape trajectories in the complex plane, in which the slopes and the radius can be respectively adjusted by the angle offset and nuclear abundance. It is demonstrated that the dissipation process can be suppressed equivalently by the strong energy exchange between the cavity and nuclear ensemble. The present results could enrich the behaviors of the asymmetric parameter q in the complex plane and would provide new possibility for the decoherence research through the thin-film planar cavity.

Controlling core-hole lifetime through an x-ray planar cavity

It has long been believed that core-hole lifetime (CHL) of an atom is an intrinsic physical property, and controlling it is significant yet is very hard. Here, CHL of the 2p state of W atom is manipulated experimentally through adjusting the emission rate of a resonant fluorescence channel with the assistance of an x-ray thin-film planar cavity. The emission rate is accelerated by a factor linearly proportional to the cavity field amplitude, that can be directly controlled by choosing different cavity modes or changing the angle offset in experiment. This experimental observation is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. It is found that the manipulated resonant fluorescence channel even can dominate the CHL. The controllable CHL realized here will facilitate the nonlinear investigations and modern x-ray scattering techniques in hard x-ray region.

Local geometry of symplectic divisors with applications to contact torus bundles

In this note we study the contact geometry of symplectic divisors. We show the contact structure induced on the boundary of a divisor neighborhood is invariant under toric and interior blow-ups and blow-downs. We also construct an open book decomposition on the boundary of a concave divisor neighborhood and apply it to the study of universally tight contact structures of contact torus bundles.

Circular spherical divisors and their contact topology

This paper investigates the symplectic and contact topology associated to circular spherical divisors. We classify, up to toric equivalence, all concave circular spherical divisors $ D $ that can be embedded symplectically into a closed symplectic 4-manifold and show they are all realized as symplectic log Calabi-Yau pairs if their complements are minimal. We then determine the Stein fillability and rational homology type of all minimal symplectic fillings for the boundary torus bundles of such $D$. When $ D $ is anticanonical and convex, we give explicit betti number bounds for Stein fillings of its boundary contact torus bundle.

Symplectic $(-2)$-spheres and the symplectomorphism group of small rational 4-manifolds, II

For $(\mathbb{C} P^2 \# 5{\overline {\mathbb{C} P^2}},\omega)$, let $N_{\omega}$ be the number of $(-2)$-symplectic spherical homology classes. We completely determine the Torelli symplectic mapping class group (Torelli SMCG): the Torelli SMCG is trivial if $N_{\omega}>8$; it is $\pi_0(Diff^+(S^2,5))$ if $N_{\omega}=0$ (by Paul Seidel and Jonathan Evans); it is $\pi_0(Diff^+(S^2,4))$ in the remaining case. Further, we completely determine the rank of $\pi_1(Symp(\mathbb{C} P^2 \# 5{\overline {\mathbb{C} P^2}}, \omega)$ for any given symplectic form. Our results can be uniformly presented regarding Dynkin diagrams of type $\mathbb{A}$ and type $\mathbb{D}$ Lie algebras. We also provide a solution to the smooth isotopy problem of rational $4$-manifolds.

Stability of the symplectomorphism group of rational surfaces

We apply Zhang's almost K\"ahler Nakai-Moishezon theorem and Li-Zhang's comparison of $J$-symplectic cones to establish a stability result for the symplectomorphism group of a rational $4$-manifold $M$ with Euler number up to $12$. As a corollary, we also derive a stability result for the space of embedded symplectic balls in $M$. A noteworthy feature of our approach is that we systematically explore various spaces and groups associated to a symplectic cohomology class $u$ rather than with a single symplectic form $\omega$. To this end, we prove a weaker version of the tamed $J$-inflation procedures of D. McDuff and O. Buse that fixes a gap in their original formulations.

Geometric automorphism groups of symplectic 4-manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed, oriented, smooth $4-$manifold with intersection form $\Gamma$, $A(\Gamma)$ the automorphism group of $\Gamma$ and $D(M)$ the subgroup induced by orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $M$. In this note we study the question when $D(M)$ is of infinite index in $A(\Gamma)$ for a symplectic 4-manifold.
