Correlated local dipoles in PbTe

We present a combined single-crystal x-ray diffuse scattering and ab-initio molecular dynamics study of lead telluride, PbTe. Well-known for its thermoelectric and narrow-gap semiconducting properties, PbTe recently achieved further notoriety following the report of an unusual off-centering of the lead atoms, accompanied by a local symmetry breaking, on heating. This observation, which was named emphanisis, ignited considerable controversy regarding the details of the underlying local structure and the appropriate interpretation of the total scattering experiments. In this study, we demonstrate close agreement between our diffuse scattering measurements and our calculations, which allows us to analyze features such as higher-order correlations that are accessible in the simulations but not experimentally. This allowed us to discover an unusual correlated local dipole formation extending over several unit cells with an associated local reduction of the cubic symmetry in both our x-ray diffuse scattering measurements and our molecular dynamics simulations. Importantly, when averaged spatially or temporally, the most probable positions for the ions are at the centers of their coordination polyhedra. Our results therefore clarify the nature of the local symmetry breaking, and reveal the source of the earlier controversy regarding the existence or absence of off-centering. Finally, we provide an interpretation of the behavior in terms of coupled soft optical and acoustic modes, which is linked also to the high thermoelectric performance of PbTe.

Twist star products and Morita equivalence

We present a simple no-go theorem for the existence of a deformation quantization of a homogeneous space M induced by a Drinfel'd twist: we argue that equivariant line bundles on M with non-trivial Chern class and symplectic twist star products cannot both exist on the same manifold M. This implies, for example, that there is no symplectic star product on the complex projective spaces induced by a twist based on U(gl(n,C))[[h]] or any sub-bialgebra, for every n greater or equal than 2.

Star Products that can not be induced by Drinfel'd Twists

This is the final version of my master thesis. I prove that there are no twist star products on the 2-sphere and on the higher genus pretzel surfaces deforming a symplectic structure. One of the key arguments is that a connected compact symplectic manifold endowed with a twist star product has to be a homogeneous space. Furthermore, there is a non-degenerate r-matrix on a Lie algebra whose Lie group is acting transitively and effectively on the manifold in this case. I recap the theory of homogeneous spaces, in particular the classification of transitive effective actions on the 2-sphere, and discuss the notion of r-matrices and Drinfel'd twists. Some results of this thesis are available as a preprint with Pierre Bieliavsky, Chiara Esposito and Stefan Waldmann on arxiv.org under the title "Obstructions for Twist Star Products".

Obstructions for Twist Star Products

In this short note we point out that not every star product is induced by a Drinfel'd twist by showing that not every Poisson structure is induced by a classical $r$-matrix. Examples include the higher genus symplectic Pretzel surfaces and the symplectic sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$.

Simultaneous maximum-likelihood reconstruction for x-ray grating based phase-contrast tomography avoiding intermediate phase retrieval

Phase-wrapping artifacts, statistical image noise and the need for a minimum amount of phase steps per projection limit the practicability of x-ray grating based phase-contrast tomography, when using filtered back projection reconstruction. For conventional x-ray computed tomography, the use of statistical iterative reconstruction algorithms has successfully reduced artifacts and statistical issues. In this work, an iterative reconstruction method for grating based phase-contrast tomography is presented. The method avoids the intermediate retrieval of absorption, differential phase and dark field projections. It directly reconstructs tomographic cross sections from phase stepping projections by the use of a forward projecting imaging model and an appropriate likelihood function. The likelihood function is then maximized with an iterative algorithm. The presented method is tested with tomographic data obtained through a wave field simulation of grating based phase-contrast tomography. The reconstruction results are in agreement with the expectations and proof the validity of the concept.

Investigation of the signature of lung tissue in X-ray grating-based phase-contrast imaging

Purpose: Grating-based X-ray phase-contrast imaging is a promising modality increasing the soft tissue contrast in medical imaging. In this work, the signature of lung tissue in X-ray grating-based physe-contrast imaging is investigated. Methods: We used a Talbot-Lau interferometer for our investigations of two C57BL/6 mice. Both underwent projection imaging and computed tomography. Results: The results show that the three images obtained by X-ray phase-contrast imaging show complementary anatomical structures. Especially the dark field image allows a more-exact determination of the position of the lung in the chest cavity. Conclusion: Due to its sensitivity to granular structures, the dark field image may be used for the diagnosis of lung diseases in earlier stages or without a CT scan. Furthermore, X-ray phase-contrast imaging may also have great potential in the application of animal laboratory sciences to reduce the number of required animals used in long-term translational, toxicity, and regenerative medicine studies.

Crystal growth of copper-rich ytterbium compounds: The predicted giant unit cell structures YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25

Two new phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are found as a result of careful phase diagram investigations. Between the congruent and peritectic formation of YbCu4.5 and YbCu3.5, respectively, the phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are formed peritectically at 934(2)degC and 931(3)degC. Crystal growth was realised using a Bridgman technique and single crystalline grains of about 50-100 10^{-6}m were analyzed by electron diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Due to the only slight differences in both compositions and formation temperatures the growth of larger single crystals of a defined superstructure is challenging. The compounds YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 fit in Cerny`s (J. Solid State Chem. 174 (2003) 125) building principle {(RECu5)n(RECu2)} where RE = Yb with n = 4 and 3. YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 base on AuBe5/MgCu2-type substructures and contain approximately 4570 and 2780 atoms per unit cell. The new phases close the gap in the series of known copper-rich rare earth compounds for n = 1, 2 (DyCu3.5, DyCu4.0) and n = 5 (YbCu4.5, DyCu4.5).
