The radial derivative on the graded M\"obius algebra

Let $M$ be a simple matroid and let $B(M)$ be the graded M\"obius algebra of its lattice of flats. The ordered-basis weights of flats define an inner product for which the adjoints of atom multiplication become ordinary coordinate derivatives under the basis-polynomial realization. From this, we construct a canonical global lowering operator $D_\beta$ which acts as ordinary differentiation on a canonical ``radial'' copy of a truncated polynomial algebra. Allowing both $D_\beta$ and the coordinate derivatives to act produces a graded cyclic module with Hilbert series \[ H_{\beta,M}(q)=\sum_{k=0}^r h_k^\beta(M)q^k. \] We give examples of matroids with the same Derksen $\mathcal G$-invariant and the same classical apolar Hilbert series but different $H_\beta$. Hence $H_\beta$ cannot be the restriction to simple matroids of a valuative matroid invariant. We conjecture that $H_\beta$ is log-concave and top-heavy in differential degree. For the generalized theta family containing Larson's counterexample to Whitney log-concavity, we compute the first four coefficients and prove the critical log-concavity inequality. Exact computation verifies both conjectures for all $950$ simple matroids on eight elements.

Approximate factorization properties for operator systems

We show that many of the standard nuclearity properties considered in the literature for the hierarchy of operator system tensor products can be expressed as approximate factorization properties, generalizing the well-known Completely Positive Approximation Property for nuclear C*-algebras due to Choi and Effros and its generalization to nuclear operator systems due to Han and Paulsen.

Finite free convolution via reproducing kernels and squarefree algebras

We give a structural account of the finite free convolutions of Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava in terms of reproducing kernel inner products on polynomial spaces and a multilinear model over the squarefree algebra. In this model, additive convolution becomes algebra multiplication, and the nilpotent logarithm linearizes it, recovering the finite free cumulants of Arizmendi and Perales. This perspective leads to a class $\mathcal{LC}_n$ of multilinear polynomials characterized by nonpositivity of higher-order cumulants, closed under additive convolution and satisfying several key permanence properties associated with negatively dependent measures. We show that every graph Laplacian pencil belongs to this class, with higher-order cumulants given by Hamiltonian cycle counts in induced subgraphs.

An operator-theory construction on geometric lattices

We introduce a canonical operator-theoretic construction associated to a finite geometric lattice, in which a simple nonassociative ``diamond product'' on the lattice basis gives rise to a family of creation operators indexed by atoms and a corresponding self-adjoint Hamiltonian on $\mathbb R[L]$. A key structural feature is that the Hamiltonian changes rank by at most one, so that its compression to the rank-radial subspace is a Jacobi matrix. In this way, geometric lattices give rise in a direct and uniform manner to finite orthogonal polynomial systems. The Jacobi coefficients admit explicit combinatorial formulas. For Boolean lattices one obtains the centered Krawtchouk Jacobi matrix, while for projective geometries one obtains natural $q$-deformations consistent with the $q$-Hahn family. The construction applies to arbitrary geometric lattices and requires no symmetry assumptions.

On definability of C*-tensor norms

We initiate the study of definability (in the model-theoretic sense) of C*-tensor norms. We show that neither the minimal nor maximal tensor norms are definable uniformly over all C*-algebras. The proof in the case of the minimal tensor product norm uses a deep theorem of Kirchberg characterizing exactness in terms of tensor products with matrix ultraproducts while the case of maximal tensor products uses Pisier's recent characterization of the lifting property in terms of maximal tensor products and ultraproducts. We also study the question of when one of these tensor products can be definable in a particular C*-algebra. We establish some negative results along these lines for particular C*-algebras and when the definability condition is strengthened to be computable and of a restricted quantifier-complexity; these results use the quantum complexity results MIP$^*$=RE and MIP$^{co}=$coRE. As a byproduct of our arguments, we answer a question of Fritz, Netzer, and Thom by showing that the norm on $C^*(\mathbb{F}_n\times \mathbb{F}_n)$ is not computable for any $n\in \{2,3,\ldots,\infty\}$.

The model theory of metric lattices: pseudofinite partition lattices

We initiate the study of general metric lattices in the context of the model theory of metric structures. As an application we develop a theory of pseudo-finite limits of partition lattices and connect this theory with the theory of continuous limits of partition lattices due to Bj\"orner and Lov\'asz.

Totally Bounded Elements in W*-probability Spaces

We introduce the notion of a totally ($K$-) bounded element of a W*-probability space $(M, \varphi)$ and, borrowing ideas of Kadison, give an intrinsic characterization of the $^*$-subalgebra $M_{tb}$ of totally bounded elements. Namely, we show that $M_{tb}$ is the unique strongly dense $^*$-subalgebra $M_0$ of totally bounded elements of $M$ for which the collection of totally $1$-bounded elements of $M_0$ is complete with respect to the $\|\cdot\|_\varphi^\#$-norm and for which $M_0$ is closed under all operators $h_a(\log(\Delta))$ for $a \in \mathbb{N}$, where $\Delta$ is the modular operator and $h_a(t):=1/\cosh(t-a)$ (see Theorem 4.3). As an application, we combine this characterization with Rieffel and Van Daele's bounded approach to modular theory to arrive at a new language and axiomatization of W*-probability spaces as metric structures. Previous work of Dabrowski had axiomatized W*-probability spaces using a smeared version of multiplication, but the subalgebra $M_{tb}$ allows us to give an axiomatization in terms of the original algebra operations. Finally, we prove the (non-)axiomatizability of several classes of W*-probability spaces.

Remarks on the Grothendieck norm

The goal of this short note is to point out three observations around the Grothendieck norm and semidefinite programming. The first is that the Grothendieck norm captures the difficulty of relating the off-diagonal entries of a real, symmetric matrix to a probabilistic correlation, the second is that there is an interesting ``Fourier''-type duality between the Schur and Grothendieck norms of a real matrix, and the third and last centers around the difficulty of finding an efficiently computable noncommutative analog to the Grothendieck norm.

An Index for Inclusions of Operator Systems

Inspired by a well-known characterization of the index of an inclusion of II$_1$ factors due to Pimsner and Popa, we define an index-type invariant for inclusions of operator systems. We compute examples of this invariant, show that it is multiplicative under minimal tensor products, and explain how it generalizes the quantum Lov\'asz theta invariant for a matricial system defined by Duan, Severini, and Winter.

Approximating projections by quantum operations

Using techniques from semidefinite programming, we study the problem of finding a closest quantum channel to the projection onto a matricial subsystem. We derive two invariants of matricial subsystems which are related to the quantum Lov\'asz theta function of Duan, Severini, and Winter.

Lipschitz geometry of operator spaces and Lipschitz-free operator spaces

We show that there is an operator space notion of Lipschitz embeddability between operator spaces which is strictly weaker than its linear counterpart but which is still strong enough to impose linear restrictions on operator space structures. This shows that there is a nontrivial theory of nonlinear geometry for operator spaces and it answers a question in [BCD21]. For that, we introduce the operator space version of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces and prove several properties of it. In particular, we show that separable operator spaces satisfy a sort of isometric Lipschitz-lifting property in the sense of G. Godefroy and N. Kalton. Gateaux differentiability of Lipschitz maps in the operator space category is also studied.

Malnormal matrices

We exhibit an operator norm bounded, infinite sequence $\{A_n\}$ of $3n \times 3n$ complex matrices for which the commutator map $X\mapsto XA_n - A_nX$ is uniformly bounded below as an operator over the space of trace-zero self-adjoint matrices equipped with Hilbert--Schmidt norm. The construction is based on families of quantum expanders. We give several potential applications of these matrices to the study of quantum expanders. We formulate several natural conjectures and problems related to such matrices and provide numerical evidence.

A random matrix approach to absorption in free products

This paper gives a free entropy theoretic perspective on amenable absorption results for free products of tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we give the first free entropy proof of Popa's famous result that the generator MASA in a free group factor is maximal amenable, and we partially recover Houdayer's results on amenable absorption and Gamma stability. Moreover, we give a unified approach to all these results using $1$-bounded entropy. We show that if $\mathcal{M} = \mathcal{P} * \mathcal{Q}$, then $\mathcal{P}$ absorbs any subalgebra of $\mathcal{M}$ that intersects it diffusely and that has $1$-bounded entropy zero (which includes amenable and property Gamma algebras as well as many others). In fact, for a subalgebra $\mathcal{P} \leq \mathcal{M}$ to have this absorption property, it suffices for $\mathcal{M}$ to admit random matrix models that have exponential concentration of measure and that "simulate" the conditional expectation onto $\mathcal{P}$.

A Ribe theorem for noncommutative L$_1$-spaces and Lipschitz free operator spaces

These notes have the intent to introduce the study of the nonlinear aspects of operator space theory. We investigate some results on the nonlinear theory of Banach spaces which remain valid in the noncommutative case. In particular, we show that Ribe's theorem has a complete analog to preduals of von Neumann algebras and introduce the concept of the Lipschitz free operator space of an operator space. We use those to prove results about injective von Neumann algebras, Pisier's operator space OH, and the existence of complete linear isometric embeddings between operator spaces.

Maximal rigid subalgebras of deformations and $L^{2}$-cohomology

In the past two decades, Sorin Popa's breakthrough deformation/rigidity theory has produced remarkable rigidity results for von Neumann algebras $M$ which can be deformed inside a larger algebra $\widetilde M \supseteq M$ by an action $\alpha: \mathbb{R} \to {\rm Aut}(\widetilde M)$, while simultaneously containing subalgebras $Q$ {\it rigid} with respect to that deformation, that is, such that $\alpha_t \to {\rm id}$ uniformly on the unit ball of $Q$ as $t \to 0$. However, it has remained unclear how to exploit the interplay between distinct rigid subalgebras not in specified relative position. We show that in fact, any diffuse subalgebra which is rigid with respect to a mixing s-malleable deformation is contained in a subalgebra which is uniquely maximal with respect to being rigid. In particular, the algebra generated by any family of rigid subalgebras that intersect diffusely must itself be rigid with respect to that deformation. The case where this family has two members was the motivation for this work, showing for example that if $G$ is a countable group with $\beta^{1}_{(2)}(G) > 0$, then $L(G)$ cannot be generated by two property $(T)$ subalgebras with diffuse intersection; however, the result is most striking when the family is infinite.

Correspondences, Ultraproducts and Model Theory

We study correspondences of tracial von Neumann algebras from the model-theoretic point of view. We introduce and study an ultraproduct of correspondences and use this ultraproduct to prove, for a fixed pair of tracial von Neumann algebras M and N, that the class of M-N correspondences forms an elementary class. We prove that the corresponding theory is classifiable, all of its completions are stable, that these completions have quantifier elimination in an appropriate language, and that one of these completions is in fact the model companion. We also show that the class of triples (M, H, N), where M and N are tracial von Neumann algebras and H is an M-N correspondence, form an elementary class. As an application of our framework, we show that a II_1 factor M has property (T) precisely when the set of central vectors form a definable set relative to the theory of M-M correspondences. We then use our approach to give a simpler proof that the class of structures (M, Phi), where M is a sigma-finite von Neumann algebra and Phi is a faithful normal state, forms an elementary class. Finally, we initiate the study of a family of Connes-type ultraproducts on C*-algebras.
