Scalar Curvature Rigidity for Products of convex Hypersurfaces and even dimensional Manifolds

We give a proof of scalar curvature rigidity in the spirit of Llarull and Goette-Semmelmann for products of strictly convex hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and nonnegatively curved spaces with non-vanishing Euler-characteristic. Our proof is based on the Fredholm family index theorem. This recovers corresponding results of Lockman-Zeidler where Clifford-linear (family) index theory is used.

Topological Complexity of symplectic CW-complexes

A cohomology class u of a topological space X is atoroidal if its pullback to the torus vanishes for every map from a torus to X. Furthermore, X is atoroidally symplectic if there is an atoroidal cohomology class $u\in H^2(X;F)$ such that $u^n$ is non-zero. We prove that every atoroidally symplectic CW-complex X of dimension 2n has topological complexity 4n. This generalizes a result of Grant and Mescher who prove the corresponding statement in the case where X is an atoroidally c-symplectic manifold and u is a de Rham cohomology class. Using this generalisation, we obtain new calculations of topological complexity, including for many products of 3-manifolds and of group presentation complexes.

Abstract cone operators and Lipschitz rigidity for scalar curvature on singular manifolds

Using the index theory for twisted Dirac operators acting on sections of Lipschitz bundles over non-compact manifolds, we prove Llarull-type comparison results in scalar curvature geometry. They apply to spin Riemannian manifolds with cone-type singularities and Lipschitz comparison maps to spheres. We use the language of abstract cone operators which are introduced and studied in a general functional analytic setting and which may be of independent interest. Applying our discussion to spherical suspensions of odd-dimensional closed manifolds, we generalize a Lipschitz rigidity result of the first three named authors from even to odd dimensions. Under stronger conditions, this has already been shown by Lee-Tam using geometric flows and by Baer using an upper estimate for the smallest Dirac eigenvalue.

Stolz Positive Scalar Curvature Structure Groups, Proper Actions and Equivariant 2-Types

In this note, we study equivariant versions of Stolz' $R$-groups, the positive scalar curvature structure groups $R^{\rm spin}_n(X)^G$, for proper actions of discrete groups $G$. We define the concept of a fundamental groupoid functor for a $G$-space, encapsulating all the fundamental group information of all the fixed point sets and their relations. We construct classifying spaces for fundamental groupoid functors. As a geometric result, we show that Stolz' equivariant $R$-group $R^{\rm spin}_n(X)^G$ depends only on the fundamental groupoid functor of the reference space $X$. The proof covers at the same time in a concise and clear way the classical non-equivariant case.

Lipschitz rigidity for scalar curvature

Let $M$ be a closed smooth connected spin manifold of even dimension $n$, let $g$ be a Riemannian metric of regularity $W^{1,p}$, $p > n$, on $M$ whose distributional scalar curvature in the sense of Lee-LeFloch is bounded below by $n(n-1)$, and let $f \colon (M,g) \to \mathbb{S}^n$ be a $1$-Lipschitz continuous (not necessarily smooth) map of non-zero degree to the unit $n$-sphere. Then $f$ is a metric isometry. This generalizes a result of Llarull (1998) and answers in the affirmative a question of Gromov (2019) in his "Four lectures". Our proof is based on spectral properties of Dirac operators for low regularity Riemannian metrics and twisted with Lipschitz bundles. We argue that the existence of a non-zero harmonic spinor field forces $f$ to be quasiregular in the sense of Reshetnyak, and in this way connect the powerful theory for quasiregular maps to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.

Equivariant Topological T-Duality

Topological T-duality is a relationship between pairs (E, P ) over a fixed space X, where E over X is a principal torus bundle and P over E is a twist, such as a gerbe of principal PU(H)-bundle. This is of interest to topologists because of the T-duality transformation: a T-duality relation between pairs (E, P ) and (F, Q ) comes with an isomorphism (with degree shift) between the twisted K-theory of E and the twisted K-theory of F. We formulate topological T-duality in the equivariant setting, following the definition of Bunke, Rumpf, and Schick. We define the T-duality transformation in equivariant K-theory and show that it is an isomorphism for actions of compact Lie groups, equal to its own inverse and uniquely characterized by naturality and a normalization for trivial situations.

On positive scalar curvature bordism

Using standard results from higher (secondary) index theory, we prove that the positive scalar curvature bordism groups of a cartesian product GxZ are infinite in dimension 4n if n>0 G a group with non-trivial torsion. We construct representatives of each of these classes which are connected and with fundamental group GxZ. We get the same result in dimension 4n+2 (n>0) if G is finite and contains an element which is not conjugate to its inverse. This generalizes the main result of Kazaras, Ruberman, Saveliev, "On positive scalar curvature cobordism and the conformal Laplacian on end-periodic manifolds" to arbitrary even dimensions and arbitrary groups with torsion.

The topology of T-duality for T^n-bundles

In string theory, the concept of T-duality between two principal T^n-bundles E_1 and E_2 over the same base space B, together with cohomology classes h_1\in H^3(E_1) and h_2\in H^3(E_2), has been introduced. One of the main virtues of T-duality is that h_1-twisted K-theory of E_1 is isomorphic to h_2-twisted K-theory of E_2. In this paper, a new, very topological concept of T-duality is introduced. We construct a classifying space for pairs as above with additional "dualizing data", with a forgetful map to the classifying space for pairs (also constructed in the paper). On the first classifying space, we have an involution which corresponds to passage to the dual pair, i.e. to each pair with dualizing data exists a well defined dual pair (with dualizing data). We show that a pair (E,h) can be lifted to a pair with dualizing data if an only if h belongs to the second step of the Leray-Serre filtration of E (i.e. not always), and that in general many different lifts exist, with topologically different dual bundles. We establish several properties of the T-dual pairs. In particular, we prove a T-duality isomorphism of degree -n for twisted K-theory.

Combinatorial zeta functions counting triangles

In this paper, we compute special values of certain combinatorial zeta functions counting geodesic paths in the (n-1)-skeleton of a triangulation of a n-dimensional manifold. We show that they carry a topological meaning. As such, we recover the first Betti number and L2-Betti number of compact manifolds, and the linking number of pairs of null-homologous knots in a 3-manifold. The tool to relate the two sides (counting geodesics/topological invariants) are random walks on higher dimensional skeleta of the triangulation.

Conormal homology of manifolds with corners

Given a manifold with corners $X$, we associates to it the corner structure simplicial complex $Σ_X$. Its reduced K-homology is isomorphic to the K-theory of the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{K}_b(X)$ of b-compact operators on $X$. Moreover, the homology of $Σ_X$ is isomorphic to the conormal homology of $X$. In this note, we constract for an arbitrary abstract finite simplicial complex $Σ$ a manifold with corners $X$ such that $Σ_X\cong Σ$. As a consequence, the homology and K-homology which occur for finite simplicial complexes also occur as conormal homology of manifolds with corners and as K-theory of their b-compact operators. In particular, these groups can contain torsion.

A Fixed Point Decomposition of Twisted Equivariant K-Theory

We present a decomposition of rational twisted $G$-equivariant K-theory, $G$ a finite group, into cyclic group equivariant K-theory groups of fixed point spaces. This generalises the untwisted decomposition by Atiyah and Segal as well as the decomposition by Adem and Ruan for twists coming from group cocycles.

Remarks on the paper "On Gromov's dihedral extremality and rigidity conjectures" by Jinmin Wang, Zhizhang Xie and Guoliang Yu

Version 2 of the article "On Gromov's dihedral extremality and rigidity conjectures" by Jinmin Wang, Zhizhang Xie and Guoliang Yu makes a number of claims for self-adjoint extensions of Dirac type operators on manifolds with corners under local boundary conditions. We construct a counterexample to an index computation in that paper which affects the proof of its main result stating a generalisation of Gromov's dihedral extremality conjecture.

A new approach to topological T-duality for principal torus bundles

We introduce a new `Thom class' formulation of topological T-duality for principal torus bundles. This definition is equivalent to the established one of Bunke, Rumpf, and Schick but has the virtue of removing the global assumptions on the H-flux required in the old definition. With the new definition, we provide easier and more transparent proofs of the classification of T-duals and generalise the local formulation of T-duality for circle bundles by Bunke, Schick, and Spitzweck to the torus case.

Enlargeable metrics on nonspin manifolds

We show that an enlargeable Riemannian metric on a (possibly nonspin) manifold cannot have uniformly positive scalar curvature. This extends a well-known result of Gromov and Lawson to the nonspin setting. We also prove that every noncompact manifold admits a nonenlargeable metric. In proving the first result, we use the main result of the recent paper by Schoen and Yau on minimal hypersurfaces to obstruct positive scalar curvature in arbitrary dimensions. More concretely, we use this to study nonzero degree maps f from a manifold X to the product of the k-sphere with the n-k dimensional torus, with k=1,2,3. When X is a closed oriented manifold endowed with a metric g of positive scalar curvature and the map f is (possibly area) contracting, we prove inequalities relating the lower bound of the scalar curvature of g and the contracting factor of the map f.

The derivative map for diffeomorphism of disks: An example

We prove that the derivative map $d \colon \mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^k) \to Ω^kSO_k$, defined by taking the derivative of a diffeomorphism, can induce a nontrivial map on homotopy groups. Specifically, for $k = 11$ we prove that the following homomorphism is non-zero: $$ d_* \colon π_5\mathrm{Diff}_\partial(D^{11}) \to π_{5}Ω^{11}SO_{11} \cong π_{16}SO_{11} $$ As a consequence we give a counter-example to a conjecture of Burghelea and Lashof and so give an example of a non-trivial vector bundle $E$ over a sphere which is trivial as a topological $\mathbb{R}^k$-bundle (the rank of $E$ is $k=11$ and the base sphere is $S^{17}$.) The proof relies on a recent result of Burklund and Senger which determines those homotopy 17-spheres bounding $8$-connected manifolds, the plumbing approach to the Gromoll filtration due to Antonelli, Burghelea and Kahn, and an explicit construction of low-codimension embeddings of certain homotopy spheres.

Positive Scalar Curvature due to the Cokernel of the Classifying Map

This paper contributes to the classification of positive scalar curvature metrics up to bordism and up to concordance. Let $M$ be a closed spin manifold of dimension $\ge 5$ which admits a metric with positive scalar curvature. We give lower bounds on the rank of the group of psc metrics over $M$ up to bordism in terms of the corank of the canonical map $KO_*(M)\to KO_*(Bπ_1(M))$, provided the rational analytic Novikov conjecture is true for $π_1(M)$.
