From zero solutions with partially bounded supports to solvability and Runge approximation for partial differential equations

The existence of non-trivial solutions of homogeneous partial differential equations with prescribed support properties plays a fundamental role in the theory of linear partial differential operators. In this article, we establish the existence of smooth zero solutions with partially bounded supports for a broad class of constant coefficient partial differential operators. As applications, we obtain new geometric results concerning solvability and approximation for partial differential equations. In particular, we derive geometric characterizations of $P$-convexity for supports for a large class of non-elliptic operators, thereby extending classical geometric ideas of H\"ormander. By a theorem of Malgrange, $P$-convexity for supports is equivalent to the surjectivity of the differential operator on spaces of smooth functions and, more generally, on local subspaces of distributions of finite order. As a further consequence, we prove that the kernel of every surjective semi-elliptic operator satisfies condition ($\Omega$) implying parameter dependence results. We also investigate Runge-type approximation phenomena. We obtain geometric characterizations of Runge pairs for smooth functions, distributions, and spaces of smooth Whitney jets. Finally, we develop a general framework for Runge approximation for square systems of constant coefficient partial differential equations. As applications, we recover by alternative methods known Runge approximation results for Beltrami fields and for the three-dimensional unsteady Stokes system, and we complement them by corresponding approximation theorems in spaces of smooth Whitney jets. In particular, this yields approximation up to the boundary for solutions on suitable domains with H\"older continuous boundary.

Mean and pointwise ergodicity for composition operators on rearrangement-invariant spaces

We study ergodicity of composition operators on rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. More precisely, we give a natural and easy-to-check condition on the symbol of the operator which entails mean ergodicity on a very large class of rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. Further, we present some natural additional assumptions that allow us to obtain pointwise ergodicity. The class of spaces covered by our results contains many non-reflexive spaces, such as the Lorentz spaces $L^{p, 1}$ and $L^{p,\infty}$, $p \in (1, \infty)$, Orlicz spaces $L \log^{\alpha} L$ and $\exp L^{\alpha}$, $\alpha > 0$, and the spaces $L^1$ and $L^{\infty}$ over measure spaces of finite measure. The main novelty in our approach is the application of a new locally convex topology which we introduce and which lies strictly between the norm topology and the weak topology induced by the associate space. Throughout, we give several examples which illustrate the applicability of our results as well as highlight the necessity and optimality of our assumptions.

Strongly continuous fields of operators over varying Hilbert spaces

After introducing a natural notion of continuous fields of locally convex spaces, we establish a new theory of strongly continuous families of possibly unbounded self-adjoint operators over varying Hilbert spaces. This setting allows to treat operator families defined on bundles of Hilbert spaces that are not locally trivial (such as e.g.~the tangent bundle of Wasserstein space), without referring to identification operators at all.

Runge type approximation results for spaces of smooth Whitney jets

We prove Runge type approximation results for linear partial differential operators with constant coefficients on spaces of smooth Whitney jets. Among others, we characterize when for a constant coefficient linear partial differential operator $P(D)$ and for closed subsets $F_1\subset F_2$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ the restrictions to $F_1$ of smooth Whitney jets $f$ on $F_2$ satisfying $P(D)f=0$ on $F_2$ are dense in the space of smooth Whitney jets on $F_1$ satisfying the same partial differential equation on $F_1$. For elliptic operators we give a geometric evaluation of this characterization. Additionally, for differential operators with a single characteristic direction, like parabolic operators, we give a sufficient geometric condition for the above density to hold. Under mild additional assumptions on $\partial F_1$ and for $F_2=\mathbb{R}^d$ this sufficient conditions is also necessary. As an application of our work, we characterize those open subsets $\Omega$ of the complex plane satisfying $\Omega=\operatorname{int}\overline{\Omega}$ for which the set of holomorphic polynomials are dense in $A^\infty(\Omega)$, under the mild additional hypothesis that $\overline{\Omega}$ satisfies the strong regularity condition. Furthermore, for the wave operator in one spatial variable, a simple sufficient geometric condition on $F_1, F_2\subset\mathbb{R}^2$ is given for the above density to hold. For the special case of $F_2=\mathbb{R}^2$ this sufficient condition is also necessary under mild additional hypotheses on $F_1$.

Power boundedness and related properties for weighted composition operators on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)$

We characterize those pairs $(\psi,\varphi)$ of smooth mappings $\psi:\mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{C},\varphi:\mathbb{R}^d\rightarrow\mathbb{R}^d$ for which the corresponding weighted composition operator $C_{\psi,\varphi}f=\psi\cdot(f\circ\varphi)$ acts continuously on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)$. Additionally, we give several easy-to-check necessary and sufficient conditions of this property for interesting special cases. Moreover, we characterize power boundedness and topologizablity of $C_{\psi,\varphi}$ on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ in terms of $\psi,\varphi$. Among other things, as an application of our results we show that for a univariate polynomial $\varphi$ with $\text{deg}(\varphi)\geq 2$, power boundedness of $C_{\psi,\varphi}$ on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R})$ for every $\psi\in\mathscr{O}_M(\mathbb{R})$ only depends on $\varphi$ and that in this case power boundedness of $C_{\psi,\varphi}$ is equivalent to $(C_{\psi,\varphi}^n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ converging to $0$ in $\mathcal{L}_b(\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R}))$ as well as to the uniform mean ergodicity of $C_{\psi,\varphi}$. Additionally, we give an example of a power bounded and uniformly mean ergodic weighted composition operator $C_{\psi,\varphi}$ on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R})$ for which neither the multiplication operator $f\mapsto \psi f$ nor the composition operator $f\mapsto f\circ\varphi$ acts on $\mathscr{S}(\mathbb{R})$. Our results complement and considerably extend various results of Fern\'andez, Galbis, and the second named author.

Hypercyclic and mixing composition operators on $\mathscr{O}_M(\mathbb{R})$

In this paper we characterize mixing composition operators acting on the space $\mathscr{O}_M(\mathbb{R})$ of slowly increasing smooth functions. Moreover we relate the mixing property of those operators with the solvability of Abel's functional equation and we give a sufficient condition for sequential hypercyclicity of composition operators on $\mathscr{O}_M(\mathbb{R})$. This is used to prove that many mixing composition operators are hypercyclic.

Mean ergodic weighted shifts on K\"othe echelon spaces

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for mean ergodicity, power boundedness, and topologizability for weighted backward shift and weighted forward shift operators, respectively, on K\"othe echelon spaces in terms of the weight sequence and the K\"othe matrix. These conditions are evaluated for the special case of power series spaces which allow for a characterization of said properties in many cases. In order to demonstrate the applicability of our conditions, we study the above properties for several classical operators on certain function spaces.

Linear topological invariants for kernels of differential operators by shifted fundamental solutions

We characterize the condition $(\Omega)$ for smooth kernels of partial differential operators in terms of the existence of shifted fundamental solutions satisfying certain properties. The conditions $(P\Omega)$ and $(P\overline{\overline{\Omega}})$ for distributional kernels are characterized in a similar way. By lifting theorems for Fr\'echet spaces and (PLS)-spaces, this provides characterizations of the problem of parameter dependence for smooth and distributional solutions of differential equations by shifted fundamental solutions. As an application, we give a new proof of the fact that the space $\{ f \in \mathscr{E}(X) \, | \, P(D)f = 0\}$ satisfies $(\Omega)$ for any differential operator $P(D)$ and any open convex set $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$.

Quantitative Runge type approximation theorems for zero solutions of certain partial differential operators

We prove quantitative Runge type approximation results for spaces of smooth zero solutions of several classes of linear partial differential operators with constant coefficients. Among others, we establish such results for arbitrary operators on convex sets, elliptic operators, parabolic operators, and the wave operator in one spatial variable. Our methods are inspired by the study of linear topological invariants for kernels of partial differential operators. As a part of our work, we also show a qualitative Runge type approximation theorem for subspace elliptic operators, which seems to be new and of independent interest.

Linear topological invariants for kernels of convolution and differential operators

We establish the condition $(\Omega)$ for smooth kernels of various types of convolution and differential operators. By the $(DN)$-$(\Omega)$ splitting theorem of Vogt and Wagner, this implies that these operators are surjective on the corresponding spaces of vector-valued smooth functions with values in a product of Montel $(DF)$-spaces whose strong duals satisfy the condition $(DN)$, e.g., the space $\mathscr{D}'(Y)$ of distributions over an open set $Y \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n$ or the space $\mathscr{S}'(\mathbb{R}^n)$ of tempered distributions. Most notably, we show that: $(i)$ $\mathscr{E}_P(X) = \{ f \in \mathscr{E}(X) \, | \, P(D)f = 0 \}$ satisfies $(\Omega)$ for any differential operator $P(D)$ and any open convex set $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$. $(ii)$ Let $P\in\mathbb{C}[\xi_1,\xi_2]$ and $X \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ open be such that $P(D):\mathscr{E}(X)\rightarrow\mathscr{E}(X)$ is surjective. Then, $\mathscr{E}_P(X)$ satisfies $(\Omega)$. $(iii)$ Let $\mu \in \mathscr{E}'(\mathbb{R}^d)$ be such that $ \mathscr{E}(\mathbb{R}^d) \rightarrow \mathscr{E}(\mathbb{R}^d), \, f \mapsto \mu \ast f$ is surjective. Then, $ \{ f \in \mathscr{E}(\mathbb{R}^d) \, | \, \mu \ast f = 0 \}$ satisfies $(\Omega)$. The central result in this paper states that the space of smooth zero solutions of a general convolution equation satisfies the condition $(\Omega)$ if and only if the space of distributional zero solutions of the equation satisfies the condition $(P\Omega)$. The above and related results then follow from known results concerning $(P\Omega)$ for distributional kernels of convolution and differential operators.

Mean ergodic composition operators on spaces of smooth functions and distributions

We investigate (uniform) mean ergodicity of weighted composition operators on the space of smooth functions and the space of distributions, both over an open subset of the real line. Among other things, we prove that a composition operator with a real analytic diffeomorphic symbol is mean ergodic on the space of distributions if and only if it is periodic with period 2. Our results are based on a characterization of mean ergodicity in terms of Ces\`aro boundedness and a growth property of the orbits for operators on Montel spaces which is of independent interest.

Integrability and Approximability of Solutions to the Stationary Diffusion Equation with L\'evy Coefficient

We investigate the stationary diffusion equation with a coefficient given by a (transformed) L\'evy random field. L\'evy random fields are constructed by smoothing L\'evy noise fields with kernels from the Mat\'ern class. We show that L\'evy noise naturally extends Gaussian white noise within Minlos' theory of generalized random fields. Results on the distributional path spaces of L\'evy noise are derived as well as the amount of smoothing to ensure such distributions become continuous paths. Given this, we derive results on the pathwise existence and measurability of solutions to the random boundary value problem (BVP). For the solutions of the BVP we prove existence of moments (in the $H^1$-norm) under adequate growth conditions on the L\'evy measure of the noise field. Finally, a kernel expansion of the smoothed L\'evy noise fields is introduced and convergence in $L^n$ ($n\geq 1$) of the solutions associated with the approximate random coefficients is proven with an explicit rate.

Boundary values of zero solutions of hypoelliptic differential operators in ultradistribution spaces

We study ultradistributional boundary values of zero solutions of a hypoelliptic constant coefficient partial differential operator $P(D) = P(D_x, D_t)$ on $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$. Our work unifies and considerably extends various classical results of Komatsu and Matsuzawa about boundary values of holomorphic functions, harmonic functions and zero solutions of the heat equation in ultradistribution spaces. We also give new proofs of several results of Langenbruch [23] about distributional boundary values of zero solutions of $P(D)$.

Topologizable and power bounded weighted composition operators on spaces of distributions

We study topologizability and power boundedness of weigh\-ted composition operators on (certain subspaces of) $\mathscr{D}'(X)$ for an open subset $X$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$. For the former property we derive a characterization in terms of the symbol and the weight of the weighted composition operator, while for the latter property necessary and sufficient conditions on the weight and the symbol are presented. Moreover, for an unweighted composition operator a characterization of power boundedness in terms of the symbol is derived for the special case of a bijective symbol.

Dynamics of shift operators on non-metrizable sequence spaces

We investigate dynamical properties such as topological transitivity, (sequential) hypercyclicity, and chaos for backward shift operators associated to a Schauder basis on LF-spaces. As an application, we characterize these dynamical properties for weighted generalized backward shifts on K\"othe coechelon sequence spaces $k_p((v^{(m)})_{m\in\mathbb{N}})$ in terms of the defining sequence of weights $(v^{(m)})_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We further discuss several examples and show that the annihilation operator from quantum mechanics is mixing, sequentially hypercyclic, chaotic, and topologically ergodic on $\mathscr{S}'(\mathbb{R})$.

Power bounded weighted composition operators on function spaces defined by local properties

We study power boundedness and related properties such as mean ergodicity for (weighted) composition operators on function spaces defined by local properties. As a main application of our general approach we characterize when (weighted) composition operators are power bounded, topologizable, and (uniformly) mean ergodic on kernels of certain linear partial differential operators including elliptic operators as well as non-degenrate parabolic operators. Moreover, under mild assumptions on the weight and the symbol we give a characterisation of those weighted composition operators on the Fr\'echet space of continuous functions on a locally compact, $\sigma$-compact, non-compact Hausdorff space which are generators of strongly continuous semigroups on these spaces.

An approximation theorem of Runge type for kernels of certain non-elliptic partial differential operators

For a constant coefficient partial differential operator $P(D)$ with a single characteristic direction such as the time-dependent free Schr\"odinger operator as well as non-degenerate parabolic differential operators like the heat operator we characterize when open subsets $X_1\subseteq X_2$ of $\mathbb{R}^d$ form a $P$-Runge pair. The presented condition does not require any kind of regularity of the boundaries of $X_1$ nor $X_2$. As part of our result we prove that for a large class of non-elliptic operators $P(D)$ there are smooth solutions $u$ to the equation $P(D)u=0$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with support contained in an arbitarily narrow slab bounded by two parallel characteristic hyperplanes for $P(D)$.

Dynamics of weighted composition operators on function spaces defined by local properties

We study topological transitivity/hypercyclicity and topological (weak) mixing for weighted composition operators on locally convex spaces of scalar-valued functions which are defined by local properties. As main application of our general approach we characterize these dynamical properties for weighted composition operators on spaces of ultradifferentiable functions, both of Beurling and Roumieu type, and on spaces of zero solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. Special attention is given to eigenspaces of the Laplace operator and the Cauchy-Riemann operator, respectively. Moreover, we show that our abstract approach unifies existing results which characterize hypercyclicity, resp. topological mixing, of (weighted) composition operators on the space of holomorphic functions on a simply connected domain in the complex plane, on the space of smooth functions on an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, as well as results characterizing topological transitiviy of such operators on the space of real analytic functions on an open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$.
