A Task Force on Strong Coupling Determinations from Event Shapes

The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model. Its precise determination is essential for accurately predicting, studying, and understanding processes at the Large Hadron Collider and future experiments such as the Future Circular Collider. Event shape and correlator observables measured at electron-positron colliders provide one of the cleanest environments for extracting $\alpha_s$, thanks to their sensitivity to $\alpha_s$ and the availability of high-precision data from the Large Electron-Positron Collider. More broadly, such observables provide an ideal setting to develop and test our understanding of the perturbative and non-perturbative elements of Quantum Chromodynamics, which will underpin the field's precision and discovery frontiers for decades to come. Despite these advances, significant discrepancies persist between different determinations of $\alpha_s$ from event shapes, both in the extracted central values and estimated uncertainties. This document motivates the establishment of a dedicated Task Force to coordinate a community-wide effort addressing these open questions. We report on the first two-day meeting held at CERN in November 2025, summarizing the scientific discussion and documenting the experimental analyses identified as priorities during the meeting, as well as the concrete list of tasks to be carried out by the theory community in preparation for future meetings.

The four-loop non-singlet splitting functions in QCD

The scale evolution of parton distributions is governed by splitting functions. We compute the four-loop splitting functions in perturbative QCD that control the evolution of quark non-singlet distributions. We confirm previous partial results and obtain, for the first time, fully analytic expressions for all non-singlet contributions at this order. These allow us to extract the analytic form of the four-loop virtual and rapidity anomalous dimensions entering logarithmic resummation. We provide precise numerical representations of the splitting functions suitable for parton evolution.

Precise QCD Predictions for Hadron-in-jet Production in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

The production of identified hadrons inside jets in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation allows for detailed studies of parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions in a clean environment. We compute hadron-in-jets production cross sections for $e^+e^- \to 2\,\mathrm{jets}$ and $e^+e^- \to 3\,\mathrm{jets}$ to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbative QCD. By comparing with data from the ALEPH experiment, we demonstrate the implications of the newly computed theory predictions for precision phenomenology.

NNLO+NNLL Predictions for Heavy-Jet Mass and C-parameter in Higgs Decays to Quarks and Gluons

We consider the resummation of large logarithmic corrections arising in the two-particle limit at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy for the heavy-jet mass and $C$-parameter distributions in the decay of a Higgs boson to quarks and gluons: $H\to b\bar{b}$, $H\to c\bar{c}$, and $H\to gg$. We demonstrate how the matched NNLO+NNLL results clarify the relative contributions of key hadronic Higgs-decay channels ($H\to b\bar{b}$, $H\to c\bar{c}$, $H\to gg$) yielding reduced uncertainties for both event-shape observables -- especially for heavy-jet mass -- while revealing substantial effects that shift the $C$-parameter peak in gluonic decays.

Photon-induced jet production at future lepton colliders

The production of hadronic final states in electron-positron or electron-hadron collisions is induced predominantly by quasi-real photons that were emitted off incoming leptons. In these processes, the photon either enters directly or through its resolved parton content, which is at present only loosely constrained by experimental data. We perform a detailed phenomenological study of photon-induced jet production processes in high-energy $e^+e^-$ collisions, investigating in particular their potential to assess contributions from the resolved photon structure.

The Unresolved Behaviour of Polarized Scattering Matrix Elements at NNLO in QCD

Spin asymmetries in collisions of spin-polarized hadrons probe polarized parton distributions, which encode the spin structure of the colliding hadrons. To perform precision physics studies with spin asymmetries, higher order QCD corrections to the underlying polarized cross sections are required. Their numerical implementation relies on the use of an infrared subtraction scheme, which extracts the infrared singular pieces from the real and virtual subprocesses. We derive the universal behaviour of longitudinally polarized real radiation matrix elements in their infrared-singular limits up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD, thereby enabling the construction of infrared subtraction schemes for generic polarized cross sections at NNLO.

The Thrust Distribution at NNLO+NNLL in Higgs Decays to Quarks and Gluons

We present a calculation of the thrust distribution in Higgs decays to quarks and gluons, $H\to b\bar{b}$, $H\to c\bar{c}$, and $H\to gg$, including the resummation of large logarithmic corrections that arise in the two-particle limit at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, and match it to fixed-order results for three-particle decays at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling. The resummation is performed analytically within the ARES framework and combined with the fixed-order results using the logR matching technique. The fixed-order calculation is carried out numerically with the NNLOJET parton-level event generator, using the antenna subtraction method. We perform detailed cross-validation in the two-particle region, demonstrating that the expansion of the NNLL resummed result correctly reproduces the logarithmic structure of the fixed-order calculation to $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_\mathrm{s}^3)$, up to a predictable N$^{3}$LL term at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_\mathrm{s}^3L)$. In addition to providing the first NNLO+NNLL accurate predictions for the thrust distribution in Higgs decays to quarks and gluons, we analytically extract the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_\mathrm{s}^2)$ hard-virtual correction $c_2$ and the $\alpha_\mathrm{s}^3L$ term $G_{31}$ in both the $H\to q\bar{q}$ ($q=b,c$) and $H\to gg$ decay channels.

Polarized Neutral and Charged Current Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at NNLO in QCD

The semi-inclusive production of identified hadrons in deeply inelastic lepton scattering on polarized nucleons allows to probe the spin structure of the nucleon target in a more detailed level than through fully inclusive processes. We compute the NNLO QCD corrections to longitudinally polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic processes mediated by electroweak neutral and charged currents. We present the first calculation of polarized electroweak structure functions in the Larin scheme up to NNLO. Additionally, we reformulate the finite scheme transformation to the $\overline{\textrm{MS}}$ scheme in a quark flavour basis and identify issues in its assignment to partonic channels in previous calculations. Using our results we perform a detailed phenomenological study of polarized cross sections and of single and double spin asymmetries. We observe large electroweak effects, which need to be included in precision studies of polarized observables.

Precise Predictions for Event Shapes in Hadronic Higgs Decays

We present NNLO QCD predictions for a wide range of event-shape observables in hadronic Higgs decays, taking into account the two dominant decay modes $H\to gg$ and $H\to b\bar{b}$. Specifically, we consider the six classical event shapes thrust, heavy jet mass, $C$-parameter, total and wide jet broadening, and the three-jet resolution $y_{23}$ in the Durham algorithm. We also present results for the soft-drop variant of thrust. Decays of the Higgs boson to two gluons are treated in the heavy-top limit, whereas decays to a bottom-quark pair are mediated by a non-vanishing Yukawa coupling, despite considering kinematically massless quarks. Our results highlight the importance of NNLO QCD corrections in the calculation of event-shape observables and provide means to quantify the intrinsic difference between the two Higgs decay modes.

Neutral and Charged Current Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering at NNLO QCD

Semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering (SIDIS) provides important probes of parton distributions and fragmentation functions. We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) massless QCD corrections to the full set of SIDIS coefficient functions in analytical form, accounting for electroweak neutral current and charged current exchange. Focusing on the kinematical setting of SIDIS measurements at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), we quantify the impact of these corrections on the phenomenological predictions and their associated uncertainties. We study the impact of electroweak interference in the neutral current SIDIS process and investigate lepton polarisation asymmetries designed to enhance the sensitivity on charged current SIDIS.

Identified Hadron Production in Deeply Inelastic Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering

The production of identified hadrons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) is sensitive to parton distribution functions and hadron fragmentation functions. Neutrino-induced SIDIS processes probe combinations of these functions different from their charged-lepton-induced counterparts. We compute charged pion production in (anti-)neutrino induced SIDIS up to second order in perturbative QCD and compare our predictions to precise legacy fixed-target data. We demonstrate the high sensitivity of these data on the parametrization of the fragmentation functions and discuss future SIDIS probes at the LHC Forward Physics Facility.

Jet rates in Higgs boson decay at third order in QCD

We compute the production rates for two, three, four and five jets in the hadronic decay of a Higgs boson in its two dominant decay modes to bottom quarks and gluons to third order in the QCD coupling constant. The five-, four- and three-jet rates are obtained from a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculation of Higgs decay to three jets, while the two-jet rate is inferred at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) from the inclusive decay rate. Our results show distinct differences in the dependence of the jet rates on the jet resolution parameter between the two decay modes, supporting the aim of discriminating different Higgs boson decay channels via classic QCD observables.

Precise Predictions for Event Shapes in Diphoton Production at the LHC

Photon pair production is an important benchmark process at the LHC, entering Higgs boson studies and new physics searches. It has been measured to high accuracy, allowing for detailed studies of event shapes in diphoton final states. To enable precision physics with diphoton event shapes, we compute the second-order QCD corrections, ${\cal O} (\alpha_s^3)$, to them and study their phenomenological impact.

Precise Determination of the Strong Coupling Constant from Dijet Cross Sections up to the Multi-TeV Range

We determine the value of the strong coupling $\alpha_\text{s}$ and study its running over a wide range of scales as probed by the dijet production process at hadron colliders, based on an NNLO QCD analysis of LHC dijet data. From a large subset of these data a value of $\alpha_\text{s} (m_\text{Z}) = 0.1178 \pm 0.0022$ is obtained for the strong coupling at the scale of the Z-boson mass $m_\text{Z}$, using the invariant mass of the dijet system to select the scale where $\alpha_\text{s}$ is probed. The combination of different data sets enhances the reach and precision of the analysis in the mutli-TeV range and allows for the first determination of $\alpha_\text{s}$ up to scales of 7 TeV. Complementing the LHC data with dijet cross sections measured at the HERA electron-proton collider, the kinematic range is extended to test the running of the strong coupling towards smaller scales. Our results exhibit excellent agreement with predictions based on the renormalization group equation of QCD, and represent a comprehensive test of the asymptotic behavior of QCD, spanning more than three orders of magnitude in energy scale.

Graded transcendental functions: an application to four-point amplitudes with one off-shell leg

Several recent works have demonstrated the powerful algebraic simplifications that can be achieved for scattering amplitudes through a systematic grading of transcendental quantities. We develop these concepts to construct a minimal basis of functions tailored to a scattering amplitude in a general way. Starting with formal solutions for all master integral topologies, we organise the appearing functions by properties such as their symbol alphabet or letter adjacency. We rotate the basis such that functions with spurious features appear in the least possible number of basis elements. Since their coefficients must vanish for physical quantities, this approach avoids complex cancellations. As a first application, we evaluate all integral topologies relevant to the three-loop $Hggg$ and $Hgq\bar{q}$ amplitudes in the leading-colour approximation and heavy-top limit. We describe the derivation of canonical differential equation systems and present a method for fixing boundary conditions without the need for a full functional representation. Using multiple numerical reductions, we test the maximal transcendentality conjecture for $Hggg$ and identify a new letter which appears in functions of weight 4 and 5. In addition, we provide the first direct analytic computation of a three-point form factor of the operator $\mathrm{Tr}(\phi^2)$ in planar $\mathcal{N}=4$ sYM and find agreement with numerical and bootstrapped results.

Leading Twist-Two Gauge-Variant Counterterms

Anomalous dimensions of twist-two operators govern the scale evolution of parton distribution functions. For off-shell external states, the physical twist-two operators mix with unknown gauge-variant operators under renormalization. In this talk, we apply the method proposed by us in~\cite{Gehrmann:2023ksf} to compute all gauge-variant one-loop counterterm Feynman rules with five legs, which enter the determination of the four-loop splitting functions in QCD.

Single- and double-unresolved limits of polarized tree-level matrix elements

The calculation of exclusive cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD requires an analytic understanding of the infrared singular structure with up to two unresolved partons. This has so far only been achieved for unpolarized matrix elements. We derive the full set of splitting amplitudes arising in longitudinally polarized tree-level QCD matrix elements at NNLO in the Larin $\gamma_5$ scheme. They are extracted from DIS-like processes, and are verified in matrix elements of higher multiplicity. Our results will enable the calculation of NNLO corrections to longitudinal spin asymmetries in polarized collider processes.
