Joint moments of characteristic polynomials in the circular Jacobi ensemble and Painlev\'e equations

In this paper, we establish a connection between joint moments of characteristic polynomials and their derivatives in the Circular Jacobi Ensemble, a generalisation of the Circular Unitary Ensemble, and solutions of nonlinear Painlev\'e equations. For finite $N$, we show that these joint moments are characterised by a solution of the $\sigma$-Painlev\'e V equation for all real moment exponents in their admissible range. Under an appropriate large-$N$ scaling limit, we further prove that the limiting joint moments admit a representation in terms of a solution of the $\sigma$-Painlev\'e III$'$ equation for a certain range of moment exponents. As applications, we answer a question posed by Assiotis et al. in [Math. Physics. Anal. Geom. 25 (2022), no.2, Paper No. 15, 24pp, Remark 1.7] by showing that the characteristic function of a distinguished random variable is connected with the $\sigma$-Painlev\'e III$'$ equation for complex parameters. Furthermore, we investigate joint moments involving higher-order derivatives of characteristic polynomials in the Circular Jacobi Ensemble. As a consequence, we extend a result of Assiotis et al. in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 79 (2026), no. 7, 1771-1827, Theorem 1.11] concerning the joint moments of a sequence of random variables arising from the ergodic decomposition of Hua-Pickrell measures, from real parameters to complex parameters.

On Fredholm Pfaffians and Riemann-Hilbert problems

It is shown how classes of Fredholm Pfaffians can be computed in terms of canonical, auxiliary Riemann-Hilbert problems as soon as the main kernel in the Pfaffian is either of additive Hankel composition or of truncated Wiener-Hopf type. Akhiezer-Kac asymptotic results for the Fredholm Pfaffians are then derived as natural consequences of the Riemann-Hilbert characterisation.

Asymptotic analysis of a Family of Painlev\'e Functions with Applications to CUE Derivative Moments

The Riemann-Hilbert method is employed to carry out an asymptotic analysis of a family of $\sigma$-Painlev\'e V functions associated with Hankel determinants involving the confluent hypergeometric function of the second kind. In the large-matrix limit, this family degenerates to a family of $\sigma$-Painlev\'e III$'$ functions, whose precise asymptotic behavior is also obtained. Both families of Painlev\'e functions arise in the study of the joint moments of the derivative of the characteristic polynomial of a CUE random matrix and the polynomial itself, whose asymptotics are closely related to the moments of the Riemann zeta function and the Hardy $\mathsf{Z}$-function on the critical line. One of our main results establishes a representation of the leading coefficients of these joint moments in terms of $\sigma$-Painlev\'e III$'$ functions for general real exponents. The other main result resolves a question of Assiotis et al. in [Probab. Math. Physics. 2(2021), 613-642, Remark 2.5] concerning the existence of a probability density for a random variable arising in the ergodic decomposition of Hua-Pickrell measures.

Universality for random matrices with an edge spectrum singularity

We study invariant random matrix ensembles \begin{equation*} \mathbb{P}_n(d M)=Z_n^{-1}\exp(-n\,tr(V(M)))\,d M \end{equation*} defined on complex Hermitian matrices $M$ of size $n\times n$, where $V$ is real analytic such that the underlying density of states is one-cut regular. Considering the average \begin{equation*} E_n[\phi;\lambda,\alpha,\beta]:=\mathbb{E}_n\bigg(\prod_{\ell=1}^n\big(1-\phi(\lambda_{\ell}(M))\big)\omega_{\alpha\beta}(\lambda_{\ell}(M)-\lambda)\bigg),\ \ \ \ \ \omega_{\alpha\beta}(x):=|x|^{\alpha}\begin{cases}1,&x<0\\ \beta,&x\geq 0\end{cases}, \end{equation*} taken with respect to the above law and where $\phi$ is a suitable test function, we evaluate its large-$n$ asymptotic assuming that $\lambda$ lies within the soft edge boundary layer, and $(\alpha,\beta)\in\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{C}$ satisfy $\alpha>-1,\beta\notin(-\infty,0)$. Our results are obtained by using Riemann-Hilbert problems for orthogonal polynomials and integrable operators and they extend previous results of Forrester and Witte \cite{FW} that were obtained by an application of Okamoto's $\tau$-function theory. A key role throughout is played by distinguished solutions to the Painlev\'e-XXXIV equation.

The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble at weak non-Hermiticity: bulk spacing distributions

We show that the distribution of bulk spacings between pairs of adjacent eigenvalue real parts of a random matrix drawn from the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble is asymptotically given by a generalization of the Gaudin-Mehta distribution, in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. The same generalization is expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlev\'e function and it is shown that the generalized Gaudin-Mehta distribution describes the crossover, with increasing degree of non-Hermiticity, from Gaudin-Mehta nearest-neighbor bulk statistics in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble to Poisson gap statistics for eigenvalue real parts in the bulk of the Complex Ginibre Ensemble.

The complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble at weak non-Hermiticity: edge spacing distributions

The focus of this paper is on the distribution function of the rightmost eigenvalue for the complex elliptic Ginibre ensemble in the limit of weak non-Hermiticity. We show how the limiting distribution function can be expressed in terms of an integro-differential Painlev\'e-II function and how the same captures the non-trivial transition between Poisson and Airy point process extreme value statistics as the degree of non-Hermiticity decreases. Our most explicit new results concern the tail asymptotics of the limiting distribution function. For the right tail we compute the leading order asymptotics uniformly in the degree of non-Hermiticity, for the left tail we compute it close to Hermiticity.

A Riemann-Hilbert approach to Fredholm determinants of Hankel composition operators: scalar-valued kernels

We characterize Fredholm determinants of a class of Hankel composition operators via matrix-valued Riemann-Hilbert problems, for additive and multiplicative compositions. The scalar-valued kernels of the underlying integral operators are not assumed to display the integrable structure known from the seminal work of Its, Izergin, Korepin and Slavnov \cite{IIKS}. Yet we are able to describe the corresponding Fredholm determinants through a naturally associated Riemann-Hilbert problem of Zakharov-Shabat type by solely exploiting the kernels' Hankel composition structures. We showcase the efficiency of this approach through a series of examples, we then compute several rank one perturbed determinants in terms of Riemann-Hilbert data and finally derive Akhiezer-Kac asymptotic theorems for suitable kernel classes.

Momenta spacing distributions in anharmonic oscillators and the higher order finite temperature Airy kernel

We rigorously compute the integrable system for the limiting $(N\rightarrow\infty)$ distribution function of the extreme momentum of $N$ noninteracting fermions when confined to an anharmonic trap $V(q)=q^{2n}$ for $n\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 1}$ at positive temperature. More precisely, the edge momentum statistics in the harmonic trap $n=1$ are known to obey the weak asymmetric KPZ crossover law which is realized via the finite temperature Airy kernel determinant or equivalently via a Painlev\'e-II integro-differential transcendent, cf. \cite{LW,ACQ}. For general $n\geq 2$, a novel higher order finite temperature Airy kernel has recently emerged in physics literature \cite{DMS} and we show that the corresponding edge law in momentum space is now governed by a distinguished Painlev\'e-II integro-differential hierarchy. Our analysis is based on operator-valued Riemann-Hilbert techniques which produce a Lax pair for an operator-valued Painlev\'e-II ODE system that naturally encodes the aforementioned hierarchy. As byproduct, we establish a connection of the integro-differential Painlev\'e-II hierarchy to a novel integro-differential mKdV hierarchy.

Edge distribution of thinned real eigenvalues in the real Ginibre ensemble

This paper is concerned with the explicit computation of the limiting distribution function of the largest real eigenvalue in the real Ginibre ensemble when each real eigenvalue has been removed independently with constant likelihood. We show that the recently discovered integrable structures in \cite{BB} generalize from the real Ginibre ensemble to its thinned equivalent. Concretely, we express the aforementioned limiting distribution function as a convex combination of two simple Fredholm determinants and connect the same function to the inverse scattering theory of the Zakharov-Shabat system. As corollaries, we provide a Zakharov-Shabat evaluation of the ensemble's real eigenvalue generating function and obtain precise control over the limiting distribution function's tails. The latter part includes the explicit computation of the usually difficult constant factors.

On the origins of Riemann-Hilbert problems in mathematics

This article is firstly a historic review of the theory of Riemann-Hilbert problems with particular emphasis placed on their original appearance in the context of Hilbert's 21st problem and Plemelj's work associated with it. The secondary purpose of this note is to invite a new generation of mathematicians to the fascinating world of Riemann-Hilbert techniques and their modern appearances in nonlinear mathematical physics. We set out to achieve this goal with six examples, including a new proof of the integro-differential Painlev\'e-II formula of Amir, Corwin, Quastel \cite{ACQ} that enters in the description of the KPZ crossover distribution. Parts of this text are based on the author's plenary lecture at the $15$th International Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials, Special Functions and Applications (OPSFA) in Hagenberg, Austria.

Short distance asymptotics for a generalized two-point scaling function in the two-dimensional Ising model

In the 1977 paper \cite{MTW} of B. McCoy, C. Tracy and T. Wu it was shown that the limiting two-point correlation function in the two-dimensional Ising model is related to a second order nonlinear Painlev\'e function. This result identified the scaling function as a tau-function and the corresponding connection problem was solved by C. Tracy in 1991 \cite{T}, see also the works by C. Tracy and H. Widom in 1998 \cite{TW}. Here we present the solution to a certain generalized version of the above connection problem which is obtained through a refinement of the techniques in \cite{B}.

The largest real eigenvalue in the real Ginibre ensemble and its relation to the Zakharov-Shabat system

The real Ginibre ensemble consists of $n\times n$ real matrices ${\bf X}$ whose entries are i.i.d. standard normal random variables. In sharp contrast to the complex and quaternion Ginibre ensemble, real eigenvalues in the real Ginibre ensemble attain positive likelihood. In turn, the spectral radius $R_n=\max_{1\leq j\leq n}|z_j({\bf X})|$ of the eigenvalues $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{C}$ of a real Ginibre matrix ${\bf X}$ follows a different limiting law (as $n\rightarrow\infty$) for $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{R}$ than for $z_j({\bf X})\in\mathbb{C}\setminus\mathbb{R}$. Building on previous work by Rider, Sinclair \cite{RS} and Poplavskyi, Tribe, Zaboronski \cite{PTZ}, we show that the limiting distribution of $\max_{j:z_j\in\mathbb{R}}z_j({\bf X})$ admits a closed form expression in terms of a distinguished solution to an inverse scattering problem for the Zakharov-Shabat system. As byproducts of our analysis we also obtain a new determinantal representation for the limiting distribution of $\max_{j:z_j\in\mathbb{R}}z_j({\bf X})$ and extend recent tail estimates in \cite{PTZ} via nonlinear steepest descent techniques.

Rational Solutions of the Painlev\'e-III Equation: Large Parameter Asymptotics

The Painlev\'e-III equation with parameters $\Theta_0=n+m$ and $\Theta_\infty=m-n+1$ has a unique rational solution $u(x)=u_n(x;m)$ with $u_n(\infty;m)=1$ whenever $n\in\mathbb{Z}$. Using a Riemann-Hilbert representation proposed in \cite{BothnerMS18}, we study the asymptotic behavior of $u_n(x;m)$ in the limit $n\to+\infty$ with $m\in\mathbb{C}$ held fixed. We isolate an eye-shaped domain $E$ in the $y=n^{-1}x$ plane that asymptotically confines the poles and zeros of $u_n(x;m)$ for all values of the second parameter $m$. We then show that unless $m$ is a half-integer, the interior of $E$ is filled with a locally uniform lattice of poles and zeros, and the density of the poles and zeros is small near the boundary of $E$ but blows up near the origin, which is the only fixed singularity of the Painlev\'e-III equation. In both the interior and exterior domains we provide accurate asymptotic formul\ae\ for $u_n(x;m)$ that we compare with $u_n(x;m)$ itself for finite values of $n$ to illustrate their accuracy. We also consider the exceptional cases where $m$ is a half-integer, showing that the poles and zeros of $u_n(x;m)$ now accumulate along only one or the other of two "eyebrows", i.e., exterior boundary arcs of $E$.

The sine process under the influence of a varying potential

We review the authors' recent work \cite{BDIK1,BDIK2,BDIK3} where we obtain the uniform large $s$ asymptotics for the Fredholm determinant $D(s,\gamma):=\det(I-\gamma K_s\upharpoonright_{L^2(-1,1)})$, $0\leq\gamma\leq 1$. The operator $K_s$ acts with kernel $K_s(x,y)=\sin(s(x-y))/(\pi(x-y))$ and $D(s,\gamma)$ appears for instance in Dyson's model \cite{Dyson2} of a Coulomb log-gas with varying external potential or in the bulk scaling analysis of the thinned GUE \cite{BP}.

Rational Solutions of the Painlev\'e-III Equation

All of the six Painlev\'e equations except the first have families of rational solutions, which are frequently important in applications. The third Painlev\'e equation in generic form depends on two parameters $m$ and $n$, and it has rational solutions if and only if at least one of the parameters is an integer. We use known algebraic representations of the solutions to study numerically how the distributions of poles and zeros behave as $n\in\mathbb{Z}$ increases and how the patterns vary with $m\in\mathbb{C}$. This study suggests that it is reasonable to consider the rational solutions in the limit of large $n\in\mathbb{Z}$ with $m\in\mathbb{C}$ being an auxiliary parameter. To analyze the rational solutions in this limit, algebraic techniques need to be supplemented by analytical ones, and the main new contribution of this paper is to develop a Riemann-Hilbert representation of the rational solutions of Painlev\'e-III that is amenable to asymptotic analysis. Assuming further that $m$ is a half-integer, we derive from the Riemann-Hilbert representation a finite dimensional Hankel system for the rational solution in which $n\in\mathbb{Z}$ appears as an explicit parameter.

A short note on the scaling function constant problem in the two-dimensional Ising model

We provide a simple derivation of the constant factor in the short-distance asymptotics of the tau-function associated with the $2$-point function of the two-dimensional Ising model. This factor was first computed by C. Tracy in \cite{T} via an exponential series expansion of the correlation function. Further simplifications in the analysis are due to Tracy and Widom \cite{TW} using Fredholm determinant representations of the correlation function and Wiener-Hopf approximation results for the underlying resolvent operator. Our method relies on an action integral representation of the tau-function and asymptotic results for the underlying Painlev\'e-III transcendent from \cite{MTW}.

On the analysis of incomplete spectra in random matrix theory through an extension of the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential

Several distribution functions in the classical unitarily invariant matrix ensembles are prime examples of isomonodromic tau functions as introduced by Jimbo, Miwa and Ueno (JMU) in the early 1980s \cite{JMU}. Recent advances in the theory of tau functions \cite{ILP}, based on earlier works of B. Malgrange and M. Bertola, have allowed to extend the original Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno differential form to a 1-form closed on the full space of extended monodromy data of the underlying Lax pairs. This in turn has yielded a novel approach for the asymptotic evaluation of isomonodromic tau functions, including the exact computation of all relevant constant factors. We use this method to efficiently compute the tail asymptotics of soft-edge, hard-edge and bulk scaled distribution and gap functions in the complex Wishart ensemble, provided each eigenvalue particle has been removed independently with probability $1-\gamma\in(0,1]$.

Large deformations of the Tracy-Widom distribution I. Non-oscillatory asymptotics

We analyze the left-tail asymptotics of deformed Tracy-Widom distribution functions describing the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue in invariant random matrix ensembles after removing each soft edge eigenvalue independently with probability $1-\gamma\in[0,1]$. As $\gamma$ varies, a transition from Tracy-Widom statistics ($\gamma=1$) to classical Weibull statistics ($\gamma=0$) was observed in the physics literature by Bohigas, de Carvalho, and Pato \cite{BohigasCP:2009}. We provide a description of this transition by rigorously computing the leading-order left-tail asymptotics of the thinned GOE, GUE and GSE Tracy-Widom distributions. In this paper, we obtain the asymptotic behavior in the non-oscillatory region with $\gamma\in[0,1)$ fixed (for the GOE, GUE, and GSE distributions) and $\gamma\uparrow 1$ at a controlled rate (for the GUE distribution). This is the first step in an ongoing program to completely describe the transition between Tracy-Widom and Weibull statistics. As a corollary to our results, we obtain a new total-integral formula involving the Ablowitz-Segur solution to the second Painlev\'e equation.
