A simple construction of Heat Kernels and conformal anomalies via Fedosov deformation quantization

We propose a new approach to the systematic computation of the heat-kernel expansion and, in particular, of conformal anomalies, based on Fedosov deformation quantization. The approach is fully covariant, applies to differential operators of arbitrary order, is amenable to efficient implementation, and yields closed-form expressions. As applications, we compute conformal anomalies in four, six, and eight dimensions, the last being a new result.

Spinor-helicity formalism for continuous-spin particles

We propose a new formulation of continuous-spin particles (CSP) with the help of a single two-component spinor to build asymptotic states. This formulation allows to write down amplitudes in a straightforward way, similar to the massless spinor-helicity approach. The helicity states naturally emerge upon decomposing into components of a fixed homogeneity degree. We show that CSP amplitudes can be understood as the infinite-spin limit of amplitudes of massive particles and, similarly to the scattering of black holes, a certain universal factor exponentiates. In analogy with the recent discovery of collinear amplitudes in self-dual theories, we find nontrivial CSP collinear amplitudes where the collinear fractions are constrained by the dimensionful parameter characterising the various continuous-spin particles.

Closed string trajectories from a new "tiling"

Based on an efficient technology for the excavation of entire open string trajectories of physical states, we propose an algorithmic method of constructing the largely unknown closed string trajectories. Due to combinatorial complexity, the "double copy" of open strings is limited in efficiency as a means of building closed string trajectories. We bypass this technical difficulty by employing one open string as the fundamental seed and then dressing it by a suitable selection of generators of a symplectic algebra that acts on both the left and the right sector. By applying Howe duality, the dressed seeds amount to closed string trajectory candidates, finding the physical subset of which is possible by solving systems of equations involving Diophantine-like recursion relations, which we also illustrate with examples.

Multisymplectic AKSZ sigma models

The Alexandrov-Kontsevich-Schwarz-Zaboronsky (AKSZ) construction encodes all the data of a topological sigma-model in the finite-dimensional symplectic $Q$-manifold. Relaxing the nondegeneracy condition i.e. considering a presymplectic form instead, extends the construction to non-topological models. The gauge-invariant action functional of (presymplectic) AKSZ sigma model is written in terms of space-time differential forms and can be seen as a covariant multidimensional analogue of the usual 1st order Hamiltonian action. In this work, we show that the AKSZ construction has a natural generalisation where the target space $Q$-manifold is equipped with a form of arbitrary degree $\Omega$ (possibly inhomogeneous) which is $(\mathrm{d}+L_Q)$-closed. This data defines a higher-derivative generalisation of the AKSZ action which is still invariant under the natural gauge transformations determined by $Q$ and which is efficiently formulated in terms of a version of Chern-Weil map introduced by Kotov and Strobl. It turns out that a variety of interesting gauge theories, including higher-dimensional Chern-Simons theory, MacDowell-Mansouri-Stelle-West action and self-dual gravity as well as its higher spin extension, can be concisely reformulated as such multisymplectic AKSZ models. We also present a version of the construction in the setup of PDE geometry and demonstrate that the counterpart of the multisymplectic AKSZ action is precisely the standard multisymplectic formulation, where the Chern-Weil map corresponds to the usual pullback map.

Reframing classical mechanics: An AKSZ sigma model perspective

The path-integral re-formulation due to E. Gozzi, M. Regini, M. Reuter and W. D. Thacker of Koopman and von Neumann's original operator formulation of a classical Hamiltonian system on a symplectic manifold $M$ is identified as a gauge slice of a one-dimensional Alexandrov--Kontsevich--Schwarz--Zaboronsky sigma model with target $T^\ast(T[1]M\times \mathbb{R}[1])$.

Supersymmetric Poisson and Poisson-supersymmetric sigma models

We revisit and construct new examples of supersymmetric 2D topological sigma models whose target space is a Poisson supermanifold. Inspired by the AKSZ construction of topological field theories, we follow a graded-geometric approach and identify two commuting homological vector fields compatible with the graded symplectic structure, which control the gauge symmetries and the supersymmetries of the sigma models. Exemplifying the general structure, we show that two distinguished cases exist, one being the differential Poisson sigma model constructed before by Arias, Boulanger, Sundell and Torres-Gomez and the other a contravariant differential Poisson sigma model. The new model features nonlinear supersymmetry transformations that are generated by the Poisson structure on the body of the target supermanifold, giving rise to a Poisson supersymmetry. Further examples are characterised by supersymmetry transformations controlled by the anchor map of a Lie algebroid, when this map is invertible, in which case we determine the geometric conditions for invariance under supersymmetry and closure of the supersymmetry algebra. Moreover, we show that the common thread through this type of models is that their supersymmetry-generating vector field is the coadjoint representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid.

Scalar Field on a higher-spin Background via Fedosov quantization

Conformal higher-spin gravity is the log-divergent part of the effective action of the scalar field coupled to background fields via higher-spin currents, as was defined by Segal and Tseytlin, which can be worked out over the flat space background. We revisit the problem of the scalar field in a higher-spin background and propose a manifestly covariant version thereof. The construction utilizes the Fedosov quantization of the cotangent bundle and the action is written with the help of the trace on a curved phase space that is provided by the Feigin--Felder--Shoikhet cocycle. The same construction allows one to formulate quantum mechanics on a curved space, the phase space being the cotangent bundle.

Massless chiral fields in six dimensions

Massless chiral fields of arbitrary spin in six spacetime dimensions, also known as higher spin singletons, admit a simple formulation in terms of $SU^*(4) \cong SL(2,\mathbb{H})$ tensors. We show that, paralleling the four-dimensional case, these fields can be described using a $0$-form and a gauge $2$-form, taking values in totally symmetric tensors of $SU^*(4)$. We then exhibit an example of interacting theory that couples a tower of singletons of all integer spin to a background of $\mathfrak{g}$-valued higher spin fields, for $\mathfrak{g}$ an arbitrary Lie algebra equipped with an invariant symmetric bilinear form. Finally, we discuss the formulation of these models in arbitrary even dimensions, as well as their partially-massless counterpart.

Partially-massless higher spin algebras in four dimensions

We propose a realisation of partially-massless higher spin algebras in four dimensions in terms of bosonic and fermionic oscillators, using Howe duality between $sp(4,\mathbb R) \cong so(2,3)$ and $osp(1|2(\ell-1), \mathbb R)$. More precisely, we show that the centraliser of $osp(1|2(\ell-1),\mathbb R)$ in the Weyl--Clifford algebra generated by $4$ bosonic and $8(\ell-1)$ fermionic symbols, modulo $osp(1|2(\ell-1),\mathbb R)$ generators, is isomorphic to the higher spin algebra of the type-A$_\ell$ theory whose spectrum contains partially-massless fields of all spins and depths $t=1,3,\dots,2\ell-1$. We also discuss the possible existence of a deformation of this algebra, which would encode interaction for the type-A$_\ell$ theory.

On the deep superstring spectrum

We propose a covariant method of constructing entire trajectories of physical states in superstring theory in the critical dimension. It is inspired by a recently developed covariant technology of excavating bosonic string trajectories, that is facilitated by the observation that the Virasoro constraints can be written as linear combinations of lowering operators of a bigger algebra, namely a symplectic algebra, which is Howe dual to the spacetime Lorentz algebra. For superstrings, it is the orthosymplectic algebra that appears instead, with its lowest weight states forming the simplest class of physical trajectories in the NS sector. To construct the simplest class in the R sector, the lowest weight states need to be supplemented with other states, which we determine. Deeper trajectories are then constructed by acting with suitable combinations of the raising operators of the orthosymplectic algebra, which we illustrate with several examples.

Spinor-helicity representations of (A)dS$_4$ particles of any mass

The spinor-helicity representations of massive and (partially-)massless particles in four dimensional (Anti-) de Sitter spacetime are studied within the framework of the dual pair correspondence. We show that the dual groups (aka "little groups") of the AdS and dS groups are respectively $O(2N)$ and $O^*(2N)$. For $N=1$, the generator of the dual algebra $\mathfrak{so}(2)\cong \mathfrak{so}^*(2) \cong \mathfrak{u}(1)$ corresponds to the helicity operator, and the spinor-helicity representation describes massless particles in (A)dS$_4$. For $N=2$, the dual algebra is composed of two ideals, $\mathfrak{s}$ and $\mathfrak{m}_\Lambda$. The former ideal $\mathfrak{s}\cong \mathfrak{so}(3)$ fixes the spin of the particle, while the mass is determined by the latter ideal $\mathfrak{m}_\Lambda$, which is isomorphic to $\mathfrak{so}(2,1)$, $\mathfrak{iso}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{so}(3)$ depending on the cosmological constant being positive, zero or negative. In the case of a positive cosmological constant, namely dS$_4$, the spinor-helicity representation contains all massive particles corresponding to the principal series representations and the partially-massless particles corresponding to the discrete series representations leaving out only the light massive particles corresponding to the complementary series representations. The zero and negative cosmological constant cases, which had been addressed in earlier references, are also discussed briefly. Finally, we consider the multilinear form of helicity spinors invariant under (A)dS group, which can be served for the (A)dS counterpart of the scattering amplitude, and discuss technical differences and difficulties of the (A)dS cases compared to the flat spacetime case.

Manifestly Covariant Worldline Actions from Coadjoint Orbits. Part I: Generalities and Vectorial Descriptions

We derive manifestly covariant actions of spinning particles starting from coadjoint orbits of isometry groups, by using Hamiltonian reductions. We show that the defining conditions of a classical Lie group can be treated as Hamiltonian constraints which generate the coadjoint orbits of another, dual, Lie group. In case of (inhomogeneous) orthogonal groups, the dual groups are (centrally-extended inhomogeneous) symplectic groups. This defines a symplectic dual pair correspondence between the coadjoint orbits of the isometry group and those of the dual Lie group, whose quantum version is the reductive dual pair correspondence \`a la Howe. We show explicitly how various particle species arise from the classification of coadjoint orbits of Poincar\'e and (A)dS symmetry. In the Poincar\'e case, we recover the data of the Wigner classification, which includes continuous spin particles, (spinning) tachyons and null particles with vanishing momenta, besides the usual massive and massless spinning particles. In (A)dS case, our classification results are not only consistent with the pattern of the corresponding unitary irreducible representations observed in the literature, but also contain novel information. In dS, we find the presence of partially massless spinning particles, but continuous spin particles, spinning tachyons and null particles are absent. The AdS case shows the largest diversity of particle species. It has all particles species of Poincar\'e symmetry except for the null particle, but allows in addition various exotic entities such as one parameter extension of continuous particles and conformal particles living on the boundary of AdS. Notably, we also find a large class of particles living in "bitemporal" AdS space, including ones where mass and spin play an interchanged role. We also discuss the relative inclusion structure of the corresponding orbits.

Covariant action for conformal higher spin gravity

Conformal Higher Spin Gravity is a higher spin extension of Weyl gravity and is a family of local higher spin theories, which was put forward by Segal and Tseytlin. We propose a manifestly covariant and coordinate-independent action for these theories. The result is based on an interplay between higher spin symmetries and deformation quantization: a locally equivalent but manifestly background-independent reformulation, known as the parent system, of the off-shell multiplet of conformal higher spin fields (Fradkin-Tseytlin fields) can be interpreted in terms of Fedosov deformation quantization of the underlying cotangent bundle. This brings into the game the invariant quantum trace, induced by the Feigin-Felder-Shoikhet cocycle of Weyl algebra, which extends Segal's action into a gauge invariant and globally well-defined action functional on the space of configurations of the parent system. The same action can be understood within the worldline approach as a correlation function in the topological quantum mechanics on the circle.

Chiral approach to partially-massless fields

We propose a new (chiral) description of partially-massless fields in $4d$, including the partially-massless graviton, that is similar to the pure connection formulation for gravity and massless higher spin fields, the latter having a clear twistor origin. The new approach allows us to construct complete examples of higher spin gravities with (partially-)massless fields that feature Yang--Mills and current interactions.

Categories enriched over oplax monoidal categories

We define a notion of category enriched over an oplax monoidal category $V$, extending the usual definition of category enriched over a monoidal category. Even though oplax monoidal structures involve infinitely many functors $V^n\to V$, defining categories enriched over $V$ only requires the lower arity maps $(n \leq 3)$, similarly to the monoidal case. The focal point of the enrichment theory shifts, in the oplax case, from the notion of $V$-category (given by collections of objects and hom-objects together with composition and unit maps) to the one of categories enriched over $V$ (genuine categories equipped with additional structures). One of the merits of the notion of categories enriched over $V$ is that it becomes straightforward to define enriched functors and natural transformations. We show moreover that the resulting 2-category $\mathsf{Cat}_V$ can be put in correspondence (via the theory of distributors) with the 2-category of modules over $V$. We give an example of such an enriched category in the framework of operads: every cocomplete symmetric monoidal category $C$ is enriched over the category of sequences in $C$ endowed with an oplax monoidal structure stemming from the usual operadic composition product, whose monoids are still the operads. As an application of the study of the 2-functor $V\mapsto\mathsf{Cat}_V$, we show that when $V$ is also endowed with a compatible lax monoidal structure - thus forming a lax-oplax duoidal category - the 2-category $\mathsf{Cat}_V$ inherits a lax 2-monoidal structure, thereby generalising the corresponding result when the enrichment base is a braided monoidal category. We illustrate this result by discussing the lax-oplax structure on the category of $(R^\mathrm{e}, R^\mathrm{e})$-bimodules, whose bimonoids are the bialgebroids. We also comment on the relations with other enrichment theories (monoidal, multicategories, skew and lax).

Dual Pair Correspondence in Physics: Oscillator Realizations and Representations

We study general aspects of the reductive dual pair correspondence, also known as Howe duality. We make an explicit and systematic treatment, where we first derive the oscillator realizations of all irreducible dual pairs: $(GL(M,\mathbb R), GL(N,\mathbb R))$, $(GL(M,\mathbb C), GL(N,\mathbb C))$, $(U^*(2M), U^*(2N))$, $(U(M_+,M_-), U(N_+,N_-))$, $(O(N_+,N_-),Sp(2M,\mathbb R))$, $(O(N,\mathbb C), Sp(2M,\mathbb C))$ and $(O^*(2N), Sp(M_+,M_-))$. Then, we decompose the Fock space into irreducible representations of each group in the dual pairs for the cases where one member of the pair is compact as well as the first non-trivial cases of where it is non-compact. We discuss the relevance of these representations in several physical applications throughout this analysis. In particular, we discuss peculiarities of their branching properties. Finally, closed-form expressions relating all Casimir operators of two groups in a pair are established.

A note on Faddeev--Popov action for doubled-yet-gauged particle and graded Poisson geometry

The section condition of Double Field Theory has been argued to mean that doubled coordinates are gauged: a gauge orbit represents a single physical point. In this note, we consider a doubled and at the same time gauged particle action, and show that its BRST formulation including Faddeev--Popov ghosts matches with the graded Poisson geometry that has been recently used to describe the symmetries of Double Field Theory. Besides, by requiring target spacetime diffeomorphisms at the quantum level, we derive quantum corrections to the classical action involving dilaton, which might be comparable with the Fradkin--Tseytlin term on string worldsheet.

Conformal Higher-Spin Gravity: Linearized Spectrum = Symmetry Algebra

The linearized spectrum and the algebra of global symmetries of conformal higher-spin gravity decompose into infinitely many representations of the conformal algebra. Their characters involve divergent sums over spins. We propose a suitable regularization adapted to their evaluation and observe that their characters are actually equal. This result holds in the case of type-A and type-B (and their higher-depth generalizations) theories and confirms previous observations on a remarkable rearrangement of dynamical degrees of freedom in conformal higher-spin gravity after regularization.
