A nonlocal isoperimetric problem with dipolar repulsion

We study a geometric variational problem for sets in the plane in which the perimeter and a regularized dipolar interaction compete under a mass constraint. In contrast to previously studied nonlocal isoperimetric problems, here the nonlocal term asymptotically localizes and contributes to the perimeter term to leading order. We establish existence of generalized minimizers for all values of the dipolar strength, mass and regularization cutoff and give conditions for existence of classical minimizers. For subcritical dipolar strengths we prove that the limiting functional is a renormalized perimeter and that for small cutoff lengths all mass-constrained minimizers are disks. For critical dipolar strength, we identify the next-order $\Gamma$-limit when sending the cutoff length to zero and prove that with a slight modification of the dipolar kernel there exist masses for which classical minimizers are not disks.

Rigidity of branching microstructures in shape memory alloys

We analyze generic sequences for which the geometrically linear energy \[E_\eta(u,\chi):= \eta^{-\frac{2}{3}}\int_{B_{0}(1)} \left| e(u)- \sum_{i=1}^3 \chi_ie_i\right|^2 d x+\eta^\frac{1}{3} \sum_{i=1}^3 |D\chi_i|(B_{0}(1))\] remains bounded in the limit $\eta \to 0$. Here $ e(u) :=1/2(Du + Du^T)$ is the (linearized) strain of the displacement $u$, the strains $e_i$ correspond to the martensite strains of a shape memory alloy undergoing cubic-to-tetragonal transformations and $\chi_i:B_{0}(1) \to \{0,1\}$ is the partition into phases. In this regime it is known that in addition to simple laminates also branched structures are possible, which if austenite was present would enable the alloy to form habit planes. In an ansatz-free manner we prove that the alignment of macroscopic interfaces between martensite twins is as predicted by well-known rank-one conditions. Our proof proceeds via the non-convex, non-discrete-valued differential inclusion \[e(u) \in \bigcup_{1\leq i\neq j\leq 3} \operatorname{conv} \{e_i,e_j\}\] satisfied by the weak limits of bounded energy sequences and of which we classify all solutions. In particular, there exist no convex integration solutions of the inclusion with complicated geometric structures.

Convergence of the Allen-Cahn Equation to multi-phase mean-curvature flow

We present a convergence result for solutions of the vector-valued Allen-Cahn Equation. In the spirit of the work of Luckhaus and Sturzenhecker we establish convergence towards a distributional formulation of multi-phase mean-curvature flow using sets of finite perimeter. Like their result, ours relies on the assumption that the time-integrated energies of the approximations converge to those of the limit. Furthermore, we apply our proof to two variants of the equation, incorporating external forces and a volume constraint.
