Mixing sequences for non-mixing transformations and group actions

We establish that there are non-mixing maps that are mixing on appropriate sequences including sequences $(s_i)$ which satisfy the Rajchman dissociated property. Our examples are based on the staircase rank one construction, $M$-towers constructions and the Gaussian transformations. As a consequence, we obtain there are non-mixing maps which are mixing along the squares. We further prove that a sequence $M=(m_n)$ is a mixing sequence for some weak mixing ${1}/{2}$-rigid transformation $T$ if and only if the complement of $M$ is a thick set. This result is generalized to ${r}/{(r+1)}$-rigid transformations for $r\in \mathbb{N}$. Moreover, by applying Host-Parreau characterization of the set of continuity from Harmonic Analysis, we extend our results to the infinite countable abelian group actions.

Genericity and Rigidity for Slow Entropy Transformations

The notion of slow entropy, both upper and lower slow entropy, was defined by Katok and Thouvenot as a more refined measure of complexity for dynamical systems, than the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. For any subexponential rate function $a_n(t)$, we prove there exists a generic class of invertible measure preserving systems such that the lower slow entropy is zero and the upper slow entropy is infinite. Also, given any subexponential rate $a_n(t)$, we show there exists a rigid, weak mixing, invertible system such that the lower slow entropy is infinite with respect to $a_n(t)$. This gives a general solution to a question on the existence of rigid transformations with positive polynomial upper slow entropy, Finally, we connect slow entropy with the notion of entropy covergence rate presented by Blume. In particular, we show slow entropy is a strictly stronger notion of complexity and give examples which have zero upper slow entropy, but also have an arbitrary sublinear positive entropy convergence rate.

Under- and over-independence in measure preserving systems

We introduce the notions of over- and under-independence for weakly mixing and (free) ergodic measure preserving actions and establish new results which complement and extend the theorems obtained in [BoFW] and [A]. Here is a sample of results obtained in this paper: $\cdot$ (Existence of density-1 UI and OI set) Let $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu,T)$ be an invertible probability measure preserving weakly mixing system. Then for any $d\in\mathbb{N}$, any non-constant integer-valued polynomials $p_{1},p_{2},\dots,p_{d}$ such that $p_{i}-p_{j}$ are also non-constant for all $i\neq j$, (i) there is $A\in\mathcal{B}$ such that the set $$\{n\in\mathbb{N}\colon\mu(A\cap T^{p_{1}(n)}A\cap\dots\cap T^{p_{d}(n)}A)<\mu(A)^{d+1}\}$$ is of density 1. (ii) there is $A\in\mathcal{B}$ such that the set $$\{n\in\mathbb{N}\colon\mu(A\cap T^{p_{1}(n)}A\cap\dots\cap T^{p_{d}(n)}A)>\mu(A)^{d+1}\}$$ is of density 1. $\cdot$ (Existence of Ces\`aro OI set) Let $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu,T)$ be a free, invertible, ergodic probability measure preserving system and $M\in\mathbb{N}$. %Suppose that $X$ contains an ergodic component which is aperiodic. Then there is $A\in\mathcal{B}$ such that $$\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=M}^{N+M-1}\mu(A\cap T^{n}A)>\mu(A)^{2}$$ for all $N\in\mathbb{N}$. $\cdot$ (Nonexistence of Ces\`aro UI set) Let $(X,\mathcal{B},\mu,T)$ be an invertible probability measure preserving system. For any measurable set $A$ satisfying $\mu(A) \in (0,1)$, there exist infinitely many $N \in \mathbb{N}$ such that $$\frac{1}{N} \sum_{n=0}^{N-1} \mu ( A \cap T^{n}A) > \mu(A)^2.$$

Joint coboundaries

We ask under what conditions on the function $f$, and a set of maps $\mathcal T$, it is the case that $f$ is a coboundary for some map in $\mathcal T$. We also consider for a function $f$, and a set of maps $\mathcal T$, when we have $f$ being a coboundary for all the maps in $\mathcal T$.
