Pair correlations of the hybridized orbitals in a ladder model for the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

To clarify the nature of high-temperature superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ under pressure, we investigate, using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the pair correlations in the two-orbital $t$-$J$ ladder model. While the interchain-intraorbital pair correlations exhibit a slow power-law decay in both orbitals, the interorbital pair correlation also develops strongly enough to be comparable with the intraorbital correlations. These intra and interorbital pair correlations are enhanced by Hund's coupling, but more importantly, the interorbital pair correlation develops even when interorbital pairing glue mediated by Hund's coupling is absent. Our finding suggests that the pair correlation in the present system develops as a hybridized two-orbital entity, which may have some implications on the superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate.

Photoinduced $η$-pairing correlation in the Hubbard ladder

We investigate the staggered correlation of the on-site pairs, the so-called $η$-pairing correlation, induced by pump electric fields in the Hubbard model on the ladder lattice. Employing the time-evolution method based on exact diagonalization, we compute the photoinduced $η$-pairing correlation with different strengths of the interchain hopping. When the pump field is polarized along the chain direction, the $η$-pairing correlation is noticeably induced in the weakly coupled double-chain region, where the pairing property is similar to the $η$ pairing in the single-chain Hubbard model. On the other hand, the pump field polarized along the rung direction prominently induces the $η$-pairing correlation in the strong interchain coupling regime, where the pair correlations developing across rungs strongly contribute to the $η$ pairing. Based on the local rung approximation, which is valid in the strong interchain coupling regime, we discuss the origin of the photoinduced pair.

Pair correlations in the two-orbital Hubbard ladder: Implications on superconductivity in the bilayer nickelate La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$

Motivated by high-temperature superconductivity in pressurized La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, we investigate the pair correlations in the two-orbital Hubbard ladder, which consists of the nearly half-filled and nearly quarter-filled orbitals. By employing the density matrix renormalization group method, we demonstrate that the pair correlation exhibits a power-law decay against the distance while the spin correlation decays exponentially. The decay exponent of the pair correlation of the nearly half-filled orbital is comparable to the exponent of the quasi-long-range superconducting correlation in the doped single-orbital Hubbard ladder, which suggests the importance of the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbital in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$.

Dynamical exciton condensates in biased electron-hole bilayers

Bilayer materials may support interlayer excitons comprised of electrons in one layer and holes in the other. In experiments, a non-zero exciton density is typically sustained by a bias chemical potential, implemented either by optical pumping or by electrical contacts connected to the two layers. We show that if charge can tunnel between the layers, the chemical potential bias means that an exciton condensate is in the dynamical regime of ac Josephson effect. It has physical consequences such as tunneling currents and the ability to tune a condensate from bright (emitting coherent photons) to dark by experimental controlling knobs. If the system is placed in an optical cavity, coupling with cavity photons favors different dynamical states depending on the bias, realizing superradiant phases.

Exciton-spin interactions in antiferromagnetic charge-transfer insulators

We derive exciton-spin interactions from a microscopic correlated model that captures important aspects of the physics of charge-transfer (CT) insulators to address magnetism associated with exciton creation. We present a minimal model consisting of coupled clusters of transition metal d and ligand p orbitals that captures the essential features of the local atomic and electronic structure. First, we identify the lowest-energy state and optically allowed excited states within a cluster by applying the molecular orbital picture to the ligand p orbitals. Then, we derive the effective interactions between two clusters mediated by intercluster hoppings, which include exciton-spin couplings. The interplay of the correlations and the spatial structure of the CT exciton leads to strong magnetic exchange couplings with spatial anisotropy. Finally, we calculate an optical excitation spectrum in our effective model to obtain insights into magnetic sidebands optically observed in magnetic materials. We demonstrate that the spin-flip excitation due to the strongly enhanced local spin interactions around the exciton gives rise to the magnetic sidebands.

Wannier-Stark ladders and Stark shifts of excitons in Mott insulators

External-field driven energy-level discretization, such as Landau quantization or Stark localization, is one of the most intriguing phenomena in quantum systems. We investigate the emergence of the Wannier-Stark ladder coming from the particle-hole continuum and the Stark shifts of the exciton levels in one-dimensional Mott insulators under the dc electric field. The discretized peak structure in the optical-conductivity spectra newly appears by applying the dc electric field, and the positions of these peaks can be reproduced from the energy levels of a simple effective model in the strong-coupling regime. Our results not only suggest that Mott insulators can serve as a viable platform for Stark discretization, but also pave the way for investigations of dynamical properties in correlated many-body systems under a dc electric field.

Spin, charge and $η$-spin separation in one-dimensional photo-doped Mott insulators

We show that effectively cold metastable states in one-dimensional photo-doped Mott insulators described by the extended Hubbard model exhibit spin, charge and $η$-spin separation. Namely, their wave functions in the large on-site Coulomb interaction limit can be expressed as $|Ψ\rangle =|Ψ_{\rm charge}\rangle|Ψ_{\rm spin}\rangle |Ψ_{\rm η-spin}\rangle$, which is analogous to the Ogata-Shiba states of the doped Hubbard model in equilibrium. Here $η$-spin represents the type of the photo-generated pseudeparticles (doublon or holon). $|Ψ_{\rm charge}\rangle$ is determined by spinless free fermions, $|Ψ_{\rm spin}\rangle$ by the isotropic Heisenberg model in the squeezed spin space, and $|Ψ_{\rm η-spin}\rangle$ by the XXZ model in the squeezed $η$-spin space. In particular, the metastable $η$-pairing and charge-density-wave (CDW) states correspond to the gapless and gapful states of the XXZ model. The specific form of the wave function allows us to accurately determine the exponents of correlation functions. The form also suggests that the central charge of the $η$-pairing state is 3 and that of the CDW phase is 2, which we numerically confirm. Our study provides analytic and intuitive insights into the correlations between active degrees of freedom in photo-doped strongly correlated systems.

Semi-Supervised Approach for Early Stuck Sign Detection in Drilling Operations

A real-time stuck pipe prediction methodology is proposed in this paper. We assume early signs of stuck pipe to be apparent when the drilling data behavior deviates from that from normal drilling operations. The definition of normalcy changes with drill string configuration or geological conditions. Here, a depth-domain data representation is adopted to capture the localized normal behavior. Several models, based on auto-encoder and variational auto-encoders, are trained on regular drilling data extracted from actual drilling data. When the trained model is applied to data sets before stuck incidents, eight incidents showed large reconstruction errors. These results suggest better performance than the previously reported supervised approach. Inter-comparison of various models reveals the robustness of our approach. The model performance depends on the featured parameter suggesting the need for multiple models in actual operation.

Excitonic effects on high-harmonic generation in Mott insulators

To study excitonic effects on high-harmonic generation (HHG) in Mott insulators, we investigate pumped nonequilibrium dynamics in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. By employing time-dependent calculations based on the exact diagonalization and infinite time-evolving block decimation methods, we find the strong enhancement of the HHG intensity around the exciton energy. The subcycle analysis in the sub-Mott-gap regime shows that the intensity region of the time-resolved spectrum around the exciton energy splits into two levels and oscillates following the driving electric field. This excitonic dynamics is qualitatively different from the dynamics of free doublon and holon but favorably contributes to HHG in the Mott insulator.

Second-order magnetic responses in quantum magnets: Magnetization under ac magnetic fields

We investigate second-order magnetic responses of quantum magnets against ac magnetic fields. We focus on the case where the $z$ component of the spin is conserved in the unperturbed Hamiltonian and the driving field is applied in the $xy$ plane. We find that linearly polarized driving fields induce a second-harmonic response, while circularly polarized fields generate only a zero-frequency response, leading to a magnetization with a direction determined by the helicity. Employing an unbiased numerical method, we demonstrate the nonlinear magnetic effect driven by the circularly polarized field in the XXZ model and show that the magnitude of the magnetization can be predicted by the dynamical spin structure factor in the linear response regime.

Third-harmonic generation in excitonic insulators

We study third-harmonic generation (THG) in an excitonic insulator (EI) described in a two-band correlated electron model. Employing the perturbative expansion with respect to the external electric field, we derive the THG susceptibility taking into account the collective dynamics of the excitonic order parameter. In the inversion-symmetric EI, the collective order parameter motion is activated at second order of the external field and its effects arise in THG. We find three peaks in the THG susceptibility at energies $\hbar Ω= Δ_g/3$, $Δ_g/2$, and $Δ_g$, where $Δ_g$ is the band gap. While the THG response at $Δ_g/3$ is caused by bare three-photon excitation of the independent particle across the band gap, the latter two peaks involve the motion of the order parameter activated at second order. The resulting resonant peaks are prominent in particular in the BCS regime but they become less significant in the BEC regime. We demonstrate that the resonant peak originated by the collective excitation is observable in the temperature profile of the THG intensity. Our study suggests that the THG measurement should be promising for detecting the excitonic collective nature of materials.

Exploring nonequilibrium phases of photo-doped Mott insulators with Generalized Gibbs ensembles

Photo-excited strongly correlated systems can exhibit intriguing non-thermal phases, but the theoretical investigation of them poses significant challenges. In this work, we introduce a generalized Gibbs ensemble type description for long-lived photo-doped states in Mott insulators. This framework enables systematic studies of photo-induced phases based on equilibrium methods, as demonstrated here for the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model. We determine the nonequilibrium phase diagram, which features $η$-pairing and charge density wave phases in a wide doping range, and reveal physical properties of these phases. We show that the peculiar kinematics of photo-doped carriers, and the interaction between them, play an essential role in the formation of the non-thermal phases, and we clarify the differences between photo-doped Mott insulators, chemically-doped Mott insulators and photo-doped semiconductors. Our results demonstrate a new path for the systematic exploration of nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems and show that photo-doped Mott insulators host different phases than conventional semiconductors.

Bulk Photovoltaic Effect Driven by Collective Excitations in a Correlated Insulator

We investigate the bulk photovoltaic effect, which rectifies light into electric current, in a collective quantum state with correlation driven electronic ferroelectricity. We show via explicit real-time dynamical calculations that the effect of the applied electric field on the electronic order parameter leads to a strong enhancement of the bulk photovoltaic effect relative to the values obtained in a conventional insulator. The enhancements include both resonant enhancements at sub-band-gap frequencies, arising from excitation of optically active collective modes, and broadband enhancements arising from nonresonant deformations of the electronic order. The deformable electronic order parameter produces an injection current contribution to the bulk photovoltaic effect that is entirely absent in a rigid-band approximation to a time-reversal symmetric material. Our findings establish that correlation effects can lead to the bulk photovoltaic effect and demonstrate that the collective behavior of ordered states can yield large nonlinear optical responses.

Second order Josephson effect in excitonic insulators

We show that in electron-hole bilayers with excitonic order arising from conduction and valence bands formed by atomic orbitals that have different parities, nonzero interlayer tunneling leads to a second order Josephson effect. This means the interlayer electrical current is related to the phase of the excitonic order parameter as $J = J_c \sin2θ$ instead of $J = J_c \sin θ$, and that the system has two degenerate ground states at $θ=0, π$ that can be switched by an interlayer voltage pulse. When generalized to a three dimensional stack of alternating electron-hole planes or a two dimensional stack of chains, AC Josephson effect implies that electric field pulses perpendicular to the layers and chains can steer the order parameter phase between the two degenerate ground states, making these devices ultrafast memories. The order parameter steering also applies to the excitonic insulator candidate Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Hybridization-gap Formation and Superconductivity in the Pressure-induced Semimetallic Phase of the Excitonic Insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$

The excitonic insulator Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$ experiences a first-order structural transition under pressure from rippled to flat layer-structure at Ps = 3 GPa, which drives the system from an almost zero-gap semiconductor to a semimetal. The pressure-induced semimetal, with lowering temperature, experiences a transition to another semimetal with a partial-gap of 0.1-0.2 eV, accompanied with a monoclinic distortion analogous to that occurs at the excitonic transition below Ps. We argue that the partial-gap originates primarily from a symmetry-allowed hybridization of Ta-conduction and Ni-valence bands due to the lattice distortion, indicative of the importance of electron-lattice coupling. The transition is suppressed with increasing pressure to Pc = 8 GPa. Superconductivity with a maximum Tsc = 1.2 K emerges around Pc, likely mediated by strongly electron-coupled soft phonons. The electron-lattice coupling is as important ingredient as the excitonic instability in Ta2NiSe5.

Charge stiffness and long-range correlation in the optically induced $η$-pairing state of the one-dimensional Hubbard model

We show that optical excitation of the Mott insulating phase of the one-dimensional Hubbard model can create a state possessing two of the hallmarks of superconductivity: a nonvanishing charge stiffness and long-ranged pairing correlation. By employing the exact diagonalization method, we find that the superposition of the $η$-pairing eigenstates induced by the optical pump exhibits a nonvanishing charge stiffness and a pairing correlation that decays very slowly with system size in sharp contrast to the behavior of an ensemble of thermally excited eigenstates, which has a vanishing charge stiffness and no long-ranged pairing correlations. We show that the charge stiffness is indeed directly associated with the $η$-pairing correlation in the Hubbard model. Our finding demonstrates that optical pumping can actually lead to superconducting-like properties on the basis of the $η$-pairing states.

Photoinduced $η$-pairing at finite temperatures

We numerically prove photoinduced $η$-pairing in a half-filled fermionic Hubbard chain at both zero and finite temperature. The result, obtained by combining the matrix-product-state based infinite time-evolving block decimation technique and the purification method, applies to the thermodynamic limit. Exciting the Mott insulator by a laser electric field docked on via the Peierls phase, we track the time-evolution of the correlated many-body system and determine the optimal parameter set for which the nonlocal part of the $η$-pair correlation function becomes dominant during the laser pump at zero and low temperatures. These correlations vanish at higher temperatures and long times after pulse irradiation. In the high laser frequency strong Coulomb coupling regime we observe a remnant enhancement of the Brillouin-zone boundary pair-correlation function also at high temperatures, if the Hubbard interaction is about a multiple of the laser frequency, which can be attributed to an enhanced double occupancy in the virtual Floquet state.

Superconductivity and charge density wave under a time-dependent periodic field in the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

We investigate the competition between superconductivity (SC) and charge density wave (CDW) under a time-dependent periodic field in the attractive Hubbard model. By employing the time-dependent exact diagonalization method, we show that the driving frequency and amplitude of the external field can control the enhancement of either the superconducting pair or the CDW correlations, which are degenerate in the ground state of the half-filled attractive Hubbard model in the absence of the field. In the strong-coupling limit of the attractive Hubbard interaction, the controllability is characterized by the anisotropic interaction of the effective model. The anisotropy is induced by the external field and lifts the degeneracy of SC and CDW. We find that the enhancement or suppression of the superconducting pair and CDW correlations in the periodically-driven attractive Hubbard model can be well interpreted by the quench dynamics of the effective model derived in the strong-coupling limit.
