Two non-nilpotent linear transformations that satisfy the cubic $q$-Serre relations

Let $K$ denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0, and let $q$ denote a nonzero scalar in $K$ that is not a root of unity. Let $A_q$ denote the unital associative $K$-algebra defined by generators $x,y$ and relations x^3y-[3]_q x^2yx +[3]_q xyx^2 -yx^3=0, y^3x-[3]_q y^2xy +[3]_q yxy^2 -xy^3=0, where $[3]_q = (q^3-q^{-3})/(q-q^{-1})$. We classify up to isomorphism the finite-dimensional irreducible $A_q$-modules on which neither of $x,y$ is nilpotent. We discuss how these modules are related to tridiagonal pairs.

The quantum algebra $U_q(sl_2)$ and its equitable presentation

We show that the quantum algebra $U_q(sl_2)$ has a presentation with generators $x,x^{-1},y,z$ and relations $x x^{-1}=1$, $x^{-1} x=1$, $\frac{qxy-q^{-1}yx}{q-q^{-1}}=1$, $\frac{qyz-q^{-1}zy}{q-q^{-1}}=1$, $\frac{qzx-q^{-1}xz}{q-q^{-1}}=1$. We call this the equitable presentation. We investigate the action of $x,x^{-1},y,z$ on finite-dimensional $U_q(sl_2)$-modules.

Some algebra related to $P$-and $Q$-polynomial association schemes

Let $K$ denote a field, and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. Consider a pair of linear transformations $A:V\to V$ and $A^*:V\to V$ that satisfy both conditions below: (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal, and the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal, and the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal. Such a pair is called a Leonard pair on $V$. In this paper we introduce a mild generalization of a Leonard pair called a tridiagonal pair. A Leonard pair is the same thing as a tridiagonal pair such that for each transformation all eigenspaces have dimension one.

Tridiagonal pairs and the quantum affine algebra $U_q({\hat {sl}}_2)$

Let $K$ denote a field and let $V$ denote a vector space over $K$ with finite positive dimension. By definition a Leonard pair on $V$ is a pair of linear transformations $A:V\to V$ and $A^*:V\to V$ that satisfy the following two conditions: (i) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is irreducible tridiagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is diagonal. (ii) There exists a basis for $V$ with respect to which the matrix representing $A$ is diagonal and the matrix representing $A^*$ is irreducible tridiagonal. There is a correspondence between Leonard pairs and a family of orthogonal polynomials consisting of the $q$-Racah and some related polynomials of the Askey scheme. In this paper we discuss a mild generalization of a Leonard pair which we call a tridiagonal pair. We will show how certain tridiagonal pairs are associated with finite dimensional modules for the quantum affine algebra $U_q({\hat {sl}}_2)$.

The shape of a tridiagonal pair

Let K denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0. Let V denote a vector space over K with finite positive dimension and let A,B denote a tridiagonal pair on V. We make an assumption about this pair. Let q denote a nonzero scalar in K which is not a root of unity. We assume A and B satisfy the q-Serre relations (i) A^3B - [3]A^2BA + [3]ABA^2 - BA^3=0; (ii) B^3A - [3]B^2AB + [3]BAB^2 - AB^3=0, where [3]=(q^3-q^{-3})/(q-q^{-1}). Let (ρ_0, ρ_1,...,ρ_d) denote the shape vector for A,B. We show the entries in this shape vector are bounded above by binomial coefficients. Indeed we show ρ_i is at most (d \atop i) for 0 \leq i \leq d. We obtain this result by displaying a spanning set for V.
