On deformations of foliations and characteristic classes

We study characteristic classes for deformations of foliations. Those classes include known classes such as the Godbillon--Vey class and the Fuks--Lodder--Kotschick class. We introduce a certain differential graded algebra (DGA for short) which recovers the Bott vanishing and some formulae by Heitsch. Some basic properties and structures of the cohomology of those DGA's are discussed. In particular, it is shown that at the level of the cohomology of DGA, there are some classes which cannot be described by the Godbillon--Vey class and the Fuks--Lodder--Kotschick class. It is also shown that if a certain type of characteristic classes admit non-trivial deformations in examples, then they yield another kind of classes which admit also non-trivial deformations.

Notes on projective structures with torsion

We show that projective structures with torsion are described in terms of affine connections in a parallel way as in the torsion-free case which is done by Kobayashi and Nagano. For this, we make use of a bundle of formal frames, which is a generalization of a bundle of frames. We will also describe projective structures in terms of Thomas--Whitehead connections by following Roberts. In particular, we introduce normal projective connections and show the fundamental theorem for Thomas--Whitehead connections regardless the triviality of the torsion. We will study some examples of projective structures of which the torsion is non-trivial while the curvature is trivial. In this article, projective structures are considered to be the same if they have the same geodesics ignoring parameters and the same torsions.

Formal frames and deformations of affine connections

We will introduce formal frames of manifolds, which are a generalization of ordinary frames. Their fundamental properties are discussed. In particular, canonical forms are introduced, and torsions are defined in terms of them as a generalization of the structural equations. It will be shown that the vanishing of torsions are equivalent to the realizability of given formal frames as ordinary frames. We will also discuss deformations of linear connections on tangent bundles. An application to deformations of foliations are then given.

On a characteristic class associated with deformations of foliations

A characteristic class for deformations of foliations called the Fuks-Lodder-Kotschick class (FLK class for short) is studied. It seems unknown if there is a real foliation with non-trivial FLK class. In this article, we show some conditions to assure the triviality of the FLK class. On the other hand, we show that the FLK class is easily to be non-trivial for transversely holomorphic foliations. We present an example and give a construction which generalizes it.

On Fatou and Julia sets of foliations

The Fatou-Julia decomposition is significant in the study of iterations of holomorphic mappings. Such a decomposition can be also considered for foliations in a unified manner. Although the decomposition will be fundamental in the study, it is not easy to decide the decomposition. In this article, we give a sufficient condition for open sets to be contained in Fatou sets. We also discuss relations between Fatou--Julia decompositions and minimal sets.
