Distributed Optimization for Second-Order Multi-Agent Systems with Dynamic Event-Triggered Communication

In this paper, we propose a fully distributed algorithm for second-order continuous-time multi-agent systems to solve the distributed optimization problem. The global objective function is a sum of private cost functions associated with the individual agents and the interaction between agents is described by a weighted undirected graph. We show the exponential convergence of the proposed algorithm if the underlying graph is connected, each private cost function is locally gradient-Lipschitz-continuous, and the global objective function is restricted strongly convex with respect to the global minimizer. Moreover, to reduce the overall need of communication, we then propose a dynamic event-triggered communication mechanism that is free of Zeno behavior. It is shown that the exponential convergence is achieved if the private cost functions are also globally gradient-Lipschitz-continuous. Numerical simulations are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Geodesic Clustering in Deep Generative Models

Deep generative models are tremendously successful in learning low-dimensional latent representations that well-describe the data. These representations, however, tend to much distort relationships between points, i.e. pairwise distances tend to not reflect semantic similarities well. This renders unsupervised tasks, such as clustering, difficult when working with the latent representations. We demonstrate that taking the geometry of the generative model into account is sufficient to make simple clustering algorithms work well over latent representations. Leaning on the recent finding that deep generative models constitute stochastically immersed Riemannian manifolds, we propose an efficient algorithm for computing geodesics (shortest paths) and computing distances in the latent space, while taking its distortion into account. We further propose a new architecture for modeling uncertainty in variational autoencoders, which is essential for understanding the geometry of deep generative models. Experiments show that the geodesic distance is very likely to reflect the internal structure of the data.

Experimental Test of Generalized Hardy's Paradox

Since the pillars of quantum theory were established, it was already noted that quantum physics may allow certain correlations defying any local realistic picture of nature, as first recognized by Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen. These quantum correlations, now termed quantum nonlocality and tested by violation of Bell's inequality that consists of statistical correlations fulfilling local realism, have found loophole-free experimental confirmation. A more striking way to demonstrate the conflict exists, and can be extended to the multipartite scenario. Here we report experimental confirmation of such a striking way, the multipartite generalized Hardy's paradoxes, in which no inequality is used and the conflict is stronger than that within just two parties. The paradoxes we are considering here belong to a general framework [S.-H. Jiang \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 050403 (2018)], including previously known multipartite extensions of Hardy's original paradox as special cases. The conflict shown here is stronger than in previous multipartite Hardy's paradox. Thus, the demonstration of Hardy-typed quantum nonlocality becomes sharper than ever.

Segmented correspondence curve regression model for quantifying reproducibility of high-throughput experiments

The reliability of a high-throughput biological experiment relies highly on the settings of the operational factors in its experimental and data-analytic procedures. Understanding how operational factors influence the reproducibility of the experimental outcome is critical for constructing robust workflows and obtaining reliable results. One challenge in this area is that candidates at different levels of significance may respond to the operational factors differently. To model this heterogeneity, we develop a novel segmented regression model, based on the rank concordance between candidates from different replicate samples, to characterize the varying effects of operational factors for candidates at different levels of significance. A grid search method is developed to identify the change point in response to the operational factors and estimate the covariate effects accounting for the change. A sup-likelihood-ratio-type test is proposed to test the existence of a change point. Simulation studies show that our method yields a well-calibrated type I error, is powerful in detecting the difference in reproducibility, and achieves a better model fitting than the existing method. An application on a ChIP-seq dataset reveals interesting insights on how sequencing depth affects the reproducibility of experimental results, demonstrating the usefulness of our method in designing cost-effective and reliable high-throughput workflows.

Bethe states of the trigonometric SU(3) spin chain with generic open boundaries

By combining the algebraic Bethe ansatz and the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, we investigate the trigonometric SU(3) model with generic open boundaries. The eigenvalues of the transfer matrix are given in terms of an inhomogeneous T-Q relation, and the corresponding eigenstates are expressed in terms of nested Bethe-type eigenstates which have well-defined homogeneous limit. This exact solution provides a basis for further analyzing the thermodynamic properties and correlation functions of the anisotropic models associated with higher rank algebras.

Super-Eddington accreting massive black holes explore high-$z$ cosmology: Monte-Carlo simulations

In this paper, we simulate Super-Eddington accreting massive black holes (SEAMBHs) as the candles to probe cosmology for the first time. SEAMBHs have been demonstrated to be able to provide a new tool for estimating cosmological distance. Thus, we create a series of mock data sets of SEAMBHs, especially in the high redshift region, to check their abilities to probe the cosmology. To fulfill the potential of the SEAMBHs on the cosmology, we apply the simulated data to three projects. The first is the exploration of their abilities to constrain the cosmological parameters, in which we combine different data sets of current observations such as the cosmic microwave background from {\it Planck} and type Ia supernovae from Joint Light-curve Analysis (JLA). We find that the high redshift SEAMBHs can help to break the degeneracies of the background cosmological parameters constrained by {\it Planck} and JLA, thus giving much tighter constraints of the cosmological parameters. The second uses the high redshift SEAMBHs as the complements of the low redshift JLA to constrain the early expansion rate and the dark energy density evolution in the cold dark matter frame. Our results show that these high redshift SEAMBHs are very powerful on constraining the early Hubble rate and the evolution of the dark energy density; thus they can give us more information about the expansion history of our Universe, which is also crucial for testing the $Λ$CDM model in the high redshift region. Finally, we check the SEAMBH candles' abilities to reconstruct the equation of state of dark energy at high redshift. In summary, our results show that the SEAMBHs, as the rare candles in the high redshift region, can provide us a new and independent observation to probe cosmology in the future.

VH-HFCN based Parking Slot and Lane Markings Segmentation on Panoramic Surround View

The automatic parking is being massively developed by car manufacturers and providers. Until now, there are two problems with the automatic parking. First, there is no openly-available segmentation labels of parking slot on panoramic surround view (PSV) dataset. Second, how to detect parking slot and road structure robustly. Therefore, in this paper, we build up a public PSV dataset. At the same time, we proposed a highly fused convolutional network (HFCN) based segmentation method for parking slot and lane markings based on the PSV dataset. A surround-view image is made of four calibrated images captured from four fisheye cameras. We collect and label more than 4,200 surround view images for this task, which contain various illuminated scenes of different types of parking slots. A VH-HFCN network is proposed, which adopts an HFCN as the base, with an extra efficient VH-stage for better segmenting various markings. The VH-stage consists of two independent linear convolution paths with vertical and horizontal convolution kernels respectively. This modification enables the network to robustly and precisely extract linear features. We evaluated our model on the PSV dataset and the results showed outstanding performance in ground markings segmentation. Based on the segmented markings, parking slots and lanes are acquired by skeletonization, hough line transform and line arrangement.

Probing cosmic anisotropy with gravitational waves as standard sirens

The gravitational wave (GW) as a standard siren directly determines the luminosity distance from the gravitational waveform without reference to the specific cosmological model, of which the redshift can be obtained separately by means of the electromagnetic counterpart like GW events from binary neutron stars and massive black hole binaries (MBHBs). To see to what extent the standard siren can reproduce the presumed dipole anisotropy written in the simulated data of standard siren events from typical configurations of GW detectors, we find that (1) for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna with different MBHB models during five-year observations, the cosmic isotropy can be ruled out at $3σ$ confidence level (C.L.) and the dipole direction can be constrained roughly around $20\%$ at $2σ$ C.L., as long as the dipole amplitude is larger than $0.03$, $0.06$ and $0.025$ for MBHB models Q3d, pop III and Q3nod with increasing constraining ability, respectively; (2) for Einstein Telescope with no less than $200$ standard siren events, the cosmic isotropy can be ruled out at $3σ$ C.L. if the dipole amplitude is larger than $0.06$, and the dipole direction can be constrained within $20\%$ at $3σ$ C.L. if the dipole amplitude is near $0.1$; (3) for the Deci-Hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory with no less than $100$ standard siren events, the cosmic isotropy can be ruled out at $3σ$ C.L. for dipole amplitude larger than $0.03$ , and the dipole direction can even be constrained within $10\%$ at $3σ$ C.L. if the dipole amplitude is larger than $0.07$. Our work manifests the promising perspective of the constraint ability on the cosmic anisotropy from the standard siren approach.

$ρ$-hot Lexicon Embedding-based Two-level LSTM for Sentiment Analysis

Sentiment analysis is a key component in various text mining applications. Numerous sentiment classification techniques, including conventional and deep learning-based methods, have been proposed in the literature. In most existing methods, a high-quality training set is assumed to be given. Nevertheless, constructing a high-quality training set that consists of highly accurate labels is challenging in real applications. This difficulty stems from the fact that text samples usually contain complex sentiment representations, and their annotation is subjective. We address this challenge in this study by leveraging a new labeling strategy and utilizing a two-level long short-term memory network to construct a sentiment classifier. Lexical cues are useful for sentiment analysis, and they have been utilized in conventional studies. For example, polar and privative words play important roles in sentiment analysis. A new encoding strategy, that is, $ρ$-hot encoding, is proposed to alleviate the drawbacks of one-hot encoding and thus effectively incorporate useful lexical cues. We compile three Chinese data sets on the basis of our label strategy and proposed methodology. Experiments on the three data sets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms.

A Class of Quasitriangular Group-cograded Multiplier Hopf Algebras

For a multiplier Hopf algebra pairing $\langle A, B\rangle$, we construct a class of group-cograded multiplier Hopf algebras $D(A, B)$, generalizing the classical construction of finite dimensional Hopf algebras introduced by Panaite and Staic Mihai. Furthermore, if the multiplier Hopf algebra pairing admits a canonical multiplier in $M(B\otimes A)$ we show the existence of quasitriangular structure on $D(A, B)$. As an application, some special cases and examples are provided.

Semantic Segmentation via Highly Fused Convolutional Network with Multiple Soft Cost Functions

Semantic image segmentation is one of the most challenged tasks in computer vision. In this paper, we propose a highly fused convolutional network, which consists of three parts: feature downsampling, combined feature upsampling and multiple predictions. We adopt a strategy of multiple steps of upsampling and combined feature maps in pooling layers with its corresponding unpooling layers. Then we bring out multiple pre-outputs, each pre-output is generated from an unpooling layer by one-step upsampling. Finally, we concatenate these pre-outputs to get the final output. As a result, our proposed network makes highly use of the feature information by fusing and reusing feature maps. In addition, when training our model, we add multiple soft cost functions on pre-outputs and final outputs. In this way, we can reduce the loss reduction when the loss is back propagated. We evaluate our model on three major segmentation datasets: CamVid, PASCAL VOC and ADE20K. We achieve a state-of-the-art performance on CamVid dataset, as well as considerable improvements on PASCAL VOC dataset and ADE20K dataset

The cointegral theory of weak multiplier Hopf algebras

In this paper, we introduce and study the notion of cointegrals in a weak multiplier Hopf algebras $(A, Δ)$. A cointegral is a non-zero element $h$ in the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ such that $ah=\v_t(a)h$ for any $a\in A$. When $A$ has a faithful set of cointegrals (now we call $A$ of {\it discrete type}), we give a sufficient and necessary condition for existence of integrals on $A$. Then we consider a special case, i.e., $A$ has a single faithful cointegral, and we obtain more better results, such as $A$ is Frobenius, quasi-Frobenius, et al. Moreover when an algebraic quantum groupoid $A$ has a faithful cointegral, then the dual $\widehat{A}$ must be weak Hopf algebra. In the end, we investigate when $A$ has a cointegral and study relation between compact and discrete type.

Demonstration of Laser-produced Neutron Diagnostic by Radiative Capture Gamma-rays

We report a new scenario of time-of-flight (TOF) technique in which fast neutrons and delayed gamma-ray signals were both recorded in a millisecond time window in harsh environments induced by high-intensity lasers. The delayed gamma signals, arriving far later than the original fast neutron and often being ignored previously, were identified to be the results of radiative captures of thermalized neutrons. The linear correlation between gamma photon number and the fast neutron yield shows that these delayed gamma events can be employed for neutron diagnosis. This method can reduce the detecting efficiency dropping problem caused by prompt high-flux gamma radiation, and provides a new way for neutron diagnosing in high-intensity laser-target interaction experiments.

Identifying Genetic Risk Factors via Sparse Group Lasso with Group Graph Structure

Genome-wide association studies (GWA studies or GWAS) investigate the relationships between genetic variants such as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and individual traits. Recently, incorporating biological priors together with machine learning methods in GWA studies has attracted increasing attention. However, in real-world, nucleotide-level bio-priors have not been well-studied to date. Alternatively, studies at gene-level, for example, protein--protein interactions and pathways, are more rigorous and legitimate, and it is potentially beneficial to utilize such gene-level priors in GWAS. In this paper, we proposed a novel two-level structured sparse model, called Sparse Group Lasso with Group-level Graph structure (SGLGG), for GWAS. It can be considered as a sparse group Lasso along with a group-level graph Lasso. Essentially, SGLGG penalizes the nucleotide-level sparsity as well as takes advantages of gene-level priors (both gene groups and networks), to identifying phenotype-associated risk SNPs. We employ the alternating direction method of multipliers algorithm to optimize the proposed model. Our experiments on the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative whole genome sequence data and neuroimage data demonstrate the effectiveness of SGLGG. As a regression model, it is competitive to the state-of-the-arts sparse models; as a variable selection method, SGLGG is promising for identifying Alzheimer's disease-related risk SNPs.

Standard sirens and dark sector with Gaussian process

The gravitational waves from compact binary systems are viewed as a standard siren to probe the evolution of the universe. This paper summarizes the potential and ability to use the gravitational waves to constrain the cosmological parameters and the dark sector interaction in the Gaussian process methodology. After briefly introducing the method to reconstruct the dark sector interaction by the Gaussian process, the concept of standard sirens and the analysis of reconstructing the dark sector interaction with LISA are outlined. Furthermore, we estimate the constraint ability of the gravitational waves on cosmological parameters with ET. The numerical methods we use are Gaussian process and the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo. Finally, we also forecast the improvements of the abilities to constrain the cosmological parameters with ET and LISA combined with the \it Planck.

Traffic-Aware Transmission Mode Selection in D2D-enabled Cellular Networks with Token System

We consider a D2D-enabled cellular network where user equipments (UEs) owned by rational users are incentivized to form D2D pairs using tokens. They exchange tokens electronically to "buy" and "sell" D2D services. Meanwhile the devices have the ability to choose the transmission mode, i.e. receiving data via cellular links or D2D links. Thus taking the different benefits brought by diverse traffic types as a prior, the UEs can utilize their tokens more efficiently via transmission mode selection. In this paper, the optimal transmission mode selection strategy as well as token collection policy are investigated to maximize the long-term utility in the dynamic network environment. The optimal policy is proved to be a threshold strategy, and the thresholds have a monotonicity property. Numerical simulations verify our observations and the gain from transmission mode selection is observed.
