List strong edge coloring of some classes of graphs

A {\em strong edge coloring} of a graph is a proper edge coloring in which every color class is an induced matching. The {\em strong chromatic index} of a graph is the minimum number of colors needed to obtain a strong edge coloring. In an analogous way, we can define the list version of strong edge coloring and list version of strong chromatic index. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph with maximum degree at most four and maximum average degree less than $3$, then the list strong chromatic index is at most $3Δ+ 1$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $G$. In addition, we prove that if $G$ is a planar graph with maximum degree at least $4$ and girth at least $7$, then the list strong chromatic index is at most $3Δ$.

almaBTE: a solver of the space-time dependent Boltzmann transport equation for phonons in structured materials

almaBTE is a software package that solves the space- and time-dependent Boltzmann transport equation for phonons, using only ab-initio calculated quantities as inputs. The program can predictively tackle phonon transport in bulk crystals and alloys, thin films, superlattices, and multiscale structures with size features in the nm-$μ$m range. Among many other quantities, the program can output thermal conductances and effective thermal conductivities, space-resolved average temperature profiles, and heat-current distributions resolved in frequency and space. Its first-principles character makes almaBTE especially well suited to investigate novel materials and structures. This article gives an overview of the program structure and presents illustrative examples for some of its uses.

A spectrally tunable plasmonic photosensor with an ultrathin semiconductor region

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been widely utilized to improve the absorption performance in the photosensors. Graphene has emerged as a promising plasmonic material, which supports tunable SPR and shows significant flexibility over metals. In this letter, a hybrid photosensor based on the integration of periodic cross-shaped graphene arrays with an ultrathin light-absorbing semiconductor is proposed. A tenfold absorption enhancement over a large range of the incidence angle for both light polarizations as well as a considerably high photogeneration rate ($\sim10^{37}$) is demonstrated at the resonance. Compared with traditional metal-based plasmon-enhanced photosensors, the absorption enhancement here can be expediently tuned with manipulating the Fermi energy of graphene. The proposed photosensor can amplify the photoresponse to the incidence light at the selected wavelength and thus be utilized in photosensing with high efficiency and tunable spectral selectivity in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) and terahertz (THz) regime.

On-Surface Pseudo-High Dilution Synthesis of Macrocycles: Principle and Mechanism

Macrocycles have attracted much attention due to their specific "endless" topology, which results in extraordinary properties compared to related linear (open-chain) molecules. However, challenges still remain in their controlled synthesis with well-defined constitution and geometry. Here, we report the first successful application of the (pseudo-)high dilution method to the conditions of on-surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). This approach leads to high yields (up to 84%) of cyclic hyperbenzene ([18]-honeycombene) via an Ullmann-type reaction from 4,4"-dibromo-meta-terphenyl (DMTP) as precursor on a Ag(111) surface. The mechanism of macrocycle formation was explored in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). We propose that hyperbenzene (MTP)6 forms majorly by stepwise desilverization of an organometallic (MTP-Ag)6 macrocycle, which preforms via cyclisation of (MTP-Ag)6 chains under pseudo-high dilution condition. The high probability of cyclisation on the stage of the organometallic phase results from the reversibility of the C-Ag bond. The case is different from that in solution, in which cyclisation typically occurs on the stage of covalently bonded open-chain precursor. This difference in the cyclisation mechanism on a surface compared to that in solution stems mainly from the 2D confinement exerted by the surface template, which to a large extent prevents the flipping of chain segments necessary for cyclisation.

Strong interaction between graphene layer and Fano resonance in terahertz metamaterials

Graphene has emerged as a promising building block in the modern optics and optoelectronics due to its novel optical and electrical properties. In the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regime, graphene behaves like metals and supports surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). Moreover, the continuously tunable conductivity of graphene enables active SPRs and gives rise to a range of active applications. However, the interaction between graphene and metal-based resonant metamaterials has not been fully understood. In this work, a simulation investigation on the interaction between the graphene layer and THz resonances supported by the two-gap split ring metamaterials is systematically conducted. The simulation results show that the graphene layer can substantially reduce the Fano resonance and even switch it off, while leave the dipole resonance nearly unaffected, which phenomenon is well explained with the high conductivity of graphene. With the manipulation of graphene conductivity via altering its Fermi energy or layer number, the amplitude of the Fano resonance can be modulated. The tunable Fano resonance here together with the underlying physical mechanism can be strategically important in designing active metal-graphene hybrid metamaterials. In addition, the "sensitivity" to the graphene layer of the Fano resonance is also highly appreciated in the field of ultrasensitive sensing, where the novel physical mechanism can be employed in sensing other graphene-like two-dimensional (2D) materials or biomolecules with the high conductivity.

Time-dependent Hierarchical Dirichlet Model for Timeline Generation

Timeline Generation aims at summarizing news from different epochs and telling readers how an event evolves. It is a new challenge that combines salience ranking with novelty detection. For long-term public events, the main topic usually includes various aspects across different epochs and each aspect has its own evolving pattern. Existing approaches neglect such hierarchical topic structure involved in the news corpus in timeline generation. In this paper, we develop a novel time-dependent Hierarchical Dirichlet Model (HDM) for timeline generation. Our model can aptly detect different levels of topic information across corpus and such structure is further used for sentence selection. Based on the topic mined fro HDM, sentences are selected by considering different aspects such as relevance, coherence and coverage. We develop experimental systems to evaluate 8 long-term events that public concern. Performance comparison between different systems demonstrates the effectiveness of our model in terms of ROUGE metrics.

A Framework for Dynamic Stability Analysis of Power Systems with Volatile Wind Power

We propose a framework employing stochastic differential equations to facilitate the long-term stability analysis of power grids with intermittent wind power generations. This framework takes into account the discrete dynamics which play a critical role in the long-term stability analysis, incorporates the model of wind speed with different probability distributions, and also develops an approximation methodology (by a deterministic hybrid model) for the stochastic hybrid model to reduce the computational burden brought about by the uncertainty of wind power. The theoretical and numerical studies show that a deterministic hybrid model can provide an accurate trajectory approximation and stability assessments for the stochastic hybrid model under mild conditions. In addition, we discuss the critical cases that the deterministic hybrid model fails and discover that these cases are caused by a violation of the proposed sufficient conditions. Such discussion complements the proposed framework and methodology and also reaffirms the importance of the stochastic hybrid model when the system operates close to its stability limit.

Symmetric flows for compressible heat-conducting fluids with temperature dependent viscosity coefficients

We consider the Navier--Stokes equations for compressible heat-conducting ideal polytropic gases in a bounded annular domain when the viscosity and thermal conductivity coefficients are general smooth functions of temperature. A global-in-time, spherically or cylindrically symmetric, classical solution to the initial boundary value problem is shown to exist uniquely and converge exponentially to the constant state as the time tends to infinity under certain assumptions on the initial data and the adiabatic exponent $γ$. The initial data can be large if $γ$ is sufficiently close to 1. These results are of Nishida--Smoller type and extend the work [Liu et al., SIAM J. Math. Anal. 46 (2014), 2185--2228] restricted to the one-dimensional flows.

Similarity Search Combining Query Relaxation and Diversification

We study the similarity search problem which aims to find the similar query results according to a set of given data and a query string. To balance the result number and result quality, we combine query result diversity with query relaxation. Relaxation guarantees the number of the query results, returning more relevant elements to the query if the results are too few, while the diversity tries to reduce the similarity among the returned results. By making a trade-off of similarity and diversity, we improve the user experience. To achieve this goal, we define a novel goal function combining similarity and diversity. Aiming at this goal, we propose three algorithms. Among them, algorithms genGreedy and genCluster perform relaxation first and select part of the candidates to diversify. The third algorithm CB2S splits the dataset into smaller pieces using the clustering algorithm of k-means and processes queries in several small sets to retrieve more diverse results. The balance of similarity and diversity is determined through setting a threshold, which has a default value and can be adjusted according to users' preference. The performance and efficiency of our system are demonstrated through extensive experiments based on various datasets.

Humidity Effect on Diffusion and Structure of a Moisture-Swing CO2 Sorbent

Ion hydrations are ubiquitous in natural and fundamental processes. A quantitative analysis of a novel CO2 sorbent driven by ion hydrations was presented by molecular dynamics (MD). We explored the humidity effect on the diffusion and structure of ion hydrations in CO2 sorbent, as well as the working mechanism of the moisture-swing CO2 sorbent. The discovery of the diffusion coefficients of ions at different humidity levels can be applied to design a new CO2 sorbent with superior performance. The molecular structure analysis shows a higher precipitation rate of HCO3- ions than CO32- ions in a dry surrounding, which leads to a more alkaline surrounding on CO2 sorbent that may promote the absorption of CO2.

AGN-Host Connection at 0.5 < z < 2.5: A rapid evolution of AGN fraction in red galaxies during the last 10 Gyr

We explore the dependence of the incidence of moderate-luminosity ($L_{X} = 10^{41.9-43.7}$ erg s$^{-1}$) AGNs and the distribution of their accretion rates on host color at 0.5 < z < 2.5, using deep X-ray data in GOODS fields. We use extinction-corrected rest-frame U-V colors to divide both AGN hosts and non-AGN galaxies into red sequence (quiescent), green valley (transition), and blue cloud (star-forming) populations. We find that both the AGN fraction at fixed stellar mass and its evolution with redshift are dependent on host colors. Most notably, red galaxies have the lowest AGN fraction (~5\%) at z~1 yet with most rapid redshift evolution, increasing by a factor of 5 (~24\%) at z~2. Green galaxies exhibit the highest AGN fraction across all redshifts, which is most pronounced at z~2 with more than half of them hosting an AGN at $M_{*} > 10^{10.6} M_{\odot}$. Together with the high AGN fraction in red galaxies at z~2, this indicates that X-ray AGNs could be important in both transforming blue galaxies into red ones and subsequently maintaining their quiescence at high redshift. Furthermore, consistent with low-redshift studies, we find that the probability of hosting an AGN in the total galaxy population can be characterized by a universal Eddington ratio ($p(λ_{Edd}) \sim λ_{Edd}^{-0.4}$) and a moderate redshift evolution. Yet consistent with their different AGN fractions, different populations appear to also have different $p(λ_{Edd})$ with red galaxies exhibiting more rapid redshift evolution than green and blue ones. Evidence for a steeper power law of $p(λ_{Edd})$ in red galaxies is also presented, though larger samples are needed to confirm. These results suggest that the AGN accretion or the growth of supermassive black holes is related to their host properties, and may also influence their hosts in a different mode dependent on the host color.

Negative thermal expansion and local lattice distortion in the (Sc1-xTix)F3 and related solid solutions

Negative thermal expansion (NTE) is unusual but important property for control of thermal expansion. In the present study, the chemical modification is utilized to engineer controllable thermal expansion in cubic NTE ScF3. A broad window of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE = -1.51 ~ -3.4*10^-6 K-1, 300-800 K) has been achieved in Sc1-xMxF3 (M = Ti, Al and Ga). The long-range crystallographic structure of (Sc1-xTix)F3 adheres to the cubic Pm-3m symmetry according to the analysis of high-energy synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of synchrotron X-ray total scattering was performed to investigate the local lattice distortion. It was found that the weakness of NTE has a close correlation with the local lattice distortion. Based on the coupled rotation model, it is presumably that this local distortion might dampen the transverse vibration of F atoms and thus reduce NTE. The present work provides a possible reference for the design of controllable NTE in open framework solids.

Improvement of a Theorem of Lorentz (1963) and its Generalization to the Multivariate Case

In this short note we have proved an enhanced version of a theorem of Lorentz [1] and its generalization to the multivariate case which gives a non- uniform estimate of degree of approximation by a polynomial with positive coefficients. The performance of the approximation at the vertices of [0; 1]d is more precisely characterized by the improved result and its multivariate generalization. The latter provides mathematical foundation on which multivariate density approximation by a polynomial with positive coefficients can be established.

Interfacial Control of Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction in Heavy Metal_Ferromagnetic Metal Thin Film Heterostructures

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya Interaction (DMI) in ultrathin magnetic thin film heterostructures provides a new approach for controlling spin textures on mesoscopic length scales. Here we investigate the dependence of the interfacial DMI constant D on a Pt wedge insertion layer in Ta_CoFeB_Pt(wedge)_MgO thin films by observing the asymmetric spin wave dispersion using Brillouin light scattering. Continuous tuning of D by more than a factor of three is realized by inserting less than one monolayer of Pt. The observations provide new insights for designing magnetic thin film heterostructures with tailored D for controlling skyrmions and magnetic domain wall chirality and dynamics.

Raman lasing and Fano lineshapes in a packaged fiber-coupled whispering-gallerymode microresonator

We report Raman lasing and the optical analog of electromagnetically-induced-transparency (EIT) in a whispering-gallerymode (WGM) microtoroid resonator embedded in a low refractive index polymer matrix together with a tapered fiber coupler. The Raman laser supports both single and multimode operation with low power thresholds. Observations of Fano and EIT-like pheonomena in a packaged microresonator will enable high resolution sensors and can be used in networks where slow light process is needed. These results open the way for portable, robust, and stable WGM microlasers and laserbased sensors for applications in various environments.

Acyclic chromatic index of triangle-free 1-planar graphs

An acyclic edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper edge coloring such that every cycle is colored with at least three colors. The acyclic chromatic index $\chiup_{a}'(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the least number of colors in an acyclic edge coloring of $G$. It was conjectured that $\chiup'_{a}(G)\leq Δ(G) + 2$ for any simple graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$. A graph is {\em $1$-planar} if it can be drawn on the plane such that every edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we prove that every triangle-free $1$-planar graph $G$ has an acyclic edge coloring with $Δ(G) + 16$ colors.

Light subgraphs in graphs with average degree at most four

A graph $H$ is said to be {\em light} in a family $\mathfrak{G}$ of graphs if at least one member of $\mathfrak{G}$ contains a copy of $H$ and there exists an integer $λ(H, \mathfrak{G})$ such that each member $G$ of $\mathfrak{G}$ with a copy of $H$ also has a copy $K$ of $H$ such that $°_{G}(v) \leq λ(H, \mathfrak{G})$ for all $v \in V(K)$. In this paper, we study the light graphs in the class of graphs with small average degree, including the plane graphs with some restrictions on girth.

Discovery of a galaxy cluster with a violently starbursting core at z=2.506

We report the discovery of a remarkable concentration of massive galaxies with extended X-ray emission at $z_{spec} = 2.506$, which contains 11 massive ($M_{*} \gtrsim 10^{11} M_{\odot}$) galaxies in the central 80kpc region (11.6$σ$ overdensity). We have spectroscopically confirmed 17 member galaxies with 11 from CO and the remaining ones from $Hα$. The X-ray luminosity, stellar mass content and velocity dispersion all point to a collapsed, cluster-sized dark matter halo with mass $M_{200c} = 10^{13.9\pm0.2} M_{\odot}$, making it the most distant X-ray-detected cluster known to date. Unlike other clusters discovered so far, this structure is dominated by star-forming galaxies (SFGs) in the core with only 2 out of the 11 massive galaxies classified as quiescent. The star formation rate (SFR) in the 80kpc core reaches $\sim$3400 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ with a gas depletion time of $\sim 200$ Myr, suggesting that we caught this cluster in rapid build-up of a dense core. The high SFR is driven by both a high abundance of SFGs and a higher starburst fraction ($\sim25\%$, compared to 3\%-5\% in the field). The presence of both a collapsed, cluster-sized halo and a predominant population of massive SFGs suggests that this structure could represent an important transition phase between protoclusters and mature clusters. It provides evidence that the main phase of massive galaxy passivization will take place after galaxies accrete onto the cluster, providing new insights into massive cluster formation at early epochs. The large integrated stellar mass at such high redshift challenges our understanding of massive cluster formation.
