The HI reservoir in central spiral galaxies and the implied star formation process

The cold interstellar medium (ISM) as the raw material for star formation is critical to understanding galaxy evolution. It is generally understood that galaxies stop making stars when, in one way or another, they run out of gas. However, here we provide evidence that central spiral galaxies remain rich in atomic gas even if their star formation rate and molecular gas fraction have dropped significantly compared to "normal" star-forming galaxies of the same mass. Since HI is sensitive to external processes, here we investigate central spiral galaxies using a combined sample from SDSS, ALFALFA, and xGASS surveys. After proper incompleteness corrections, we find that the key HI scaling relations for central spirals show significant but regular systematic dependence on stellar mass. At any given stellar mass, the HI gas mass fraction is about constant with changing specific star formation rate (sSFR), which suggests that HI reservoir is ubiquitous in central spirals with any star formation status down to M* ~ 10^9 Msun. Together with the tight correlation between the molecular gas mass fraction and sSFR for galaxies across a wide range of different properties, it suggests that the decline of SFR of all central spirals in the local universe is due to the halt of H2 supply, though there is plenty of HI gas around. These hence provide critical observations of the dramatically different behavior of the cold multi-phase ISM, and a key to understand the star formation process and quenching mechanism.

Spherical-like spectra for the description of the normal states of $^{108-120}$Cd in the SU3-IBM and the $Q_{2_{1}^{+}}$ anomaly

The Cd puzzle implies that the phonon excitation of a spherical nucleus should be questioned and refuted. For understanding this spherical-like $γ$-soft mode newly found experimentally, a possible answer was proposed recently in the SU3-IBM. In this paper, the evolutions of the normal states in $^{108-120}$Cd are investigated and compared with the experimental results. For better explaining the nearly zero B(E2) values between the $0_{2}^{+}$ state and the $2_{1}^{+}$ state, except for the SU(3) second-order and third-order Casimir operators, other SU(3) higher-order interactions are also considered in detail. It can be found that the results of theoretical fitting and experimental data agree well with simple parameter selection. The spherical-like spectra really exist. The deficiency may come from the lack of configuration mixing. The realistic spectra characteristics of the spherical-like spectra are found for $^{118,120}$Cd and the electric quadrupole moments of the $2_{1}^{+}$ state are predicted. The $Q_{2_{1}^{+}}$ anomaly in $^{108-116}$Cd are also discussed.

Security Loophole Induced by Photorefractive Effect in Continous-variable Quantum Key Distribution System

Modulators based on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure are widely used in continuous-variable quantum key distribution (CVQKD) systems. MZI-based variable optical attenuator (VOA) and amplitude modulator can reshape the waveform and control the intensity of coherent state signal to realize secret key information modulation in CVQKD system. However, these devices are not ideal, internal and external effects like non-linear effect and temperature may degrade their performance. In this paper, we analyzed the security loophole of CVQKD under the photorefractive effect (PE), which originates from the crystal characteristic of lithium niobate (LN). It is found that the refractive index change of modulators because of PE may lead to an overestimate or underestimate of the final secret key rate. This allows Eve to perform further attacks like intercept-resend to get more secret key information. To solve this problem, several countermeasures are proposed, which can effectively eliminate potential risks.

Multi-modal Adversarial Training for Zero-Shot Voice Cloning

A text-to-speech (TTS) model trained to reconstruct speech given text tends towards predictions that are close to the average characteristics of a dataset, failing to model the variations that make human speech sound natural. This problem is magnified for zero-shot voice cloning, a task that requires training data with high variance in speaking styles. We build off of recent works which have used Generative Advsarial Networks (GAN) by proposing a Transformer encoder-decoder architecture to conditionally discriminates between real and generated speech features. The discriminator is used in a training pipeline that improves both the acoustic and prosodic features of a TTS model. We introduce our novel adversarial training technique by applying it to a FastSpeech2 acoustic model and training on Libriheavy, a large multi-speaker dataset, for the task of zero-shot voice cloning. Our model achieves improvements over the baseline in terms of speech quality and speaker similarity. Audio examples from our system are available online.

Seeing is not Believing: An Identity Hider for Human Vision Privacy Protection

Massive captured face images are stored in the database for the identification of individuals. However, these images can be observed unintentionally by data managers, which is not at the will of individuals and may cause privacy violations. Existing protection schemes can maintain identifiability but slightly change the facial appearance, rendering it still susceptible to the visual perception of the original identity by data managers. In this paper, we propose an effective identity hider for human vision protection, which can significantly change appearance to visually hide identity while allowing identification for face recognizers. Concretely, the identity hider benefits from two specially designed modules: 1) The virtual face generation module generates a virtual face with a new appearance by manipulating the latent space of StyleGAN2. In particular, the virtual face has a similar parsing map to the original face, supporting other vision tasks such as head pose detection. 2) The appearance transfer module transfers the appearance of the virtual face into the original face via attribute replacement. Meanwhile, identity information can be preserved well with the help of the disentanglement networks. In addition, diversity and background preservation are supported to meet the various requirements. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed identity hider achieves excellent performance on privacy protection and identifiability preservation.

Realization of Landau-Zener Rabi Oscillations on optical lattice clock

Manipulating quantum states is at the heart of quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Landau-Zener Rabi oscillation (LZRO), which arises from a quantum two-level system swept repeatedly across the avoided crossing point in the time domain, has been suggested for widespread use in manipulating quantum states. Cold atom is one of the most prominent platforms for quantum computing and precision measurement. However, LZRO has never been observed in cold atoms due to its stringent requirements. By compensating for the linear drift of the clock laser and optimizing experimental parameters, we successfully measured LZRO on the strontium atomic optical clock platform under both fast and slow passage limits within $4$ to $6$ driving periods. Compared to previous results on other platforms, the duration of the plateau is $10^4$ times longer in the optical lattice clock. The experimental data also suggest that destructive Landau-Zener interference can effectively suppress dephasing effects in the optical lattice clock, paving the way for manipulating quantum states against various environmental effects in cold atomic systems.

GrassNet: State Space Model Meets Graph Neural Network

Designing spectral convolutional networks is a formidable task in graph learning. In traditional spectral graph neural networks (GNNs), polynomial-based methods are commonly used to design filters via the Laplacian matrix. In practical applications, however, these polynomial methods encounter inherent limitations, which primarily arise from the the low-order truncation of polynomial filters and the lack of overall modeling of the graph spectrum. This leads to poor performance of existing spectral approaches on real-world graph data, especially when the spectrum is highly concentrated or contains many numerically identical values, as they tend to apply the exact same modulation to signals with the same frequencies. To overcome these issues, in this paper, we propose Graph State Space Network (GrassNet), a novel graph neural network with theoretical support that provides a simple yet effective scheme for designing and learning arbitrary graph spectral filters. In particular, our GrassNet introduces structured state space models (SSMs) to model the correlations of graph signals at different frequencies and derives a unique rectification for each frequency in the graph spectrum. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first to employ SSMs for the design of GNN spectral filters, and it theoretically offers greater expressive power compared with polynomial filters. Extensive experiments on nine public benchmarks reveal that GrassNet achieves superior performance in real-world graph modeling tasks.

DIffSteISR: Harnessing Diffusion Prior for Superior Real-world Stereo Image Super-Resolution

We introduce DiffSteISR, a pioneering framework for reconstructing real-world stereo images. DiffSteISR utilizes the powerful prior knowledge embedded in pre-trained text-to-image model to efficiently recover the lost texture details in low-resolution stereo images. Specifically, DiffSteISR implements a time-aware stereo cross attention with temperature adapter (TASCATA) to guide the diffusion process, ensuring that the generated left and right views exhibit high texture consistency thereby reducing disparity error between the super-resolved images and the ground truth (GT) images. Additionally, a stereo omni attention control network (SOA ControlNet) is proposed to enhance the consistency of super-resolved images with GT images in the pixel, perceptual, and distribution space. Finally, DiffSteISR incorporates a stereo semantic extractor (SSE) to capture unique viewpoint soft semantic information and shared hard tag semantic information, thereby effectively improving the semantic accuracy and consistency of the generated left and right images. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that DiffSteISR accurately reconstructs natural and precise textures from low-resolution stereo images while maintaining a high consistency of semantic and texture between the left and right views.

CorrAdaptor: Adaptive Local Context Learning for Correspondence Pruning

In the fields of computer vision and robotics, accurate pixel-level correspondences are essential for enabling advanced tasks such as structure-from-motion and simultaneous localization and mapping. Recent correspondence pruning methods usually focus on learning local consistency through k-nearest neighbors, which makes it difficult to capture robust context for each correspondence. We propose CorrAdaptor, a novel architecture that introduces a dual-branch structure capable of adaptively adjusting local contexts through both explicit and implicit local graph learning. Specifically, the explicit branch uses KNN-based graphs tailored for initial neighborhood identification, while the implicit branch leverages a learnable matrix to softly assign neighbors and adaptively expand the local context scope, significantly enhancing the model's robustness and adaptability to complex image variations. Moreover, we design a motion injection module to integrate motion consistency into the network to suppress the impact of outliers and refine local context learning, resulting in substantial performance improvements. The experimental results on extensive correspondence-based tasks indicate that our CorrAdaptor achieves state-of-the-art performance both qualitatively and quantitatively. The code and pre-trained models are available at https://github.com/TaoWangzj/CorrAdaptor.

P/D-Serve: Serving Disaggregated Large Language Model at Scale

Serving disaggregated large language models (LLMs) over tens of thousands of xPU devices (GPUs or NPUs) with reliable performance faces multiple challenges. 1) Ignoring the diversity (various prefixes and tidal requests), treating all the prompts in a mixed pool is inadequate. To facilitate the similarity per scenario and minimize the inner mismatch on P/D (prefill and decoding) processing, fine-grained organization is required, dynamically adjusting P/D ratios for better performance. 2) Due to inaccurate estimation on workload (queue status or maintained connections), the global scheduler easily incurs unnecessary timeouts in prefill. 3) Block-fixed device-to-device (D2D) KVCache transfer over cluster-level RDMA (remote direct memory access) fails to achieve desired D2D utilization as expected. To overcome previous problems, this paper proposes an end-to-end system P/D-Serve, complying with the paradigm of MLOps (machine learning operations), which models end-to-end (E2E) P/D performance and enables: 1) fine-grained P/D organization, mapping the service with RoCE (RDMA over converged ethernet) as needed, to facilitate similar processing and dynamic adjustments on P/D ratios; 2) on-demand forwarding upon rejections for idle prefill, decoupling the scheduler from regular inaccurate reports and local queues, to avoid timeouts in prefill; and 3) efficient KVCache transfer via optimized D2D access. P/D-Serve is implemented upon Ascend and MindSpore, has been deployed over tens of thousands of NPUs for more than eight months in commercial use, and further achieves 60\%, 42\% and 46\% improvements on E2E throughput, time-to-first-token (TTFT) SLO (service level objective) and D2D transfer time. As the E2E system with optimizations, P/D-Serve achieves 6.7x increase on throughput, compared with aggregated LLMs.

Black holes regulate cool gas accretion in massive galaxies

The nucleus of almost all massive galaxies contains a supermassive black hole (BH). The feedback from the accretion of these BHs is often considered to have crucial roles in establishing the quiescence of massive galaxies, although some recent studies show that even galaxies hosting the most active BHs do not exhibit a reduction in their molecular gas reservoirs or star formation rates. Therefore, the influence of BHs on galaxy star formation remains highly debated and lacks direct evidence. Here, based on a large sample of nearby galaxies with measurements of masses of both BHs and atomic hydrogen (HI), the main component of the interstellar medium, we show that the HI gas mass to stellar masses ratio ($μ_{\rm HI} = M_{\rm HI}/M_{\star}$) is more strongly correlated with BH masses ($M_{\rm BH}$) than with any other galaxy parameters, including stellar mass, stellar mass surface density and bulge masses. Moreover, once the $μ_{\rm HI}-M_{\rm BH}$ correlation is considered, $μ_{\rm HI}$ loses dependence on other galactic parameters, demonstrating that $M_{\rm BH}$ serves as the primary driver of $μ_{\rm HI}$. These findings provide important evidence for how the accumulated energy from BH accretion regulates the cool gas content in galaxies, by ejecting interstellar medium gas and/or suppressing gas cooling from the circumgalactic medium.

Residual Speaker Representation for One-Shot Voice Conversion

Recently, there have been significant advancements in voice conversion, resulting in high-quality performance. However, there are still two critical challenges in this field. Firstly, current voice conversion methods have limited robustness when encountering unseen speakers. Secondly, they also have limited ability to control timbre representation. To address these challenges, this paper presents a novel approach that leverages tokens of multi-layer residual approximations to enhance robustness when dealing with unseen speakers, called the residual speaker module. Introducing multi-layer approximations facilitates the separation of information from the timbre, enabling effective control over timbre in voice conversion. The proposed method outperforms baselines in subjective and objective evaluations, demonstrating superior performance and increased robustness. Our demo page is publicly available.

UnifiedMLLM: Enabling Unified Representation for Multi-modal Multi-tasks With Large Language Model

Significant advancements has recently been achieved in the field of multi-modal large language models (MLLMs), demonstrating their remarkable capabilities in understanding and reasoning across diverse tasks. However, these models are often trained for specific tasks and rely on task-specific input-output formats, limiting their applicability to a broader range of tasks. This raises a fundamental question: Can we develop a unified approach to represent and handle different multi-modal tasks to maximize the generalizability of MLLMs? In this paper, we propose UnifiedMLLM, a comprehensive model designed to represent various tasks using a unified representation. Our model exhibits strong capabilities in comprehending the implicit intent of user instructions and preforming reasoning. In addition to generating textual responses, our model also outputs task tokens and grounding tokens, serving as indicators of task types and task granularity. These outputs are subsequently routed through the task router and directed to specific expert models for task completion. To train our model, we construct a task-specific dataset and an 100k multi-task dataset encompassing complex scenarios. Employing a three-stage training strategy, we equip our model with robust reasoning and task processing capabilities while preserving its generalization capacity and knowledge reservoir. Extensive experiments showcase the impressive performance of our unified representation approach across various tasks, surpassing existing methodologies. Furthermore, our approach exhibits exceptional scalability and generality. Our code, model, and dataset will be available at \url{https://github.com/lzw-lzw/UnifiedMLLM}.

Uniqueness of positive radial solutions of Choquard type equations

In this paper, we consider the following Choquard type equation \begin{equation} \left\{\begin{aligned} &-Δu+λu=γ(Φ_N(|x|)\ast|u|^p)u \ \ \mbox{in $\mathbb{R}^N$}, \\ &\lim\limits_{|x|\to\infty}u(x)=0,\\ \end{aligned}\right. \end{equation} where $N\geq2,λ>0,γ>0, p\in[1,2]$ and $Φ_N(|x|)$ denotes the fundamental solution of the Laplacian $-Δ$ on $\mathbb{R}^N$. This equation does not have a variational frame when $p\neq 2.$ Instead of variational methods, we prove the existence and uniqueness of positive radial solutions of the above equation via the shooting method by establishing some new differential inequalities. The proofs are based on an analysis of the corresponding system of second-order differential equations, and our results extend the existing ones in the literature from $p=2$ to $p\in[1,2]$.

Phase engineering of giant second harmonic generation in Bi$_2$O$_2$Se

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with remarkable second-harmonic generation (SHG) hold promise for future on-chip nonlinear optics. Relevant materials with both giant SHG response and environmental stability are long-sought targets. Here, we demonstrate the enormous SHG from the phase engineering of a high-performance semiconductor, Bi$_2$O$_2$Se (BOS), under uniaxial strain. SHG signals captured in strained 20 nm-BOS films exceed those of NbOI$_2$ and NbOCl$_2$ of similar thickness by a factor of 10, and are four orders of magnitude higher than monolayer-MoS$_2$, resulting in a significant second-order nonlinear susceptibility on the order of 1 nm V$^{-1}$. Intriguingly, the strain enables continuous adjustment of the ferroelectric phase transition across room temperature. Consequently, an exceptionally large tunability of SHG, approximately six orders of magnitude, is achieved through strain or thermal modulation. This colossal SHG, originating from the geometric phase of Bloch wave functions and coupled with sensitive tunability through multiple approaches in this air-stable 2D semiconductor, opens new possibilities for designing chip-scale, switchable nonlinear optical devices.

Continuously Expanding the Response Frequency of Rydberg Atom-Based Microwave Sensor by Using Quantum Mixer

Microwave electric (MW) field measurements utilizing Rydberg atoms have witnessed significant advancements, achieving remarkable sensitivity, albeit limited to discrete MW frequencies resonant with Rydberg states. Recently, various continuous-frequency measurement schemes have emerged. However, when the MW detuning surpasses 1 GHz, the sensitivity degrades by over an order of magnitude compared to resonant measurements. In this paper, we successfully extend the response frequency range by harnessing a controlled driving field in conjunction with a quantum mixer and heterodyne technology, theoretically enabling infinite scalability. Notably, second-order effects stemming from quantum mixing necessitate careful consideration to ensure accurate electric field measurements. In addition, compared to resonant measurements, the sensitivity decline for far-detuned MW fields exceeding 1 GHz is less than twice, representing a significant improvement of several orders of magnitude over alternative schemes. Furthermore, the sensitivity of far-detuned MW fields can be efficiently enhanced by augmenting the intensity and frequency of the controlled field. For detunings ranging from 100 MHz to 2 GHz, we present optimal sensitivity values and the corresponding methods to achieve them. Our findings pave the way for Rydberg atom-based MW receivers characterized by both high sensitivity and an exceptionally broad bandwidth.
