Rapid morphology characterization of two-dimensional TMDs and lateral heterostructures based on deep learning

Two-dimensional (2D) materials and heterostructures exhibit unique physical properties, necessitating efficient and accurate characterization methods. Leveraging advancements in artificial intelligence, we introduce a deep learning-based method for efficiently characterizing heterostructures and 2D materials, specifically MoS2-MoSe2 lateral heterostructures and MoS2 flakes with varying shapes and thicknesses. By utilizing YOLO models, we achieve an accuracy rate of over 94.67% in identifying these materials. Additionally, we explore the application of transfer learning across different materials, which further enhances model performance. This model exhibits robust generalization and anti-interference ability, ensuring reliable results in diverse scenarios. To facilitate practical use, we have developed an application that enables real-time analysis directly from optical microscope images, making the process significantly faster and more cost-effective than traditional methods. This deep learning-driven approach represents a promising tool for the rapid and accurate characterization of 2D materials, opening new avenues for research and development in material science.

The boson number hypothesis and the boson number odd-even effect in $^{196-204}$Hg

In the SU3-IBM the oblate shape is described by the \textrm{SU(3)} third-order Casimir operator in the large-$N$ limit. However for finite $N$, this interaction can produce a boson number odd-even effect. In this Letter, we find that, the unique odd-even effect really exists in the nuclei $^{196-204}$Hg. This finding implies that realistic low-lying excitations are sensitive to certain boson number $N$. The boson number hypothesis is verified for the first time since the advent of the interacting boson model. This also proves the accuracy and validity of the SU3-IBM directly. The SU(3) symmetry and the higher-order interactions are both indispensable for understanding the nuclear quadrupole deformations.

Peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters in a IllustrisTNG simulation based on mock observations of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects

Galaxy clusters are the largest self-gravitational systems in the Universe. They are valuable probes of the structure growth of the Universe when we estimate their peculiar velocities with the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effects. We investigate whether there is a systematic offset between the peculiar velocities ($v_{\rm z,kSZ}$) estimated with the kSZ effect and the true velocities of halos. We first created mocks of the 2D maps of SZ effects in seven frequency bands for galaxy clusters spanning a broad range of masses in TNG 300-3. We then derived the line-of-sight (LOS) peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters by applying an analytical formula to fit the spectra of the SZ effect. We find that the analytical formula-fitting method tends to overestimate the peculiar velocities of galaxy clusters, regardless of whether they approach us or recede from us. However, when galaxy clusters larger than 500 km/s were excluded, the slopes of the relations between $v_{\rm z,kSZ}$ and the real LOS velocities of galaxy clusters ($v_{\rm z,halo}$) were consistent with unity within the errors. Additionally, we further accounted for observational noise for different-aperture telescopes under different precipitable water vapor. The slopes for most cases are consistent with unity within the errors, and the errors of the slopes slightly increase with higher observation noise. The $|v_{\rm z,kSZ}-v_{\rm z,halo}|$ exhibits no obvious trend with increasing concentration and $M_{\rm 200}$. It is noteworthy that the $|v_{\rm z,kSZ}-v_{\rm z,halo}|$ is relatively high for galaxy clusters with strong active galactic nucleus feedback and high star formation rates. This indicates that these physical processes affect the cluster dynamic state and may reflect on the peculiar velocity estimated from the kSZ effect.

DiffBrush:Just Painting the Art by Your Hands

The rapid development of image generation and editing algorithms in recent years has enabled ordinary user to produce realistic images. However, the current AI painting ecosystem predominantly relies on text-driven diffusion models (T2I), which pose challenges in accurately capturing user requirements. Furthermore, achieving compatibility with other modalities incurs substantial training costs. To this end, we introduce DiffBrush, which is compatible with T2I models and allows users to draw and edit images. By manipulating and adapting the internal representation of the diffusion model, DiffBrush guides the model-generated images to converge towards the user's hand-drawn sketches for user's specific needs without additional training. DiffBrush achieves control over the color, semantic, and instance of objects in images by continuously guiding the latent and instance-level attention map during the denoising process of the diffusion model. Besides, we propose a latent regeneration, which refines the randomly sampled noise in the diffusion model, obtaining a better image generation layout. Finally, users only need to roughly draw the mask of the instance (acceptable colors) on the canvas, DiffBrush can naturally generate the corresponding instance at the corresponding location.

Variable degeneracy on toroidal graphs

DP-coloring was introduced by Dvořák and Postle as a generalization of list coloring and signed coloring. A new coloring, strictly $f$-degenerate transversal, is a further generalization of DP-coloring and $L$-forested-coloring. In this paper, we present some structural results on planar and toroidal graphs with forbidden configurations, and establish some sufficient conditions for the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversal based on these structural results. Consequently, (i) every toroidal graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.2 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (ii) every toroidal graph without $4$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$, (iii) every planar graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig.3 is DP-$4$-colorable, and has list vertex arboricity at most $2$. These results improve upon previous results on DP-$4$-coloring [Discrete Math. 341~(7) (2018) 1983--1986; Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc. 43~(3) (2020) 2271--2285] and (list) vertex arboricity [Discrete Math. 333 (2014) 101--105; Int. J. Math. Stat. 16~(1) (2015) 97--105; Iranian Math. Soc. 42~(5) (2016) 1293--1303].

Decomposition of toroidal graphs without some subgraphs

We consider a family of toroidal graphs, denoted by $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$, which contain neither $i$-cycles nor $j$-cycles. A graph $G$ is $(d, h)$-decomposable if it contains a subgraph $H$ with $Δ(H) \leq h$ such that $G - E(H)$ is a $d$-degenerate graph. For each pair $(i, j) \in \{(3, 4), (3, 6), (4, 6), (4, 7)\}$, Lu and Li proved that every graph in $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is $(2, 1)$-decomposable. In this short note, we present a unified approach to prove that a common superclass of $\mathcal{T}_{i, j}$ is also $(2, 1)$-decomposable.

Planar graphs without 4-, 7-, 9-cycles and 5-cycles normally adjacent to 3-cycles

A graph is \emph{$(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable} if its vertex set can be partitioned into two parts such that one part $\mathcal{I}$ is an independent set, and the other $\mathcal{F}$ induces a forest. A graph is \emph{$k$-degenerate} if every subgraph $H$ contains a vertex of degree at most $k$ in $H$. Bernshteyn and Lee defined a generalization of $k$-degenerate graphs, which is called \emph{weakly $k$-degenerate}. In this paper, we show that planar graphs without $4$-, $7$-, $9$-cycles, and $5$-cycles normally adjacent to $3$-cycles are both $(\mathcal{I}, \mathcal{F})$-partitionable and weakly $2$-degenerate.

Variable degeneracy of planar graphs without chorded 6-cycles

A cover of a graph $G$ is a graph $H$ with vertex set $V(H) = \bigcup_{v \in V(G)} L_{v}$, where $L_{v} = \{v\} \times [s]$, and the edge set $M = \bigcup_{uv \in E(G)} M_{uv}$, where $M_{uv}$ is a matching between $L_{u}$ and $L_{v}$. A vertex set $T \subseteq V(H)$ is a transversal of $H$ if $|T \cap L_{v}| = 1$ for each $v \in V(G)$. Let $f$ be a nonnegative integer valued function on the vertex-set of $H$. If for any nonempty subgraph $Γ$ of $H[T]$, there exists a vertex $x \in V(H)$ such that $d(x) < f(x)$, then $T$ is called a strictly $f$-degenerate transversal. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition for the existence of strictly $f$-degenerate transversal for planar graphs without chorded $6$-cycles. As a consequence, every planar graph without subgraphs isomorphic to the configurations in Fig. 4 is DP-$4$-colorable.

Planar graphs with distance of 3-cycles at least 2 and no cycles of lengths 5, 6, 7

Weak degeneracy of a graph is a variation of degeneracy that has a close relationship to many graph coloring parameters. In this article, we prove that planar graphs with distance of $3$-cycles at least 2 and no cycles of lengths $5, 6, 7$ are weakly $2$-degenerate. Furthermore, such graphs can be vertex-partitioned into two subgraphs, one of which has no edges, and the other is a forest.

On odd colorings of sparse graphs

An \emph{odd $c$-coloring} of a graph is a proper $c$-coloring such that each non-isolated vertex has a color appearing an odd number of times within its open neighborhood. A \emph{proper conflict-free $c$-coloring} of a graph is a proper $c$-coloring such that each non-isolated vertex has a color appearing exactly once within its neighborhood. Clearly, every proper conflict-free $c$-coloring is also an odd $c$-coloring. Cranston conjectured that every graph $G$ with maximum average degree $\text{mad}(G) < \frac{4c}{c+2}$ (where $c \geq 4$) has an odd $c$-coloring, and he proved this conjecture for $c \in \{5, 6\}$. Note that the bound $\frac{4c}{c+2}$ is best possible. Cho et al. solved Cranston's conjecture for $c \geq 5$, strengthening the result by transitioning from odd $c$-coloring to proper conflict-free $c$-coloring. However, they did not provide all the extremal non-colorable graphs $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) = \frac{4c}{c+2}$, which remains an open question of interest. In this paper, we tackle this intriguing extremal problem. We aim to characterize all non-proper conflict-free $c$-colorable graphs $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) = \frac{4c}{c+2}$. For the case of $c=4$, Cranston's conjecture is not true, as evidenced by the existence of a counterexample: a graph whose every block is a $5$-cycle. Cho et al.\ proved that a graph $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) < \frac{22}{9}$ and no induced $5$-cycles has an odd $4$-coloring. We improve this result by proving that a graph $G$ with $\text{mad}(G) \leq \frac{22}{9}$ (with equality allowed) is not odd $4$-colorable if and only if $G$ belongs to a specific class of graphs. On the other hand, Cho et al.\ established that a planar graph with girth at least $5$ has an odd $6$-coloring; we improve it by proving that a planar graph without $4^{-}$-cycles adjacent to $7^{-}$-cycles also has an odd $6$-coloring.

Toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and 6-cycles

Cai et al.\ proved that a toroidal graph $G$ without $6$-cycles is $5$-choosable, and proposed the conjecture that $\textsf{ch}(G) = 5$ if and only if $G$ contains a $K_{5}$ [J. Graph Theory 65 (2010) 1--15], where $\textsf{ch}(G)$ is the choice number of $G$. However, Choi later disproved this conjecture, and proved that toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ (a $K_{5}$ missing one edge) and $6$-cycles are $4$-choosable [J. Graph Theory 85 (2017) 172--186]. In this paper, we provide a structural description, for toroidal graphs without $K_{5}^{-}$ and $6$-cycles. Using this structural description, we strengthen Choi's result in two ways: (I) we prove that such graphs have weak degeneracy at most three (nearly $3$-degenerate), and hence their DP-paint numbers and DP-chromatic numbers are at most four; (II) we prove that such graphs have Alon-Tarsi numbers at most $4$. Furthermore, all of our results are sharp in some sense.

IMM-MOT: A Novel 3D Multi-object Tracking Framework with Interacting Multiple Model Filter

3D Multi-Object Tracking (MOT) provides the trajectories of surrounding objects, assisting robots or vehicles in smarter path planning and obstacle avoidance. Existing 3D MOT methods based on the Tracking-by-Detection framework typically use a single motion model to track an object throughout its entire tracking process. However, objects may change their motion patterns due to variations in the surrounding environment. In this paper, we introduce the Interacting Multiple Model filter in IMM-MOT, which accurately fits the complex motion patterns of individual objects, overcoming the limitation of single-model tracking in existing approaches. In addition, we incorporate a Damping Window mechanism into the trajectory lifecycle management, leveraging the continuous association status of trajectories to control their creation and termination, reducing the occurrence of overlooked low-confidence true targets. Furthermore, we propose the Distance-Based Score Enhancement module, which enhances the differentiation between false positives and true positives by adjusting detection scores, thereby improving the effectiveness of the Score Filter. On the NuScenes Val dataset, IMM-MOT outperforms most other single-modal models using 3D point clouds, achieving an AMOTA of 73.8%. Our project is available at https://github.com/Ap01lo/IMM-MOT.

KPIs 2024 Challenge: Advancing Glomerular Segmentation from Patch- to Slide-Level

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health issue, affecting over 10% of the population and causing significant mortality. While kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for CKD diagnosis and treatment, the lack of comprehensive benchmarks for kidney pathology segmentation hinders progress in the field. To address this, we organized the Kidney Pathology Image Segmentation (KPIs) Challenge, introducing a dataset that incorporates preclinical rodent models of CKD with over 10,000 annotated glomeruli from 60+ Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS)-stained whole slide images. The challenge includes two tasks, patch-level segmentation and whole slide image segmentation and detection, evaluated using the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) and F1-score. By encouraging innovative segmentation methods that adapt to diverse CKD models and tissue conditions, the KPIs Challenge aims to advance kidney pathology analysis, establish new benchmarks, and enable precise, large-scale quantification for disease research and diagnosis.

ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey: Physical characterization of near-infrared-dark intrinsically faint ALMA sources at z=2-4

We present results from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) spectral line-scan observations at 3-mm and 2-mm bands of three near-infrared-dark (NIR-dark) galaxies behind two massive lensing clusters MACS J0417.5-1154 and RXC J0032.1+1808. Each of these three sources is a faint (de-lensed $S_{\text{1.2 mm}}$ $<$ 1 mJy) triply lensed system originally discovered in the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey. We have successfully detected CO and [C I] emission lines and confirmed that their spectroscopic redshifts are $z=3.652$, 2.391, and 2.985. By utilizing a rich multi-wavelength data set, we find that the NIR-dark galaxies are located on the star formation main sequence in the intrinsic stellar mass range of log ($M_*$/$M_\odot$) = 9.8 - 10.4, which is about one order of magnitude lower than that of typical submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). These NIR-dark galaxies show a variety in gas depletion times and spatial extent of dust emission. One of the three is a normal star-forming galaxy with gas depletion time consistent with a scaling relation, and its infrared surface brightness is an order of magnitude smaller than that of typical SMGs. Since this galaxy has an elongated axis ratio of $\sim 0.17$, we argue that normal star-forming galaxies in an edge-on configuration can be heavily dust-obscured. This implies that existing deep WFC3/F160W surveys may miss a fraction of typical star-forming main-sequence galaxies due to their edge-on orientation.

Pulsed Vector Atomic Magnetometer Using an Alternating Fast-Rotating Field

We introduce a vector atomic magnetometer that employs a fast-rotating magnetic field applied to a pulsed $^{87}$Rb scalar atomic magnetometer. This approach enables simultaneous measurements of the total magnetic field and its two polar angles relative to the rotation plane. Operating in gradiometer mode, the magnetometer achieves a total field gradient sensitivity of 35 $\mathrm{fT/\sqrt{Hz}}$ (0.7 parts per billion) and angular resolutions of 6 $\mathrm{nrad/\sqrt{Hz}}$ at a 50 $μ$T Earth field strength. The noise spectra remain flat down to 1 Hz and 0.1 Hz, respectively. Here we show that this method overcomes several metrological challenges commonly faced by vector magnetometers and gradiometers. We propose a unique peak-altering modulation technique to mitigate systematic effects, including a newly identified dynamic heading error. Additionally, we establish the fundamental sensitivity limits of the sensor, demonstrating that its vector sensitivity approaches scalar sensitivity while preserving the inherent accuracy and calibration benefits of scalar sensors. This high-dynamic-range, ultrahigh-resolution magnetometer offers exceptional versatility for diverse applications.

How Deep is your Guess? A Fresh Perspective on Deep Learning for Medical Time-Series Imputation

We present a comprehensive analysis of deep learning approaches for Electronic Health Record (EHR) time-series imputation, examining how architectural and framework biases combine to influence model performance. Our investigation reveals varying capabilities of deep imputers in capturing complex spatiotemporal dependencies within EHRs, and that model effectiveness depends on how its combined biases align with medical time-series characteristics. Our experimental evaluation challenges common assumptions about model complexity, demonstrating that larger models do not necessarily improve performance. Rather, carefully designed architectures can better capture the complex patterns inherent in clinical data. The study highlights the need for imputation approaches that prioritise clinically meaningful data reconstruction over statistical accuracy. Our experiments show imputation performance variations of up to 20\% based on preprocessing and implementation choices, emphasising the need for standardised benchmarking methodologies. Finally, we identify critical gaps between current deep imputation methods and medical requirements, highlighting the importance of integrating clinical insights to achieve more reliable imputation approaches for healthcare applications.

Fluctuation theorems in general relativistic stochastic thermodynamics

Based on the recently proposed framework of general relativistic stochastic mechanics [{\em J. Stat. Phys.}, 190:193, 2023; {\em J. Stat. Phys.}, 190:181, 2023] and stochastic thermodynamics [{\em SciPost Physics Core} 7, 082, 2024] at the ensemble level, this work focuses on general relativistic stochastic thermodynamics at the trajectory level. The first law of stochastic thermodynamics is reformulated and the fluctuation theorems are proved on this level, with emphasis on maintaining fully general covariance and on the choice of observers.

Searching radio signals from two magnetars and a high-magnetic field pulsar and the serendipitous discovery of a new radio pulsar PSR J1935+2200

Magnetars are slowly rotating, highly magnetized young neutron stars that can show transient radio phenomena for radio pulses and fast radio bursts. We conducted radio observations of from two magnetars SGR$~$J1935+2154 and 3XMM$~$J185246.6+003317 and a high-magnetic field pulsar PSR$~$J1846$-$0258 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We performed single pulse and periodicity searches and did not detect radio signals from them. From the piggyback data recorded by other FAST telescope beams when we observed the magnetar SGR$~$1935+2154, we serendipitously discovered a new radio pulsar, PSR$~$J1935+2200. We carried out the follow-up observations and obtained the timing solution based on these new observations and the archive FAST data. PSR$~$J1935+2200 is an isolated old pulsar, with a spin period of $0.91$s, a spin-period derivative of $9.19 \times 10^{-15}$~s~s$^{-1}$, and a characteristic age of $1.57$ Myr. It is a weak pulsar with a flux density of 9.8 $μ$Jy at 1.25 GHz. Discovery of a new pulsar from the long FAST observations of 30 minutes implies that there may be more weak older pulsars in the Galactic disk to be discovered.
