The structure of maximal non-trivial d-wise intersecting uniform families with large sizes

For a positive integer $d\geq 2$, a family $\mathcal F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ is said to be d-wise intersecting if $|F_1\cap F_2\cap \dots\cap F_d|\geq 1$ for all $F_1, F_2, \dots ,F_d\in \mathcal F$. A d-wise intersecting family $\mathcal F\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ is called maximal if $\mathcal F\cup\{A\}$ is not d-wise intersecting for any $A\in\binom{[n]}{k}\setminus\mathcal F$. We provide a refinement of O'Neill and Verstraëte's Theorem about the structure of the largest and the second largest maximal non-trivial d-wise intersecting k-uniform families. We also determine the structure of the third largest and the fourth largest maximal non-trivial d-wise intersecting k-uniform families for any $k>d+1\geq 4$, and the fifth largest and the sixth largest maximal non-trivial 3-wise intersecting k-uniform families for any $k\geq 5$, in the asymptotic sense. Our proofs are applications of the $Δ$-system method.

A note on non-empty cross-intersecting families

The families $\mathcal F_1\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k_1},\mathcal F_2\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k_2},\dots,\mathcal F_r\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k_r}$ are said to be cross-intersecting if $|F_i\cap F_j|\geq 1$ for any $1\leq i<j\leq r$ and $F_i\in \mathcal F_i$, $F_j\in\mathcal F_j$. Cross-intersecting families $\mathcal F_1,\mathcal F_2,\dots,\mathcal F_r$ are said to be non-empty if $\mathcal F_i\neq\emptyset$ for any $1\leq i\leq r$. This paper shows that if $\mathcal F_1\subseteq\binom{[n]}{k_1},\mathcal F_2\subseteq\binom{[n]}{k_2},\dots,\mathcal F_r\subseteq\binom{[n]}{k_r}$ are non-empty cross-intersecting families with $k_1\geq k_2\geq\cdots\geq k_r$ and $n\geq k_1+k_2$, then $\sum_{i=1}^{r}|\mathcal F_i|\leq\max\{\binom{n}{k_1}-\binom{n-k_r}{k_1}+\sum_{i=2}^{r}\binom{n-k_r}{k_i-k_r},\ \sum_{i=1}^{r}\binom{n-1}{k_i-1}\}$. This solves a problem posed by Shi, Frankl and Qian recently. The extremal families attaining the upper bounds are also characterized.

On finite generalized quadrangles of even order

In this paper, we establish the following two results: (1) a skew translation generalized quadrangle of even order is a translation generalized quadrangle, (2) a generalized quadrangle of even order does not admit a point regular automorphism group. The first result confirms a conjecture of Payne (1975) based on earlier work of Ott (2021), and the second result confirms a conjecture of Ghinelli (1992).

Perfect state transfer on bi-Cayley graphs over abelian groups

The study of perfect state transfer on graphs has attracted a great deal of attention during the past ten years because of its applications to quantum information processing and quantum computation. Perfect state transfer is understood to be a rare phenomenon. This paper establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for a bi-Cayley graph having perfect state transfer over any given finite abelian group. As corollaries, many known and new results are obtained on Cayley graphs having perfect state transfer over abelian groups, (generalized) dihedral groups, semi-dihedral groups and generalized quaternion groups. Especially, we give an example of a connected non-normal Cayley graph over a dihedral group having perfect state transfer between two distinct vertices, which was thought impossible.

Refined Response Distillation for Class-Incremental Player Detection

Detecting players from sports broadcast videos is essential for intelligent event analysis. However, existing methods assume fixed player categories, incapably accommodating the real-world scenarios where categories continue to evolve. Directly fine-tuning these methods on newly emerging categories also exist the catastrophic forgetting due to the non-stationary distribution. Inspired by recent research on incremental object detection (IOD), we propose a Refined Response Distillation (R^2D) method to effectively mitigate catastrophic forgetting for IOD tasks of the players. Firstly, we design a progressive coarse-to-fine distillation region dividing scheme, separating high-value and low-value regions from classification and regression responses for precise and fine-grained regional knowledge distillation. Subsequently, a tailored refined distillation strategy is developed on regions with varying significance to address the performance limitations posed by pronounced feature homogeneity in the IOD tasks of the players. Furthermore, we present the NBA-IOD and Volleyball-IOD datasets as the benchmark and investigate the IOD tasks of the players systematically. Extensive experiments conducted on benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results. The code and datasets are available at https://github.com/beiyan1911/Players-IOD.

SocialDial: A Benchmark for Socially-Aware Dialogue Systems

Dialogue systems have been widely applied in many scenarios and are now more powerful and ubiquitous than ever before. With large neural models and massive available data, current dialogue systems have access to more knowledge than any people in their life. However, current dialogue systems still do not perform at a human level. One major gap between conversational agents and humans lies in their abilities to be aware of social norms. The development of socially-aware dialogue systems is impeded due to the lack of resources. In this paper, we present the first socially-aware dialogue corpus - SocialDial, based on Chinese social culture. SocialDial consists of two parts: 1,563 multi-turn dialogues between two human speakers with fine-grained labels, and 4,870 synthetic conversations generated by ChatGPT. The human corpus covers five categories of social norms, which have 14 sub-categories in total. Specifically, it contains social factor annotations including social relation, context, social distance, and social norms. However, collecting sufficient socially-aware dialogues is costly. Thus, we harness the power of ChatGPT and devise an ontology-based synthetic data generation framework. This framework is able to generate synthetic data at scale. To ensure the quality of synthetic dialogues, we design several mechanisms for quality control during data collection. Finally, we evaluate our dataset using several pre-trained models, such as BERT and RoBERTa. Comprehensive empirical results based on state-of-the-art neural models demonstrate that modeling of social norms for dialogue systems is a promising research direction. To the best of our knowledge, SocialDial is the first socially-aware dialogue dataset that covers multiple social factors and has fine-grained labels.

On finite generalized quadrangles with $\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)$ as an automorphism group

Let $\mathcal{S}$ be a finite thick generalized quadrangle, and suppose that $G$ is an automorphism group of $\mathcal{S}$. If $G$ acts primitively on both the points and lines of $\mathcal{S}$, then it is known that $G$ must be almost simple. In this paper, we show that if the socle of $G$ is $\mathrm{PSL}(2,q)$ with $q\geq4$, then $q=9$ and $\mathcal{S}$ is the unique generalized quadrangle of order $2$.

Less is More: Mitigate Spurious Correlations for Open-Domain Dialogue Response Generation Models by Causal Discovery

In this paper, we conduct the first study on spurious correlations for open-domain response generation models based on a corpus CGDIALOG curated in our work. The cur rent models indeed suffer from spurious correlations and have a tendency of generating irrelevant and generic responses. Inspired by causal discovery algorithms, we propose a novel model-agnostic method for training and inference of response generation model using a conditional independence classifier. The classifier is trained by a constrained self-training method, coined CONSTRAIN, to overcome data scarcity. The experimental results based on both human and automatic evaluation show that our method significantly outperforms the competitive baselines in terms of relevance, informativeness, and fluency.

Let's Negotiate! A Survey of Negotiation Dialogue Systems

Negotiation is one of the crucial abilities in human communication, and there has been a resurgent research interest in negotiation dialogue systems recently, which goal is to empower intelligent agents with such ability that can efficiently help humans resolve conflicts or reach beneficial agreements. Although there have been many explorations in negotiation dialogue systems, a systematic review of this task has to date remained notably absent. To this end, we aim to fill this gap by reviewing contemporary studies in the emerging field of negotiation dialogue systems, covering benchmarks, evaluations, and methodologies. Furthermore, we also discuss potential future directions, including multi-modal, multi-party, and cross-cultural negotiation scenarios. Our goal is to provide the community with a systematic overview of negotiation dialogue systems and to inspire future research.

Progressive Learning without Forgetting

Learning from changing tasks and sequential experience without forgetting the obtained knowledge is a challenging problem for artificial neural networks. In this work, we focus on two challenging problems in the paradigm of Continual Learning (CL) without involving any old data: (i) the accumulation of catastrophic forgetting caused by the gradually fading knowledge space from which the model learns the previous knowledge; (ii) the uncontrolled tug-of-war dynamics to balance the stability and plasticity during the learning of new tasks. In order to tackle these problems, we present Progressive Learning without Forgetting (PLwF) and a credit assignment regime in the optimizer. PLwF densely introduces model functions from previous tasks to construct a knowledge space such that it contains the most reliable knowledge on each task and the distribution information of different tasks, while credit assignment controls the tug-of-war dynamics by removing gradient conflict through projection. Extensive ablative experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of PLwF and credit assignment. In comparison with other CL methods, we report notably better results even without relying on any raw data.

A topological transition-induced giant transverse thermoelectric effect in polycrystalline Dirac semimetal Mg3Bi2

To achieve thermoelectric energy conversion, a large transverse thermoelectric effect in topological materials is crucial. However, the general relationship between topological electronic structures and transverse thermoelectric effect remains unclear, restricting the rational design of novel transverse thermoelectric materials. Herein, we demonstrate a topological transition-induced giant transverse thermoelectric effect in polycrystalline Mn-doped Mg3+δBi2 material, which has a competitively large transverse thermopower (617 uV/K), power factor (20393 uWm-1K-2), magnetoresistance (16600%), and electronic mobility (35280cm2V-1S-1). The high performance is triggered by the modulation of chemical pressure and disorder effects in the presence of Mn doping, which induces the transition from a topological insulator to a Dirac semimetal. The high-performance polycrystalline Mn-doped Mg3+δ Bi2 described in this work robustly boosts transverse thermoelectric effect through topological phase transition, paving a new avenue for the material design of transverse thermoelectricity.

RLIP: Relational Language-Image Pre-training for Human-Object Interaction Detection

The task of Human-Object Interaction (HOI) detection targets fine-grained visual parsing of humans interacting with their environment, enabling a broad range of applications. Prior work has demonstrated the benefits of effective architecture design and integration of relevant cues for more accurate HOI detection. However, the design of an appropriate pre-training strategy for this task remains underexplored by existing approaches. To address this gap, we propose Relational Language-Image Pre-training (RLIP), a strategy for contrastive pre-training that leverages both entity and relation descriptions. To make effective use of such pre-training, we make three technical contributions: (1) a new Parallel entity detection and Sequential relation inference (ParSe) architecture that enables the use of both entity and relation descriptions during holistically optimized pre-training; (2) a synthetic data generation framework, Label Sequence Extension, that expands the scale of language data available within each minibatch; (3) mechanisms to account for ambiguity, Relation Quality Labels and Relation Pseudo-Labels, to mitigate the influence of ambiguous/noisy samples in the pre-training data. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate the benefits of these contributions, collectively termed RLIP-ParSe, for improved zero-shot, few-shot and fine-tuning HOI detection performance as well as increased robustness to learning from noisy annotations. Code will be available at https://github.com/JacobYuan7/RLIP.

Atomically localized ingredient-dependent interface phonon in heterogeneous solids

Phonons are the primary heat carriers in non-metallic solids. In compositionally heterogeneous materials, the thermal properties are believed to be mainly governed by the disrupted phonon transport due to mass disorder and strain fluctuations, while the effects of compositional fluctuation induced local phonon states are usually ignored. Here, by scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy and sophisticated calculations, we identify the vibrational properties of ingredient-dependent interface phonon modes in AlxGa1-xN and quantify their various contributions to the local interface thermal conductance. We demonstrate that atomic-scale compositional fluctuation has significant influence on the vibrational thermodynamic properties, highly affecting the mode ratio and vibrational amplitude of interface phonon modes and subsequently redistributing their modal contribution to the ITC. Our work provides fundamental insights into understanding of local phonon-boundary interactions in nanoscale inhomogeneities, which reveal new opportunities for optimization of thermal properties via engineering ingredient distribution.

Linear codes associated with the Desarguesian ovoids in $Q^+(7,q)$

The Desarguesian ovoids in the orthogonal polar space $Q^+(7,q)$ with $q$ even have first been introduced by Kantor by examining the $8$-dimensional absolutely irreducible modular representations of $\text{PGL}(2,q^3)$. We investigate this module for all prime power values of $q$. The shortest $\text{PGL}(2,q^3)$-orbit $O$ gives the Desarguesian ovoid in $Q^+(7,q)$ for even $q$ and it is known to give a complete partial ovoid of the symplectic polar space $W(7,q)$ for odd~$q$. We determine the hyperplane sections of $O$. As a corollary, we obtain the parameters $[q^3+1,8,q^3-q^2-q]_q$ and the weight distribution of the associated $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear code $C_O$ and the parameters $[q^3+1,q^3-7,5]_q$ of the dual code $C_O^\perp$ for $q \ge 4$. We also show that both codes $C_O$ and $C_O^\perp$ are length-optimal for all prime power values of $q$.

The existence of cyclic (v,4,1)-designs

Even though Peltesohn proved that a cyclic (v,3,1)-design exists if and only if $v\equiv 1,3\pmod{6}$ as early as 1939, the problem of determining the spectrum of cyclic (v,k,1)-designs with k>3 is far from being settled, even for k=4. This paper shows that a cyclic (v,4,1)-design exists if and only if $v\equiv 1,4\pmod{12}$ and $v\not\in\{16,25,28\}$.
