A post-WMAP perspective on inflation

Recent results from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe have been called a corroboration, or even a confirmation, of inflation. Yet, the results include features that require, at least, a significant distortion of what is usually meant by inflation. At the same time, critics have leveled the charge that inflation is an arbitrarily pliable theory and is therefore beyond proof or disproof. This startling dissonance in attitudes toward inflation seems to have grown out of the lack of a clear framework with which to evaluate the inflationary paradigm. In this rhetorical pamphlet we reexamine the inflationary paradigm, attempt to articulate explicitly how the paradigm and its descendant models are falsifiable, and make a sober assessment of the successes and failures of inflation.

Domain Wall Lattices

We construct lattices with alternating kinks and anti-kinks. The lattice is shown to be stable in certain models. We consider the forces between kinks and antikinks and find that the lattice dynamics is that of a Toda lattice. Such lattices are exotic metastable states in which the system can get trapped during a phase transition.

Triplication of SU(5) monopoles

We investigate all spherically symmetric fundamental monopole solutions with fixed topological charge in the SU(5) --> SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1)/Z_3xZ_2 symmetry breaking. We find that there is three-fold replication of the monopoles. The three copies correspond to bound states with ``monopole clouds'' arising from the non-Abelian nature of the SU(3) factor. The triplication of monopoles could help us understand the observed family structure of standard model particles.

Signatures of primordial helicity in the CMBR

We have studied ways in which helical primordial magnetic fields could be constrained by measurements of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR). If there were helical flows in the primordial plasma at the time of recombination, they would produce parity violating temperature-polarization correlations ($C_l^{TB}$ and $C_l^{EB}$). However, the magnitude of helical flows induced by helical magnetic fields is unobservably small. We discuss an alternate scheme for extracting the helicity of a stochastically homogeneous and isotropic primordial magnetic field using Faraday rotation measure maps of the CMBR and the power spectrum of B-type polarization ($C_l^{BB}$).

Band structure in classical field theory

Stability and instability bands in classical mechanics are well-studied in connection with systems such as described by the Mathieu equation. We examine whether such band structure can arise in classical field theory in the context of an embedded kink in 1+1 dimensions. The static embedded kink is unstable to perturbations but we show that if the kink is dynamic it can exhibit stability in certain parameter bands. Our results are relevant for estimating the lifetimes of various embedded defects and, in particular, loops of electroweak Z-string.

Bound states in bottomless potentials

We consider classical and quantum dynamics on potentials that are asymptotically unbounded from below. By explicit construction we find that quantum bound states can exist in certain bottomless potentials. The classical dynamics in these potentials is novel. Only a set of zero measure of classical trajectories can escape to infinity. All other trajectories get trapped as they get further out into the asymptotic region.

Zero modes of fermions with general mass matrix

We analyze zero energy solutions of the Dirac equation in the background of a string-like configuration in an extension of the standard model which accommodates the most general fermionic mass matrix for neutrinos. If either the left- or the right-handed Majorana mass vanishes, neutrino and electron zero modes are found to exist. If the harmonic mean of the neutrino Majorana masses is large compared to the Dirac mass, we can prove that normalizable neutrino zero modes cease to exist. This leads to an odd number of fermionic zero modes -- namely, only the electron zero mode -- which we argue implies that the bosonic background is in a topologically distinct sector from the vacuum. This is confirmed by noting that the bosonic sector of the model involves the breaking of a global U(1) symmetry and hence possesses topological global U(1) strings.

Signatures of kinetic and magnetic helicity in the CMBR

P and CP violation in cosmology can be manifested as large-scale helical velocity flows in the ambient plasma and as primordial helical magnetic fields. We show that kinetic helicity at last scattering leads to temperature-polarization correlations ($C_l^{TB}$ and $C_l^{EB}$) in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) and calculate the magnitude of the effect. Helical primordial magnetic fields, expected from cosmic events such as electroweak baryogenesis, can lead to helical velocity flows and hence to non-vanishing correlations of the temperature and B-type polarization. However we show that the magnitude of the induced helical flow is unobservably small because the helical component of a magnetic field is almost force-free. We discuss an alternate scheme for extracting the helicity of a stochastically homogeneous and isotropic primordial magnetic field using observations of the CMBR. The scheme involves constructing Faraday rotation measure maps of the CMBR and thus determining the sum of the helical and non-helical components of the primordial magnetic field. The power spectrum of B-type polarization fluctuations, on the other hand, are sensitive only to the non-helical component of the primordial magnetic field. The primordial magnetic helicity can then be derived by combining these two sets of observations.

Primordial magnetic fields and CP violation in the sky

It has been argued that electroweak baryogenesis generates a left-handed primordial magnetic field. The helicity density of the primordial magnetic field today is estimated to be $\sim 10^2 n_b$ where $n_b\sim 10^{-6}$ /cm$^3$ is the present cosmological baryon number density. With certain assumptions about the inverse cascade the field strength at recombination is $\sim 10^{-13}$ G on a coherence scale $\sim 10^{-4}$ pc. Here I discuss the various assumptions made in obtaining these estimates and the concomitant open issues.

Estimate of the primordial magnetic field helicity

Electroweak baryogenesis proceeds via changes in the non-Abelian Chern-Simons number. It is argued that these changes generate a primordial magnetic field with left-handed helicity. The helicity density of the primordial magnetic field today is then estimated to be given by $\sim 10^2 n_b$ where $n_b\sim 10^{-6}$ /cm$^3$ is the present cosmological baryon number density. With certain assumptions about the inverse cascade we find that the field strength at recombination is $\sim 10^{-13}$ G on a comoving coherence scale $\sim 0.1$ pc.

Space of kink solutions in SU(N)\times Z_2

We find $(N+1)/2$ distinct classes (``generations'') of kink solutions in an $SU(N)\times Z_2$ field theory. The classes are labeled by an integer $q$. The members of one class of kinks will be globally stable while those of the other classes may be locally stable or unstable. The kink solutions in the $q^{th}$ class have a continuous degeneracy given by the manifold $Σ_q=H/K_q$, where $H$ is the unbroken symmetry group and $K_q$ is the group under which the kink solution remains invariant. The space $Σ_q$ is found to contain incontractable two spheres for some values of $q$, indicating the possible existence of certain incontractable spherical structures in three dimensions. We explicitly construct the three classes of kinks in an SU(5) model with quartic potential and discuss the extension of these ideas to magnetic monopole solutions in the model.

A class of kinks in SU(N)\times Z_2

In a classical, quartic field theory with $SU(N) \times Z_2$ symmetry, a class of kink solutions can be found analytically for one special choice of parameters. We construct these solutions and determine their energies. In the limit $N\to \infty$, the energy of the kink is equal to that of a kink in a $Z_2$ model with the same mass parameter and quartic coupling (coefficient of ${\rm Tr}(Φ^4)$). We prove the stability of the solutions to small perturbations but global stability remains unproven. We then argue that the continuum of choices for the boundary conditions leads to a whole space of kink solutions. The kinks in this space occur in classes that are determined by the chosen boundary conditions. Each class is described by the coset space $H/I$ where $H$ is the unbroken symmetry group and $I$ is the symmetry group that leaves the kink solution invariant.

Neutrino Zero Modes on Electroweak Strings

Zero modes of massive standard model fermions have been found on electroweak Z-strings. A zero mode solution for a massless left-handed neutrino is also known, but was thought to be non-normalizable. Here we show that although this mode is not discretely normalizable, it is delta-function normalizable and the correct interpretation of this solution is within the framework of the continuum spectrum. We also analyze an extension of the standard model including right-handed neutrinos in which neutrinos have Dirac masses, arising from a Yukawa coupling to the usual SU(2) Higgs doublet, and right-handed Majorana masses. The Majorana mass terms are taken to be spatially homogeneous and are presumed to arise from the vacuum expectation value of some field acquired in a phase transition well above the electroweak phase transition. The resulting zero energy equations have a discrete zero mode.

Domain Walls in SU(5)

We consider the Grand Unified SU(5) model with a small or vanishing cubic term in the adjoint scalar field in the potential. This gives the model an approximate or exact Z$_2$ symmetry whose breaking leads to domain walls. The simplest domain wall has the structure of a kink across which the Higgs field changes sign ($Φ\to -Φ$) and inside which the full SU(5) is restored. The kink is shown to be perturbatively unstable for all parameters. We then construct a domain wall solution that is lighter than the kink and show it to be perturbatively stable for a range of parameters. The symmetry in the core of this domain wall is smaller than that outside. The interactions of the domain wall with magnetic monopole is discussed and it is shown that magnetic monopoles with certain internal space orientations relative to the wall pass through the domain wall. Magnetic monopoles in other relative internal space orientations are likely to be swept away on collision with the domain walls, suggesting a scenario where the domain walls might act like optical polarization filters, allowing certain monopole ``polarizations'' to pass through but not others. As SU(5) domain walls will also be formed at small values of the cubic coupling, this leads to a very complicated picture of the evolution of defects after the Grand Unified phase transition.

Spin and Dualization of SU(5) Dyons

Motivated by the dual standard model, we study the angular momentum spectrum of stable SU(5) dyons that can be transformed into purely electric states by a suitable duality rotation i.e. are dualizable. The problem reduces to solving a Diophantine equation for the holomorphic charges in each topological sector, but the solutions also have to satisfy certain constraints. We show that these equations can be solved and sets of dualizable, half-integer spin SU(5) dyons can be found, each of which corresponds to a single family of the standard model fermions. We then find two predictions of the dual standard model. First, the family of half-integer spin, dualizable dyons is accompanied by a set of dualizable, integer-spin partner states. Secondly, the dyon corresponding to the electron must necessarily contain non-trivial color internal structure. In addition, we provide other general results regarding the spectrum of dualizable dyons and their novel properties, and extend the stability analysis of SU(5) monopoles used in the dual standard model so far to discuss the stability of the half-integer spin dyons.

Interaction of Magnetic Monopoles and Domain Walls

We study the interaction of magnetic monopoles and domain walls in a model with SU(5)\times Z_2 symmetry by numerically evolving the field equations. We find that the monopoles unwind and dissipate their magnetic energy on collision with domain walls within which the full SU(5) symmetry is restored.
