Gravitational Lensing Signature of Long Cosmic Strings

The gravitational lensing by long, wiggly cosmic strings is shown to produce a large number of lensed images of a background source. In addition to pairs of images on either side of the string, a number of small images outline the string due to small-scale structure on the string. This image pattern could provide a highly distinctive signature of cosmic strings. Since the optical depth for multiple imaging of distant quasar sources by long strings may be comparable to that by galaxies, these image patterns should be clearly observable in the next generation of redshift surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Comment on ``Constraints on the strength of primordial B-fields from big bang nucleosynthesis reexamined''

Recently Cheng, Olinto, Schramm and Truran (COST) reexamined the constraints from big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) on the strength of primordial magnetic fields. Their bottom line agreed with that of an earlier recent paper on the subject (Kernan, Starkman and Vachaspati (KSV)), both in its final limit on the magnetic field during BBN, and in its conclusion that for allowed values of the magnetic field the dominant factor for BBN is the increased expansion rate at a given temperature caused by the energy density of the magnetic field, $B^2/8π$. However, their conclusion that weak interaction rates increased with increasing B-field at these low field values contradicted the earlier results of KSV. In this comment we point out that the Taylor series expansion of the weak interaction rate about B=0 used in COST is not well-defined, while the Euler-McLaurin expansion of KSV is well-behaved and reliable. Using the Euler-McLaurin expansion we find that the weak interaction rates decrease rather than increase with increasing B-field at small values of the B-field.

Family Replication in the Dual Standard Model

The family replication problem is addressed in the context of the dual standard model. The breaking of a simple grand unified group to $[G_{low} \times H_1 \times H_2 \times H_3]/Z_5^3$ and then further to $G_{low}$, produces a spectrum of stable monopoles that fall in three families each of whose magnetic quantum numbers correspond to the electric charges on the fermions of the Standard Model. Here $G_{low}=[SU(3) \times SU(2) \times U(1)]/Z_6$ is the symmetry group of the standard model above the weak scale, and $H_i$ are simple Lie groups which each have a $Z_5$ symmetry in common with $G_{low}$.

Gravitational Lensing by Cosmic String Loops

We calculate the deflection of a light ray caused by the gravitational field of a cosmic string loop in the weak field limit and reduce the problem to a single quadrature over a time slice of the loop's world sheet. We then apply this formalism to the problem of gravitational lensing by cosmic string loops. In particular, we find an analytic solution for the special case of a circular loop perpendicular to the optical axis. As examples of more complicated loops, we consider two loops with higher frequency Fourier modes. The numerical analysis illustrates the general features of loop lenses. Our estimates, using typical parameters for GUT scale loops, show that the stringy nature of loop lenses can be observed for lensing systems involving high redshift galaxies ($z \sim 2$), and we suggest that gravitational lensing can confirm the existence of GUT scale strings if they are the seeds for large scale structure formation.

Galactic Cosmic Strings as Sources of Primary Antiprotons

A possible signature of a class of superconducting cosmic strings trapped in the Milky Way plasma is the emission of low energy antiprotons due to baryon number violating processes on the string. We find the terrestrial flux and the energy spectrum of such antiprotons. Current observational bounds on the flux of low energy antiprotons place a {\it lower} bound on the string tension which is comparable to that given by the electroweak scale.

Perturbed Electroweak Strings and Fermion Zero Modes

The effect of perturbations of electroweak strings on quark zero modes is studied in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. As first discovered by Naculich, it is found that the bosonic perturbations that destabilize the string give a mass to the zero modes and also lift their degeneracy. The effect of the zero modes on the stability of the string is discussed qualitatively and we argue that the fermionic vacuum instability found by Naculich should lead to a distortion of the bosonic string but not be responsible for decay.

Aspects of ${}^3$He and the Standard Electroweak Model

We describe certain aspects of ${}^3He$ and compare them to related aspects of the standard electroweak model of particle physics. We note various similarities in the order parameter structure, defect structure, interactions with fermions and anomalies in the two systems. Many issues in the condensed matter literature that are often confusing to the particle physics reader and vice versa are clarified.

Topological Incarnations of Electroweak Defects

We propose a criterion to classify hybrid defects occurring in field theoretic models such as the standard electroweak model. This criterion leads us to consider the minimal extension of the electroweak model in which electroweak magnetic monopoles and $Z$-strings are topological. We briefly discuss the cosmology of such defects.

Defect Production in Slow First Order Phase Transitions

We study the formation of vortices in a U(1) gauge theory following a first-order transition proceeding by bubble nucleation, in particular the effect of a low velocity of expansion of the bubble walls. To do this, we use a two-dimensional model in which bubbles are nucleated at random points in a plane and at random times and then expand at some velocity $v_{\rm b}<c$. Within each bubble, the phase angle is assigned one of three discrete values. When bubbles collide, magnetic `fluxons' appear: if the phases are different, a fluxon--anti-fluxon pair is formed. These fluxons are eventually trapped in three-bubble collisions when they may annihilate or form quantized vortices. We study in particular the effect of changing the bubble expansion speed on the vortex density and the extent of vortex--anti-vortex correlation.

Zero Modes on Linked Strings

We study linked loops of string in the presence of bosonic condensates and fermionic zero modes on the strings. We find that the strings necessarily carry a current if the bosons have an Aharanov-Bohm interaction with the string. The fermionic case is analyzed in the context of the standard model where there are lepton and quark zero modes on $Z-$strings. Here we find that the fermionic ground state in the linked string background is lower than the ground state when the loops are unlinked but otherwise identical. As in the bosonic case, the $Z-$strings carry a non-vanishing electric current in the ground state. The baryon number of the linked configuration is found to agree with previous indirect results. We also evaluate the angular momentum, electromagnetic charge and baryonic three current on the linked $Z-$string configuration. Finally we point out a possible gravitational analogue of the linked string system.

Electroweak Strings, Zero Modes and Baryon Number

The Dirac equations for leptons and quarks in the background of an electroweak $Z-$string have zero mode solutions. If two loops of electroweak string are linked, the zero modes on one of the loops interacts with the other loop via an Aharanov-Bohm interaction. The effects of this interaction are briefly discussed and it is shown that the fermions induce a baryon number on linked loops of $Z-$string. (Submitted to Proceedings of "Trends in Astrophysics" Conference, Stockholm, 1994.)

Electroweak Strings, Sphalerons and Magnetic Fields

We describe electroweak strings and their ability to carry Chern-Simons number. Certain string configurations, for any $θ_W$, carry Chern-Simons number equal to that of the sphaleron and we conjecture that such strings are ``extended sphalerons''. The production of electroweak strings during the phase transition is discussed and it is suggested that electroweak strings could survive long enough for them to play a role in baryogenesis. Finally the issue of magnetic field generation during the electroweak phase transition is addressed and several points not discussed in the existing literature are clarified. A connection is made between electroweak strings and magnetic fields produced at the phase transition. (Based on the talk presented at the NATO workshop on ``Electroweak Physics and the Early Universe'', in Sintra, March 1994)

Electroweak Dyons

We consider dyon configurations in the standard electroweak model. In the presence of a $θ$ term and no fermions, the usual result $q = (n+θ/2π) e$ is obtained for the electric charge spectrum. The effect of including standard model fermions is discussed qualitatively.

Electroweak String Configurations with Baryon Number

In the context of electroweak strings, the baryon number anomaly equation may be reinterpreted as a conservation law for baryon number minus helicity. Since the helicity is a sum of the link and twist numbers, linked or twisted loops of electroweak string carry baryon number. We evaluate the change in the baryon number obtained by delinking loops of electroweak $Z-$string and show that twisted electroweak string segments may be regarded as extended sphalerons. We also suggest an alternative scenario for electroweak baryogenesis.

Production of Vortices by Scattering Particles

We give an action that can be used to describe the production of global vortices in 2+1 dimensions by scattering Nambu-Goldstone bosons. At strong self-coupling the action reduces to scalar QED with particular values of the coupling constants and the production cross-section is explicitly found. We also consider the production of gauged vortices by scattering particles that have an Aharanov-Bohm interaction with the vortex.

Embedded Defects

We give a prescription for embedding classical solutions and, in particular, topological defects in field theories which are invariant under symmetry groups that are not necessarily simple. After providing examples of embedded defects in field theories based on simple groups, we consider the electroweak model and show that it contains the $Z$ string and a one parameter family of strings called the $W(α)$ string. It is argued that, although the members of this family are gauge equivalent when considered in isolation, each member should be considered distinct when multi-string solutions are considered. We then turn to the issue of stability of embedded defects and demonstrate the instability of a large class of such solutions in the absence of bound states or condensates. The $Z$ string is shown to be unstable when the Weinberg angle ($θ_w$) is $π/4$ for all values of the Higgs mass. The $W$ strings are also shown to be unstable for a large range of parameters. Embedded monopoles suffer from the Brandt-Neri-Coleman instability. A simple physical understanding of this instability is provided in terms of the phenomenon of W-condensation. Finally, we connect the electroweak string solutions to the sphaleron: ``twisted'' loops of W string and finite segments of W and Z strings collapse into the sphaleron configuration, at least, for small values of $θ_w$.
