Dissipation stabilizes Dicke Time Quasicrystals

Quasi-periodic driving protocols provide a powerful route to realize novel non-equilibrium phases of matter beyond the Floquet paradigm. However, these protocols inevitably lead to infinite-temperature heat death in isolated systems, which poses a major challenge to their experimental realization. We demonstrate that dissipation can be harnessed to stabilize quasi-periodically driven systems, enabling the realization of robust non-equilibrium phases. Using the paradigmatic open Dicke model, we provide a blueprint for realizing a stable time quasicrystal (TQC) by Fibonacci driving. This TQC is characterized by a robust sub-harmonic quasi-periodic response that is dictated by, but qualitatively distinct from the external Fibonacci drive. By directly analyzing the time evolution in the thermodynamic limit, we establish the existence of TQC order in this system for a wide parameter regime. We trace the origin of the stability of the TQC to the attractor structure induced by dissipation. Strikingly, the TQC order persists in the deep quantum regime with as few as two qubits. We systematically study the dependence of the TQC lifetime, $\tau^{\ast}$, on the number of qubits and demonstrate that $\tau^{\ast}$ increases monotonically with the system size. Crucially, the TQC is not observed in the absence of dissipation. Our work establishes dissipation as a mechanism for stabilizing non-equilibrium phases of matter under quasi-periodic drive.

Entanglement marker for lifetime of time crystal in transmon-modulated open Dicke model

We investigate the discrete time crystal (DTC) phase in a qubit ensemble, periodically driven by its interaction with either a photon or a transmon field, which is prone to dissipative leakage. We find this DTC to be robust against changes in detuning and anharmonicity of the field mode. Additionally, we study the system in the semiclassical limit, where mean-field approximations are valid, and demonstrate the utility of a suitable semiclassical Hamiltonian for this purpose. Intriguingly, we observe that the system exhibits a transient DTC even with only two qubits. We examine the dynamics of bipartite entanglement between the qubits and the field. Our findings show that the entanglement saturates to a steady value early in the dynamics, following a sudden peak. We find a strong positive correlation between this long-term entanglement value and the lifetime of the transient DTC, in a wide range of the parameter regime where the field is due to a lossy photon or a lossy transmon mode, with small detuning.

Kerr-type nonlinear baths enhance cooling in quantum refrigerators

We study the self-contained three-qubit quantum refrigerator, with a three-body interaction enabling cooling of the target qubit, in presence of baths composed of anharmonic quantum oscillators with Kerr-type nonlinearity. We show that such baths, locally connected to the three qubits, opens up the opportunity to implement superior steady-state cooling compared to using harmonic oscillator baths, aiding in access to the free energy required for empowering the refrigerator function autonomously. We find that in spite of providing significant primacy in steady-state cooling, such anharmonic baths do not impart much edge over using harmonic oscillator baths if one targets transient cooling. However, we gain access to steady-state cooling in the parameter region where only transient cooling could be achieved by using harmonic baths. Subsequently, we also study the scaling of steady-state cooling advantage and the minimum attainable temperature for varying levels of anharmonicity present in the bath oscillators. Finally, we analyse heat currents and coefficients of performance of quantum refrigerators using bath modes involving Kerr-type nonlinearity, and present a comparison with the case of using bosonic baths made of simple harmonic oscillators. On the way, we derive the decay rates in the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad quantum master equation for Kerr-type anharmonic oscillator baths.

Optimal quantum resource generation in coupled transmons immersed in Markovian baths

We analyze the quantum resource generation of capacitively-coupled multilevel transmon circuits surrounded by bosonic baths, within the Markovian limit. In practice, the superconducting circuit elements are usually part of a larger circuit, constructed with many other linear circuit elements, which along with their environment is assumed to be mimicked by the baths. We study the response to variation of the coupling strength of resource generation for thee system prepared in zero-resource initial states. We focus, in particular, on entanglement and quantum coherence as resources. We quantify the entanglement generation power of coupled transmon qutrits, taking into account the maximum entanglement the system can generate and the time-scale over which the system can sustain a significant entanglement. We identify the optimal initial separable states leading to maximum entanglement generating power.

Estimating quantum coherence by noncommutativity of any observable and its incoherent part

We establish a lower bound on the quantum coherence of an arbitrary quantum state in arbitrary dimension, using a noncommutativity estimator of an arbitrary observable of sub-unit norm, where the estimator is the commutator of the observable and its incoherent or classical part. The relation provides a direct method of obtaining an estimate of the quantum coherence of an arbitrary quantum state, without resorting to quantum state tomography or the existing witness operators.
