Ramanujan Challenge Results: AI-Assisted Evaluation Pipeline for Multi-Format Proofs

As AI's mathematical capabilities rapidly improve, meaningful benchmarks are shifting from university-level problems and math olympiads to research-level mathematics. The Ramanujan Challenge is a benchmark comprised of research-level problems in number theory, including unpublished results and open conjectures. It presented concrete formulas for mathematical constants whose correctness can be checked numerically, while their proofs may require non-obvious mathematics. Here, we analyze the Challenge submissions, measuring the relative success of different AI models, Computer Algebra Systems (CAS), and formal tools. We find correct submissions that are conceptually distinct from the official solutions, and a proof of one of the published open conjectures. Evaluating the submissions exposed a second challenge: judging complex proofs reliably at scale. We introduce an AI-assisted evaluation pipeline for natural language proofs, CAS code, and Lean formalizations that assesses semantic and logical correctness. Compared with the conventional one-shot LLM judgment, our pipeline reduces false-positive verdicts on natural language proofs from 23% to 6% and improves judgment accuracy on supporting code from 46% to 58%. This approach provides a methodology for evaluating research-level mathematics at scale, with potential applications across mathematics and AI for science.

An Infinite Family of Apéry-like Recurrences for Euler's Constant

Euler's constant $γ$, also known as the Euler-Mascheroni constant, remains one of the most elusive constants in mathematics. Despite extensive study, its irrationality is still unproven, and Apéry-like approximations of it are remarkably scarce. We present a novel identity that expresses $γ$ in terms of a Meijer G-function and its first few derivatives. This identity is then generalized and used to systematically generate infinitely many Apéry-like approximations of $γ$ using a Conservative Matrix Field construction based on the Meijer G-function.

The Ramanujan Challenge For AI

To help evaluate the mathematical skills of current AI systems, we present a set of formulas for fundamental mathematical constants. These problems are attractive for AI evaluation because they are concrete and can be checked numerically to arbitrary precision, yet proving them may require non-obvious mathematics. Mathematical constants such as $π$, $e$, Catalan's constant, and special values of the Riemann zeta function have fascinated mathematicians for centuries. The search for formulas evaluating mathematical constants has produced some of the most beautiful mathematics in the field, especially in cases that yield irrationality proofs or fast convergence rates. Ramanujan's legacy is emblematic of this tradition. The list we provide contains two types of problems: formulas whose proofs are known to the authors but will remain encrypted for a short initial period; and formulas that are not yet proven. We are curious to see the achievements of AI in both cases.

Symmetric Galois Groups Under Specialization

Given an irreducible bivariate polynomial $f(t,x)\in \mathbb{Q}[t,x]$, what groups $H$ appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$ for infinitely many $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? How often does a group $H$ as above appear as the Galois group of $f(t_0,x)$, $t_0\in \mathbb{Q}$? We give an answer for $f$ of large $x$-degree with alternating or symmetric Galois group over $\mathbb{Q}(t)$. This is done by determining the low genus subcovers of coverings $\tilde{X}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}}$ with alternating or symmetric monodromy groups.
