UV stability of 1-loop radiative corrections in higher-derivative scalar field theory

We consider the theory of a higher-derivative (HD) real scalar field $\phi$ coupled to a complex scalar $\sigma$, the coupling of the $\phi$ and $\sigma$ being given by two types, $\lambda_{\sigma\phi}\sigma^\dagger \sigma\phi^{2}$ and $\xi_{\sigma\phi}\sigma^\dagger \sigma\left(\partial_{\mu}\phi\right)^{2}$. We evaluate $\phi$ one-loop corrections $\delta V(\sigma)$ to the effective potential of $\sigma$, both the contribution from the positive norm part of $\phi$ and that from the {\it negative norm part} (ghost). We show that $\delta V(\sigma_{\rm cl})$ at $\sigma_{\rm cl}\to \infty$, where $\sigma_{\rm cl}$ is a classical value of $\sigma$, is positive, implying the stability of $\delta V(\sigma_{\rm cl})$ by the HD 1-loop radiative corrections at high energy.

High-energy properties of the graviton scattering in quadratic gravity

We obtain the matter-graviton scattering amplitude in the gravitational theory of quadratic curvature, which has $R_{\mu\nu}^2$ term in the action. Unitarity bound is not satisfied because of the existence of negative norm states, while an analog of unitarity bound for $S$-matrix unitarity holds due to the cancelation among the positive norm states and negative norm ones in the unitarity summation in the optical theorem. The violation of unitarity bound is a counter example of Llewellyn Smith's conjecture on the relation between tree-level unitarity and renormalizability. We have recently proposed a new conjecture that an analog of the unitarity bound for $S$-matrix unitarity gives the equivalent conditions to those for renormalizability. We show that the gravitational theory of quadratic curvature is a nontrivial example consistent with our conjecture.

Heavy particle non-decoupling in flavor-changing gravitational interactions

The flavor-changing gravitational process d --> s + graviton, is evaluated at the one-loop level in the standard electroweak theory with on-shell renormalization. The results we present in the 't Hooft-Feynman gauge are valid for on- and off-shell quarks and for all external and internal quark masses. We show that there exist non-decoupling effects of the internal heavy top quark in interactions with gravity. A naive argument taking account of the quark Yukawa coupling suggests that the amplitude of the process d --> s + graviton in the large top quark mass limit would possibly acquire an enhancement factor $m_{t}^{2}/M_{W}^{2}$, where $m_{t}$ and $M_{W}$ are the top quark and the W-boson masses, respectively. In practice this leading enhancement is absent in the renormalized amplitude due to cancellation. Thus the non-decoupling of the internal top quark takes place at the $O(1)$ level. The flavor-changing two- and three-point functions are shown to satisfy the Ward-Takahashi identity, which is used for a consistency-check of the aforementioned cancellation of the $O(m_{t}^{2}/M_{W}^{2})$ terms. Among the $O(1)$ non-decoupling terms, we sort out those that can be regarded as due to the effective Lagrangian in which quark bilinear forms are coupled to the scalar curvature.

Perturbative $S$-matrix unitarity ($S^{\dagger}S=1$) in $R_{\mu \nu} ^2$ gravity

We show that in the quadratic curvature theory of gravity, or simply $R_{\mu \nu} ^2$ gravity, the tree-level unitariy bound (tree unitarity) is violated in the UV region but an analog for $S$-matrix unitarity ($SS^{\dagger} = 1$) is satisfied. This theory is renormalizable, and hence the failure of tree unitarity is a counter example of Llewellyn Smith's conjecture on the relation between them. We have recently proposed a new conjecture that $S$-matrix unitarity gives the same conditions as renormalizability. We verify that $S$-matrix unitarity holds in the matter-graviton scattering at tree level in the $R_{\mu \nu} ^2$ gravity, demonstrating our new conjecture.

Physical constraints derived from FCNC in the 3-3-1-1 model

We investigate several phenomena related to FCNCs in the $\text{3-3-1-1}$ model. The sources of FCNCs at the tree-level from both the gauge and Higgs sectors are clarified. Experiments on the oscillation of mesons most stringently constrain the tree-level FCNCs. The lower bound on the new physics scale is imposed more tightly than in the previous, $\text{M}_{\text{new}}>12 $ \text{TeV}. Under this bound, the tree-level FCNCs make a negligible contribution to the $\text{Br}(B_s \rightarrow \mu^+ \mu^-)$, $\text{Br}(B \rightarrow K^{*} \mu^+ \mu^-)$ and $\text{Br}(B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{+}\mu^{-})$. The branching ratio of radiative decay $b \rightarrow s \gamma$ is enhanced by the ratio $\frac{v}{u}$ via diagrams with the charged Higgs mediation. In contrast, the charged currents of new gauge bosons significantly contribute to the decay process $\mu \rightarrow e \gamma$.

Searching for Axino-Like Particle at Fixed Target Experiments

We investigate the detectability of axino-like particle, which is defined as a supersymmetric partner of axion-like particle and can be a good candidate for dark matter in our Universe. Especially, we consider the fixed target experiments to search for the light axino-like particle with a neutralino as the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle. We calculate the production and decay rate of neutralinos and the consequent number of events (such as photons and charged leptons) that are produced when the neutralinos decay to the axino-like particles.

S-matrix Unitarity and Renormalizability in Higher Derivative Theories

We investigate the relation between the $S$-matrix unitarity ($SS^{\dagger}=1$) and the renormalizability, in theories with negative norm states. The relation has been confirmed in many theories, such as gauge theories, Einstein gravity and Lifshitz-type non-relativistic theories by analyzing the unitarity bound, which follows from the $S$-matrix unitarity and the norm positivity. On the other hand, renormalizable theories with a higher derivative kinetic term do not necessarily satisfy the unitarity bound essentially because the unitarity bound does not hold due to the negative norm states. In these theories, it is not clear if the $S$-matrix unitarity provides a nontrivial constraint related to the renormalizability. In this paper we introduce scalar field models with a higher derivative kinetic term and analyze the $S$-matrix unitarity. We have positive results of the relation.

Matter scattering in $R_{\mu \nu}^2$ gravity and unitarity

We investigate the ultraviolet (UV) behavior of two-scalar elastic scattering with graviton exchanges in higher curvature gravity theory. In the Einstein gravity, matter scattering is shown not to satisfy tree unitarity at high energy. Among a few possible directions to cure unitarity (i.e. UV completion of Einstein gravity), string theory, modified gravity, inclusion of high-mass/high-spin states, we take $R_{\mu\nu}^2$ gravity coupled to matter. We show that the matter scattering with graviton interactions satisfies the unitarity bound at high energy, in contrast with the Einstein gravity. The difference in unitarity property of the two gravity theories is due to that in the UV behavior of the propagator and is probably connected to that in another UV property, namely renormalizability property of the two.

Quantum gravity corrections to the standard model Higgs in Einstein and $R^2$ gravity

We evaluate quantum gravity corrections to the standard model Higgs potential $V(\phi)$ a la Coleman-Weinberg and examine the stability question of $V(\phi)$ at scales of Planck mass $M_{\rm Pl}$. We compute the gravity one-loop corrections by using the momentum cut-off in Einstein gravity. The gravity corrections affect the potential in a significant manner for the value of $\Lambda= (1 - 3)M_{\rm Pl}.$ In view of reducing the UV cut-off dependence we also make a similar study in the $R^2$ gravity.

Gravity loop corrections to the standard model Higgs in Einstein gravity

We study one-loop quantum gravity corrections to the standard model Higgs potential $V(\phi)$ $\grave{\rm a}$ la Coleman-Weinberg and examine the stability question of $V(\phi)$ in the energy region of Planck mass scale, $\mu\simeq M_{\rm Pl}$ ($M_{\rm Pl}=1.22\times10^{19}{\rm GeV}$). We calculate the gravity one-loop corrections to $V(\phi)$ in Einstein gravity by using the momentum cut-off $\Lambda$. We have found that even small gravity corrections compete with the standard model term of $V(\phi)$ and affect the stability argument of the latter part alone. This is because the latter part is nearly zero in the energy region of $M_{\rm Pl}$.

Tree-Unitarity and renormalizability in Lifshitz-scaling theory -- as a toy model of Ho\v{r}ava's gravity theory

We study tree-unitarity and renormalizability in Lifshitz-scaling theory, which is characterized by an anisotropic scaling between the spacial and time directions. Due to the lack of the Lorentz symmetry, the conditions for both unitarity and renormalizability are modified from those in relativistic theories. For renormalizability, the conventional discussion of the power counting conditions has to be extended. Because of the dependence of $S$-matrix elements on the reference frame, unitarity requires stronger conditions than those in relativistic cases. We show that the conditions for unitarity and renormalizabilty are identical as in relativistic theories. We discuss the importance of symmetries for a theory to be renormalizable.

Tree-Level Unitarity and Renormalizability in Lifshitz Scalar Theory

We study unitarity and renormalizability in the Lifshitz scalar field theory, which is characterized by an anisotropic scaling between the space and time directions. Without the Lorentz symmetry, both the unitarity and the renormalizability conditions are modified from those in relativistic theories. We show that for renormalizability, an extended version of the power counting condition is required in addition to the conventional one. The unitarity bound for S-matrix elements also gives stronger constraints on interaction terms because of the reference frame dependence of scattering amplitudes. We prove that both unitarity and renormalizability require identical conditions as in the case of conventional relativistic theories.

Geometry of Area Without Length

To define a free string by the Nambu-Goto action, all we need is the notion of area, and mathematically the area can be defined directly in the absence of a metric. Motivated by the possibility that string theory admits backgrounds where the notion of length is not well defined but a definition of area is given, we study space-time geometries based on the generalization of metric to area metric. In analogy with Riemannian geometry, we define the analogues of connections, curvatures and Einstein tensor. We propose a formulation generalizing Einstein's theory that will be useful if at a certain stage or a certain scale the metric is ill-defined and the space-time is better characterized by the notion of area. Static spherical solutions are found for the generalized Einstein equation in vacuum, including the Schwarzschild solution as a special case.

Inflation from radion gauge-Higgs potential at Planck scale

We study whether the inflation is realized based on the radion gauge-Higgs potential obtained from the one-loop calculation in the 5-dimensional gravity coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge theory. We show that the gauge-Higgs can give rise to inflation in accord with the astrophysical data and the radion plays a role in fixing the values of physical parameters. We clarify the reason why the radion dominated inflation and the hybrid inflation cannot occur in our framework.

Power-counting and Renormalizability in Lifshitz Scalar Theory

We study the renormalizability in theories of a self-interacting Lifshitz scalar field. We show that although the statement of power-counting is true at one-loop order, in generic cases where the scalar field is dimensionless, an infinite number of counter terms are involved in the renormalization procedure. This problem can be avoided by imposing symmetries, the shift symmetry in the present paper, which allow only a finite number of counter terms to appear. The symmetry requirements might have important implications for the construction of matter field sectors in the Horava-Lifshitz gravity.

Is cosmological constant screened in Liouville gravity with matter?

There has been a proposal that infrared quantum effects of massless interacting field theories in de-Sitter space may provide time-dependent screening of the cosmological constant. As a concrete model of the proposal, we study the three loop corrections to the energy-momentum tensor of massless $\lambda \phi^4$ theory in the background of classical Liouville gravity in $D=2$ dimensional de-Sitter space. We find that the cosmological constant is screened in sharp contrast to the massless $\lambda \phi^4$ theory in $D=4$ dimensions due to the sign difference between the cosmological constant of the Liouville gravity and that of the Einstein gravity. To argue for the robustness of our prediction, we introduce the concept of time-dependent infrared counter-terms and examine if they recover the de-Sitter invariance in the $\lambda \phi^4$ theory in comparison with the Sine-Gordon model where it was possible.

Radion stabilization in the presence of Wilson line phase

We study the stabilization of an extra-dimensional radius in the presence of a Wilson line phase of an extra $U(1)$ gauge symmetry on a five-dimensional space-time, using the effective potential relating both the radion and the Wilson line phase at the one-loop level. We find that the radion can be stabilized by the introduction of a small number of fermions.

Radion Inflation in Higher-Dimensional Gravity Theory

We study a radion model for inflation and density perturbation identifying the scalar field arising from the five-dimensional gravity on $M_4 x S^1$ with the inflaton. The inflaton potential arising from 5D graviton and matter one-loop effects is shown to possess the desirable slow-roll property. This radion model contains only a small number of parameters and there is an ample parameter region which reproduces (without fine-tuning) all precision astrophysical data.
