Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $\Xi^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $\Xi^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_\Lambda$Be + $^5_\Lambda$He. For the binding energy of the $\Xi^{-}$ hyperon in the $\Xi^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $\Xi^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak ${\Xi}N$-$\Lambda\Lambda$ coupling.

Observation of a Be double-Lambda hypernucleus in the J-PARC E07 experiment

A double-$\Lambda$ hypernucleus, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}\mathrm{Be}$, was observed by the J-PARC E07 collaboration in nuclear emulsions tagged by the $(K^{-},K^{+})$ reaction. This event was interpreted as a production and decay of $ {}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;10}\mathrm{Be}$, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$, or ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;12}\mathrm{Be}^{*}$ via $\Xi^{-}$ capture in ${}^{16}\mathrm{O}$. By assuming the capture in the atomic 3D state, the binding energy of two $\Lambda$ hyperons$\,$($B_{\Lambda\Lambda}$) of these double-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei are obtained to be $15.05 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, $19.07 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, and $13.68 \pm 0.11\,\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. Based on the kinematic fitting, ${}_{\Lambda\Lambda}^{\;11}\mathrm{Be}$ is the most likely explanation for the observed event.

The Infrared Astronomical Mission AKARI

AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. These will become an additional future heritage of this mission.

Meausurement of Sky Suface Brightness Fluctuations at lambda = 4 micron

We present a Monte-Carlo technique to probe the cosmic Infrared background radiation (CIB) with faint source confusion in deep, wide-field 4 micron images. We report a detection of surface brightness fluctuations using an ensemble of 5000 pixels. The brightness fluctuations do not show correlated structure and appear to be dominated by galaxies. We estimate a lower limit (95% C.L.) on CIB by modeling the number-count behavior of contributing sources to the detected fluctuations.

Spin and Orbital Angular Momentum Distribution Functions of the Nucleon

A theoretical prediction is given for the spin and orbital angular momentum distribution functions of the nucleon within the framework of an effective quark model of QCD, i.e. the chiral quark soliton model. An outstanding feature of the model is that it predicts fairly small quark spin fraction of the nucleon $ΔΣ\simeq 0.35$, which in turn dictates that the remaining 65% of the nucleon spin is carried by the orbital angular momentum of quarks and antiquarks at the model energy scale of $Q^2 \simeq 0.3 {GeV}^2$. This large orbital angular momentum necessarily affects the scenario of scale dependence of the nucleon spin contents in a drastic way.

The electroproduction of the $Δ$(1232) in the chiral quark-soliton model

We calculate the ratios E2/M1 and C2/M1 for the electroproduction of the $Δ$(1232) in the region of photon virtuality $0<-q^2<1$ GeV$^2$. The magnetic dipole amplitude M1 is also presented. The theory used is the chiral quark-soliton model, which is based in the instanton vaccum of the QCD. The calculations are performed in flavor SU(2) and SU(3) taking rotational ($1/N_c$) corrections into account. The results for the ratios agree qualitatively with the available data, although the magnitude of both ratios seems to underestimate the latest experimental results.

A Search for Near-Infrared Emission From the Halo of NGC 5907 at Radii of 10 kpc to 30 kpc

We present a search for near-infrared (3.5-5 micron) emission from baryonic dark matter in the form of low-mass stars and/or brown dwarfs in the halo of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907. The observations were made using a 256 by 256 InSb array with a pixel scale of 17" at the focus of a liquid-helium-cooled telescope carried above the Earth's atmosphere by a sounding rocket. In contrast to previous experiments which have detected a halo around NGC 5907 in the V, R, I, J and K bands at galactic radii 6kpc < r < 10kpc, our search finds no evidence for emission from a halo at 10kpc < r < 30kpc. Assuming a halo mass density scaling as r^(-2), which is consistent with the flat rotation curves that are observed out to radii of 32kpc, the lower limit of the mass-to-light ratio at 3.5-5 microns for the halo of NGC 5907 is 250 (2 sigma) in solar units. This is comparable to the lower limit we have found previously for NGC 4565 (Uemizu et al. 1998). Based on recent models, our non-detection implies that hydrogen- burning stars contribute < 15% of the mass of the dark halo of NGC 5907. Our results are consistent with the previous detection of extended emission at r < 10kpc if the latter is caused by a stellar population that has been ejected from the disk because of tidal interactions. We conclude that the dark halo of NGC 5907, which is evident from rotation curves that extend far beyond 10kpc, is not comprised of hydrogen burning stars.

Do we expect light flavor sea-quark asymmetry also for the spin-dependent distribution functions of the nucleon?

After taking account of the scale dependence by means of the standard DGLAP evolution equation, the theoretical predictions of the chiral quark soliton model for the unpolarized and longitudinally polarized structure functions of the nucleon are compared with the recent high energy data. The theory is shown to explain all the qualitative features of the experiments, including the NMC data for $F_2^p (x) - F_2^n (x)$, $F_2^n (x) / F_2^p (x)$, the Hermes and NuSea data for $\bar{d}(x) - \bar{u}(x)$, the EMC and SMC data for $g_1^p(x)$, $g_1^n(x)$ and $g_1^d(x)$. Among others, flavor asymmetry of the longitudinally polarized sea-quark distributions is a remarkable prediction of this model, i.e., it predicts that $Δ\bar{d}(x) - Δ\bar{u}(x) = C x^α [ \bar{d}(x) - \bar{u}(x)]$ with a sizable negative coefficient $C \simeq -2.0$ (and $α\simeq 0.12$) in qualitative consistency with the recent semi-phenomenological analysis by Morii and Yamanishi.

On the Chiral Quark Soliton Model with Pauli-Villars Regularization

The Pauli-Villars regularization scheme is often used for evaluating parton distributions within the framework of the chiral quark soliton model with inclusion of the vacuum polarization effects. Its simplest version with a single subtraction term should however be taken with some caution, since it does not fully get rid of divergences contained in scalar and psuedoscalar quark densities appearing in the soliton equation of motion. To remedy this shortcoming, we propose here its natural extention, i.e. the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme with multi-subtraction terms. We also carry out a comparative analysis of the Pauli-Villars regularization scheme and more popular proper-time one. It turns out that some isovector observables like the isovector magnetic moment of the nucleon is rather sensitive to the choice of the regularization scheme. In the process of tracing the origin of this sensitivity, a noticeable difference of the two regularization scheme is revealed.

Flavor asymmetry of polarized and unpolarized sea quark distributions in the large-N_c limit

We summarize recent attempts to calculate the flavor asymmetry of the nucleon's sea quark distributions in the large-$N_c$ limit, where the nucleon can be described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory. We discuss the leading-twist longitudinally polarized and transversity antiquark distributions, $Δ\bar u (x) - Δ\bar d (x)$ and $δ\bar u (x) - δ\bar d (x)$, as well as the unpolarized one, $\bar u (x) - \bar d (x)$, which appears only in the next-to-leading order of the $1/N_c$-expansion. Results for $\bar u (x) - \bar d (x)$ are in good agreement with the recent Drell-Yan data from the FNAL E866 experiment. The longitudinally polarized antiquark asymmetry, $Δ\bar u (x) - Δ\bar d (x)$, is found to be larger than the unpolarized one.

Symmetry conserving approach to the quantization of the non-topological SU(3) soliton

We reconsider canonical quantization of the rotating soliton in the SU(3) Chiral Quark-Soliton Model. We show that at the level of 1/N_c, in contrast to the SU(2) version of the model, there appear terms which spoil the commutation rules of the flavor generators. Terms of similar origin are also present in the expressions for axial couplings and magnetic moments. We investigate the small soliton limit of the model, and require that the results for the physical observables reduce to the ones of the non-relativistic quark model. This procedure allows to identify the troublesome terms. Next, we introduce a symmetry conserving approach by subtracting these terms and discuss numerical predictions obtained that way.

Isovector unpolarized quark distribution in the nucleon in the large-N_c limit

We calculate the isovector (flavor-nonsinglet) unpolarized quark- and antiquark distributions in the nucleon at a low normalization point in the large-N_c limit. The nucleon is described as a soliton of the effective chiral theory. The isovector distribution appears in the next-to-leading order of the 1/N_c-expansion. Numerical results for the quark- and antiquark distributions compare well with the parametrizations of the data at a low normalization point. This large-N_c approach gives a flavor asymmetry of the antiquark distribution (violation of the Gottfried sum rule) in good agreement with the measurements.

Baryons as non-topological chiral solitons

The present review gives a survey of recent developments and applications of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with $N_f=2$ and $N_f=3$ quark flavors for the structure of baryons. The model is an effective chiral quark theory which incorporates the SU(N$_f$)$_L\otimes$SU(N$_f$)$_R\otimes$U(1)$_V$ approximate symmetry of Quantum chromodynamics. The approach describes the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and dynamical quark mass generation. Mesons appear as quark-antiquark excitations and baryons arise as non-topological solitons with three valence quarks and a polarized Dirac sea. For the evaluation of the baryon properties the present review concentrates on the non-linear Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with quark and Goldstone degrees of freedom which is identical to the Chiral quark soliton model obtained from the instanton liquid model of the QCD vacuum. In this non-linear model, a wide variety of observables of baryons of the octet and decuplet is considered. These include, in particular, electromagnetic, axial, pseudoscalar and pion nucleon form factors and the related static properties like magnetic moments, radii and coupling constants of the nucleon as well as the mass splittings and electromagnetic form factors of hyperons. Predictions are given for the strange form factors, the scalar form factor and the tensor charge of the nucleon.

Axial form factor in the chiral quark soliton model

We calculate the axial form factor in the chiral quark soliton (semibosonized Nambu - Jona-Lasinio) model using the semiclassical quantization scheme in the next to leading order in angular velocity. The obtained axial form factor is in a good absolute (without additional scaling) agreement with the experimental data. Both the value at the origin and the $q$-dependence of the form factor as well as the axial m.s.radius are fairly well reproduced.

$E2/M1$ Ratio for the $\gamma N\rightarrow \Delta$ Transition in the Chiral Quark Soliton Model

We calculate the electric quadrupole to magnetic dipole transition ratio $E2/M1$ for the reaction $\gamma N \ra \Delta(1232)$ in the chiral quark soliton model. The calculated $E2/M1$ ratio is in a good agreement with the very new experimental data. We obtain non-zero negative value for the electric quadrupole $N-\Delta$ transition moment, which suggests an oblate deformed charge structure of the nucleon or/and the delta isobar. Other observables related to this quantity, namely the $N-\Delta$ mass splitting, the isovector charge radius, and isovector magnetic moment, are properly reproduced as well.

$1/N_c$ Rotational Corrections to $g_A$ and Isovector Magnetic Moment of the Nucleon

The $1/N_c$ rotational corrections to the axial vector constant and the isovector magnetic moment of the nucleon are studied in the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model. We follow a semiclassical quantization procedure in terms of path integrals in which we can include perturbatively corrections in powers of angular velocity $Ω\sim \frac 1{N_c}$. We find non-zero $1/N_c$ order corrections from both the valence and the Dirac sea quarks. These corrections are large enough to resolve the long-standing problem of a strong underestimation of both $g_A$ and $μ^{IV}$ in the leading order. The axial constant $g_A$ is well reproduced, whereas the isovector magnetic moment $μ^{IV}$ is still underestimated by 25 \%.
