Diffractive open charm production at HERA

We use perturbative QCD to calculate the cross sections $σ^{L,T}$ for the diffractive production of open charm $(c\overline{c})$ from longitudinally and transversely polarised photons (of virtuality $Q^2$) incident at high energy $(\sqrt{s})$ on a proton target. We study both the $Q^2$ and $M^2$ dependence of the cross sections, where $M$ is the invariant mass of the $c\overline{c}$ pair. Surprisingly, the result for $σ^T$, as well as for $σ^L$, is perturbatively stable. We estimate higher-order corrections and find a sizeable enhancement of the cross sections. The cross sections depend on the {\it square} of the gluon density $g (x, K^2)$, and we show that the observation of open charm at the HERA electron-proton collider can act as a sensitive probe of the gluon distribution for $x = (Q^2 + M^2)/s$ and scale $K^2 = (m_c^2 + \langle k_T^2 \rangle) (1 + Q^2/M^2)$ where the average quark transverse momentum squared $\langle k_T^2 \rangle \sim m_c^2$. As compared to diffractive $J/ψ$ production, open charm has the advantage that it is independent of the non-perturbative ambiguities arising from the $J/ψ$ wave function. We estimate the fraction of diffractive events that arise from $c\overline{c}$ production.

Top Quark Production to ${\cal{O}}(α_s^2)$

The cross-section for the production of $t\bar{t}$ pairs in $e^+e^-$-annihilation via a virtual photon is determined up to order $α_s^2$. For the cm-energies of interest the effect of the top mass may not be considered as a small parameter and the full mass dependence must be included.

Double Bubble Corrections to Heavy Quark Production

Second order ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$ corrections to the heavy quark production cross-section due to massless quarks and coloured scalars are calculated for all energies above threshold. Based on the method introduced in this letter also the gauge non-invariant second order corrections due to the pure gluonic selfenergy insertion and a certain class of ${\cal{O}}(α_s^3)$ and ${\cal{O}}(α_s^4)$ corrections are determined. For the special choice of the gauge parameter, $ξ=4$, the leading threshold and high energy behaviour of the pure second order gluonic corrections to the cross-section are governed by the gluonic self energy insertion.

Radiation of Light Fermions in Heavy Fermion Production

Recent analytic calculations on the rate for the production of a pair of massive fermions in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation plus real or virtual radiation of a pair of massless fermions are discussed. The contributions for real and virtual radiation are displayed separately. The asymptotic behaviour close to threshold is given in a compact form and an application to the angular distribution of massive quarks close to threshold is presented.

Angular Distributions of Massive Quarks and Leptons Close to Threshold

Predictions for the angular distribution of massive quarks and leptons are presented, including QCD and QED corrections. Recent results for the fermionic part of the two-loop corrections to the electromagnetic form factors are combined with the BLM scale fixing prescription. Two distinctly different scales arise as arguments of $α_s(μ^2)$ near threshold: the relative momentum of the quarks governing the soft gluon exchange responsible for the Coulomb potential, and a large momentum scale approximately equal to twice the quark mass for the corrections induced by transverse gluons. Numerical predictions for charmed, bottom, and top quarks are given. One obtains a direct determination of $α_V(Q^2)$, the coupling in the heavy quark potential, which can be compared with lattice gauge theory predictions. The corresponding QED results for $τ$ pair production allow for a measurement of the magnetic moment of the $τ$ and could be tested at a future $τ$-charm factory.

Hadron Radiation in Tau Production and the Leptonic Z Boson Decay Rate

Secondary radiation of hadrons from a tau pair produced in electron positron collisions may constitute an important obstacle for precision measurements of the production cross section and of branching ratios. The rate for real and virtual radiation is calculated and various distributions are presented. For Z decays a comprehensive analysis is performed which incorporates real and virtual radiation of leptons. The corresponding results are also given for primary electron and muon pairs. Compact analytical formulae are presented for entirely leptonic configurations. Measurements of $Z$ partial decay rates which eliminate all hadron and lepton radiation are about 0.3\% to 0.4\% lower than totally inclusive measurements, a consequence of the ${\cal O}(α^2)$ negative virtual corrections which are enhanced by the third power of a large logarithm.

Radiation of Light Fermions in Heavy Fermion Production

The rate for the production of a pair of massive fermions in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation plus real or virtual radiation of a pair of massless fermions is calculated analytically. The contributions for real and virtual radiation are displayed separately. The asymptotic behaviour close to threshold and for high energies is given in a compact form. These approximations provide arguments for the appropriate choice of the scale in the ${\cal O}(α)$ result, such that no large logarithms remain in the final answer.

Polarization in Top Quark Pair Production near Threshold

The polarization dependent momentum distributions of top quarks and their decay products are calculated for $t\bar t$ production at future $e^+e^-$ colliders with polarized beams. The Green function formalism is applied to this reaction near energy threshold. The Lippmann--Schwinger equations for the $S$-wave and $P$-wave Green functions are solved numerically for the QCD chromostatic potential given by the two-loop formula at large momentum transfers and Richardson ansatz at intermediate and small ones. It is demonstrated that for the longitudinally polarized electron beam an optimally polarized sample of top quarks can be produced.

Polarization in Top Quark Production and Decay near Threshold

Theoretical results are presented for top quarks produced in annihilation of polarized electrons on positrons. Polarization studies for $t\bar t$ pairs near threshold are free from hadronization ambiguities. This is due to the short lifetime of the top quark. Semileptonic decays are discussed as well as their applications in studying polarization dependent processes involving top quarks. The Green function formalism is applied to $t\bar t$ production at future $e^+e^-$ colliders with polarized beams. Lippmann--Schwinger equation is solved numerically for the QCD chromostatic potential given by the two-loop formula at large momentum transfers and Richardson ansatz at intermediate and small ones. The polarization dependent momentum distributions of top quarks and their decay products are calculated.

Radiation of Heavy Quarks

The rate for the production of massive fermions radiated off a pair of massless fermions is calculated analytically. Combined with the analytic calculation of the corresponding virtual contribution one obtains the order $α^2$ correction to the cross section which is induced by the real and virtual radiation of a pair of massive fermions by massless fermions. Approximations valid for large and for small masses are derived and shown to agree with earlier calculations.

Hadron Radiation in Leptonic $Z$ Decays

The rate for the final state radiation of hadrons in leptonic $Z$ decays is evaluated, using as input experimental data for $σ(e^+e^-\to hadrons)$ in the low energy region. Configurations with a lepton pair of large and a hadronic state of low invariant mass are dominant. A relative rate $Γ_{l\bar l had}/Γ_{l\bar l}=6.3\times 10^{-4}$ is calculated. This result is about twice the prediction based on a parton model calculation with a quark mass of $300$ MeV. The rate for secondary production of heavy quarks is calculated in the same formalism.

Comment on the Average Momentum of Top Quarks in the Threshold Region

The behavior of the momentum distribution of top quarks in the threshold region is investigated. The qualitative behavior, in particular the dependence of the average momentum on the strong coupling constant can be understood from analytical calculations for the Coulomb potential. Ambiguities in the relation between the excitation curve and the top mass are addressed.

Momentum Distributions in $t\bar t$

We apply the Green function formalism for $t-\bar t$ production and decay near threshold in a study of the effects due to the momentum dependent width for such a system. We point out that these effects are likely to be much smaller than expected from the reduction of the available phase space. The Lippmann--Schwinger equation for the QCD chromostatic potential is solved numerically for $S$ partial wave. We compare the results on the total cross section, top quark intrinsic momentum distributions and on the energy spectra of $W$ bosons from top quark decays with those obtained for the constant width.
