Global analysis of data on the spin-orbit coupled $A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+}$ and $b^{3}Π_{u}$ states of Cs2

We present experimentally derived potential curves and spin-orbit interaction functions for the strongly perturbed $A^{1}Σ_{u}^{+}$ and $b^{3}Π_{u}$ states of the cesium dimer. The results are based on data from several sources. Laser-induced fluorescence Fourier transform spectroscopy (LIF FTS) was used some time ago in the Laboratoire Aimé Cotton primarily to study the $X ^{1}Σ_{g}^{+}$ state. More recent work at Tsinghua University provides information from moderate resolution spectroscopy on the lowest levels of the $b^{3}Π_{0u}^{\pm}$ states as well as additional high resolution data. From Innsbruck University, we have precision data obtained with cold Cs$_{2}$ molecules. Recent data from Temple University was obtained using the optical-optical double resonance polarization spectroscopy technique, and finally, a group at the University of Latvia has added additional LIF FTS data. In the Hamiltonian matrix, we have used analytic potentials (the Expanded Morse Oscillator form) with both finite-difference (FD) coupled-channels and discrete variable representation (DVR) calculations of the term values. Fitted diagonal and off-diagonal spin-orbit functions are obtained and compared with {\it ab initio} results from Temple and Moscow State universities.

The single-atom box: bosonic staircase and effects of parity

We have developed a theory of a Josephson junction formed by two tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well potential in the regime of strong atom-atom interaction for an arbitrary total number $N$ of bosons in the condensates. The tunnel resonances in the junction are shown to be periodically spaced by the interaction energy, forming a single-atom staircase sensitive to the parity of $N$ even for large $N$. One of the manifestations of the staircase structure is the periodic modulation with the bias energy of the visibility of the interference pattern in lattices of junctions.

Enhanced sensitivity to variation of $m_{e}/m_{p}$ in molecular spectra

We propose new experiments with high sensitivity to a possible spatial or temporal variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio $μ\equiv m_e/m_p$. We consider a nearly-degenerate pair of molecular vibrational levels, where each state is associated with a different electronic potential. The change in the splitting between such levels, with respect to a change in $μ$, can be large both on an absolute scale and relative to the splitting. We demonstrate the existence of such pairs of levels in Cs$_2$. The narrow spectral lines achievable with ultracold Cs$_2$ in these long-lived levels make this system promising for future searches for small variations in $μ$.

The Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for Bose Particles in a Double Well Potential: Two Mode Models and Beyond

There have been many discussions of two-mode models for Bose condensates in a double well potential, but few cases in which parameters for these models have been calculated for realistic situations. Recent experiments lead us to use the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to obtain optimum two-mode parameters. We find that by using the lowest symmetric and antisymmetric wavefunctions, it is possible to derive equations for a more exact two-mode model that provides for a variable tunneling rate depending on the instantaneous values of the number of atoms and phase differences. Especially for larger values of the nonlinear interaction term and larger barrier heights, results from this model produce better agreement with numerical solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in 1D and 3D, as compared with previous models with constant tunneling, and better agreement with experimental results for the tunneling oscillation frequency [Albiez et al., cond-mat/0411757]. We also show how this approach can be used to obtain modified equations for a second quantized version of the Bose double well problem.

Optical Production of Ultracold Polar Molecules

We demonstrate the production of ultracold polar RbCs molecules in their vibronic ground state, via photoassociation of laser-cooled atoms followed by a laser-stimulated state transfer process. The resulting sample of $X ^1Σ^+ (v=0)$ molecules has a translational temperature of $\sim100 μ$K and a narrow distribution of rotational states. With the method described here it should be possible to produce samples even colder in all degrees of freedom, as well as other bi-alkali species.

Scattering in tight atom waveguides

Using the Theory of Scattering in Restricted Geometries developed by A. Lupu-Sax as a starting point, we present a comprehensive multi-channel theory of atom-atom scattering in tight atom waveguides.

Atom-Atom Scattering Under Cylindrical Harmonic Confinement: Numerical and Analytical Studies of the Confinement Induced Resonance

In a recent article [M. Olshanii, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 81}, 938 (1998)], an analytic solution of atom-atom scattering with a delta-function pseudopotential interaction in the presence of transverse harmonic confinement yielded an effective coupling constant that diverged at a `confinement induced resonance.' In the present work, we report numerical results that corroborate this resonance for more realistic model potentials. In addition, we extend the previous theoretical discussion to include two-atom bound states in the presence of transverse confinement, for which we also report numerical results here

Bose condensates in a harmonic trap near the critical temperature

The mean-field properties of finite-temperature Bose-Einstein gases confined in spherically symmetric harmonic traps are surveyed numerically. The solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations for the condensate and low-lying quasiparticle excitations are calculated self-consistently using the discrete variable representation, while the most high-lying states are obtained with a local density approximation. Consistency of the theory for temperatures through the Bose condensation point requires that the thermodynamic chemical potential differ from the eigenvalue of the GP equation; the appropriate modifications lead to results that are continuous as a function of the particle interactions. The HFB equations are made gapless either by invoking the Popov approximation or by renormalizing the particle interactions. The latter approach effectively reduces the strength of the effective scattering length, increases the number of condensate atoms at each temperature, and raises the value of the transition temperature relative to the Popov approximation. The renormalization effect increases approximately with the log of the atom number, and is most pronounced at temperatures near the transition. Comparisons with the results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations and various local density approximations are presented, and experimental consequences are discussed.

Mean Field Calculations of Bose-Einstein Condensation of 7Li Atoms In a Harmonic Trap

A self-consistent mean-field theory for bosons for T>0 is used to reconcile predictions of collapse with recent observations of Bose-Einstein condensation of 7Li. Eigenfunctions of a (non-separable) Hamiltonian that includes the anisotropic external trap field and atom-atom interactions are obtained by an iteration process. A sum over the Bose distribution, and the ``alternating direction implicit'' algorithm are used. Near Tc, the ensemble exhibits a localized condensate composed of atoms in the few lowest states. For lower T, numerical instability indicates collapse to a more dense phase.
