STARS-Enabled Full-Duplex Two-Way mMIMO System Under Spatially-Correlated Channels

\underline{S}imultaneous \underline{t}ransmitting \underline{a}nd \underline{r}eflecting \underline{s}urface (STARS)-assisted systems have emerged to fill this gap by providing $ 360^{\circ}$ wireless coverage. In parallel, full-duplex (FD) communication offers a higher achievable rate through efficient spectrum utilization compared to the half-duplex (HD) counterpart. Moreover, two-way/bi-directional communications in an FD system can further enhance the system's spectral efficiency. Hence, in this paper, we propose a STARS-enabled massive MIMO deployment in an FD two-way communication network for highly efficient spectrum utilization, while covering the dead zones around the STARS. This model enables simultaneous information exchange between multiple nodes, while \emph{potentially} doubling the spectral efficiency (SE). By invoking the use-and-then-forget (UaTF) combining scheme, we derive a closed-form expression for an achievable SE at each user of the system considering both uplink and downlink communications based on statistical channel state information (CSI), while also accounting for imperfect CSI and correlated fading conditions. Moreover, we formulate an optimization problem to obtain an optimal passive beamforming matrix design at the STARS that maximizes the sum achievable SE. The considered problem is non-convex and we propose a provably-convergent low-complexity algorithm, termed as \underline{pro}jected \underline{gr}adient \underline{a}scent \underline{m}ethod (ProGrAM), to obtain a stationary solution. Extensive numerical results are provided to establish the performance superiority of the FD STARS-enabled system over the HD STARS-enabled and FD conventional RIS (cRIS)-enabled counterparts, and also to show the effect of different parameters of interest on the system performance.

Beyond Diagonal RIS: A New Frontier for 6G Internet of Things Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology has emerged as a promising enabler for next-generation wireless networks, offering a paradigm shift from passive environments to programmable radio wave propagation. Despite the potential of diagonal RIS (D-RIS), its limited wave manipulation capability restricts performance gains. In this paper, we investigate the burgeoning concept of beyond-diagonal RIS (BD-RIS), which incorporates non-diagonal elements in its scattering matrix to deliver more fine-grained control of electromagnetic wavefronts. We begin by discussing the limitations of traditional D-RIS and introduce key BD-RIS architectures with different operating modes. We then highlight the features that make BD-RIS particularly advantageous for 6G IoT applications, including advanced beamforming, enhanced interference mitigation, and flexible coverage. A case study on BD-RIS-assisted vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication in an underlay cellular network demonstrates considerable improvements in spectral efficiency when compared to D-RIS and conventional systems. Lastly, we present current challenges such as hardware design complexity, channel estimation, and non-ideal hardware effects, and propose future research directions involving AI-driven optimization, joint communication and sensing, and physical layer security. Our findings illustrate the transformative potential of BD-RIS in shaping high-performance, scalable, and reliable 6G IoT networks.

Performance of Double-Stacked Intelligent Metasurface-Assisted Multiuser Massive MIMO Communications in the Wave Domain

Although reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for shaping the propagation environment, it consists of a single-layer structure within inherent limitations regarding the number of beam steering patterns. Based on the recently revolutionary technology, denoted as stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM), we propose its implementation not only on the base station (BS) side in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup but also in the intermediate space between the base station and the users to adjust the environment further as needed. For the sake of convenience, we call the former BS SIM (BSIM), and the latter channel SIM (CSIM). Hence, we achieve wave-based combining at the BS and wave-based configuration at the intermediate space. Specifically, we propose a channel estimation method with reduced overhead, being crucial for SIMassisted communications. Next, we derive the uplink sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Notably, we optimize the phase shifts of both BSIM and CSIM simultaneously by using the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). Compared to previous works on SIMs, we study the uplink transmission, a mMIMO setup, channel estimation in a single phase, a second SIM at the intermediate space, and simultaneous optimization of the two SIMs. Simulation results show the impact of various parameters on the sum SE, and demonstrate the superiority of our optimization approach compared to the alternating optimization (AO) method.

Exploring Radial Symmetry on Phased Arrays Using Particle Swarm Optimization

Phased antenna arrays enable dynamic beam shaping, which is essential for Non-Geostationary (NGSO) satellite communications where efficient beam distribution is important. This study focuses on thinning phased antenna arrays with circular apertures made up of eight replicated sectors. Circular apertures reduce the number of active elements, lowering system costs and improving radiation performance by evenly distributing energy, which helps to reduce Side Lobe Levels (SLL). Particle Swarm Optimization was used to approach the thinning problem, addressing the challenge of selecting which elements should be activated. The resulting design achieves an SLL of (-25.67 dB), outperforming previous designs with SLL reductions of (-22.53 dB). Achieved results underscore the potential of circular aperture phased arrays to improve beam quality, minimize interference, and deliver cost-effective solutions for NGSO satellites.

LEO Satellite-Enabled Random Access with Large Differential Delay and Doppler Shift

This paper investigates joint device identification, channel estimation, and symbol detection for LEO satellite-enabled grant-free random access systems, specifically targeting scenarios where remote Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices operate without global navigation satellite system (GNSS) assistance. Considering the constrained power consumption of these devices, the large differential delay and Doppler shift are handled at the satellite receiver. We firstly propose a spreading-based multi-frame transmission scheme with orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation to mitigate the doubly dispersive effect in time and frequency, and then analyze the input-output relationship of the system. Next, we propose a receiver structure based on three modules: a linear module for identifying active devices that leverages the generalized approximate message passing algorithm to eliminate inter-user and inter-carrier interference; a non-linear module that employs the message passing algorithm to jointly estimate the channel and detect the transmitted symbols; and a third module that aims to exploit the three dimensional block channel sparsity in the delay-Doppler-angle domain. Soft information is exchanged among the three modules by careful message scheduling. Furthermore, the expectation-maximization algorithm is integrated to adjust phase rotation caused by the fractional Doppler and to learn the hyperparameters in the priors. Finally, the convolutional neural network is incorporated to enhance the symbol detection. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed transmission scheme boosts the system performance, and the designed algorithms outperform the conventional methods significantly in terms of the device identification, channel estimation, and symbol detection.

Fast Beam Placement for Ultra-Dense LEO Networks

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites has brought about significant improvements in wireless communications, characterized by low latency and reduced transmission loss compared to geostationary orbit (GSO) satellites. Ultra-dense LEO satellites can serve many users by generating active beams effective to their locations. The beam placement problem is challenging but important for efficiently allocating resources with a large number of users. This paper formulates and solves a fast beam placement optimization problem for ultra-dense satellite systems to enhance the link budget with a minimum number of active beams (NABs). To achieve this goal and balance load among beams within polynomial time, we propose two algorithms for large user groups exploiting the modified K-means clustering and the graph theory. Numerical results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposals in terms of the statistical channel gain-to-noise ratio and computation time over state-of-the-art benchmarks.

Empirical Risk-aware Machine Learning on Trojan-Horse Detection for Trusted Quantum Key Distribution Networks

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a cryptographic technique that leverages principles of quantum mechanics to offer extremely high levels of data security during transmission. It is well acknowledged for its capacity to accomplish provable security. However, the existence of a gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation has raised concerns about the trustworthiness of QKD networks. In order to mitigate this disparity, we propose the implementation of risk-aware machine learning techniques that present risk analysis for Trojan-horse attacks over the time-variant quantum channel. The trust condition presented in this study aims to evaluate the offline assessment of safety assurance by comparing the risk levels between the recommended safety borderline. This assessment is based on the risk analysis conducted. Furthermore, the proposed trustworthy QKD scenario demonstrates its numerical findings with the assistance of a state-of-the-art point-to-point QKD device, which operates over optical quantum channels spanning distances of 1m, 1km, and 30km. Based on the results from the experimental evaluation of a 30km optical connection, it can be concluded that the QKD device provided prior information to the proposed learner during the non-existence of Eve's attack. According to the optimal classifier, the defensive gate offered by our learner possesses the capability to identify any latent Eve attacks, hence effectively mitigating the risk of potential vulnerabilities. The Eve detection probability is provably bound for our trustworthy QKD scenario.

Active and Passive Beamforming Designs for SER Minimization in RIS-Assisted MIMO Systems

This research exploits the applications of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems, specifically addressing the enhancement of communication reliability with modulated signals. Specifically, we first derive the analytical downlink symbol error rate (SER) of each user as a multivariate function of both the phase-shift and beamforming vectors. The analytical SER enables us to obtain insights into the synergistic dynamics between the RIS and MIMO communication. We then introduce a novel average SER minimization problem subject to the practical constraints of the transmitted power budget and phase shift coefficients, which is NP-hard. By incorporating the differential evolution (DE) algorithm as a pivotal tool for optimizing the intricate active and passive beamforming variables in RIS-assisted communication systems, the non-convexity of the considered SER optimization problem can be effectively handled. Furthermore, an efficient local search is incorporated into the DE algorithm to overcome the local optimum, and hence offer low SER and high communication reliability. Monte Carlo simulations validate the analytical results and the proposed optimization framework, indicating that the joint active and passive beamforming design is superior to the other benchmarks.
