Repellent properties of perfect powers on partition functions: a heuristic approach

In 2013, Sun conjectured that the partition function $p(n)$ is never a perfect power for $n \geq 2$. Building on this, Merca, Ono, and Tsai recently observed that for any fixed integers $d \geq 0$ and $k \geq 2$, there appear to be only finitely many integers $n$ such that $p(n)$ differs from a perfect $k$th power by at most $d$. Denoting by $M_k(d)$ the largest such $n$, they conjectured that $M_k(d) = o(d^\epsilon)$ for every $\epsilon > 0$. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic growth of analogs of $M_k(d)$ for a wide class of partition functions. We establish sharp lower bounds and provide heuristics which suggest that $M_k(d)$ in fact grows polylogarithmically in $d$, i.e. of order $\log^2(d)$. More generally, we prove that if $f(n)$ is a suitably random chosen function with asymptotic growth rate similar to that of $p(n)$, then the set of integers $n$ for which $f(n)$ is a perfect power is finite with probability 1.

Exceptional Congruences for Eta-quotient newforms

In 1973, Swinnerton-Dyer completely classified all congruences for coefficients of normalized eigenforms in weights $k \in \{12, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26\}$ on $\Gamma_{0}(1) = \operatorname{SL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z})$ using the theory of modular Galois representations. In this paper, we classify congruences of Type I and Type II considered by Swinnerton-Dyer for the coefficients of eta-quotient newforms in $S_{k}(N, \chi)$. When $k \geq 2$, we prove them using the theory of modular forms modulo primes. We also prove extensions of these congruences modulo prime powers.

Explicit images for the Shimura Correspondence

In 2014, Yang showed that for $F \in \mathcal{A}_{r, s, 1, 1_N}$, we have $\textup{Sh}_{r}(F \mid V_{24}) = G \otimes \chi_{12}$ where $G\in S^{new}_{r+2s - 1}(\Gamma_{0}(6), - \left( \frac{8}{r} \right), - \left( \frac{12}{r} \right))$, where $\textup{Sh}_{r}$ is the $r$-th Shimura lift associated to the theta-multiplier. He proved a similar result for $(r,6) = 3$.\:His proofs rely on trace computations in integral and half-integral weights. In this paper, we provide a constructive proof of Yang's result. We obtain explicit formulas for $\mathcal{S}_{r}(F)$, the $r$-th Shimura lift associated to the eta-multiplier defined by Ahlgren, Andersen, and Dicks, when $1\leq r\leq 23$ is odd and $N = 1$. We also obtain formulas for lifts of Hecke eigenforms multiplied by theta-function eta-quotients and lifts of Rankin-Cohen brackets of Hecke eigenforms with theta-function eta-quotients.

Indices of nilpotency in certain spaces of modular forms

We study the index of nilpotency relative to certain Hecke operators in spaces of modular forms with integer weight and level $N$ with integer coefficients modulo primes $p$ for $(p, N) \in \{(3, 1), (5, 1), (7, 1), (3, 4)\}$. In these settings, we prove upper bounds on certain indices of nilpotency. As an application of our bounds, we prove infinite families of congruences for $p^t$-core partition functions modulo $p$ for $p\in \{3, 5, 7\}$ and $t\geq 1$, and we prove an infinite family of congruences modulo $3$ for the $r$th power partition function, $p_r(n)$, when $r = 12k$ with $\gcd(k,6) = 1$. We also include conjectures on a function which quantifies degree lowering on powers of the Delta function by the relevant Hecke operators in these settings, and on the index of nilpotency relative to a modification of this degree-lowering function.

Congruence properties modulo prime powers for a class of partition functions

Let $p$ be prime, and let $p_{[1,p]}(n)$ denote the function whose generating function is $\prod (1-q^n)^{-1}(1 - q^{pn})^{-1}$. This function and its generalizations $p_{[c^{\ell}, d^m]}(n)$ are the subject of study in several recent papers. Let $\ell\geq 5$, let $j\geq 1$, and let $p \in \{2, 3, 5\}$. In this paper, we prove that the generating function for $p_{[1, p]}(n)$ in the progression $\beta_{p, \ell, j}$ modulo $\ell^j$ with $24\beta_{p, \ell, j} \equiv p + 1 \pmod{\ell^j}$ lies in a Hecke-invariant subspace of type $\{\eta(Dz)\eta(Dpz)F(Dz) : F(z) \in M_{s}(\Gamma_0(p), \chi)\}$ for suitable $D\geq 1$, $s\geq 0$, and character~$\chi$. When $p\in \{2, 3, 5\}$, we use the Hecke-invariance of these subspaces proved in [21] to prove, for distinct primes $\ell$ and $m\geq 5$ and $j\geq 1$, congruences of the form \[ p_{[1, p]}\left(\frac{\ell^jm^k n + 1}{D}\right)\equiv 0 \pmod{\ell^j} \] for all $n\geq 1$ with $m\nmid n$, where $k$ is explicitly computable and depends on the forms in the invariant subspace. Our proofs require adapting and extending analogous level one results on $p(n)$ in [1] and [22] to level $p$.

A resource theory of activity for quantum thermodynamics in the absence of heat baths

Active states, from which work can be extracted by time-dependent perturbations, are an important resource for quantum thermodynamics in the absence of heat baths. Here we characterize this resource, establishing a resource theory that captures the operational scenario where an experimenter manipulates a quantum system by means of energy-preserving operations and resets to non-active states. Our resource theory comes with simple conditions for state convertibility and an experimentally accessible resource quantifier that determines the maximum advantage of active states in the task of producing approximations of the maximally coherent state by means of energy-preserving quantum operations.

OEKG: The Open Event Knowledge Graph

Accessing and understanding contemporary and historical events of global impact such as the US elections and the Olympic Games is a major prerequisite for cross-lingual event analytics that investigate event causes, perception and consequences across country borders. In this paper, we present the Open Event Knowledge Graph (OEKG), a multilingual, event-centric, temporal knowledge graph composed of seven different data sets from multiple application domains, including question answering, entity recommendation and named entity recognition. These data sets are all integrated through an easy-to-use and robust pipeline and by linking to the event-centric knowledge graph EventKG. We describe their common schema and demonstrate the use of the OEKG at the example of three use cases: type-specific image retrieval, hybrid question answering over knowledge graphs and news articles, as well as language-specific event recommendation. The OEKG and its query endpoint are publicly available.

Quantifying the value of transient voltage sources

Some voltage sources are transient, lasting only for a moment of time, such as the voltage generated by converting a human motion into electricity. Such sources moreover tend to have a degree of randomness as well as internal resistance. We investigate how to put a number to how valuable a given transient source is. We derive several candidate measures via a systematic approach. We establish an inter-convertibility hierarchy between such sources, where inter-conversion means adding passive interface circuits to the sources. Resistors at the ambient temperature are at the bottom of this hierarchy and sources with low internal resistance and high internal voltages are at the top. We provide three possible measures for a given source that assign a number to the source respecting this hierarchy. One measure captures how much ``unitdc" the source contains, meaning $1$ V dc with $1\Omega$ internal resistance for $1$s. Another measure relates to the signal-to-noise ratio of the voltage time-series whereas a third is based on the relative entropy between the voltage probability distribution and a thermal noise resistor. We argue that the unitdc measure is particularly useful by virtue of its operational interpretation in terms of the number of unit dc sources that one needs to combine to create the source or that can be distilled from the source.

Equilibrium potential profile across magnetic field in inhomogeneous electronegative plasma

This paper presents the plasma potential distribution across magnetic field lines in an argon/oxygen plasma created by 13.56 MHz CCRF discharge consisting of a pair of ring electrodes. It is found that the radial plasma density, electron temperature, and plasma potential shows unusual trends as the magnetic field strength and gas pressure increase. An analytical model has been formulated to explain the radial plasma potential profile when the short-circuiting effect due to conducting boundaries can be neglected. It is found that with certain approximations, the plasma potential distribution can be very well related to the local plasma density, electron temperature, and bulk electronegativity similar to a Boltzmann relation.

MLM: A Benchmark Dataset for Multitask Learning with Multiple Languages and Modalities

In this paper, we introduce the MLM (Multiple Languages and Modalities) dataset - a new resource to train and evaluate multitask systems on samples in multiple modalities and three languages. The generation process and inclusion of semantic data provide a resource that further tests the ability for multitask systems to learn relationships between entities. The dataset is designed for researchers and developers who build applications that perform multiple tasks on data encountered on the web and in digital archives. A second version of MLM provides a geo-representative subset of the data with weighted samples for countries of the European Union. We demonstrate the value of the resource in developing novel applications in the digital humanities with a motivating use case and specify a benchmark set of tasks to retrieve modalities and locate entities in the dataset. Evaluation of baseline multitask and single task systems on the full and geo-representative versions of MLM demonstrate the challenges of generalising on diverse data. In addition to the digital humanities, we expect the resource to contribute to research in multimodal representation learning, location estimation, and scene understanding.

Fast tests for probing the causal structure of quantum processes

The identification of causal relations is a cornerstone of the scientific method. Traditional approaches to this task are based on classical statistics. However, such classical approaches do not apply in the quantum domain, where a broader spectrum of causal relations becomes accessible. New approaches to quantum causal inference have been developed in recent years, and promising new features have been discovered. In this paper, we review and partly expand the framework and results of Ref. [1], which demonstrated quantum speedups in the identification of various types of causal relations induced by reversible processes.

Deep Reader: Information extraction from Document images via relation extraction and Natural Language

Recent advancements in the area of Computer Vision with state-of-art Neural Networks has given a boost to Optical Character Recognition (OCR) accuracies. However, extracting characters/text alone is often insufficient for relevant information extraction as documents also have a visual structure that is not captured by OCR. Extracting information from tables, charts, footnotes, boxes, headings and retrieving the corresponding structured representation for the document remains a challenge and finds application in a large number of real-world use cases. In this paper, we propose a novel enterprise based end-to-end framework called DeepReader which facilitates information extraction from document images via identification of visual entities and populating a meta relational model across different entities in the document image. The model schema allows for an easy to understand abstraction of the entities detected by the deep vision models and the relationships between them. DeepReader has a suite of state-of-the-art vision algorithms which are applied to recognize handwritten and printed text, eliminate noisy effects, identify the type of documents and detect visual entities like tables, lines and boxes. Deep Reader maps the extracted entities into a rich relational schema so as to capture all the relevant relationships between entities (words, textboxes, lines etc) detected in the document. Relevant information and fields can then be extracted from the document by writing SQL queries on top of the relationship tables. A natural language based interface is added on top of the relationship schema so that a non-technical user, specifying the queries in natural language, can fetch the information with minimal effort. In this paper, we also demonstrate many different capabilities of Deep Reader and report results on a real-world use case.

Coherence breaking channels and coherence sudden death

Quantum noise is ubiquitous to quantum systems as they incessantly interact with their surroundings and results in degrading useful resources such as coherence for single quantum systems and quantum correlations for multipartite systems. Given the importance of these resources in various quantum information processing protocols, it is of utmost importance to characterize how deteriorating is a particular noise scenario (quantum channel) in reference to a certain resource? Here we develop a theory of coherence breaking channels for single quantum systems. Any quantum channel on a single quantum system will be called a coherence breaking channel if it is an incoherent channel and maps any state to an incoherent state. We explicitly and exhaustively characterize these coherence breaking channels. Moreover, we define the coherence breaking indices for incoherent quantum channels and present various examples to elucidate this concept. We further introduce the concept of coherence sudden death under noisy evolutions and make an explicit connection of the phenomenon of coherence sudden death with the coherence breaking channels and the coherence breaking indices together with various suggestive examples. Furthermore, for higher dimensional Hilbert spaces, we establish the typicality of the dynamics of coherence under any incoherent quantum channel exploiting the concentration of measure phenomenon.
