GLR-MM: Graph-Based Global-Local Reconstruction for Robust Multimodal Chest X-ray and EHR Representation Learning under Missing Modalities

Clinical multimodal models must often predict before all chest X-ray (CXR) and electronic health record (EHR) inputs are available. Existing approaches align observed representations, model missingness, or reconstruct across modalities, but do not jointly exploit within-patient and clinically similar inter-patient evidence. We propose GLR-MM, a Graph-Based Global-Local Reconstruction framework for early ICU mortality prediction. It maps five CXR-EHR modalities to a shared space, reconstructs missing embeddings through complementary local cross-modal and global graph-attention branches, adaptively fuses their estimates, and optimizes class-balanced prediction, reconstruction, and contrastive objectives. On 9,620 MIMIC-derived ICU stays, we evaluate 10%, 30%, and 50% random modality missingness with shared deterministic masks. MUSE performs better under mild and moderate missingness, whereas GLR-MM achieves higher AUROC and AUPRC at 50% by 0.0088 and 0.0249, respectively. These results indicate that graph-guided reconstruction is most useful when inputs are severely incomplete.

Controllable selective exfoliation of high-quality graphene nanosheets and nanodots by ionic liquid assisted grinding

Bulk quantities of graphene nanosheets and nanodots have been selectively fabricated by mechanical grinding exfoliation of natural graphite in a small quantity of ionic liquids. The resulting graphene sheets and dots are solvent free with low levels of naturally absorbed oxygen, inherited from the starting graphite. The sheets are only two to five layers thick. The graphene nanodots have diameters in the range of 9-29 nm and heights in the range of 1-16 nm, which can be controlled by changing the processing time.

Probing the Thermal Deoxygenation of Graphene Oxide using High Resolution In Situ X-Ray based Spectroscopies

Despite the recent developments in Graphene Oxide due to its importance as a host precursor of Graphene, the detailed electronic structure and its evolution during the thermal reduction remain largely unknown, hindering its potential applications. We show that a combination of high resolution in situ X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopies offer a powerful approach to monitor the deoxygenation process and comprehensively evaluate the electronic structure of Graphene Oxide thin films at different stages of the thermal reduction process. It is established that the edge plane carboxyl groups are highly unstable, whereas carbonyl groups are more difficult to remove. The results consistently support the formation of phenol groups through reaction of basal plane epoxide groups with adjacent hydroxyl groups at moderate degrees of thermal activation (~400 °C). The phenol groups are predominant over carbonyl groups and survive even at a temperature of 1000 °C. For the first time a drastic increase in the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level at 600 °C is observed, suggesting a progressive restoration of aromatic structure in the thermally reduced graphene oxide
