Fortuity on the conifold

To study the BPS black hole states in typical $\mathcal{N}=1$ AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ models, we formulate a classical cohomology problem in the Klebanov-Witten theory, which is defined at a strongly coupled RG fixed point. We set up its weakly coupled cohomology problem in the UV theory, suggesting a refined notion of monotonous and fortuitous cohomologies so that simple baryonic operators belong to the former. We construct infinitely many fortuitous cohomologies in the $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ theory and interpret some of them as $N=2$ versions of hairy black hole states dressed by baryonic condensates. We also comment that the recently constructed fortuitous cohomologies in ABJM exhibit generalized monotonicity.

Towards OSV in AdS

We use supersymmetric localization for 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs to establish a relation of the form $Z_{S^1\times S^2} \sim |Z_{S^3_b}|^2$ between the superconformal index and the squashed three-sphere partition function. This applies to general 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and is derived using a saddle point approximation in the Cardy-like limit of small $S^1$ radius and large squashing parameter. We also show a similar relation between the topologically twisted index and the squashed sphere partition function. In the context of holography our results lead to a relation between the partition function of supersymmetric asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes and the large $N$ limit of $Z_{S^3_b}$ of the dual SCFT. Since the latter encodes the gauged supergravity prepotential, this result is akin to the OSV conjecture for asymptotically flat black holes. We confirm this relation in detail for SCFTs arising from M2-branes using recent large $N$ results from supersymmetric localization. We also briefly discuss a similar relation for 5d SCFTs and its implications for asymptotically AdS$_6$ black holes.

Rethinking Network Topologies for Cost-Effective Mixture-of-Experts LLM Serving

Mixture-of-experts (MoE) architectures have turned LLM serving into a cluster-scale workload in which communication consumes a considerable portion of LLM serving runtime. This has prompted industry to invest heavily in expensive high-bandwidth scale-up networks. We question whether such costly infrastructure is strictly necessary. We present the first systematic cross-layer analysis of network cost-effectiveness for MoE LLM serving, comparing four representative XPU (e.g., GPU/TPU) topologies (scale-up, scale-out, 3D torus, and 3D full-mesh). We find that lower-cost switchless topologies are more cost-effective than the scale-up topology across all serving scenarios explored, improving cost-effectiveness by 20.6-56.2%. In particular, the 3D full-mesh topology is Pareto-optimal in terms of the performance-cost tradeoff. We also find that current scale-up link bandwidths are over-provisioned: reducing the link bandwidth improves throughput per cost by up to 27%. A forward-looking analysis of upcoming GPU generations indicates that the cost-performance advantage of switchless networks will likely persist.

On holography with ADE singularities

We study aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence for $\mathcal{N}=4$ $U(N)$ super Yang-Mills theory on $S^3/Γ$, where $Γ\subset SU(2)$ is a finite subgroup, leading to an ADE singularity in the bulk AdS geometry. We show that a large vacuum degeneracy arises from the choice of gauge holonomy on $S^3/Γ$. On the gravity side, we argue that the bulk ADE singularity supports topological degrees of freedom responsible for this degeneracy. We then provide a holographic derivation of a corresponding large vacuum degeneracy for class S theories of type $U(N)$, showing that these topological degrees of freedom admit an effective description in terms of a three-dimensional level-$N$ Chern-Simons theory, whose gauge group $\mathsf{G}$ is determined by $Γ$. Finally, we discuss how the one-form symmetries of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory are realized on the Chern-Simons theory side.

Supersymmetric Grey Galaxies, Dual Dressed Black Holes and the Superconformal Index

Motivated by the recent construction of grey galaxy and Dual Dressed Black Hole solutions in $AdS_5\times S^5$, we present two conjectures relating to the large $N$ entropy of supersymmetric states in ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory. Our first conjecture asserts the existence of a large number of supersymmetric states which can be thought of as a non interacting mix of supersymmetric black holes and supersymmetric `gravitons'. It predicts a microcanonical phase diagram of supersymmetric states with eleven distinct phases, and makes a sharp prediction for the supersymmetric entropy (as a function of 5 charges) in each of these phases. The microcanonical version of the superconformal index involves a sum over states - with alternating signs - over a line in 5 parameter charge space. Our second (and more tentative) conjecture asserts that this sum is dominated by the point on the line that has the largest supersymmetric entropy. This conjecture predicts a large $N$ formula for the superconformal index as a function of indicial charges, and predicts a microcanonical indicial phase diagram with nine distinct phases. It predicts agreement between the superconformal index and black hole entropy in one phase (so over one range of charges), but disagreement in other phases (and so at other values of charges). We compare our predictions against numerically evaluated superconformal index at $N\leq10$, and find qualitative agreement.

Dual Dressed Black Holes as the end point of the Charged Superradiant instability in ${\cal N} = 4$ Yang Mills

Charged Black holes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ suffer from superradiant instabilities over a range of energies. Hairy black hole solutions (constructed within gauged supergravity) have previously been proposed as endpoints to this instability. We demonstrate that these hairy black holes are themselves unstable to the emission of large dual giant gravitons. We propose that the endpoint to this instability is given by Dual Dressed Black Holes (DDBH)s; configurations consisting of one, two, or three very large dual giant gravitons surrounding a core $AdS$ black hole with one, two, or three $SO(6)$ chemical potentials equal to unity. The dual giants each live at $AdS$ radial coordinates of order $\sqrt{N}$ and each carry charge of order $N^2$. The large separation makes DDBHs a very weakly interacting mix of their components and allows for a simple computation of their thermodynamics. We conjecture that DDBHs dominate the phase diagram of ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills over a range of energies around the BPS plane, and provide an explicit construction of this phase diagram, briefly discussing the interplay with supersymmetry. We develop the quantum description of dual giants around black hole backgrounds and explicitly verify that DDBHs are stable to potential tunneling instabilities, precisely when the chemical potentials of the core black holes equal unity. We also construct the 10-dimensional DDBH bulk solutions.

Scalable Wavelength Arbitration for Microring-based DWDM Transceivers

This paper introduces the concept of autonomous microring arbitration, or wavelength arbitration, to address the challenge of multi-microring initialization in microring-based Dense-Wavelength-Division-Multiplexed (DWDM) transceivers. This arbitration is inherently policy-driven, defining critical system characteristics such as the spectral ordering of microrings. Furthermore, to facilitate large-scale deployment, the arbitration algorithms must operate independently of specific wavelength information and be resilient to system variability. Addressing these complexities requires a holistic approach that encompasses the entire system, from device-level variabilities to the transceiver electrical-to-optical interface - this system-wide perspective is the focus of this paper. To support efficient analysis, we develop a hierarchical framework incorporating an ideal, wavelength-aware arbitration model to examine arbitration failures at both the policy and algorithmic levels. The effectiveness of this approach is demonstrated in two ways: by analyzing the robustness of each policy in relation to device variabilities, and by developing an algorithm that achieves near-perfect alignment with the ideal model, offering superior robustness compared to the traditional sequential tuning method. Towards quantum black hole microstates

We study the cohomology of local BPS operators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory. The finite $N$ cohomologies consist of the graviton part (subject to the stringy exclusion principle) and the rest which may describe black hole microstates in quantum AdS/CFT. We construct an infinite tower of non-graviton cohomologies in the $SU(2)$ theory and study to what extent they simulate quantum black holes. We find signals for partial no-hair behaviors by showing that certain gravitons are forbidden to dress these cohomologies. This is in qualitative agreement with the perturbative hairs allowed around black holes, which also leads us to a natural setup to construct hairy BPS black holes. The cohomologies are simpler to study in the BMN matrix model truncation of the classical field theory.

Exact QFT duals of AdS black holes

We construct large $N$ saddle points of the matrix model for the $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills index dual to the BPS black holes in $AdS_5\times S^5$, in two different setups. When the two complex chemical potentials for the angular momenta are collinear, we find linear eigenvalue distributions which solve the large $N$ saddle point equation. When the chemical potentials are not collinear, we find novel solutions given by areal eigenvalue distributions after slightly reformulating the saddle point problem. We also construct a class of multi-cut saddle points, showing that they sometimes admit nontrivial filling fractions. As a byproduct, we find that the Bethe ansatz equation emerges from our saddle point equation.

Superconformal Indices of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs and Holography

We study the superconformal index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories on $S^1\times_ω S^2$ in the Cardy-like limit where the radius of the $S^1$ is much smaller than that of the $S^2$. We show that the first two leading terms in this Cardy-like expansion are dictated by the Bethe Ansatz formulation of the topologically twisted index of the same theory. We apply this relation to 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ holographic superconformal field theories describing the low-energy dynamics of $N$ M2-branes and derive closed form expressions, valid to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion, for the two leading terms in the Cardy-like expansion of the superconformal index. We also discuss the implications of our results for the entropy of supersymmetric Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$ and the four-derivative corrections to 4d gauged supergravity.

Finite $N$ black hole cohomologies

We study new cohomologies for the BPS operators of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory with $SU(3)$ and $SU(4)$ gauge groups, to better understand the black hole microstates. We first study the index of these black hole operators and identify their apparent threshold levels. For $SU(3)$, we find many towers of states and partial no-hair behaviors. We explicitly construct the threshold cohomology in the $SU(3)$ theory. We study throughout this paper a subsector of the field theory corresponding to the BMN matrix theory. We also argue that the BMN sector exhibits a black hole like entropy growth at large $N$.

Large AdS black holes from QFT

We study the index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory on $S^3\times\mathbb{R}$ at large angular momenta. A generalized Cardy limit exhibits macroscopic entropy at large $N$. Our result is derived using free QFT analysis, and also a background field method on $S^3$. The index sets a lower bound on the entropy. It saturates the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of known supersymmetric AdS$_5$ black holes, thus accounting for their microstates. We further analyze the so-called Macdonald index, exploring small black holes and possibly new black holes reminiscent of hairy black holes. Finally, we study aspects of large supersymmetric AdS$_7$ black holes, using background field method on $S^5$ and 't Hooft anomalies.

The Yang-Mills duals of small AdS black holes

We study the large $N$ matrix model for the index of 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory and its truncations to understand the dual AdS$_5$ black holes. Numerical studies of the truncated models provide insights on the black hole physics, some of which we investigate analytically with the full Yang-Mills matrix model. In particular, we find many branches of saddle points which describe the known black hole solutions. We analytically construct the saddle points dual to the small black holes whose sizes are much smaller than the AdS radius. They include the asymptotically flat BMPV black holes embedded in large AdS with novel thermodynamic instabilities.

The shape of non-graviton operators for $SU(2)$

The BPS spectrum of AdS/CFT exhibits multi-gravitons at low energies, while having black hole states at higher energies. This can be studied concretely in AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ in terms of classical cohomologies, even in the quantum regimes at finite $1/N$. Recently, Chang and Lin found a threshold for non-graviton states in the $SU(2)$ maximal super-Yang-Mills theory. We explicitly construct and present this threshold cohomology.

Large $N$ Universality of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ Superconformal Index and AdS Black Holes

We study the large $N$ limit of the matrix models associated with the superconformal indices of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories. We find that for a large class of $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal gauge theories, the superconformal indices in the large $N$ limit of such theories are dominated by the 'parallelogram' saddle, providing $O(N^2)$ free energy for the generic value of chemical potentials. This saddle corresponds to BPS black holes in AdS$_5$ whenever a holographic dual description is available. Our saddle applies to a large class of gauge theories, including ADE quiver gauge theories, and the theories with rank-2 tensor matters. Our analysis works for most $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal gauge theories that admit a suitable large $N$ limit while keeping the flavor symmetry fixed. We also find 'multi-cut' saddle points, which correspond to the orbifolded Euclidean black holes in AdS$_5$.

Large AdS$_6$ black holes from CFT$_5$

We study supersymmetric AdS$_6$ black holes at large angular momenta, from the index of 5d SCFTs on $S^4\times\mathbb{R}$ in the large $N$ and Cardy limit. Our examples are the strong coupling limits of 5d gauge theories on the D4-D8-O8 system. The large $N$ free energy scales like $N^{5/2}$, statistically accounting for the entropy of large black holes in AdS$_6$. Instanton solitons play subtle roles to realize these deconfined degrees of freedom.

Supersymmetric Cardy Formula and the Weak Gravity Conjecture in AdS/CFT

The Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) in anti-de Sitter spacetime (AdS) asserts the existence of an operator in the boundary conformal field theory (CFT) whose scaling dimension-to-charge ratio satisfies a certain upper bound. This bound is specified by the ratio of the conformal central charge $c$ and the flavor central charge $k_F$. We propose a modified bound in AdS5/CFT4, determined by a combination of two central charges $3c-2a$ instead of $c$. This combination arises in the Cardy-like limit of the 4d superconformal index, which captures the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large BPS black holes in AdS5. Using the new bound, we find that certain superconformal field theories (SCFTs) that are previously thought to violate the AdS WGC, including SQCDs in the conformal window, do satisfy the WGC. We check this version of the WGC against all possible superconformal gauge theories with SU(N) gauge group admitting a large N limit when the superpotential is absent. We conjecture the modified version of the WGC is a generic property of any 4d SCFT, regardless of the existence of a weakly coupled gravity dual or a large N limit.

Large $N$ Superconformal Indices for 3d Holographic SCFTs

We study a limit of the superconformal index of the ABJM theory on $S^1\times S^2$ in which the size of the circle is much smaller than the radius of the two-sphere. We derive closed form expressions for the two leading terms in this Cardy-like limit which are valid to all orders in the $1/N$ expansion. These results are facilitated by a judicious rewriting of the superconformal index which establishes a connection with the Bethe Ansatz Equations that control the topologically twisted index. Using the same technique we extend these results to the superconformal index of another holographic theory: 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM coupled to one adjoint and $N_f$ fundamental hypermultiplets. We discuss the implications of our results for holography and the physics of charged rotating black holes in AdS$_4$.
