Constraint Maps: Insights and Related Themes

This paper explores recent progress related to constraint maps. Building on the exposition in [14], our goal is to provide a clear and accessible account of some of the more intricate arguments behind the main results in this work. Along the way, we include several new results of independent value. In particular, we give optimal geometric conditions on the target manifold that guarantee a unique continuation result for the projected image map. We also prove that the gradient of a minimizing harmonic map (or, more generally, of a minimizing constraint map) is an $A_\infty$-weight, and therefore satisfies a strong form of the unique continuation principle. In addition, we outline possible directions for future research and highlight several open problems that may interest researchers working on free boundary problems and harmonic maps.

Constraint maps and free boundaries

In this short expository note, we present a selection of classic and recent ideas in free boundary theory, with a focus on the vectorial case, referred to here as constraint maps. The note includes a brief historical perspective and highlights the latest heuristic-level results.

Constraint maps with free boundaries: the Bernoulli case

In this manuscript, we delve into the study of maps $u\in W^{1,2}(Ω;\overline M)$ that minimize the Alt-Caffarelli energy functional $$ \int_Ω(|Du|^2 + q^2 χ_{u^{-1}(M)})\,dx, $$ under the condition that the image $u(Ω)$ is confined within $\overline M$. Here, $Ω$ denotes a bounded domain in the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^n$ (with $n\geq 1$), and $M$ represents a smooth domain in the target space $\mathbb{R}^m$ (where $m\geq 2$). Since our minimizing constraint maps coincide with harmonic maps in the interior of the coincidence set, ${\rm int}(u^{-1}(\partial M))$, such maps are prone to developing discontinuities due to their inherent nature. This research marks the commencement of an in-depth analysis of potential singularities that might arise within and around the free boundary. Our first significant contribution is the validity of a $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem. This theorem is founded on a novel method of Lipschitz approximation near points exhibiting low energy. Utilizing this approximation and extending the analysis through a bootstrapping approach, we show Lipschitz continuity of our maps whenever the energy is small energy. Our subsequent key finding reveals that, whenever the complement of $M$ is uniformly convex and of class $C^3$, the maps minimizing the Alt-Caffarelli energy with a positive parameter $q$ exhibit Lipschitz continuity within a universally defined neighborhood of the non-coincidence set $u^{-1}(M)$. In particular, this Lipschitz continuity extends to the free boundary. A noteworthy consequence of our findings is the smoothness of flat free boundaries and of the resulting image maps.

Constraint maps: singularities vs free boundaries

Energy-minimizing constraint maps are a natural extension of the obstacle problem within a vectorial framework. Due to inherent topological constraints, these maps manifest a diverse structure that includes singularities similar to harmonic maps, branch points reminiscent of minimal surfaces, and the intricate free-boundary behavior of the obstacle problem. The complexity of these maps poses significant challenges to their analysis. In this paper, we first focus on constraint maps with uniformly convex obstacles and establish continuity (and therefore higher-order regularity) within a uniform neighborhood of the free boundary. More precisely, thanks to a new quantitative unique continuation principle near singularities (which is new even in the setting of classical harmonic maps), we prove that, in the uniformly convex setting, topological singularities can only lie in the interior of the contact set. We then establish the optimality of this result. Second, while exploring the structure of the free boundary, we investigate the presence of branch points and show how they lead to completely new types of singularities not present in the scalar case.

Regularity near the fixed boundary for transmission systems

Given $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 2$, $D\subset Ω$ open, and $u:Ω\to \mathbb{R}^m$, we study elliptic systems of the type $$ {\rm div} \big( ( A + (B- A)χ_D)\nabla u\big) = 0 \quad \text{in $Ω\cap B_1$,} $$ for some uniformly elliptic tensors $A$ and $B$ with Hölder continuous entries. We show that, given appropriate boundary data, the Lipschitz regularity of $u$ inside $B_1 \cap D$ is transmitted to $B_{1/2}\cap Ω$ up to the boundary of $Ω$. This corresponds to the boundary counterpart of the interior regularity results in Figalli-Kim-Shahgholian, Nonlinear Anal. 2022.

Higher order interpolative geometries and gradient regularity in evolutionary obstacle problems

We prove new optimal $C^{1,α}$ regularity results for obstacle problems involving evolutionary $p$-Laplace type operators in the degenerate regime $p > 2$. Our main results include the optimal regularity improvement at free boundary points in intrinsic backward $p$-paraboloids, up to the critical exponent, $α\leq 2/(p-2)$, and the optimal regularity across the free boundaries in the full cylinders up to a universal threshold. Moreover, we provide an intrinsic criterion by which the optimal regularity improvement at free boundaries can be extended to the entire cylinders. An important feature of our analysis is that we do not impose any assumption on the time derivative of the obstacle. Our results are formulated in function spaces associated to what we refer to as higher order or $C^{1,α}$ intrinsic interpolative geometries.

Almost minimizers to a transmission problem for $(p,q)$-Laplacian

This paper concerns almost minimizers of the functional $$ J(v,Ω) = \int_Ω\left( |D v^+|^p + |D v^-|^q \right) dx, $$ where $1<p \neq q< \infty$ and $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 1$. We prove the universal Hölder regularity of local $(1+ε)$-minimizers, when $ε$ is universally small. Moreover, we prove almost Lipschitz regularity of the local $(1+ε)$-minimizers, when $|p-q|\ll 1$ and $ε\ll 1$.

Constraint maps with free boundaries: the obstacle case

This paper revives a four-decade-old problem concerning regularity theory for (continuous) constraint maps with free boundaries. Dividing the map into two parts, the distance part and the projected image to the constraint, one can prove various properties for each component. As already pointed out in the literature, the distance part falls under the classical obstacle problem, which is well-studied by classical methods. A perplexing issue, untouched in the literature, is the properties of the projected image and its higher regularity, which we show to be at most of class $C^{2,1}$. In arbitrary dimensions, we prove that the image map is globally of class $W^{3,BMO}$, and locally of class $C^{2,1}$ around the regular part of the free boundary. The issue becomes more delicate around singular points, and we resolve it in two dimensions. In the appendix, we extend some of our results to what we call leaky maps.

A transmission problem for $(p,q)$-Laplacian

In this paper, we consider a double-phase problem characterised by a transmission that takes place across the zero level "surface" of the minimiser of the functional $$ J(v,Ω) = \int_Ω\left( |D v^+|^p + |D v^-|^q \right) dx. $$ We prove that a minimiser exists, and is Hölder continuous, whence using an intrinsic variation we prove a weak formulation of the free boundary condition across the zero level surface, formally represented by $$ (q-1)|D u^-|^q = (p-1) |D u^+|^p, \quad \hbox{on } \partial \{u > 0\}. $$ We show that the free boundary is $C^{1,α}$ a.e. with respect to the measure $Δ_p u^+$, whose support is of $σ$-finite $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure.

Uniform Estimates in Periodic Homogenization of Fully Nonlinear Elliptic Equations

This article is concerned with uniform $C^{1,α}$ and $C^{1,1}$ estimates in periodic homogenization of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. The analysis is based on the compactness method, which involves linearization of the operator at each approximation step. Due to the nonlinearity of the equations, the linearized operators involve the Hessian of correctors, which appear in the previous step. The involvement of the Hessian of the correctors deteriorates the regularity of the linearized operator, and sometimes even changes its oscillating pattern. These issues are resolved with new approximation techniques, which yield a precise decomposition of the regular part and the irregular part of the homogenization process, along with a uniform control of the Hessian of the correctors in an intermediate level. The approximation techniques are even new in the context of linear equations. Our argument can be applied not only to concave operators, but also to certain class of non-concave operators.

Lipschitz Regularity in Vectorial Linear Transmission Problems

We consider vector-valued solutions to a linear transmission problem, and we prove that Lipschitz-regularity on one phase is transmitted to the next phase. More exactly, given a solution $u:B_1\subset \mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m$ to the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \mbox{div} ((A + (B-A)χ_D )\nabla u) = 0 \quad \text{in }B_1, \end{equation*} where $A$ and $B$ are Dini continuous, uniformly elliptic matrices, we prove that if $\nabla u \in L^{\infty} (D)$ then $u$ is Lipschitz in $B_{1/2}$. A similar result is also derived for the parabolic counterpart of this problem.

Nodal Sets for Broken Quasilinear Partial Differential Equations with Dini Coefficients

This paper is concerned with the nodal set of weak solutions to a broken quasilinear partial differential equation, \begin{equation*} \mbox{div} (a_+ \nabla u^+ - a_- \nabla u^-) = \mbox{div} f, \end{equation*} where $a_+$ and $a_-$ are uniformly elliptic, Dini continuous coefficient matrices, subject to a strong correlation that $a_+$ and $a_-$ are a multiple of some scalar function to each other. Under such a structural condition, we develop an iteration argument to achieve higher-order approximation of solutions at a singular point, which is also new for standard elliptic PDEs below Hölder regime, and as a result, we establish a structure theorem for singular sets. We also estimate the Hausdorff measure of nodal sets, provided that the vanishing order of given solution is bounded throughout its nodal set, via an approach that extends the classical argument to certain solutions with discontinuous gradient. Besides, we also prove Lipschitz regularity of solutions and continuous differentiability of their nodal set around regular points.

A Comprehensive Model of the Degradation of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and Application for Efficient Stable Blue Phosphorescent Devices with Reduced Influence of Polarons

We present a comprehensive model to analyze, quantitatively, and predict the process of degradation of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) considering all possible degradation mechanisms, i.e., polaron, exciton, exciton-polaron interactions, exciton-exciton interactions, and a newly proposed impurity effect. The loss of efficiency during degradation is presented as a function of quencher density, the density and generation mechanisms of which were extracted using a voltage rise model. The comprehensive model was applied to stable blue phosphorescent OLEDs (PhOLEDs), and the results showed that the model described the voltage rise and external quantum efficiency (EQE) loss very well, and that the quenchers in emitting layer (EML) were mainly generated by dopant polarons. Quencher formation was confirmed from a mass spectrometry. The polaron density per dopant molecule in EML was reduced by controlling the emitter doping ratio, resulting in the highest reported LT50 of 431 hours at an initial brightness of 500 cd/m2 with CIEy<0.25 and high external quantum efficiency (EQE) >18%.

Higher Order Convergence Rates in Theory of Homogenization II: Oscillatory Initial Data

We establish higher order convergence rates in periodic homogenization of fully nonlinear uniformly parabolic Cauchy problems accompanied with rapidly oscillating initial data. Such result is new even for linear problems. Here we construct higher order initial layer and interior correctors, which describe the oscillatory behavior near the initial and interior time zone of the domain. To construct higher order correctors, we develop a regularity theory in macroscopic scales, and prove an exponential decay estimate for initial layer correctors. The higher order expansion requires an iteration process: successively correcting the initial layer, then the interior. This leads to a more complicated asymptotic expansion, as compared to the non-oscillating data case, and this complexity is present even in the linear case. A notable observation for fully nonlinear operators is that even if the given operator is space-time periodic, the interior correctors become aperiodic in the time variable as we proceed with the iteration process. Moreover, each interior corrector of higher order is paired with a space-time periodic version, and the difference between the two decays exponentially fast with time.

Isolated Singularities for Semilinear Elliptic Systems with Power-Law Nonlinearity

We study the system $-Δ\mathbf{u}=| \mathbf{u}|^{α-1} \mathbf{u}$ with $1<α\leq\frac{n+2}{n-2}$, where $ \mathbf{u}=(u_1,\dots,u_m)$, $m\geq 1$, is a $C^2$ nonnegative function that develops an isolated singularity in a domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$. Due to the multiplicity of the components of $ \mathbf{u}$, we observe a new Pohozaev invariant other than the usual one in the scalar case, and also a new class of singular solutions provided that the new invariant is nontrivial. Aligned with the classical theory of the scalar equation, we classify the solutions on the whole space as well as the punctured space, and analyze the exact asymptotic behavior of local solutions around the isolated singularity. On the technical level, we adopt the method of the moving spheres and the balanced-energy-type monotonicity functionals.

Exact behavior around isolated singularity for semilinear elliptic equations with a log-type nonlinearity

We study the semilinear elliptic equation \begin{equation*} -Δu=u^α|\log u|^β\quad\text{in }B_1\setminus\{0\}, \end{equation*} where $B_1\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 3$, $\frac{n}{n-2} < α< \frac{n+2}{n-2}$ and $-\infty<β<\infty$. Our main result establishes that nonnegative solution $u\in C^2(B_1\setminus\{0\})$ of the above equation either has a removable singularity at the origin or behaves like \begin{equation*} u(x) = A(1+o(1)) |x|^{-\frac{2}{α-1}} \left(\log \frac{1}{|x|}\right)^{-\fracβ{α-1}}\quad\text{as } x\rightarrow 0, \end{equation*} with \begin{equation*} A=\left[\left(\frac{2}{α-1}\right)^{1-β}\left(n-2-\frac{2}{α-1}\right)\right]^{\frac{1}{α-1}}. \end{equation*}

Higher Order Convergence Rates in Theory of Homogenization III: viscous Hamilton-Jacobi Equations

In this paper, we establish the higher order convergence rates in periodic homogenization of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which is convex and grows quadratically in the gradient variable. We observe that although the nonlinear structure governs the first order approximation, the nonlinear effect is absorbed as an external source term of a linear equation in the second and higher order approximation. Moreover, we find that the geometric shape of the initial data has to be chosen carefully according to the effective Hamiltonian, in order to achieve the higher order convergence rates.

Nodal Sets for "Broken" Quasilinear PDEs

We study the local behavior of the nodal sets of the solutions to elliptic quasilinear equations with nonlinear conductivity part, \begin{equation*} \operatorname{div}(A_s(x,u)\nabla u)=\operatorname{div}{\vec f}(x), \end{equation*} where $A_s(x,u)$ has "broken" derivatives of order $s\geq 0$, such as \begin{equation*} A_s(x,u) = a(x) + b(x)(u^+)^s, \end{equation*} with $(u^+)^0$ being understood as the characteristic function on $\{u>0\}$. The vector ${\vec f}(x)$ is assumed to be $C^α$ in case $s=0$, and $C^{1,α}$ (or higher) in case $s>0$. Using geometric methods, we prove almost complete results (in analogy with standard PDEs) concerning the behavior of the nodal sets. More exactly, we show that the nodal sets, where solutions have (linear) nondegeneracy, are locally smooth graphs. Degenerate points are shown to have structures that follow the lines of arguments as that of the nodal sets for harmonic functions, and general PDEs.
