Graphs with three distinct distance eigenvalues, one of which is zero

Koolen, Hayat and Iqbal asked for the connected graphs whose distance matrix has exactly three distinct eigenvalues, the middle one being $0$. The examples they gave, namely the Johnson graphs, the Hamming graphs and the halved cubes, are distance-regular. In this note, we show that the distance spectrum of such a graph is $\{ρ,0,-c\}$ with integers $c\ge2$ and $c\midρ$. For $c=2$ the graphs are exactly the cocktail party graphs, and for $c=3$ they are exactly the Cartesian product $K_3\,\square\,K_3$ of two triangles, the Petersen graph and its complement. We also show that such a graph need not be transmission-regular: Seidel switching the lattice graph $K_6\,\square\,K_6$ with respect to a line and the triangular graph $T(11)$ with respect to a maximal clique of size $10$ gives graphs on $36$ and $55$ vertices with distance spectra $\{54,0^{(26)},(-6)^{(9)}\}$ and $\{81,0^{(45)},(-9)^{(9)}\}$. Among the graphs of diameter $2$ obtained by switching a strongly regular graph with smallest eigenvalue $-2$ with respect to one part of an equitable partition, these two are the only ones that have exactly three distance eigenvalues and are not transmission-regular. We also observe that the transmission-regular graphs with exactly three distinct distance eigenvalues, the smallest one being $-3$, are exactly the complements of the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue $-2$ other than the cocktail party graphs.

The maximum spectral radius of outerplanar and planar $k$-uniform hypergraphs

For $k\ge3$, a $k$-angulation is a simple $2$-connected outerplane graph whose interior faces are bounded by $k$-cycles, and a closed $k$-angulation is a simple $2$-connected plane graph all of whose faces are bounded by $k$-cycles. Their face hypergraphs have the same vertices as the graphs; the hyperedges are the vertex sets of the interior faces, respectively all faces. For $k=3$, the extremal problems over these hypergraphs agree with those for the outerplanar and planar $3$-uniform hypergraphs of Ellingham, Lu and Wang, who determined the outerplanar maximizer for large $n$ and conjectured the planar one. In this paper, for each fixed $k$, we determine the hypergraphs of maximum spectral radius in both classes for all sufficiently large $n$ satisfying the corresponding face-count divisibility condition. In the outerplanar case, the unique extremal hypergraph is the face hypergraph of the fan, in which one vertex lies on every interior face. In the planar case with $k=3$, it is the face hypergraph of $K_2+P_{n-2}$, which confirms the conjecture of Ellingham, Lu and Wang. For $k\ge4$, the extremal hypergraphs are the face hypergraphs of balanced theta graphs, in which two vertices lie on every face. For $k=4$, the result holds for every $n\ge5$, with extremal hypergraph ${\mathcal H}(K_{2,n-2})$. For $k\ge6$ and an even number of faces, there are exactly $\lfloor(k-2)/2\rfloor$ extremal hypergraphs up to isomorphism.

Second largest eigenvalue thresholds for the vertex-connectivity of regular graphs

Let $λ_2(G)$ and $κ(G)$ denote the second largest adjacency eigenvalue and the vertex-connectivity of a graph $G$. For a non-complete $r$-regular graph $G$, Fiedler's inequality $λ_2(G)\ge r-κ(G)$ shows that $λ_2(G)<r-t$ forces $κ(G)\ge t+1$. The best such bound is known for $t=1$, by Zhang and Wang, and for $t=2$ with $r\ge4$, by Zhang. In this paper, for every $r\ge3$ and every integer $t$ with $2\le t\le r-1$, we give an upper bound on $λ_2(G)$ that forces an $r$-regular graph $G$ to satisfy $κ(G)\ge t+1$, and we determine exactly when this bound is best possible. For $\frac{r+2}{2}\le t\le r-1$, Fiedler's bound $r-t$ is already best possible. For $2\le t<\frac{r+2}{2}$, it is replaced by one of two explicit algebraic numbers, and the sign of an explicit polynomial $W(r,t)$, which never vanishes, decides which one applies. Each of the two numbers is attained exactly when $(r,t)$ satisfies an explicit arithmetic condition, and every extremal graph then consists of two cliques and an independent cut of size $t$. In this range our bound also improves a bound of Zhang that holds for every such $t$.

The minimum spectral radius of maximal outerplanar graphs

An outerplanar graph is \emph{maximal} if no edge can be added without losing outerplanarity. Lin and Ning determined the outerplanar graph with the largest spectral radius, and the maximizer is a maximal outerplanar graph. We determine the minimizer. In this paper, we prove that every $n$-vertex maximal outerplanar graph $G$ satisfies $ρ(G)\geρ(F_n)$, where $F_n$ is the zig-zag triangulation of the $n$-gon, that is, the square of the path on $n$ vertices, with equality if and only if $G=F_n$. The proof uses three local operations on maximal outerplanar graphs, each of which strictly decreases the spectral radius: the first reverses the way a piece is attached along a chord, and the second and third move a piece from one vertex to its twin across a chord when the twin carries nothing or a single ear, respectively. A graph at which no operation applies is $F_n$, or has spectral radius greater than $4$, or consists of a central triangle with three zig-zag blades of at least three triangles each and has at most $15$ vertices; in the last case it contains one of two explicit graphs on $12$ vertices whose spectral radius exceeds that of $F_{15}$. Since $ρ(F_n)<4$ for all $n$, this completes the proof. The numerical inequalities used along the way are certified by explicit integer vectors with small entries.

Exact local spectral thresholds for perfect matchings in $3$-graphs and $3$-partite $3$-graphs

For a $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $σ(H)$ be the minimum over the vertices of $H$ of the spectral radius of the link. Lin, Lu, Yuan and Zhao conjectured that $σ(H)>\tfrac{2n}3-2$ forces a perfect matching in a $3$-graph of order $n$ divisible by three, and Lu and Yuan conjectured that $σ(H)>τ(q)$ forces one in a $q$-balanced $3$-partite $3$-graph, where $τ(q)=\sqrt{q(q-1)/2}$ for odd $q$ and $τ(q)$ is given by a quartic for even $q$. In this paper, we prove both perfect matching conjectures for large order. Each proof passes through a stability theorem for fractional matchings: a fractional vertex cover of deficient weight with a zero coordinate is obtained, the link of that vertex carries the induced cover, and the spectral radius of such a link is bounded by an inequality whose extremal cases identify the corresponding space barriers.

The maximum spectral radius of uniform hypergraphs whose shadow excludes a complete or complete bipartite minor

For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$, the shadow of $\mathcal H$ is the graph whose edges are the pairs covered by a hyperedge. In this paper, for all sufficiently large $n$, we determine the $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraphs of maximum adjacency-tensor spectral radius whose shadow has no $K_t$ minor, for every $t\ge k+1$, and those whose shadow has no $K_{s,t}$ minor, for every $2\le s\le t$ with $s+t\ge k+1$ and every residue of $n-s+1$ modulo $t$; outside these ranges the problems are trivial. This extends to uniform hypergraphs the theorem of Tait on graphs with no $K_r$ or $K_{s,t}$ minor, whose remaining residues were settled by Zhai and Lin. In each case the extremal hypergraph is unique, and it is the $k$-clique hypergraph of the join of a clique with a graph that we call the light part. For $K_{s,t}$ the answer depends on $j=k-s+1$. When $j\le1$, the maximum has order $n^{(k-1)/k}$, and the light part is the one found by Zhai and Lin for the adjacency matrix, including its exceptional components. When $j\ge2$, a regime that does not occur for graphs, the maximum has order $n^{(s-1)/k}$ and $t$ enters its leading constant. The light part then consists of copies of $K_t$ and one smaller clique, with a single exception: for $(k,s,t)=(9,8,8)$ and $n-s+1\equiv2\pmod 8$, the complement of the Petersen graph appears. When the smaller clique has between $1$ and $j-1$ vertices, the extremal graph is not unique. In particular, for $t=8$, $4\le s\le7$, $k=s+1$ and $n-s+1\equiv2\pmod 8$, the clique hypergraph of the extremal graph of Zhai and Lin is not extremal. For $j\ge2$ the light part is determined by a weighted clique inequality, which for $j\ge3$ follows from a weighted form of the closed-neighborhood counting of Chao and Dong.

Extremal eigenvalues of combinatorial Hodge Laplacians

For a finite simplicial complex on $[n]$, the combinatorial Hodge Laplacian splits as $L_k=L_k^{\mathrm{up}}+L_k^{\mathrm{down}}$, and Duval and Reiner showed that $λ_{\max}(L_k^{\mathrm{up}})\le n$ in every dimension. We conjecture that $λ_{\max}(L_k^{\mathrm{up}})$ is in fact non-increasing in $k$, equivalently that $σ_{\max}(\partial_{k+1})\leσ_{\max}(\partial_k)$, and prove this unconditionally in two cases: when every missing $(k+1)$-face has at most $k+1$ missing facets, and for shifted complexes, where we also identify the extremal eigenvalue exactly, as the number of vertices lying in a $(k+1)$-face. In general we prove \[ λ_{\max}\big(L_k^{\mathrm{up}}\big)\ \le\ ν_{k-1}+\tfrac1{k+2}\big(n-ν_{k-1}\big), \qquad ν_{k-1}=λ_{\max}\big(L_{k-1}^{\mathrm{up}}\big), \] refining that ceiling. The proofs run through a localization on the cycle space $\ker\partial_k$, which turns the comparison into a statement about the complement. In dimension one the complex is the clique complex of a graph, $L_1$ is its Helmholtzian, the conjecture is a question of Lu, Shi, Stanić, Wang and Wang, and the first case reads $α(G)\le2$. We also characterize the connected graphs of order at least seven with $λ_2(L_1)\le 3$ as the firefly graphs.

A sharp Randić bound for König--Egerváry graphs and a conjecture of Aouchiche, Hansen, and Zheng

Let $α'(G)$ be the matching number of a graph $G$, and let its Randić index be $R(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}(d(u)d(v))^{-1/2}$. In 2006, Aouchiche, Hansen, and Zheng conjectured that the maximum of $R(G)-α'(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs is attained by the complete bipartite graph whose smaller part has $\lfloor\frac{n+4}{7}\rfloor$ vertices; the conjecture has remained open since then. In this paper, we prove that every $n$-vertex König--Egerváry graph, and in particular every bipartite graph, satisfies \[ R(G)\le\sqrt{α'(G)\left(n-α'(G)\right)}, \] and we characterize the graphs attaining equality as the bipartite graphs all of whose components are semiregular with a common degree ratio. The König--Egerváry hypothesis cannot be dropped, but the Berge--Tutte formula reduces the general case to it, and in this way we determine the maximum of $R(G)-α'(G)$ for every $n\ge4$, together with all extremal graphs. The conjecture is therefore false, and it fails for infinitely many orders: the optimal part size is governed by the proportion $\frac{2-\sqrt2}{4}$ rather than by $\frac17$. The two proportions give asymptotic slopes differing by less than $3.7\cdot10^{-5}$, which is why a search over graphs of small order does not distinguish them. The equality statement fails as well, since the extremal graphs are not only the complete bipartite ones.

A reduction principle for non-$r$-partite spectral extremal problems, with a complete multipartite classification

A graph is non-$r$-partite if its chromatic number exceeds $r$. For an edge-color-critical graph $F$ with $χ(F)=r+1$, let $\mathrm{ex}_{r+1,ρ}(n,F)$ be the maximum adjacency spectral radius among non-$r$-partite $F$-free graphs of order $n$, and let $\mathrm{EX}_{r+1,ρ}(n,F)$ and $\mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,F)$ be the families of such graphs attaining, respectively, this maximum spectral radius and the maximum number of edges $\mathrm{ex}_{r+1}(n,F)$. Fang and Lin conjectured that $\mathrm{EX}_{r+1,ρ}(n,F)\subseteq\mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,F)$ for every such $F$ and all large $n$. We prove a reduction principle: if $F$ is \emph{$s$-embeddable} and $\mathrm{ex}_{r+1}(n,F)=|E(T_{n,r})|-\lfloor n/r\rfloor+2(s-1)$, where $T_{n,r}$ is the Turán graph, then the inclusion holds and, moreover, the spectral extremal graph is unique. The reduction replaces the spectral problem by an edge-counting one, and its proof rests on a direct comparison of secular functions together with a second-order residual refinement of the Rayleigh principle. We then determine the spectral extremal graphs for all edge-color-critical complete multipartite forbidden graphs. For $F=K_{1,1,t_3,\ldots,t_{r+1}}$ with $t_3,\ldots,t_{r+1}\ge 2$ we show \[ \mathrm{ex}_{r+1}(n,F)=|E(T_{n,r})|-\Bigl\lfloor\frac nr\Bigr\rfloor+2(t_{\min}-1), \qquad t_{\min}:=\min\{t_3,\ldots,t_{r+1}\}, \] for all sufficiently large $n$, and we identify the unique spectral extremal graph; in particular $\mathrm{EX}_{r+1,ρ}(n,F)\subseteq\mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,F)$. The endpoint $t_3=1$ lies outside the embeddability framework and is treated by a separate argument: for $F=K_{1,1,1,t_4,\ldots,t_{r+1}}$ with $r\ge3$, the unique non-$r$-partite spectral extremal graph is $Y_r(n)$, obtained through a saturation reduction followed by the spectral refinement of Turán's theorem. Spectral radius and parity $[a,b]$-factors in graphs

Let $a$, $b$, and $n$ be three integers such that $1\leq a \leq b < n$, $a \equiv b$ (mod $2$), and $na$ is even. A parity $[a,b]$-factor of $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v \in V(G)$, $a \leq d_H(v) \leq b$ and $d_H(v) \equiv a \equiv b$ (mod $2$). Recently, O [J. Graph Theory 100 (2022) 458-469] proved eigenvalue conditions for a regular graph to have a parity $[a,b]$-factor. In this paper, we prove a sharp lower bound on the spectral radius for an $n$-vertex graph $G$ to have a parity $[a,b]$-factor as follows: If $G$ is an $n$-vertex connected graph with $δ(G)\geq a$ and $ρ(G)\geqρ(G_{n}^{a})$, then $G$ contains a parity $[a,b]$-factor unless $G \cong G_{n}^{a}$, where $2\leq a<b$ and $G_{n}^{a}$ is the graph obtained from $K_{a-1}\vee(K_{n-2a-1}\cup(a+1)K_1)$ by adding a new vertex and adding all possible edges between the added vertex and each vertex in $(a+1)K_1$.

Eigenvalues and factors: a survey

A factor of a graph is a spanning subgraph satisfying some given conditions. An earlier survey of factors can be traced back to the Akiyama and Kano [J. Graph Theory, 1985, 9: 1-42] in which they described the characterization of factors in (bipartite) graphs and digraphs, respectively. Soon after, Kouider and Vestergaard summarized the findings related to connected factors [Graphs Combin., 2005, 21(1): 1-26]. Plummer extended the aforementioned research by providing a comprehensive overview of progress made in the study of graph factors and factorization from 1985 to 2003 [Discrete Math., 2007, 7-8: 791-821]. In this paper, we aim to summarize the relevant results regarding factors from the perspective of eigenvalues.

The average connectivity matrix of a graph

For a graph $G$ and for two distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, let $κ(u,v)$ be the maximum number of vertex-disjoint paths joining $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The average connectivity matrix of an $n$-vertex connected graph $G$, written $A_{\barκ}(G)$, is an $n\times n$ matrix whose $(u,v)$-entry is $κ(u,v)/{n \choose 2}$ and let $ρ(A_{\barκ}(G))$ be the spectral radius of $A_{\barκ}(G)$. In this paper, we investigate some spectral properties of the matrix. In particular, we prove that for any $n$-vertex connected graph $G$, we have $ρ(A_{\barκ}(G)) \le \frac{4α'(G)}n$, which implies a result of Kim and O \cite{KO} stating that for any connected graph $G$, we have $\barκ(G) \le 2 α'(G)$, where $\barκ(G)=\sum_{u,v \in V(G)}\frac{κ(u,v)}{n\choose 2}$ and $α'(G)$ is the maximum size of a matching in $G$; equality holds only when $G$ is a complete graph with an odd number of vertices. Also, for bipartite graphs, we improve the bound, namely $ρ(A_{\barκ}(G)) \le \frac{(n-α'(G))(4α'(G) - 2)}{n(n-1)}$, and equality in the bound holds only when $G$ is a complete balanced bipartite graph.

Eigenvalues and parity factors in graphs

Let $G$ be a graph and let $g, f$ be nonnegative integer-valued functions defined on $V(G)$ such that $g(v) \le f(v)$ and $g(v) \equiv f(v) \pmod{2}$ for all $v \in V(G)$. A $(g,f)$-parity factor of $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v \in V(G)$, $g(v) \le d_H(v) \le f(v)$ and $f(v)\equiv d_H(v) \pmod{2}$. We prove sharp upper bounds for certain eigenvalues in an $h$-edge-connected graph $G$ with given minimum degree to guarantee the existence of a $(g,f)$-parity factor; we provide graphs showing that the bounds are optimal. This result extends the recent one of the second author (2022), extending the one of Gu (2014), Lu (2010), Bollb{á}s, Saito, and Wormald (1985), and Gallai (1950).

$K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs with small spectral radius

For a graph $H$, a graph $G$ is $H$-saturated if $G$ does not contain $H$ as a subgraph but for any $e \in E(\overline{G})$, $G+e$ contains $H$. In this note, we prove a sharp lower bound for the number of paths and walks on length $2$ in $n$-vertex $K_{r+1}$-saturated graphs. We then use this bound to give a lower bound on the spectral radii of such graphs which is asymptotically tight for each fixed $r$ and $n\to\infty$.

An odd $[1,b]$-factor in regular graphs from eigenvalues

An odd $[1,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for each vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is odd and $1\le d_H(v) \le b$. Let $λ_3(G)$ be the third largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. For positive integers $r \ge 3$ and even $n$, Lu, Wu, and Yang [10] proved a lower bound for $λ_3(G)$ in an $n$-vertex $r$-regular graph $G$ to gurantee the existence of an odd $[1,b]$-factor in $G$. In this paper, we improve the bound; it is sharp for every $r$.

Sharp spectral bounds for the edge-connectivity of a regular graph

Let $λ_2(G)$ and $κ'(G)$ be the second largest eigenvalue and the edge-connectivity of a graph $G$, respectively. Let $d$ be a positive integer at least 3. For $t=1$ or 2, Cioaba proved sharp upper bounds for $λ_2(G)$ in a $d$-regular simple graph $G$ to guarantee that $κ'(G) \ge t+1$. In this paper, we settle down for all $t \ge 3$.

Sharp conditions for the existence of an even $[a,b]$-factor in a graph

Let $a$ and $b$ be positive integers. An even $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that for every vertex $v \in V(G)$, $d_H(v)$ is even and $a \le d_H(v) \le b$. Matsuda conjectured that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex 2-edge-connected graph such that $n \ge 2a+b+\frac{a^2-3a}b - 2$, $δ(G) \ge a$, and $σ_2(G) \ge \frac{2an}{a+b}$, then $G$ has an even $[a,b]$-factor. In this paper, we provide counterexamples, which are highly connected. Furthermore, we give sharp sufficient conditions for a graph to have an even $[a,b]$-factor. For even $an$, we conjecture a lower bound for $λ_1(G)$ in an $n$-vertex graph to have an $[a,b]$-factor, where $λ_1(G)$ is the largest eigenvalue of $G$.
