Quantum Phase Transition in Frustrated Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

We study frustrated, two-dimensional, quantum antiferromagnets in the vicinity of a quantum transition from a non-collinear, magnetically-ordered ground state to a quantum disordered phase. The general scaling properties of this transition are described. A detailed study of a particular field-theoretic model of the transition, with bosonic spin-1/2 spinon fields, is presented. Explicit universal scaling forms for a variety of observables are obtained and the results are compared with numerical data on the spin-1/2 triangular antiferromagnet. Universal properties of an alternative field-theory, with confined spinons, are also briefly noted.

Finite Temperature Properties of Quantum Antiferromagnets in a Uniform Magnetic Field in One and Two Dimensions

Consider a $d$-dimensional antiferromagnet with a quantum disordered ground state and a gap to bosonic excitations with non-zero spin. In a finite external magnetic field, this antiferromagnet will undergo a phase transition to a ground state with non-zero magnetization, describable as the condensation of a dilute gas of bosons. The finite temperature properties of the Bose gas in the vicinity of this transition are argued to obey a hypothesis of ZERO SCALE-FACTOR UNIVERSALITY for $d < 2$, with logarithmic violations in $d=2$. Scaling properties of various experimental observables are computed in an expansion in $ε=2-d$, and exactly in $d=1$.

Quantum Phase Transitions and Conserved Charges

The constraints on the scaling properties of conserved charge densities in the vicinity of a zero temperature ($T$), second-order quantum phase transition are studied. We introduce a generalized Wilson ratio, characterizing the non-linear response to an external field, $H$, coupling to any conserved charge, and argue that it is a completely universal function of $H/T$: this is illustrated by computations on model systems. We also note implications for transitions where the order parameter is a conserved charge (as in a $T=0$ ferromagnet-paramagnet transition).

Quantum Phases of the Shraiman-Siggia Model

We examine phases of the Shraiman-Siggia model of lightly-doped, square lattice quantum antiferromagnets in a self-consistent, two-loop, interacting magnon analysis. We find magnetically-ordered and quantum-disordered phases both with and without incommensurate spin correlations. The quantum disordered phases have a pseudo-gap in the spin excitation spectrum. The quantum transition between the magnetically ordered and commensurate quantum-disordered phases is argued to have the dynamic critical exponent $z=1$ and the same leading critical behavior as the disordering transition in the pure $O(3)$ sigma model. The relationship to experiments on the doped cuprates is discussed.

Polylogarithm Identities in a Conformal Field Theory in Three Dimensions

The $N=\infty$ vector $O(N)$ model is a solvable, interacting field theory in three dimensions ($D$). In a recent paper with A. Chubukov and J. Ye~\cite{self}, we have computed a universal number, $\tilde{c}$, characterizing the size dependence of the free energy at the conformally-invariant critical point of this theory. The result~\cite{self} for $\tilde{c}$ can be expressed in terms of polylogarithms. Here, we use non-trivial polylogarithm identities to show that $\tilde{c}/N = 4/5$, a rational number; this result is curiously parallel to recent work on dilogarithm identities in $D=2$ conformal theories. The amplitude of the stress-stress correlator of this theory, $c$ (which is the analog of the central charge), is determined to be $c/N=3/4$, also rational. Unitary conformal theories in $D=2$ always have $c = \tilde{c}$; thus such a result is clearly not valid in $D=3$.

Quantum Antiferromagnets in Two Dimensions

These are lectures presented at the summer course on ``Low Dimensional Quantum Field Theories for Condensed Matter Physicists'', 24 Aug. to 4 Sep. 1992, Trieste, Italy. I review recent work, performed in collaboration primarily with N. Read and Jinwu Ye, on the properties of quantum antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The emphasis is on the properties of the antiferromagnet in states which do not have any long-range magnetic order. The universal spin dynamics in the quantum critical region of number of frustrated and random antiferromagnets is studied; implications for neutron scattering experiments in the lightly-doped cuprates are noted. The nature of the quantum-disordered phase of non-random frustrated antiferromagnets is examined in some detail: the states found have ({\em i\/}) collinear spin correlations, spin-Peierls or valence-bond-solid order, and confined spinons, order and confined spinons or ({\em ii\/}) coplanar spin correlations, no spin-Peierls order and deconfined bosonic spinons.

Universal Magnetic Properties of $La_{2-δ} Sr_δ Cu O_4$ at Intermediate Temperatures

We present the theory of two-dimensional, clean quantum antiferromagnets with a small, positive, zero temperature ($T$) stiffness $ρ_s$, but with the ratio $k_B T / ρ_s $ arbitrary. Universal scaling forms for the uniform susceptibility ($χ_u$), correlation length($ξ$), and NMR relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) are proposed and computed in a $1/N$ expansion and by Monté-Carlo simulations. For large $k_B T/ρ_s$, $χ_u (T)/T$ and $Tξ(T)$ asymptote to universal values, while $1/T_{1}(T)$ is nearly $T$-independent. We find good quantitative agreement with experiments and some numerical studies on $La_{2-δ} Sr_δ Cu O_4$.

Gapless Spin-Fluid Ground State in a Random Quantum Heisenberg Magnet

We examine the spin-$S$ quantum Heisenberg magnet with Gaussian-random, infinite-range exchange interactions. The quantum-disordered phase is accessed by generalizing to $SU(M)$ symmetry and studying the large $M$ limit. For large $S$ the ground state is a spin-glass, while quantum fluctuations produce a spin-fluid state for small $S$. The spin-fluid phase is found to be generically gapless - the average, zero temperature, local dynamic spin-susceptibility obeys $\barχ (ω) \sim \log(1/|ω|) + i (π/2) \mbox{sgn} (ω)$ at low frequencies. This form is identical to the phenomenological `marginal' spectrum proposed by Varma {\em et. al.\/} for the doped cuprates.

A Solvable Spin-Glass of Quantum Rotors

We examine a model of $M$-component quantum rotors coupled by Gaussian-distributed random, infinite-range exchange interactions. A complete solution is obtained at $M=\infty$ in the spin-glass and quantum-disordered phases. The quantum phase transition separating them is found to possess logarithmic violations of scaling, with no further modifications to the leading critical behavior at any order in $1/M$; this suggests that the critical properties of the transverse-field Ising model (believed to be identical to the $M\rightarrow 1$ limit) are the same as those of the $M=\infty$ quantum rotors.

Universal quantum critical dynamics of two-dimensional antiferromagnets

The universal dynamic and static properties of two dimensional antiferromagnets in the vicinity of a zero-temperature phase transition from long-range magnetic order to a quantum disordered phase are studied. Random antiferromagnets with both Néel and spin-glass long-range magnetic order are considered. Explicit quantum-critical dynamic scaling functions are computed in a 1/N expansion to two-loops for certain non-random, frustrated square lattice antiferromagnets. Implications for neutron scattering experiments on the doped cuprates are noted.
