Quantum phase transitions in antiferromagnets and superfluids

We present a general introduction to the non-zero temperature dynamic and transport properties of low-dimensional systems near a quantum phase transition. Basic results are reviewed in the context of experiments on the spin-ladder compounds, insulating two-dimensional antiferromagnets, and double-layer quantum Hall systems. Recent large N computations on an extended t-J model (cond-mat/9906104) motivate a global scenario of the quantum phases and transitions in the high temperature superconductors, and connections are made to numerous experiments.

Comment on "Spin Transport properties of the quantum one-dimensional non-linear sigma model"

In a recent preprint (cond-mat/9905415), Fujimoto has used the Bethe ansatz to compute the finite temperature, zero frequency Drude weight of spin transport in the quantum O(3) non-linear sigma model in a magnetic field $H \neq 0$. We show here that, contrary to his claims, the results are in accord with earlier semiclassical results (Sachdev and Damle, cond-mat/9610115). We also comment on his 1/N expansion, and show that it does not properly describe the long-time correlations.

Universal relaxational dynamics near two-dimensional quantum-critical points

We describe the nonzero temperature (T), low frequency (ω) dynamics of the order parameter near quantum critical points in two spatial dimensions (d), with a special focus on the regime \hbarω<< k_B T. For the case of a `relativistic', O(n)-symmetric, bosonic quantum field theory we show that, for small ε=3-d, the dynamics is described by an effective classical model of waves with a quartic interaction. We provide analytical and numerical analyses of the classical wave model directly in d=2. We describe the crossover from the finite frequency, "amplitude fluctuation", gapped quasiparticle mode in the quantum paramagnet (or Mott insulator), to the zero frequency "phase" (n >= 2) or "domain wall" (n=1) relaxation mode near the ordered state. For static properties, we show how a surprising, duality-like transformation allows an exact treatment of the strong-coupling limit for all n. For n=2, we compute the universal T dependence of the superfluid density below the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature, and discuss implications for the high temperature superconductors. For n=3, our computations of the dynamic structure factor relate to neutron scattering experiments on La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and to light scattering experiments on double layer quantum Hall systems. We expect that closely related effective classical wave models will apply also to other quantum critical points in d=2.

Intermediate temperature dynamics of one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We present a general theory for the intermediate temperature (T) properties of Heisenberg antiferromagnets of spin-S ions on p-leg ladders, valid for 2Sp even or odd. Following an earlier proposal for 2Sp even (Damle and Sachdev, cond-mat/9711014), we argue that an integrable, classical, continuum model of a fixed-length, 3-vector applies over an intermediate temperature range; this range becomes very wide for moderate and large values of 2Sp. The coupling constants of the effective model are known exactly in terms of the energy gap above the ground state (for 2Sp even) or a crossover scale (for 2Sp odd). Analytic and numeric results for dynamic and transport properties are obtained, including some exact results for the spin-wave damping. Numerous quantitative predictions for neutron scattering and NMR experiments are made. A general discussion on the nature of T>0 transport in integrable systems is also presented: an exact solution of a toy model proves that diffusion can exist in integrable systems, provided proper care is taken in approaching the thermodynamic limit.

Universal critical temperature for Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in bilayer quantum magnets

Recent experiments show that double layer quantum Hall systems may have a ground state with canted antiferromagnetic order. In the experimentally accessible vicinity of a quantum critical point, the order vanishes at a temperature T_{KT} = κH, where H is the magnetic field and κis a universal number determined by the interactions and Berry phases of the thermal excitations. We present quantum Monte Carlo simulations on a model spin system which support the universality of κand determine its numerical value. This allows experimental tests of an intrinsically quantum-mechanical universal quantity, which is not also a property of a higher dimensional classical critical point.

Coulomb interactions at quantum Hall critical points of systems in a periodic potential

We study the consequences of long-range Coulomb interactions at the critical points between integer/fractional quantum Hall states and an insulator. We use low energy theories for such transitions in anyon gases in the presence of an external periodic potential. We find that Coulomb interactions are marginally irrelevant for the integer quantum Hall case. For the fractional case, depending upon the anyon statistics parameter, we find behavior similar to the integer case, or flow to a novel line of fixed points with exponents $z=1$, $ν> 1$ stable against weak disorder in the position of the critical point, or run-away flow to strong coupling.

Canted antiferromagnetic and spin singlet quantum Hall states in double-layer systems

We present details of earlier studies (Zheng et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 78, 310 (1997) and Das Sarma et al, ibid 79, 917 (1997)) and additional new results on double-layer quantum Hall systems at a total filling ν= 2 ν_1, where a single layer at filling ν_1 forms a ferromagnetic, fully spin-polarized, gapped incompressible quantum Hall state. For the case ν_1 = 1, a detailed Hartree-Fock analysis is carried out on a realistic, microscopic Hamiltonian. Apart from the state continuously connected to the ground state of two well separated layers, we find two double-layer quantum Hall phases: one with a finite interlayer antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the plane orthogonal to the applied field (the `canted' state), and the other a spin singlet. The quantum transitions between the various quantum Hall states are continuous, and are signaled by the softening of collective intersubband spin density excitations. For the case of general ν_1, closely related results are obtained by a semi-phenomenological continuum quantum field theory description of the low-lying spin excitations using a non-linear sigma model. Because of its broken symmetry, the canted phase supports a linearly dispersing Goldstone mode and has a finite temperature Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We present results on the form of the phase diagram, the magnitude of the canted order parameter, the collective excitation dispersions, the specific heat, the form of the dynamic light scattering spectrum at finite temperature, and the Kosterlitz-Thouless critical temperature. Our findings are consistent with recent experimental results.

Spin dynamics and transport in gapped one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets at nonzero temperatures

We present the theory of nonzero temperature ($T$) spin dynamics and transport in one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets with an energy gap $Δ$. For $T << Δ$, we develop a semiclassical picture of thermally excited particles. Multiple inelastic collisions between the particles are crucial, and are described by a two-particle S-matrix which has a super-universal form at low momenta. This is established by computations on the O(3) $σ$-model, and strong and weak coupling expansions (the latter using a Majorana fermion representation) for the two-leg S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder. As an aside, we note that the strong-coupling calculation reveals a S=1, two particle bound state which leads to the presence of a second peak in the T=0 inelastic neutron scattering (INS) cross-section for a range of values of momentum transfer. We obtain exact, or numerically exact, universal expressions for the thermal broadening of the quasi-particle peak in the INS cross-section, for the magnetization transport, and for the field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate $1/T_1$ of the effective semiclassical model: these are expected to be asymptotically exact for the quantum antiferromagnets. The results for $1/T_1$ are compared with the experimental findings of Takigawa et al and the agreement is quite good. In the regime $Δ< T < (a typical microscopic exchange)$ we argue that a complementary description in terms of semiclassical waves applies, and give some exact results for the thermodynamics and dynamics.

Nonzero temperature transport near fractional quantum Hall critical points

In an earlier work, Damle and the author (Phys. Rev. B in press; cond-mat/9705206) demonstrated the central role played by incoherent, inelastic processes in transport near two-dimensional quantum critical points. This paper extends these results to the case of a quantum transition in an anyon gas between a fractional quantized Hall state and an insulator, induced by varying the strength of an external periodic potential. We use the quantum field theory for this transition introduced by Chen, Fisher and Wu (Phys. Rev. B 48, 13749 (1993)). The longitudinal and Hall conductivities at the critical point are both $e^2/ h$ times non-trivial, fully universal functions of $\hbar ω/ k_B T$ ($ω$ is the measuring frequency). These functions are computed using a combination of perturbation theory on the Kubo formula, and the solution of a quantum Boltzmann equation for the anyonic quasiparticles and quasiholes. The results include the values of the d.c. conductivities ($\hbar ω/k_B T \to 0$); earlier work had been restricted strictly to T=0, and had therefore computed only the high frequency a.c. conductivities with $\hbar ω/ k_B T \to \infty$.

Conductance and its universal fluctuations in the directed network model at the crossover to the quasi-one-dimensional regime

The directed network model describing chiral edge states on the surface of a cylindrical 3D quantum Hall system is known to map to a one-dimensional quantum ferromagnetic spin chain. Using the spin wave expansion for this chain, we determine the universal functions for the crossovers between the 2D chiral metallic and 1D metallic regimes in the mean and variance of the conductance along the cylinder, to first nontrivial order.

Non-zero temperature transport near quantum critical points

We describe the nature of charge transport at non-zero temperatures ($T$) above the two-dimensional ($d$) superfluid-insulator quantum critical point. We argue that the transport is characterized by inelastic collisions among thermally excited carriers at a rate of order $k_B T/\hbar$. This implies that the transport at frequencies $ω\ll k_B T/\hbar$ is in the hydrodynamic, collision-dominated (or `incoherent') regime, while $ω\gg k_B T/\hbar$ is the collisionless (or `phase-coherent') regime. The conductivity is argued to be $e^2 / h$ times a non-trivial universal scaling function of $\hbar ω/ k_B T$, and not independent of $\hbar ω/k_B T$, as has been previously claimed, or implicitly assumed. The experimentally measured d.c. conductivity is the hydrodynamic $\hbar ω/k_B T \to 0$ limit of this function, and is a universal number times $e^2 / h$, even though the transport is incoherent. Previous work determined the conductivity by incorrectly assuming it was also equal to the collisionless $\hbar ω/k_B T \to \infty$ limit of the scaling function, which actually describes phase-coherent transport with a conductivity given by a different universal number times $e^2 / h$. We provide the first computation of the universal d.c. conductivity in a disorder-free boson model, along with explicit crossover functions, using a quantum Boltzmann equation and an expansion in $ε=3-d$. The case of spin transport near quantum critical points in antiferromagnets is also discussed. Similar ideas should apply to the transitions in quantum Hall systems and to metal-insulator transitions. We suggest experimental tests of our picture and speculate on a new route to self-duality at two-dimensional quantum critical points.

Dynamics and transport near quantum-critical points

The physics of non-zero temperature dynamics and transport near quantum-critical points is discussed by a detailed study of the O(N)-symmetric, relativistic, quantum field theory of a N-component scalar field in $d$ spatial dimensions. A great deal of insight is gained from a simple, exact solution of the long-time dynamics for the N=1 d=1 case: this model describes the critical point of the Ising chain in a transverse field, and the dynamics in all the distinct, limiting, physical regions of its finite temperature phase diagram is obtained. The N=3, d=1 model describes insulating, gapped, spin chain compounds: the exact, low temperature value of the spin diffusivity is computed, and compared with NMR experiments. The N=3, d=2,3 models describe Heisenberg antiferromagnets with collinear Néel correlations, and experimental realizations of quantum-critical behavior in these systems are discussed. Finally, the N=2, d=2 model describes the superfluid-insulator transition in lattice boson systems: the frequency and temperature dependence of the the conductivity at the quantum-critical coupling is described and implications for experiments in two-dimensional thin films and inversion layers are noted.

Magnetic properties of strongly disordered electronic systems

We present a unified, global perspective on the magnetic properties of strongly disordered electronic systems, with special emphasis on the case where the ground state is metallic. We review the arguments for the instability of the disordered Fermi liquid state towards the formation of local magnetic moments, and argue that their singular low temperature thermodynamics are the ``quantum Griffiths'' precursors of the quantum phase transition to a metallic spin glass; the local moment formation is therefore not directly related to the metal-insulator transition. We also review the the mean-field theory of the disordered Fermi liquid to metallic spin glass transition and describe the separate regime of ``non-Fermi liquid'' behavior at higher temperatures near the quantum critical point. The relationship to experimental results on doped semiconductors and heavy-fermion compounds is noted.

Far from equilibrium dynamics of the Bose gas

We study the approach to equilibrium of a Bose gas to a superfluid state. We point out that dynamic scaling, characteristic of far from equilibrium phase-ordering systems, should hold. We stress the importance of a non-dissipative Josephson precession term in driving the system to a new universality class. A model of coarsening in d=2, involving a quench between two temperatures below the equilibrium superfluid transition temperature (T_c), is exactly solved and demonstrates the relevance of the Josephson term. Numerical results on quenches from above T_c in d=2,3 provide evidence for the scaling picture postulated.

Low temperature relaxational dynamics of the Ising chain in a transverse field

We present asymptotically exact results for the real time order parameter correlations of a class of d=1 Ising models in a transverse field at low temperatures (T) on both sides of the quantum critical point. The correlations are a product of a T-independent factor determined by quantum effects, and a T-dependent relaxation function which comes from a classical theory. We confirm our predictions by a no-free-parameter comparison with numerical studies on the nearest neighbor spin-1/2 model.

Double-layer quantum Hall antiferromagnetism at filling fraction nu=2/(odd integer)

A low energy action for double-layer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions $ν= 2/m$ ($m$ an odd integer) is introduced. Interlayer antiferromagnetic exchange induces a phase with canted spin order, and also a spin-singlet phase. Universal properties of zero and finite temperature transitions are obtained. We compute the critical temperature at which the canted order vanishes in a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Implications for recent light scattering experiments at $ν= 2$ are noted.

Scaling and Crossover Functions for the Conductance in the Directed Network Model of Edge States

We consider the directed network (DN) of edge states on the surface of a cylinder of length L and circumference C. By mapping it to a ferromagnetic superspin chain, and using a scaling analysis, we show its equivalence to a one-dimensional supersymmetric nonlinear sigma model in the scaling limit, for any value of the ratio L/C, except for short systems where L is less than of order C^{1/2}. For the sigma model, the universal crossover functions for the conductance and its variance have been determined previously. We also show that the DN model can be mapped directly onto the random matrix (Fokker-Planck) approach to disordered quasi-one-dimensional wires, which implies that the entire distribution of the conductance is the same as in the latter system, for any value of L/C in the same scaling limit. The results of Chalker and Dohmen are explained quantitatively.

Low temperature spin diffusion in the one-dimensional quantum $O(3)$ nonlinear $σ$-model

An effective, low temperature, classical model for spin transport in the one-dimensional, gapped, quantum $O(3)$ non-linear $σ$-model is developed. Its correlators are obtained by a mapping to a model solved earlier by Jepsen. We obtain universal functions for the ballistic-to-diffusive crossover and the value of the spin diffusion constant, and these are claimed to be exact at low temperatures. Implications for experiments on one-dimensional insulators with a spin gap are noted.
