Systematic investigation of channel coupling effects on elastic, inelastic and neutron transfer channels in $^6$Li+$^{159}$Tb

Elastic scattering angular distribution for weakly bound nucleus $^{6}$Li on the deformed rare earth $^{159}$Tb target nucleus has been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The elastic scattering cross sections for this reaction consist of inelastic contributions from low lying excited states of $^{159}$Tb. The pure elastic cross-sections have been extracted from the admixture of elastic and inelastic data. The optical model potential parameters for the system have been obtained from the extracted pure elastic scattering cross sections. Coupled channel calculations have been performed with this set of potential parameters, to compare the theoretical and experimental inelastic scattering cross sections. The work has been extended to obtain the spectroscopic factor for $^{158}$Tb+n configuration from the experimental 1n-pickup data.

Collective enhancement in nuclear level density of $^{72}$Ga and its effect on $^{71}$Ga(n, $\gamma$)$^{72}$Ga capture cross-section

The $\gamma$-gated proton spectra measured in the reactions $^{64}$Ni($^{9}$Be, p2n)$^{70}$Ga and $^{64}$Ni($^{9}$Be, pn)$^{71}$Ga, have been utilized to obtain the nuclear level density (NLD) of $^{71}$Ga and $^{72}$Ga nuclei by using the statistical model (SM) calculations. It is seen that the $\gamma$-gated proton spectrum are reasonably explained by using the large value of the inverse level density parameter ($k$ = 11.2 MeV) in the NLD prescription of the Fermi gas (FG) model. The large value of $k$ is indicative of the rotational enhancement, which is consistent with the earlier results in other mass regions. Furthermore, a rotational enhancement factor has been included in the NLD and used in the SM calculation keeping the systematic value of $k$=8.6 MeV and it explains the $\gamma$-gated proton spectrum nicely. The result clearly indicates the presence of collective enhancement in NLD. Subsequently, the NLD with collective enhancement has been utilized in the TALYS calculation, for the first time, to calculate the $^{71}$Ga(n, $\gamma$)$^{72}$Ga capture cross-section. It is observed that, while the FG model without the collective enhancement in the NLD for $^{72}$Ga under predicts the capture data, with the rotational enhancement correction the FG model over predicts the data by similar amount at higher energies. However, in the energy range of 0.01 MeV to 0.1 MeV, the FG model corrected for rotational enhancement describes the data quite well. Thus, the present work indicates that collective enhancement, whenever required, should be taken into account fro proper description of low energy capture cross section data.

R-matrix analysis of elastic scattering, phase shift and radiative capture reaction cross sections in the $\alpha + \alpha$ system

The unstable nucleus $^8$Be, with its two $\alpha$-cluster configuration, is the doorway to the formation of heavier $\alpha$-cluster nuclei. Most importantly, its the precursor of the production of $^{12}$C through the Hoyle state, a resonance state of three $\alpha$ clusters, in the helium burning phase of a massive star. The nucleus exhibits a ground state band of rotational states established through $\alpha-\alpha$ scattering experiments. A subsequent precision particle-$\gamma$ coincidence measurement of the electromagnetic transition between the 4$^+\rightarrow$ 2$^+$ excited states also corroborated the evidence for a highly deformed dumb-bell shaped structure of $^8$Be. A simultaneous phenomenological R-matrix analysis of the measured capture reaction cross sections along with the elastic excitation function and phase shift data has been performed. The resulting reduced transition strength of 21.96$\pm$3.86 $e^2 fm^4$ compares well with the estimated experimental value of 21.0$\pm$2.3 e$^2$ fm$^4$. The R-matrix yield of the B($E2$) value is closer to the prediction of cluster model but about 19$\%$ less than the {\it ab initio} result.

The characterization of a hybrid telescope detector for low energy alpha detection

Characterization of a hybrid ${\it telescope}$ with gas transmission detector ($\Delta$E) and a solid-state stop detector (E) has been fabricated for detection of low energy $\alpha$ particles between 5 to 1 MeV. The detector is developed for utilization in the study of alpha excitation function in (p.$\alpha$) reaction. The gas ionization chamber, operated in axial field mode, measures the differential energy loss ($\Delta$E), while the residual energies are measured by silicon detector. Particle identification is realized by implementing the $\Delta$E-E technique. The optimum sensitivity of the detector as a telescope has been studied down to the lowest energy value of 0.89 MeV $\alpha$-particles with a suitable combination of electric field and pressure or E/p value in the ionization region.

Study evolution of fragment energy spectrum in compound and elemental absorber with thickness via effective charge correction

The energy loss behaviour of fission fragments (FF) from $^{252}$Cf(sf) in thin Mylar ($H_8 C_{10} O_4$) and Aluminium absorber foils have been revisited. The aim is to investigate the observed change in the well known asymmetric energy of spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf as the fragments pass through increasingly thick absorber foils. Two different types of absorbers have been used: one elemental and the other an organic compound. The stopping powers have been determined as a function of energy for three fragment mass groups with average masses with $ $ = 106.5, 141.8, 125.8 corresponding to light, heavy and symmetric fragment of $^{252}$Cf. Using the effective charge (Z$_{eff}$) in the stopping power relation in the classical Bohr theory best describes the stopping power data. Spectrum shape parameters, subsequently have been extracted from the energy spectra of fission fragments for different foil thickness. The effective charge (Z$_{eff}$) correction term determined from the stopping power data is then used in the simulation for the absorber thickness dependence of the shape parameters of the energy spectrum. The present simulation results are compared with the TRIM prediction. The trends of the absorber thickness dependence of the spectrum shape parameters, for both Mylar and Aluminium are well reproduced with the present simulation.

Large back-angle quasielastic scattering for $^{7}$Li+$^{159}$Tb

Quasielastic scattering excitation function at large backward angle has been measured for the weakly bound system, $^{7}$Li+$^{159}$Tb at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The corresponding quasielastic barrier distribution has been derived from the excitation function, both including and excluding the $\alpha$-particles produced in the reaction. The centroid of the barrier distribution obtained after inclusion of $\alpha$-particles was found to be shifted higher in energy, compared to the distribution excluding the $\alpha $-particles. The quasielastic data, excluding the $\alpha$-particles, have been analyzed in the framework of continuum discretized coupled channel calculations. The quasielastic barrier distribution for $^{7}$Li+$^{159}$Tb, has also been compared with the fusion barrier distribution for the system.

Nuclear level density of $^{69}$Zn from gamma gated particle spectrum and its implication on $^{68}$Zn(n, $\gamma$)$^{69}$Zn capture cross-section

Evaporated $\alpha$-spectra have been measured in coincidence with low energy discrete $\gamma$-rays from residual nucleus $^{68}$Zn populated in the reaction $^{64}$Ni($^9$Be,$\alpha$n)$^{68}$Zn at $E(^9$Be) = 30 MeV producing $^{73}$Ge compound nucleus. Low energy $\gamma$-gated $\alpha$-particle spectra, for the first time, have been used to extract the nuclear level density (NLD) for the intermediate $^{69}$Zn nucleus in the excitation energy range of E $\approx$ 5-20 MeV. The slope of NLD as a function of excitation energy for $^{69}$Zn matches nicely with the slope determined from RIPL estimates for NLD at low energies and the NLD from neutron resonance data. Extracted inverse NLD parameter (k = A/$\widetilde{a}$) has been used to determine the nuclear level density parameter value $a$ at neutron separation energy $S_n$ for $^{69}$Zn. Total cross-section of $^{68}$Zn(n,$\gamma$) capture reaction as a function of neutron energy is then estimated employing the derived $a(S_n)$ in the reaction code TALYS. It is found that the estimated neutron capture cross-section agrees well with the available experimental data without any normalization. The present result indicates that experimentally derived nuclear level density parameter can constrain the statistical model description of astrophysical capture cross-section and optimize the uncertainties associated with the astrophysical reaction rate

Asymptotic normalization coefficients from transfer reaction and R-martix analysis of direct capture in $^{22}$Ne(p,$\gamma$)$^{23}$Na reaction

The $^{22}$Ne(p,$\gamma$)$^{23}$Na reaction in NeNa cycle plays an important role in the production of only stable sodium isotope $^{23}$Na. This nucleus is processed by the NeNa cycle during hot bottom burning (HBB) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stage of low metallicity intermediate mass stats (4 M$_O$ $\leq$ M $\leq$ 6 M$_O$). Recent measurements have addressed the uncertainty in the thermonuclear reaction rate of this reaction at relevant astrophysical energies through the identification of low lying resonances at E$_p$ = 71,105, 156.2, 189.5 and 259.7 keV. In addition, precise measurements of low energy behaviour of the non-resonant capture has also been performed and the contribution of the sub-threshold resonance at 8664 keV excitation in $^{23}$Na has been established. Here, in this article, we have presented a systematic R-matrix analysis of direct capture to the bound states and the decay of the sub-threshold resonance at 8664 keV to the ground state of $^{23}$Na. A finite range distorted wave Born approximation (FRDWBA) calculation has been performed for $^{22}$Ne($^3$He,d)$^{23}$Na transfer reaction data to extract the asymptotic normalization coeeficients (ANC-s) required to estimate the non-resonant capture cross sections or astrophysical S-factor values in R-matrix analysis. Simultaneous R-matrix analysis constrained with ANC-s from transfer calculation reproduced the astrophysical S-factor data over a wide energy window. The S$_{tot}^{DC}$(0) = 48.8$\pm$9.5 keV.b compares well with the result of Ferraro, {\it et al.} and has a lower uncertainty. The resultant thermonuclear reaction is slightly larger in 0.1 GK $\le$ T $\le$ 0.2 GK temperature range but otherwise in agreeent with Ferraro, {\it et al.}.

Study of $^{26}$Mg through 1p pick up reaction $^{27}$Al(d,$^{3}$He)

The even-even nucleus $^{26}$Mg has been studied through the reaction $^{27}$Al(d,$^{3}$He) at 25 MeV beam energy. The spectroscopic factors have been extracted upto 7.50 MeV excitation energy using local, zero range distorted wave Born approximation. The comparison of the spectroscopic factors have been done with previously reported values using the same reaction probe. The extracted spectroscopic factors for different excited states were found to be in good agreement with the previously reported values for the same. The present results were also compared with the predictions from shell model as well as rotational model. The analog states of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Mg were found to be in good agreement.

Importance of $1n$-stripping process in the $^{6}$Li+$^{159}$Tb reaction

The inclusive cross sections of the $\alpha$-particles produced in the reaction $^{6}$Li+$^{159}$Tb have been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The measured cross sections are found to be orders of magnitude larger than the calculated cross sections of $^{6}$Li breaking into $\alpha$ and $d$ fragments, thus indicating contributions from other processes. The experimental cross sections of $1n$-stripping and $1n$-pickup processes have been determined from an entirely different measurement, reported earlier. Apart from incomplete fusion and/ $d$-transfer processes, the $1n$-stripping process is found to be a significant contributor to the inclusive $\alpha$-particle cross sections in this reaction.

Fusion of $^{6}$Li with $^{159}$Tb} at near barrier energies

Complete and incomplete fusion cross sections for $^{6}$Li+$^{159}$Tb have been measured at energies around the Coulomb barrier by the $\gamma$-ray method. The measurements show that the complete fusion cross sections at above-barrier energies are suppressed by $\sim$34% compared to the coupled channels calculations. A comparison of the complete fusion cross sections at above-barrier energies with the existing data of $^{11,10}$B+$^{159}$Tb and $^{7}$Li+$^{159}$Tb shows that the extent of suppression is correlated with the $\alpha$-separation energies of the projectiles. It has been argued that the Dy isotopes produced in the reaction $^{6}$Li+$^{159}$Tb, at below-barrier energies are primarily due to the $d$-transfer to unbound states of $^{159}$Tb, while both transfer and incomplete fusion processes contribute at above-barrier energies.

Sub- and above barrier fusion of loosely bound $^6$Li with $^{28}$Si

Fusion excitation functions are measured for the system $^6$Li+$^{28}$Si using the characteristic $\gamma$-ray method, encompassing both the sub-barrier and above barrier regions, viz., $E_{lab}$= 7-24 MeV. Two separate experiments were performed, one for the above barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 11-24 MeV) and another for the below barrier region ($E_{lab}$= 7-10 MeV). The results were compared with our previously measured fusion cross section for the $^7$Li+$^{28}$Si system. We observed enhancement of fusion cross section at sub-barrier regions for both $^6$Li and $^7$Li, but yield was substantially larger for $^6$Li. However, for well above barrier regions, similar type of suppression was identified for both the systems.

Sub-barrier fusion excitation for the system $^7$Li+$^{28}$Si

The sub-barrier fusion excitation functions are measured for the first time for the system $^7$Li +$^{28}$Si by the characteristic $γ$-ray method in the energy range $E_{lab}$= 7-11.5 MeV. The results show an enhancement, below the barrier, by about a factor of two when compared with the one-dimensional barrier penetration (1D BPM) model. Introduction of coupling with the rotational 2$^{+}$ state (1.779MeV) of the target improves the fit somewhat, but still an enhancement of about 25-40% remains.

Spectroscopic factors for alpha decay in the $N_pN_n$ scheme

Lifetime values for alpha decay in even-even nuclei with $Z=84-98$ and $N=128-152$ have been calculated in the superasymmetric fission model. The interaction between the alpha particle and the daughter nucleus has been formed in the double folding approach using a density dependent NN interaction. The densities have been obtained using the Relativistic Mean Field formalism. The spectroscopic factors for the decays have been deduced and are shown to vary smoothly as a function of effective numbers of valence nucleons, $N_p$ and $N_n$ chosen with a suitable core. The implication of such a smooth behaviour has been discussed.

The study of threshold behaviour of effective potential for $^{6}$Li+$^{58,64}$Ni systems

The elastic scattering for $^6$Li+$^{64}$Ni system was measured in the bombarding energy range of 13 MeV $\leq$ $E_{lab}$ $\leq$ 26 MeV. A phenomenological optical model analysis was performed and the behaviour of the surface strengths of the potential components with decreasing energy was extracted. A further analysis of the measured angular distributions, along with the existing data for $^6$Li+$^{58}$Ni, was performed with two different model potentials - one with the folded potential normalized with a complex factor (OMP1) and the other with a {\it hybrid} potential composed of a renormalized folded real and a phenomenological imaginary (OMP2) potential components - were used in the calculation. All the model potentials predict similar energy dependent behaviour for the interaction potential around the barrier. The observed energy dependence of the strengths of the real and imaginary potentials corroborate with the dispersion relation prediction for both the $^6$Li+$^{64}$Ni and $^6$Li+$^{58}$Ni systems. Though the evidence of breakup is distinct in the energy variation of the potential strengths, close to the barrier the variation is more in the line of conventional threshold anomaly. Also the threshold behaviour of the interaction potential does not indicate any distinct isotopic dependence.

Influence of projectile - breakup threshold on complete fusion

Complete fusion excitations for 11,10B+159Tb have been measured at energies around the respective Coulomb barriers, and the existing complete fusion measurements for 7Li+159Tb have been extended to higher energies. The measurements show significant reduction of complete fusion cross sections at above-barrier energies for both the reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb, when compared to those for 11B+159Tb. The comparison shows that the extent of suppression of complete fusion cross sections is correlated with the -separation energies of the projectiles. Also, the two reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb were found to produce incomplete fusion products at energies near the respective Coulomb barriers, with the - particle emitting channel being the favoured incomplete fusion process in both the cases.

Relativistic mean field study of neutron rich even-even C and Be isotopes

Ground state properties of neutron rich even-even Be and C nuclei have been investigated using Relativistic Mean Field approach in co-ordinate space. The positions of the neutron drip line are correctly predicted for both the elements. The nucleus $^{14}$Be shows a two neutron halo but, contrary to expectation, $^{22}$C does not exhibit any halo structure. In carbon nuclei, N=16 comes out as a new magic number. The single particle level ordering observed in stable nuclei is found to be modified in neutron rich Be isotopes. Elastic partial scattering cross sections for proton scattering in inverse kinematics have been calculated using the theoretically obtained densities for some of the nuclei and compared with available experimental data. The total cross cross sections for elastic scattering have also been calculated for all the nuclei studied showing a large increase for the halo nucleus $^{14}$Be. The nuclei have also been investigated for deformation. The nuclei $^{10}$Be and $^{16,18,20}$C are observed to be deformed in their ground state.
