The Minimal Degree of Salem Numbers with Negative Trace

We show that the minimal degree of a Salem number with prescribed negative trace is bounded below by $T^2/\log T$ and above by $T^2\log T$, up to explicit constants and lower-order terms, where $T$ is the absolute value of the trace. This improves the previous doubly exponential upper bound of McKee and Smyth. Building on their construction, we also prove that for every prescribed negative trace there exists a constant $d_0$ such that Salem numbers of that trace exist in every even degree exceeding $d_0$.

Notes on (-2)-form symmetries

We study $(-2)$-form symmetries of a $d$-dimensional quantum field theory, via a $(-1)$-form symmetry of its $(d+1)$-dimensional Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT), realized by a non-genuine codimension-one defect in the SymTFT bulk attached to a spacetime-filling topological operator. Unlike a $(-1)$-form symmetry of a $d$-dimensional theory, which merely shifts a parameter of the absolute theory, a $(-2)$-form symmetry modifies the SymTFT action, and thereby relates theories whose ordinary global symmetries differ by anomaly data or by the associator data of a non-invertible symmetry. We illustrate the construction in two-dimensional toy models, three-dimensional ABJM-type theories, four-dimensional generalized Yang--Mills theory, and in a fusion-categorical example relating the non-invertible symmetries $\operatorname{Rep}(D_4)$ and $\operatorname{Rep}(Q_8)$. We then develop a club-sandwich realization, in which a quarter-gauging operation interfaces between IR phases of distinct RG flows of a common UV theory, and an alternative realization via nested discrete gauging. Finally, we present a holographic, top-down realization in which the type IIA Romans mass plays the role of a $(-2)$-form background for a three-dimensional Chern--Simons-matter theory, with shifts of the Romans mass realizing shifts of the boundary anomaly coefficients. We also discuss related constructions for coupled bulk--boundary systems.

SymTFT actions, Condensable algebras and Categorical anomaly resolutions

We investigate symmetry topological field theories (SymTFTs) of non-abelian and non-invertible symmetries and the different Lagrangian algebras associated with a given Drinfeld center. For several examples we analyze the condensable algebras of the Drinfeld center to identify the intrinsically gapless symmetry protected topological (igSPT) phases. In previous work, the relation between igSPT phases and resolving anomalies by embedding an anomalous symmetry inside a larger fusion category was demonstrated. Here we present more examples of this mechanism that involve both group-like and categorical symmetries.

(-1)-Form Symmetries and Anomaly Shifting from SymTFT

We investigate (-1)-form symmetries using the framework of symmetry topological field theories. Previous studies of (-1)-form symmetries have primarily focused on SymTFTs with topological point operators. Here we examine SymTFTs devoid of point operators, constructed to realize zero-form symmetries of some physical theory. In this context we identify codimension-one defects within the bulk of SymTFT constructed via higher gauging which can be interpreted as the generators of the (-1)-form symmetry of the absolute theory. In addition, we present examples where (-1)-form symmetries exhibit the novel ability to shift the 't Hooft anomalies of the theory.

Random walks through the areal Mahler measure: steps in the complex plane

We study the areal Mahler measure of the two-variable, $k$-parameter family $x+y+k$ and prove explicit formulas that demonstrate its relation to the standard Mahler measure of these polynomials. The proofs involve interpreting the areal Mahler measure as a random walk in the complex plane and utilizing the areal analogue of the Zeta Mahler function to arrive at the result. Using similar techniques, we also present formulas for a three-variable family $(x+1)(y+1)+kz$ in terms of the standard Mahler measure, along with terms that involve certain hypergeometric functions. For both families we show that its areal Mahler measure is, up to elementary functions, a linear combination of the normal Mahler measure and the volume of the Deninger cycle of the corresponding family.

Decomposition and (Non-Invertible) (-1)-Form Symmetries from the Symmetry Topological Field Theory

We investigate the interplay between (-1)-form symmetries and their quantum-dual (d-1)-form counterparts within the framework of Symmetry Topological Field Theories (SymTFTs). In this framework the phenomenon of decomposition -- a d-dimensional quantum field theory with (d-1)-form symmetry being the disjoint union of other theories (or ''universes'') -- arises naturally from manipulations of topological boundary conditions of the SymTFT. We corroborate our findings with various examples, including a generalization of ''instanton-restricted'' 4d Yang-Mills theories with no sum over instanton sectors. Furthermore, we construct a 3d SymTFT with a non-invertible (-1)-form symmetry. The absolute 2d quantum field theory includes a 0-form global symmetry that depends on a parameter whose value gets shifted by the action of the (-1)-form symmetry, and we show that the non-invertibility of the latter is needed to encode this modification of the 0-form symmetry.

Generalized Mahler measures of Laurent polynomials

Following the work of Lal\'in and Mittal on the Mahler measure over arbitrary tori, we investigate the definition of the generalized Mahler measure for all Laurent polynomials in two variables when they do not vanish on the integration torus. We establish certain relations between the standard Mahler measure and the generalized Mahler measure of such polynomials. Later we focus our investigation on a tempered family of polynomials originally studied by Boyd, namely $Q_{r}(x, y) = x + \frac{1}{x} + y + \frac{1}{y} + r$ with $r \in \mathbb{C},$ and apply our results to this family. For the $r = 4$ case, we explicitly calculate the generalized Mahler measure of $Q_4$ over any arbitrary torus in terms of special values of the Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm. Finally, we extend our results to the several variable setting.

Evaluations of the areal Mahler measure of multivariable polynomials

We exhibit some nontrivial evaluations of the areal Mahler measure of multivariable polynomials, defined by Pritsker [Pri08] by considering the integral over the product of unit disks instead of the unit torus as in the standard case. As in the case of the classical Mahler measure, we find examples yielding special values of $L$-functions.
