Poisson approximation of the largest gaps between zeros of a stationary Gaussian process

We study the largest gaps between successive zeros of a smooth stationary Gaussian process. Our main result is that, if correlations decay at least polynomially, then after suitable rescaling of the locations and sizes of the largest gaps in a growing interval, the resulting joint process converges to a Poisson point process. The main novel step in the proof is to establish an approximate splitting property, with multiplicative error, for gap events in well-separated intervals; notably we achieve this for processes with arbitrarily slow polynomial decay of correlations.

Persistence and entropic repulsion of stationary Gaussian fields with spectral singularity at the origin

We compute the exact log-asymptotics of the persistence probability, and determine the entropic repulsion profile conditioned on persistence, for general $d$-dimensional stationary Gaussian fields with spectral singularity at the origin of order $\alpha \in [0,d)$. Under mild regularity conditions these are shown to be universal, depending only on $\alpha$ and $d$, and to have explicit formulations in terms of the capacity and equilibrium potential of the $\alpha$-Riesz kernel. This generalises a result of Bolthausen, Deuschel and Zeitouni on the Gaussian free field to a wide class of Gaussian fields with spectral singularity.

The maximum of a strongly correlated Gaussian process

We revisit a result of Mittal--Ylvisaker that states that the rescaled maximum of a stationary sequence of Gaussian random variables has a Gaussian limit if correlations decay sufficiently slowly. Taking a new approach we relax the conditions for the Gaussian limit and give an extension to smooth non-stationary random fields.

Sign-balance of random Laplace eigenfunctions

Motivated by the problem of the small-scale sign distribution of Laplace eigenfunctions, we introduce a strong notion of sign-balance for (eigen)functions, and prove that random eigenfunctions are sign-balanced above a precisely determined scale with almost full probability. The scale is proven to be optimal up to a logarithmic power of the energy. Our results include the important case of random spherical harmonics, as well as more general band-limited random waves on smooth Riemannian manifolds. Extending the notion of balance to arbitrary levels, we determine the precise optimum scale above which random eigenfunctions are volume-balanced with respect to non-zero levels. Beyond their intrinsic interest, our results serve as a model for a natural conjecture on the optimal scale at which deterministic Laplace eigenfunctions are sign-balanced.

Limit theorems for the number of sign and level-set clusters of the Gaussian free field

We study the limiting fluctuations of the number of sign and level-set clusters of the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 3$, that are contained in a large domain. In dimension $d \ge 4$ we prove that the fluctuations are Gaussian at all non-critical levels, while in dimension $d=3$ we show that fluctuations may be Gaussian or non-Gaussian depending on the level. We also show that the sign clusters experience a form of Berry cancellation in all dimensions, that is, the fluctuations of the sign cluster count is suppressed compared to generic levels. Our proof is based on controlling the Weiner-It\^{o} chaos expansion of the cluster count using percolation theoretic inputs; to our knowledge this is the first time that chaos expansion techniques have been applied to analyse a non-local functional of a strongly correlated Gaussian field.

The giant component of excursion sets of spherical Gaussian ensembles: existence, uniqueness, and volume concentration

We establish the existence and uniqueness of a well-concentrated giant component in the supercritical excursion sets of three important ensembles of spherical Gaussian random fields: Kostlan's ensemble, band-limited ensembles, and the random spherical harmonics. Our main results prescribe quantitative bounds for the volume fluctuations of the giant that are essentially optimal for non-monochromatic ensembles, and suboptimal but still strong for monochromatic ensembles. Our results support the emerging picture that giant components in Gaussian random field excursion sets have similar large-scale statistical properties to giant components in supercritical Bernoulli percolation. The proofs employ novel decoupling inequalities for spherical ensembles which are of independent interest.

A covariance formula for the number of excursion set components of Gaussian fields and applications

We derive a covariance formula for the number of excursion or level set components of a smooth stationary Gaussian field on $\mathbb{R}^d$ contained in compact domains. We also present two applications of this formula: (1) for fields whose correlations are integrable we prove that the variance of the component count in large domains is of volume order and give an expression for the leading constant, and (2) for fields with slower decay of correlation we give an upper bound on the variance which is of optimal order if correlations are regularly varying, and improves on best-known bounds if correlations are oscillating (e.g.\ monochromatic random waves).

A sprinkled decoupling inequality for Gaussian processes and applications

We establish a sprinkled decoupling inequality for increasing events of Gaussian vectors with an error that depends only on the maximum pairwise correlation. As an application we prove the non-triviality of the percolation phase transition for Gaussian fields on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ with (i) uniformly bounded local suprema, and (ii) correlations which decay at least polylogarithmically in the distance with exponent $\gamma > 3$; this expands the scope of existing results on non-triviality of the phase transition, covering new examples such as non-stationary fields and monochromatic random waves.

Percolation of strongly correlated Gaussian fields II. Sharpness of the phase transition

We establish the sharpness of the phase transition for a wide class of Gaussian percolation models, on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d \ge 2$, with correlations decaying at least algebraically with exponent $\alpha > 0$, including the discrete Gaussian free field ($d \ge 3, \alpha = d-2$), the discrete Gaussian membrane model ($d \ge 5, \alpha = d - 4$), and many other examples both discrete and continuous. In particular we do not assume positive correlations. This result is new for all strongly correlated models (i.e. $\alpha \in (0,d]$) in dimension $d \ge 3$ except the Gaussian free field, for which sharpness was proven in a recent breakthrough by Duminil-Copin, Goswami, Rodriguez and Severo; even then, our proof is simpler and yields new near-critical information on the percolation density. For planar fields which are continuous and positively-correlated, we establish sharper bounds on the percolation density by exploiting a new `weak mixing' property for strongly correlated Gaussian fields. As a byproduct we establish the box-crossing property for the nodal set, of independent interest. This is the second in a series of two papers studying level-set percolation of strongly correlated Gaussian fields, which can be read independently.

Percolation of strongly correlated Gaussian fields I. Decay of subcritical connection probabilities

We study the decay of connectivity of the subcritical excursion sets of a class of strongly correlated Gaussian fields. Our main result shows that, for smooth isotropic Gaussian fields whose covariance kernel $K(x)$ is regularly varying at infinity with index $\alpha \in [0, 1)$, the probability that $\{f \le \ell\}$, $\ell < \ell_c$, connects the origin to distance $R$ decays sub-exponentially in $R$ at log-asymptotic rate $c_\alpha (\ell_c-\ell)^2 / K(R)$ for an explicit $c_\alpha > 0$. If $\alpha = 1$ and $\int_0^\infty K(x) dx = \infty$ then the log-asymptotic rate is $c_1 (\ell_c-\ell)^2 R (\int_0^R K(x) dx)^{-1}$, and if $\alpha > 1$ the decay is exponential. Our findings extend recent results on the Gaussian free field (GFF) on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 3$, and can be interpreted as showing that the subcritical behaviour of the GFF is universal among fields with covariance $K(x) \sim c|x|^{d-2}$. Our result is also evidence in support of physicists' predictions that the correlation length exponent is $\nu = 2/\alpha$ if $\alpha \le 1$, and in $d=2$ we establish rigorously that $\nu \ge 2/\alpha$. More generally, our approach opens the door to the large deviation analysis of a wide variety of percolation events for smooth Gaussian fields. This is the first in a series of two papers studying subcritical level-set percolation of strongly correlated Gaussian fields, which can be read independently.

A central limit theorem for the number of excursion set components of Gaussian fields

For a smooth stationary Gaussian field on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and level $\ell \in \mathbb{R}$, we consider the number of connected components of the excursion set $\{f \ge \ell\}$ (or level set $\{f = \ell\}$) contained in large domains. The mean of this quantity is known to scale like the volume of the domain under general assumptions on the field. We prove that, assuming sufficient decay of correlations (e.g. the Bargmann-Fock field), a central limit theorem holds with volume-order scaling. Previously such a result had only been established for `additive' geometric functionals of the excursion/level sets (e.g. the volume or Euler characteristic) using Hermite expansions. Our approach, based on a martingale analysis, is more robust and can be generalised to a wider class of topological functionals. A major ingredient in the proof is a third moment bound on critical points, which is of independent interest.

Sharp phase transition for Cox percolation

We prove the sharpness of the percolation phase transition for a class of Cox percolation models, i.e., models of continuum percolation in a random environment. The key requirements are that the environment has a finite range of dependence and satisfies a local boundedness condition, however the FKG inequality need not hold. The proof combines the OSSS inequality with a coarse-graining construction.

Mean-field bounds for Poisson-Boolean percolation

We establish the mean-field bounds $\gamma \ge 1$, $\delta \ge 2$ and $\triangle \ge 2$ on the critical exponents of the Poisson-Boolean continuum percolation model under a moment condition on the radii; these were previously known only in the special case of fixed radii (in the case of $\gamma$), or not at all (in the case of $\delta$ and $\triangle$). We deduce these as consequences of the mean-field bound $\beta \le 1$, recently established by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion under the same moment condition, using a relative entropy method introduced by the authors in previous work.

Boundedness of the nodal domains of additive Gaussian fields

We study the connectivity of the excursion sets of additive Gaussian fields, i.e.\ stationary centred Gaussian fields whose covariance function decomposes into a sum of terms that depend separately on the coordinates. Our main result is that, under mild smoothness and correlation decay assumptions, the excursion sets $\{f \le \ell\}$ of additive planar Gaussian fields are bounded almost surely at the critical level $\ell_c = 0$. Since we do not assume positive correlations, this provides the first examples of continuous non-positively-correlated stationary planar Gaussian fields for which the boundedness of the nodal domains has been confirmed. By contrast, in dimension $d \ge 3$ the excursion sets have unbounded components at all levels.

Asymptotics for the critical level and a strong invariance principle for high intensity shot noise fields

We study fine properties of the convergence of a high intensity shot noise field towards the Gaussian field with the same covariance structure. In particular we (i) establish a strong invariance principle, i.e. a quantitative coupling between a high intensity shot noise field and the Gaussian limit such that they are uniformly close on large domains with high probability, and (ii) use this to derive an asymptotic expansion for the critical level above which the excursion sets of the shot noise field percolate.

Upper bounds on the one-arm exponent for dependent percolation models

We prove upper bounds on the one-arm exponent $\eta_1$ for a class of dependent percolation models which generalise Bernoulli percolation; while our main interest is level set percolation of Gaussian fields, the arguments apply to other models in the Bernoulli percolation universality class, including Poisson-Voronoi and Poisson-Boolean percolation. More precisely, in dimension $d=2$ we prove that $\eta_1 \le 1/3$ for continuous Gaussian fields with rapid correlation decay (e.g. the Bargmann-Fock field), and in $d \ge 3$ we prove $\eta_1 \le d/3$ for finite-range fields, both discrete and continuous, and $\eta_1 \le d-2$ for fields with rapid correlation decay. Although these results are classical for Bernoulli percolation (indeed they are best-known in general), existing proofs do not extend to dependent percolation models, and we develop a new approach based on exploration and relative entropy arguments. The proof also makes use of a new Russo-type inequality for Gaussian fields, which we apply to prove the sharpness of the phase transition and the mean-field bound for finite-range fields.

The phase transition for planar Gaussian percolation models without FKG

We develop techniques to study the phase transition for planar Gaussian percolation models that are not (necessarily) positively correlated. These models lack the property of positive associations (also known as the `FKG inequality'), and hence many classical arguments in percolation theory do not apply. More precisely, we consider a smooth stationary centred planar Gaussian field $f$ and, given a level $\ell \in \mathbb{R}$, we study the connectivity properties of the excursion set $\{f \geq -\ell\}$. We prove the existence of a phase transition at the critical level $\ell_{crit}=0$ under only symmetry and (very mild) correlation decay assumptions, which are satisfied by the random plane wave for instance. As a consequence, all non-zero level lines are bounded almost surely, although our result does not settle the boundedness of zero level lines (`no percolation at criticality'). To show our main result: (i) we prove a general sharp threshold criterion, inspired by works of Chatterjee, that states that `sharp thresholds are equivalent to the delocalisation of the threshold location'; (ii) we prove threshold delocalisation for crossing events at large scales -- at this step we obtain a sharp threshold result but without being able to locate the threshold -- and (iii) to identify the threshold, we adapt Tassion's RSW theory replacing the FKG inequality by a sprinkling procedure. Although some arguments are specific to the Gaussian setting, many steps are very general and we hope that our techniques may be adapted to analyse other models without FKG.

Percolation of the excursion sets of planar symmetric shot noise fields

We prove the existence of phase transitions in the global connectivity of the excursion sets of planar symmetric shot noise fields. Our main result establishes a phase transition with respect to the level for shot noise fields with symmetric log-concave mark distributions, including Gaussian, uniform, and Laplace marks, and kernels that are positive, symmetric, and have sufficient tail decay. Without the log-concavity assumption we prove a phase transition with respect to the intensity of positive marks.
