Molecular Clouds Resolved at the Onset of Cosmic Noon

We present the discovery of seven molecular clouds in the radio galaxy B2 0902+34 at redshift z=3.4. These clouds are detected as CO(0-1) absorption features against the bright radio continuum, and spectrally resolved using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). The velocity dispersion of the individual absorption components ranges from 3-7 km/s, which is similar to values observed for molecular clouds in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, and imply cloud radii of R~10$^{1-2}$ pc. The absorbing clouds are found in a region of high obscuration inside a 30 kpc wide stellar nebula, as revealed by rest-frame near-ultraviolet imaging performed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The fact that we spectrally resolve molecular clouds at the onset of Cosmic Noon opens prospects for studying cloud chemistry and physics that drive the formation of stars in the Early Universe.

On the planar algebra of Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusion

In recent joint work with V. Jones and D. Shlyakhtenko, we have given a diagrammatic description of Popa's symmetric enveloping inclusion for planar algebra subfactors. In this paper we give a diagrammatic construction of the associated Jones tower, in the case that the planar algebra is finite-depth. We then use this construction to describe the planar algebra of the symmetric enveloping inclusion, which is known to be isomorphic to the planar algebra of Ocneanu's asymptotic inclusion by a result of Popa. As an application we give a planar algebraic computation of the (reduced) fusion algebra of the asymptotic inclusion, recovering some well-known results of Ocneanu and Evans-Kawahigashi.

A maximality result for orthogonal quantum groups

We prove that the quantum group inclusion $O_n \subset O_n^*$ is "maximal", where $O_n$ is the usual orthogonal group and $O_n^*$ is the half-liberated orthogonal quantum group, in the sense that there is no intermediate compact quantum group $O_n\subset G\subset O_n^*$. In order to prove this result, we use: (1) the isomorphism of projective versions $PO_n^*\simeq PU_n$, (2) some maximality results for classical groups, obtained by using Lie algebras and some matrix tricks, and (3) a short five lemma for cosemisimple Hopf algebras.

On the symmetric enveloping algebra of planar algebra subfactors

We give a diagrammatic description of Popa's symmetric enveloping algebras associated to planar algebra subfactors. As an application we construct a natural family of derivations on these factors, and compute a certain free entropy dimension type quantity.

Quantum invariant families of matrices in free probability

We consider (self-adjoint) families of infinite matrices of noncommutative random variables such that the joint distribution of their entries is invariant under conjugation by a free quantum group. For the free orthogonal and hyperoctahedral groups, we obtain complete characterizations of the invariant families in terms of an operator-valued $R$-cyclicity condition. This is a surprising contrast with the Aldous-Hoover characterization of jointly exchangeable arrays.

Decomposition results for Gram matrix determinants

We study the Gram matrix determinants for the groups $S_n,O_n,B_n,H_n$, for their free versions $S_n^+,O_n^+,B_n^+,H_n^+$, and for the half-liberated versions $O_n^*,H_n^*$. We first collect all the known computations of such determinants, along with complete and simplified proofs, and with generalizations where needed. We conjecture that all these determinants decompose as $D=\prod_\pi\phi(\pi)$, with product over all associated partitions.

A characterization of freeness by invariance under quantum spreading

We construct spaces of quantum increasing sequences, which give quantum families of maps in the sense of Soltan. We then introduce a notion of quantum spreadability for a sequence of noncommutative random variables, by requiring their joint distribution to be invariant under taking quantum subsequences. Our main result is a free analogue of a theorem of Ryll-Nardzewski: for an infinite sequence of noncommutative random variables, quantum spreadability is equivalent to free independence and identical distribution with respect to a conditional expectation.

Quantum automorphisms of twisted group algebras and free hypergeometric laws

We prove that we have an isomorphism of type $A_{aut}(\mathbb C_\sigma[G])\simeq A_{aut}(\mathbb C[G])^\sigma$, for any finite group $G$, and any 2-cocycle $\sigma$ on $G$. In the particular case $G=\mathbb Z_n^2$, this leads to a Haar-measure preserving identification between the subalgebra of $A_o(n)$ generated by the variables $u_{ij}^2$, and the subalgebra of $A_s(n^2)$ generated by the variables $X_{ij}=\sum_{a,b=1}^np_{ia,jb}$. Since $u_{ij}$ is "free hyperspherical" and $X_{ij}$ is "free hypergeometric", we obtain in this way a new free probability formula, which at $n=\infty$ corresponds to the well-known relation between the semicircle law, and the free Poisson law.

Asymptotic infinitesimal freeness with amalgamation for Haar quantum unitary random matrices

We consider the limiting distribution of $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ (and more general expressions), where $A_N$ and $B_N$ are $N \times N$ matrices with entries in a unital C$^*$-algebra $\mathcal B$ which have limiting $\mathcal B$-valued distributions as $N \to \infty$, and $U_N$ is a $N \times N$ Haar distributed quantum unitary random matrix with entries independent from $\mathcal B$. Under a boundedness assumption, we show that $U_NA_NU_N^*$ and $B_N$ are asymptotically free with amalgamation over $\mathcal B$. Moreover, this also holds in the stronger infinitesimal sense of Belinschi-Shlyakhtenko. We provide an example which demonstrates that this example may fail for classical Haar unitary random matrices when the algebra $\mathcal B$ is infinite-dimensional.

Stochastic aspects of easy quantum groups

We consider several orthogonal quantum groups satisfying the easiness assumption axiomatized in our previous paper. For each of them we discuss the computation of the asymptotic law of Tr(u^k) with respect to the Haar measure, u being the fundamental representation. For the classical groups O_n, S_n we recover in this way some well-known results of Diaconis and Shahshahani.

De Finetti theorems for easy quantum groups

We study sequences of noncommutative random variables which are invariant under "quantum transformations" coming from an orthogonal quantum group satisfying the "easiness" condition axiomatized in our previous paper. For 10 easy quantum groups, we obtain de Finetti type theorems characterizing the joint distribution of any infinite quantum invariant sequence. In particular, we give a new and unified proof of the classical results of de Finetti and Freedman for the easy groups S_n, O_n, which is based on the combinatorial theory of cumulants. We also recover the free de Finetti theorem of K\"ostler and Speicher, and the characterization of operator-valued free semicircular families due to Curran. We consider also finite sequences, and prove an approximation result in the spirit of Diaconis and Freedman.

Quantum Rotatability

In arXiv:0807.0677, Köstler and Speicher observed that de Finetti's theorem on exchangeable sequences has a free analogue if one replaces exchangeability by the stronger condition of invariance under quantum permutations. In this paper we study sequences of noncommutative random variables whose joint distribution is invariant under quantum orthogonal transformations. We prove a free analogue of Freedman's characterization of conditionally independent Gaussian families, namely an infinite sequence of self-adjoint random variables is quantum orthogonally invariant if and only if they form an operator-valued free centered semicircular family with common variance. Similarly, we show that an infinite sequence of noncommutative random variables is quantum unitarily invariant if and only if they form an operator-valued free centered circular family with common variance. We provide an example to show that, as in the classical case, these results fail for finite sequences. We then give an approximation to how far the distribution of a finite quantum orthogonally invariant sequence is from that of an operator-valued free centered semicircular family with common variance.

Quantum Exchangeable Sequences of Algebras

We extend the notion of quantum exchangeability, introduced by Köstler and Speicher in arXiv:0807.0677, to sequences (ρ_1,ρ_2,...c) of homomorphisms from an algebra C into a noncommutative probability space (A,ϕ), and prove a free de Finetti theorem: an infinite quantum exchangeable sequence (ρ_1,ρ_2,...c) is freely independent and identically distributed with respect to a conditional expectation. As a corollary we obtain a free analogue of the Hewitt Savage zero-one law. As in the classical case, the theorem fails for finite sequences. We give a characterization of finite quantum exchangeable sequences, which can be viewed as a noncommutative analogue of sampling without replacement. We then give an approximation to how far a finite quantum exchangeable sequence is from being freely independent with amalgamation.
