Generalized Kuga-Satake theory and rigid local systems, II: rigid Hecke eigensheaves

This paper uses rigid Hecke eigensheaves, building on Yun's work on the construction of motives with exceptional Galois groups, to produce the first robust examples of `generalized Kuga-Satake theory' outside the Tannakian category of motives generated by abelian varieties. To strengthen our description of the `motivic' nature of Kuga-Satake lifts, we digress to establish a result that should be of independent interest: for any quasi-projective variety over a (finitely-generated) characteristic zero field, the associated weight-graded of its intersection cohomology arises from a motivated motive in the sense of André, and in particular from a classical homological motive if one assumes the Standard Conjectures. This extends work of de Cataldo and Migliorini.

Variations on a theorem of Tate

Let $F$ be a number field. These notes explore Galois-theoretic, automorphic, and motivic analogues and refinements of Tate's basic result that continuous projective representations $Gal(\bar{F}/F) \to PGL_n(C)$ lift to $GL_n(C)$. We take special interest in the interaction of this result with algebraicity (on the automorphic side) and geometricity (in the sense of Fontaine-Mazur). On the motivic side, we study refinements and generalizations of the classical Kuga-Satake construction. Some auxiliary results touch on: possible infinity-types of algebraic automorphic representations; comparison of the automorphic and Galois "Tannakian formalisms"; monodromy (independence-of-$\ell$) questions for abstract Galois representations.

Mumford-Tate groups of polarizable Hodge structures

We classify the possible Mumford-Tate groups of polarizable rational Hodge structures. Along the way we deduce a polarized Hodge-theoretic analogue of a conjectural property of motivic Galois groups suggested by Serre.

On the sign of regular algebraic polarizable automorphic representations

We remove a parity condition from the construction of automorphic Galois representations carried out in the Paris Book Project. We subsequently generalize this construction to the case of `mixed-parity' (but still regular essentially self-dual) automorphic representations over totally real fields, finding associated geometric projective representations. Finally, we optimize some of the Galois lifting results of arxiv:1207.6724 and apply them to the previous mixed-parity setting.

Generalized Kuga-Satake theory and rigid local systems, I: the middle convolution

This note explains an approach to producing examples of 'generalized Kuga-Satake theory' based on establishing special cases of Simpson's conjecture that rigid local systems are motivic. This strategy is then carried out, using work of Bogner and Reiter, in a low-dimensional example, producing the first non-trivial examples of generalized Kuga-Satake theory outside of the Tannakian category of motives generated by abelian varieties. For a more robust collection of examples, see the sequel "Generalized Kuga-Satake theory and rigid local systems, II: rigid Hecke eigensheaves."

Automorphy and irreducibility of some l-adic representations

In this paper we prove that a pure, regular, totally odd, polarizable weakly compatible system of $l$-adic representations is potentially automorphic. The innovation is that we make no irreducibility assumption, but we make a purity assumption instead. For compatible systems coming from geometry, purity is often easier to check than irreducibility. We use Katz's theory of rigid local systems to construct many examples of motives to which our theorem applies. We also show that if $F$ is a CM or totally real field and if $π$ is a polarizable, regular algebraic, cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_n(\A_F)$, then for a positive Dirichlet density set of rational primes $l$, the $l$-adic representations $r_{l,\imath}(π)$ associated to $π$ are irreducible.
