Polarization Asymmetry Zero in Heavy Quark Photoproduction and Leptoproduction Cross Sections

We demonstrate two novel features of the sea-quark contributions to the polarized structure functions and photoproduction cross sections, a zero sum rule and a zero crossing point of the polarization asymmetry, which can be traced directly to the dynamics of the perturbative tree-graph gluon-splitting contributions. In particular, we show that the Born contribution of massive quarks arising from photon-gluon fusion gives zero contribution to the logarithmic integral over the polarization asymmetry $\int {dν\over ν}Δσ(ν,Q^2)$ for any photon virtuality. The vanishing of this integral in the Bjorken scaling limit then implies a zero gluon-splitting Born contribution to the Gourdin-Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for polarized structure functions from massive sea quarks. The vanishing of the polarization asymmetry at or near the canonical position predicted by perturbative QCD provides an important tool for verifying the dominance of the photon-gluon fusion contribution to charm photoproduction and for validating the effectiveness of this process as a measure of the gluon polarization $ΔG(x,Q^2)$ in the nucleon. The displacement of the asymmetry zero from its canonical position is sensitive to the virtuality of the gluon in the photon-gluon fusion subprocess, and it can provide a measure of intrinsic and higher-order sea quark contributions.

Probing the QCD pomeron in e+ e- collisions

The total cross section for scattering virtual photons at high energy is sensitive to pomeron physics. If the photons are sufficiently virtual, QCD perturbation theory applies, so that the reaction probes the short distance pomeron. We study this reaction for present and future e+/- e- colliders.

Aspects of SU(N_c) Gauge Theories in the Limit of Small Number of Colors

We investigate properties of the color space of $SU(N_c)$ gauge theories in the limit of small number of colors $(N_c \to 0)$ and large number of flavors. More generally, we introduce a rescaling of $α_s$ and $n_f$ which assigns a finite limit to colored quantities as $N_c \to 0$, which reproduces their known large-$N_c$ limit, and which expresses them as an analytic function of $N_c^2$ for arbitrary value of $N_c$. The vanishing-$N_c$ limit has an Abelian character and is also the small-$N_c$ limit of $[U(1)]^{N_c-1}$. This limit does not have an obvious quantum field theory interpretation; however, it provides practical consistency checks on QCD perturbative quantities by comparing them to their QED counterparts. Our analysis also describes the two-dimensional topological structure involved in the interpretation of the small $N_c$-limit in color space.

Pade Approximants, Optimal Renormalization Scales, and Momentum Flow in Feynman Diagrams

We show that the Pade Approximant (PA) approach for resummation of perturbative series in QCD provides a systematic method for approximating the flow of momentum in Feynman diagrams. In the large-$β_0$ limit, diagonal PA's generalize the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale-setting method to higher orders in a renormalization scale- and scheme-invariant manner, using multiple scales that represent Neubert's concept of the distribution of momentum flow through a virtual gluon. If the distribution is non-negative, the PA's have only real roots, and approximate the distribution function by a sum of delta-functions, whose locations and weights are identical to the optimal choice provided by the Gaussian quadrature method for numerical integration. We show how the first few coefficients in a perturbative series can set rigorous bounds on the all-order momentum distribution function, if it is positive. We illustrate the method with the vacuum polarization function and the Bjorken sum rule computed in the large-$β_0$ limit.

QCD Constrains on the Shape of Polarized Quark and Gluon Distributions

We develop simple analytic representations of the polarized quark and gluon distributions in the nucleon at low $Q^2$ which incorporate general constraints obtained from the requirements of color coherence of gluon couplings at $x \sim 0$ and the helicity retention properties of perturbative QCD couplings at $x \sim 1.$ The unpolarized predictions are similar to the $D_0'$ distributions given by Martin, Roberts, and Stirling. The predictions for the quark helicity distributions are compared with polarized structure functions measured by the E142 experiment at SLAC and the SMC experiment at CERN.

The Light-Cone Fock State Expansion and Hadron Physics Phenomenology

The ensemble of light-cone Fock wavefunctions $\{ψ_{n/H}(x_i,\vec k_{\perp i},λ_i)\}$ provides a conceptual basis for representing physical hadrons and nuclei in terms of their fundamental quark and gluon degrees of freedom. A number of applications of the light-cone formalism to QCD phenomenology are briefly reviewed, such as the origin of Regge behavior of polarized structure functions, the high momentum transfer behavior of exclusive reactions, the color transparency properties of diffractive vector meson photoproduction, and the behavior of quark distributions at large $x_{bj}$. The light-cone formalism illuminates novel features of hadron physics, such as the intrinsic gluon and heavy quark distributions, the quark - antiquark asymmetry of the intrinsic heavy quark sea, and the importance of rearrangement mechanisms in heavy quarkonium decay. I also discuss the potential for measuring the shape of the valence light-cone Fock wavefunction of hadrons and photons in nuclear diffractive multi-jet production.

Intrinsic Charm of Vector Mesons: A Possible Solution of the "rho pi" Puzzle

An outstanding mystery of charmonium physics is why the J/ψdecays prominently to pseudoscalar plus vector meson channels, such as J/ψ-> ρπand J/ψ-> K^*K, whereas the ψ'(2S) does not. We show that such decays of J/ψand their suppression for ψ'(2S) follow naturally from the existence of intrinsic charm |qbar q cbar c> Fock components of the light vector mesons.

Rapidity gaps in perturbative QCD

We analyze diffractive deep inelastic scattering within perturbative QCD by studying lepton scattering on a heavy quark target. Simple explicit expressions are derived in impact parameter space for the photon wave function and the scattering cross sections corresponding to single and double Coulomb gluon exchange. At limited momentum transfers to the target, the results agree with the general features of the ``aligned jet model''. The color--singlet exchange cross section receives a leading twist contribution only from the aligned jet region, where the transverse size of the photon wave function remains finite in the Bjorken scaling limit. In contrast to inclusive DIS, in diffractive events there is no leading twist contribution to $σ_L/σ_T$ from the lowest order $(q\bar q)$ photon Fock state, and the cross section for heavy quarks is power suppressed in the quark mass. There are also important contributions with large momentum transfer to the target, which corresponds to events having high transverse momentum production in both the projectile and target rapidity regions, separated by a rapidity gap.

Optimal Renormalization Scales and Commensurate Scale Relations

Commensurate scale relations relate observables to observables and thus are independent of theoretical conventions, such as the choice of intermediate renormalization scheme. The physical quantities are related at commensurate scales which satisfy a transitivity rule which ensures that predictions are independent of the choice of an intermediate renormalization scheme. QCD can thus be tested in a new and precise way by checking that the observables track both in their relative normalization and in their commensurate scale dependence. For example, the radiative corrections to the Bjorken sum rule at a given momentum transfer $Q$ can be predicted from measurements of the e+e- annihilation cross section at a corresponding commensurate energy scale $\sqrt s \propto Q,$ thus generalizing Crewther's relation to non-conformal QCD. The coefficients that appear in this perturbative expansion take the form of a simple geometric series and thus have no renormalon divergent behavior. We also discuss scale-fixed relations between the threshold corrections to the heavy quark production cross section in e+e- annihilation and the heavy quark coupling $α_V$ which is measurable in lattice gauge theory.

Systematics of Heavy Quark Production at HERA

We discuss heavy quark and quarkonium production in various kinematic regions at the HERA ep collider. In contrast to fixed target experiments, collider kinematics allows the possibility of detailed measurements of particle production in the proton fragmentation region. One thus can study parton correlations in the proton Fock states materialized by the virtual photon probe. We discuss various configurations of inelastic electron-proton scattering, including peripheral, diffractive, and deep inelastic processes. In particular, we show that intrinsic heavy quark Fock states can be identified by the observation of quarkonium production at large $x_F$ and a low mean transverse momentum which is insensitive to the virtuality $Q^2$ of the photon.

Precision Tests of Quantum Chromodynamics and the Standard Model

We discuss three topics relevant to testing the Standard Model to high precision: commensurate scale relations, which relate observables to each other in pertubation theory without renormalization scale or scheme ambiguity, the relationship of compositeness to anomalous moments, and new methods for measuring the anomalous magnetic and quadrupole moments of the W and Z.

W ANOMALOUS MOMENTS AND THE POLARIZATION ASYMMETRY ZERO IN gamma e --> W nu

We show from general principles that there must be a center of mass energy, $\sqrt s_0$, where the polarization asymmetry $A=Δσ({γe \to W ν})/ σ({γe \to W ν})$ for circularly-polarized photon and electron beams vanishes. In the case of the Standard Model, the crossing point where the asymmetry changes sign occurs in Born approximation at $\sqrt s_{γe} = 3.1583\ldots M_W \simeq 254$ GeV. We demonstrate the sensitivity of the position of the polarization asymmetry zero to modifications of the SM trilinear $γW W$ coupling. Given reasonable assumptions for the luminosity and energy range for the Next Linear Collider(NLC) with a backscattered laser beam, we show that the zero point, $\sqrt s_0$, of the polarization asymmetry may be determined with sufficient precision to constrain the anomalous couplings of the $W$ to better than the 1\% level at $95\%$ CL. In addition to the fact that only a limited range of energy is required, the polarization asymmetry measurements have the important advantage that many of the systematic errors cancel in taking cross section ratios. The position of the zero thus provides an additional weapon in the arsenal used to probe anomalous trilinear gauge couplings.

RELATIVISTIC CORRECTIONS TO THE ELECTROMAGNETIC AND AXIAL MOMENTS OF NUCLEI AND OTHER COMPOSITE SYSTEMS

We calculate the electromagnetic and axial nuclear moments of the deuteron and triton as a function of their radius using a relativistic two-nucleon and three-nucleon model formulated on the light-cone. The results also provide an estimate of the nuclear binding corrections to helicity-dependent deep inelastic scattering sum rules. At large nucleon radius, the moments are given by the usual non-relativistic formulae modified by finite binding effects. At small radius, the moments take the canonical values given by the generalization of the Drell-Hearn-Gerasimov sum rule. In addition, as R-->0, the constituent helicities become completely disoriented, and the Gamow-Teller matrix element vanishes. Thus, in the pointlike limit MR-->0, the moments of a spin-one bound states coincide with the canonical couplings of elementary spin-one bosons of the Standard Model, mu=e/M, Q=-e/M^2, and g_A=0.

BEYOND STANDARD QUANTUM CHROMODYNAMICS

Despite the many empirical successes of QCD, there are a number of intriguing experimental anomalies that have been observed in heavy flavor hadroproduction, in measurements of azimuthal correlations in deep inelastic processes, and in measurements of spin correlations in hadronic reactions. Such phenomena point to color coherence and multiparton correlations in the hadron wavefunctions and physics beyond standard leading twist factorization. Two new high precision tests of QCD and the Standard Model are discussed: classical polarized photoabsorption sum rules, which are sensitive to anomalous couplings and composite structure, and commensurate scale relations, which relate physical observables to each other without scale or scheme ambiguity. The relationship of anomalous couplings to composite structure is also discussed.

CLASSICAL PHOTOABSORPTION SUM RULES

We use a quantum loop expansion to derive sum rule constraints on polarized photoabsorption cross sections in the Standard Model, generalizing earlier results obtained by Altarelli, Cabibbo, and Maiani. We show that the logarithmic integral of the spin-dependent photoabsorption cross section $\int^\infty_{ν_{th}} {dν\over ν} Δσ_{\rm Born}(ν) $ vanishes for any $2 \to 2$ Standard Model or supersymmetric process $γa \to b c$ in the classical, tree-graph approximation. Here $ν= {p \cdot q}/M$ and $Δσ(ν) = σ_P(ν)- σ_A(ν)$ is the difference between the photoabsorption cross section for parallel and antiparallel photon and target helicities. Tests of the sum rule for the reactions $γe \to W ν$ and $γγ\to W^+ W^-$ can provide new tests of the canonical magnetic and quadrupole couplings of the Standard Model. We also extend the sum rule to certain virtual photon processes.

The Impact of QCD and Light-Cone Quantum Mechanics on Nuclear Physics

We discuss a number of novel applications of Quantum Chromodynamics to nuclear structure and dynamics, such as the reduced amplitude formalism for exclusive nuclear amplitudes. We particularly emphasize the importance of light-cone Hamiltonian and Fock State methods as a tool for describing the wavefunctions of composite relativistic many-body systems and their interactions. We also show that the use of covariant kinematics leads to nontrivial corrections to the standard formulae for the axial, magnetic, and quadrupole moments of nucleons and nuclei.

Commensurate Scale Relations: Precise Tests of Quantum Chromodynamics without Scale or Scheme Ambiguity

We derive commensurate scale relations which relate perturbatively calculable QCD observables to each other, including the annihilation ratio, the heavy quark potential, tau decay, and radiative corrections to structure function sum rules. The ratio of scales $Q_A/Q_B$ is unique at leading order and guarantees that the observables A and B pass through new quark thresholds at the same physical scale. In higher orders a different renormalization scale $Q^{n*}$ is assigned for each order n in the perturbative series such that the coefficients of the series are identical to that of a conformally invariant theory. QCD can thus be tested in a new and precise way by checking that the effective charges of observables track both in their relative normalization and in their commensurate scale dependence. The commensurate scale relations which relate the radiative corrections to the annihilation ratio to the radiative corrections for the Bjorken and Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rules provides the generalization of the Crewther relation to non-conformal gauge theory.

Exclusive Processes: Tests of Coherent QCD Phenomena and Nucleon Substructure at CEBAF -

Measurements of exclusive processes such as electroproduction, photoproduction, and Compton scattering are among the most sensitive probes of proton structure and coherent phenomena in quantum chromodynamics. The continuous electron beam at CEBAF, upgraded in laboratory energy to 10--12 GeV, will allow a systematic study of exclusive, semi-inclusive, and inclusive reactions in a kinematic range well-tuned to the study of fundamental nucleon and nuclear substructure. I also discuss the potential at CEBAF for studying novel QCD phenomena at the charm production threshold, including the possible production of nuclear-bound quarkonium.
